Marty,

Read your page today...finally someone except me is mentioning that it's more disturbing to cut a hole in a flag and wear it as a poncho, than seeing a little breast.

What happened to all the bandwagon patriots? They didn't mind the star of trailer parks - Kid Rock - doing that to the American flag, but they're upset that something natural was shown on TV?

They're tripping over themselves calling for investigations, apologies...but burning a woman's face with fire in a commercial is OK? And having little kids utter 'Holy Shit' isn't really a big deal?

Geez....welcome to New England of the 1800's...while we're at it, let's burn Janet just in case....

~ Alex

Thanks, Alex!

From Asscroft's drapes to Janet Jackson, the boys of the current administration are frightenly repressed - hate women, nuturing, peace & life, but enjoy death, destruction, shock, & awe.

The NFL and CBS/MTV/Viacom/Infinity are 'angry' & want apologies, while the hate-mongers of right-wing (i.e. Clear Channel) talk radio want blood - a crapper-load of losers who either have to pay to see a tit or own an inflatable doll. Or maybe gamble on a dominatrix...

As for the married ones, their very pious wives are most likely praying to become widows.

Tonight's 'news' had the story that Mikey Powell (R-Nepotism) was also going to persecute Nelly & Kid Rock - they were 'inappropriate', too.

Bottom line is a bunch of bullies (who all profit from the situation) have decided to blame Janet - wonder what they think her scarlet letter should be?

BTW, saw that 'Cialis' commercial again tonight - this time the kid caught the '4-hour erection' disclaimer. Yeah, much more appropriate....

KoKo?

I was wondering if your site would mind replacing the term "President Bush" with KoKo. It seems fair since he was not elected and lies so often and without accountability about so many things.

Michael B

Hi Michael -

I go to great lengths to refer to that man residing in the White House as 'Resident' Bush.

Besides, KoKo is a damn smart primate. She can finger spell & form entire sentences, unlike the great deserter.

In a more just world, we'd see KoKo in the White House & that resident in KoKo's cage.

I am, however, open to suggestions of a 'bad' animal whose name would be more appropriate.

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Started out sunny & cold, clouded over - no rain, yet, and brisk.

Had a ham taking up too much space in the freezer, so invited some pals & fired up the oven.

Fred car-pooled down & we compared tales of how shitty grocery shopping is with the lock-out/strike. Out in the Valley, he's going broke shopping at Gelson's, while I wish we had a Gelson's. Regardless, we've both experienced shortages of basic staples.

Over 4 months in & the grocery workers are whipped. Ahnold ran on a big-business ticket (but few seemed to notice) - even though he belongs to several unions, he took big $ from Vons/Safeway (among many). I'm sure he's interested in a fair & balanced resolution...

Watched 'Frasier' - guess that was their 'acid episode'.

Ex-Dean Manager Lands Job at MSGOP

Joe Trippi

It probably won't prompt his former boss to raise his fist and shout "Yeahhh!" but Howard Dean's ex-campaign manager, Joe Trippi, made is debut on Tuesday as a political analyst on MSNBC.

A week after quitting Dean's campaign following the former governor's losses in Iowa and New Hampshire -- and fallout from his widely mocked concession speech -- Trippi joined MSNBC's election team for coverage of Tuesday's seven-state round of primaries and caucuses.

Trippi, the Internet guru who helped propel Dean from an obscure former governor of Vermont to the top of the Democratic field, left Dean last week rather than take another campaign post as Dean reshuffled his organization in a bid to regain momentum after stinging defeats in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Janet Jackson Should Have Bared Both Breasts

Sharon Osbourne

The FCC, MTV, CBS and the NFL are all angry about Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's risque Super Bowl halftime show.

Sharon Osbourne is angry too - because she wanted to see more. "I was very disappointed by it and all I can say is, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, I love you both and much respect to you, but own it! You did it, own it," she said during her syndicated Sharon Osbourne Show, airing Wednesday.

"And next time," the talk-show host added, "take both (breasts) out! Not just one - both! Come on! ... CBS says they 'regret the incident' and NFL says they're 'extremely disappointed.' Well I was disappointed in just seeing one."

Commemorates Landmark Court Ruling

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby got serious with 500 ninth-graders at a talk Monday commemorating the Supreme Court's landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling.

"Take that education," Cosby told the teens. "Don't tell me it's boring. You're going to be boring in about 10 years, and you may be boring while you're sitting in a cell, because you decided to do something that breaks the law. Why? Because you couldn't get a job. Why? Because you didn't want to give yourself a chance. Why? Because you don't like yourself."

The talk was one of hundreds of events around the country celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1954 desegregation ruling, which is the official theme for February's Black History Month.

Not Keen on Space Travel

Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation," said in an interview published Tuesday that he thinks interplanetary travel for humans is a bad idea.

"I'm a bit of a wet blanket when it comes to the whole business of space travel," Stewart was quoted as saying on the British Broadcasting Corp.'s Web site.

"I would like to see us get this place right first before we have the arrogance to put significantly flawed civilizations out onto other planets — even though they may be utterly uninhabited," he said.

Stewart, 63, said he approved of unmanned missions such as NASA's use of twin rovers to explore the surface of Mars. But he objected to sending astronauts, saying the trips were too expensive.

Man With An Opinion

Spike Lee

Spike Lee says he's seen progress in the way blacks are portrayed in film since his 1986 feature debut, "She's Gotta Have It," but there's plenty of work to be done.

"Black film is still in a ghetto," the director told a crowd of about 1,700 students at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. "There are broad comedies and hip-hop drug things and broad comedies. It's difficult as a director or actor to go outside of that."

He targeted "Barbershop," which contained jokes about the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, and "The Legend of Bagger Vance" and "The Green Mile," which featured characters Lee called "super-duper magical mystical Negroes."

"They had magic powers that couldn't change their situations, but could only help the white stars of the movie," he said. "What's the point?"

Sci Fi Picks Up Option

'Battlestar Galactica'

After successfully relaunching 'Battlestar Galactica' as a miniseries in December, Sci Fi Channel picked up the options last week on its top cast members, which include Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and Katee Sackhoff. Sources said the cable network is aiming to run "Galactica" as a full-fledged series as early as fourth-quarter 2004.

Sci Fi declined comment, but all indications are that at least six episodes of "Galactica" will be shot in Vancouver as soon as April. It will likely be one of cable's more expensive drama series, with production estimates as high as $1.5 million per episode.

The four-hour "Galactica" miniseries averaged 4.2 million viewers last year, making it the third-highest-rated multinight program Sci Fi has aired.

Blames National Enquirer For Divorce

David Gest

Liza Minnelli's breakup with David Gest was caused by a tabloid article, not alleged physical abuse, the producer said in an interview to be broadcast Friday.

Gest, who has been staying in Hawaii since the split, told "Dateline's" Stone Phillips that Minnelli "beat me and hit me everywhere," but it was a National Enquirer article portraying his estranged wife as an alcoholic that led to the relationship's end.

"She got the magazine on a Wednesday morning and on Thursday announced our marriage was over," Gest said in the NBC interview, according to a news release from the network.

The 50-year-old Gest denies having anything to do with the tabloid report and said he might still be together with the 57-year-old Minnelli had it not been published.

Deep Purple

Deprived of the Rolling Stones last year, China's rock 'n roll fans can seek solace by headbanging to Deep Purple instead.

The veteran rockers, headed by axeman Richie Blackmore, will play four concerts in China starting March 31, taking in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Guangzhou, the promotor said Tuesday.

Founded in 1968, the band, best known for "Smoke on the Water", was once one of the biggest in the world.

Sculptor Maggi Hambling said the 12-foot (3.7-meter) steel scallop shell on Aldeburgh's windswept beach is a fitting tribute to the composer of the operas 'Peter Grimes' and 'Billy Budd,' who lived in the town and loved its rugged North Sea coast. But some residents of Aldeburgh have petitioned local officals claiming that the sculpture spoils the views alongthe beach.

On Display In Tokyo

Adolf Hitler Watercolour

A watercolour by Adolf Hitler goes on display this week at a Tokyo theatre to promote a movie based loosely on the Nazi dictator's life, the film's Japanese distributor said Tuesday.

The undated, unnamed work will go on exhibit Saturday, coinciding with the premiere of Max, which depicts Hitler's transformation from a struggling artist into a promising propagandist of German nationalism, said Toshiba Entertainment Inc. spokesman Daisuke Kobayashi. The film has prompted angry reactions overseas from those offended by a portrayal of Hitler that humanizes one of history's most reviled figures.

The watercolour of Vienna's Karlskirche, also known as Saint Karl's Church, will be on display at the Theatre Times Square in Tokyo's Shibuya ward until Feb. 15, and then returned to Germany for auction in May, Kobayashi said. Another pencil sketch by Hitler may join it, he said.

Blames Christian Brando

Robert Blake

An attorney for accused wife murderer and actor Robert Blake said in court on Tuesday that they could make a "compelling case" that the real killer was Marlon Brando's son, Christian Brando.

Defense attorney Thomas Mesereau, during a pretrial hearing in the case, suggested that Christian Brando -- who has been romantically linked to Bakley -- was enraged when he learned the baby she was carrying was Blake's and not his. The girl, Rose, is now 3 and being cared for by Blake's daughter.

Mesereau was seeking permission from the judge to call as a witness Diane Madsen, who has said she overheard Brando telling an acquaintance named "Duffy" over the phone that someone should put a bullet in Bakley's head. Ronald "Duffy" Hambleton is one of two Hollywood stuntmen who have testified that Blake solicited them to murder his wife.

But Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Darlene Schempp refused to allow Madsen to testify, saying she was not credible as a witness. The judge said Blake's attorneys can ask Hambleton if Brando also solicited him to commit murder.

Women's Beer Ad Kiss Prompts Complaints

Oh, Canada

Forget the furor over Janet Jackson's breast-baring stunt during the Super Bowl telecast - more Canadians were apparently upset by a beer commercial showing two women kissing.

The federal broadcast regulator said Tuesday that it had received three written complaints about Jackson's staged breast pop-out during a dance number, while 10 people wrote to complain about the Labatt beer commercial. "We would refer (the letters) to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council after reviewing them," said Phillipe Tousignant, a spokesman for the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission.

Up for Auction

Rocky Balboa Statue

A fledgling organization in central Pennsylvania with little money but big dreams for a 300-acre sports museum and library is trying to auction one of sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg's three "Rocky" statues.

"We're using 'Rocky' as a fund-raising event and to try and generate publicity for the project," said Harvey Abrams, president of the International Institute for Sport and Olympic History.

Since the organization is incorporated as a nonprofit, Abrams says it will "give away" the statue to the first person to donate $3 million. If the auction on eBay expires Thursday without a bidder, which he acknowledges is likely, Abrams said he will entertain other offers and — attention bargain hunters — he may let "Rocky" go for as low as $1 million.

France Celebrates

'Year of George Sand'

France launched the "Year of George Sand" in honour of the 19th century writer and feminist famous for her many works, avant-garde views and string of celebrated lovers.

Born in Paris in 1804 as Aurore Dupin, she was raised by her grandmother, married a baron and started a family.

But, bored with her lot, she soon left them to start her career writing under her pseudonym for Le Figaro newspaper and magazines before turning to books, which won her the attention of several famous men who soon became her lovers, among them the poet Alfred de Musset and the composer Frederic Chopin.

She spent much of her time travelling and writing, and in both did much to question the role of women in French society and expressed strong socialist ideas. She died in 1876.
