Kerry v. Bush

By Baron Dave Romm

Kerry v. Bush

Send a letter to the Star Tribune

We are not divided into Blue and Red States. The US is divided by an astonishing Reality Gap. Republicans believe things that are not true. Let me repeat one from a previous column and a few more recent items.

Many American still hold misperceptions about Iraq war, poll finds, April 22, Knight Ridder Newspapers.

A new poll shows that 57 percent of Americans continue to believe that Saddam Hussein gave "substantial support" to al-Qaida terrorists before the war with Iraq, despite a lack of evidence of that relationship.

In addition, 45 percent of Americans have the impression that "clear evidence" was found that Iraq worked closely with Osama bin Laden's network, and a majority believe that before the war Iraq either had weapons of mass destruction (38 percent) or a major program for developing them (22 percent).

There's no known evidence to date that these statements are true.

Republicans believe lies.

Prisoner Abuse in Texas, Iraq Bear Similarities (St. Louis Post-Dispatch article archived by East Bay Kerry since it fell off the conservative news media's web sites very quickly)
WASHINGTON - Prisoners stripped naked, beaten about the head, set upon by dogs and kicked by verbally abusive guards.
George W. Bush, informed of the alleged mistreatment, says nothing publicly because the incident is the subject of internal investigation - only to have shocking images, taken by the guards themselves, flash around the world.
The incident took place in Texas nearly a decade ago, in 1996, when Bush was that state's governor. The prisoners abused were Missourians, inmates temporarily transferred to county jail facilities in Texas run by private contractors because of overcrowded prisons back home.

Not only did this not bother W., but it gave him ideas.

Ex-head of TDCJ set up Iraq jail
A civilian charged with preparing Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison for U.S. military use headed the Texas prison system during one of its most controversial periods and later resigned as director of Utah prisons after an inmate died while shackled naked to a chair.
Lane McCotter, now director of business development for a private prison company, Management & Training Corp., says he never trained U.S. military personnel working in Iraq's prisons and turned over the management of Abu Ghraib to military officials before the United States began housing prisoners there.
But Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, is urging Attorney General John Ashcroft to investigate how civilians such as McCotter were chosen to oversee the opening of prisons in Iraq -- noting that McCotter is an executive for a company operating a private prison in New Mexico that the Justice Department criticized last year for unsafe conditions and lack of medical care for inmates.
McCotter returned to the United States in early September after four months of work in Iraq, first evaluating and then preparing the country's prisons for reopening. The first documented abuses in Abu Ghraib prison occurred in October.

Republicans refuse to believe the truth: Bush has no moral compass. He and his oily friends not only knew about Abu Ghraib the previous year, they went out of their way to create the barbaric conditions. And they're such cowards that they refuse to be held responsible for their crimes.

Army Stage-Managed Fall of Hussein Statue (LA Times story archived on Commondreams.org since it fell off the conservative news media's web sites very quickly)
Ultimately, a Marine recovery vehicle toppled the statue with a chain, but the effort appeared to be Iraqi-inspired because the psychological team had managed to pack the vehicle with cheering Iraqi children.
Republicans are quick to believe lies and refuse to believe the truth.

Presented with the astonishing lies spewed by the Bush administration, what do the conservative media elite report? I heard this exact story repeated twice in 24 hours. Once on NPR by a media whore guest and once by Eric Black, a reporter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune

Poll: On troops issue, many don't know their candidate
A large portion of Upper Midwestern voters have a wrong impression of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's position on U.S. troop levels in Iraq, according to a University of Minnesota poll in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.
Most registered voters in the three battleground states want to decrease the number of U.S. troops in Iraq, and most of them believe that Kerry shares that position.
In fact, Kerry and President Bush both say that the United States must maintain the troops necessary to complete the U.S. mission of stabilizing Iraq, and both favor sending more troops if U.S. commanders request them. When the 2004 Election Project of the university's Humphrey Institute polled voters in the three states about what they prefer to see happen with troop levels in Iraq, 28 percent said they favor increased troop levels, 12 percent said they favor maintaining current levels, and 58 percent said they want to decrease the number of U.S. troops.
When those who favor a troop reduction were asked about Bush's and Kerry's stands on the issue, a 76 percent mistakenly believed that Kerry has pledged to decrease troop levels. And 22 percent mistakenly believed that Bush favored troop reductions.

It's the "Every does it" gambit, pretending that a minor example (a poll in three states) of a subset of Kerry supporters ("those who favor troop reduction") is somehow equivalent to the utter disconnect from reality by Bush supporters.

I've met Mr. Black, and have followed his reporting for years. While he's fallen to the Dark Side too often, he at least tries to get his facts straight. His sin, in this case, is a sin of omission. He just printed the RNC handout. (Heck, compare his report to the various freeper postings.) I wrote to him about this, and got an interesting reply. I will paraphrase (and correct his spelling...):

For some general work i'm doing on the electorate, would you be willing to provide a short list on the theme:
Five or so reasons it's important to me that Bush be defeated, and/or, why it's important to me that Kerry be elected.
I emphasize short.

He didn't specify whether "important to me" meant important to Eric Black or important to me the voter. I assumed the latter and wrote back.

Well, if you want 'em short:
Five Reasons Why Bush Should Be Defeated
1) Bush's economic policies have been an unmitigated disaster.
2) Bush's environmental programs have been an unmitigated disaster.
3) Bush's foreign policy has been an unmitigated disaster.
4) Bush has lost the war on terror.
5) After 9/11, Bush had the unique opportunity to prove he was really a uniter, and to show the world that ALL of America was outraged at the attack: He should have appointed Al Gore to head Homeland Security. Gore is an expert on counter-terrorism measures, and his selection would have unified the country instantly. Instead, Bush picked the ineffectual Tom Ridge, and has proceeded to throw away every ounce of sympathy America had abroad and destroyed our military's effectiveness at home. The response to 9/11 proved Bush places politics over the safety of Americans. He is a weak leader, beholden to overseas oil more than any American interest.
Bonus reason:
6) Bush is a lying cowardly weasel with no moral compass.
Five Reasons Why John Kerry Should Be Elected
1) Kerry is a proven leader in the Senate.
2) Kerry is a proven leader in war.
3) Kerry surrounds himself with intelligent and competent advisors.
4) Kerry has the strength of his convictions and the intelligence to turn his convictions into working policies.
5) Kerry is a uniter who will change the tone in Washington. For the better, this time.
Bonus reason:
6) Kerry is a strong liberal just when we need a strong liberal to lead the country out of the moral failing of the Gingrich/Limbaugh/Rove conservative attack on the Constitution.

This was on Friday, and he may not get the e-mail until Monday (today for Bartcop-E readers).

Meet the challenge: Send a letter to Eric Black

This is a worthwhile challenge. It's not enough to defeat Bush. That's a no-brainer (as are most things about Republicans). We need to demonstrate why we support Kerry and the Democrats.

I hope he won't mind (his e-mail address was printed in the paper under the article) and I hope Bartcop readers send Eric Black five (or so) short reasons why Bush should be defeated and five (or so) short reasons why Kerry should be elected. Be polite and stress the positive. Mention where you are writing from (being in the Minneapolis Star Tribune distribution area will help). Feel free to mention my name (he'll probably wonder why he's getting all these messages from California...) and spread this request through blogs and links.

The case against Bush is easy. Now that the Democratic National Convention has begun, it's time to deal with the case for Kerry.

Re: Slim-Fast

Hi Marty,

Love your site! I go there EVERY morning!

But, back to Slim Fast! Would you believe I got the SAME letter back from them? I'm doing a cut 'n paste here.

See below. (Shows you how original THEY are!)

Sorry, I deleted my letter to them (I was SO angry!) but it was similar to Heather's.

Thanks, S!
Form letters rarely surprise me anymore, but I am curious if Slim Fast heard from more consumers before or after their firing of Whoopi?

Re: Slim Fast

Granted, I didn't ask for a response, but Slim Fast didn't respond to this message that I sent on July 16th:

I've bought and used Slim Fast for a number of years. I've recommended it to many of my friends. However, I will not again buy your product, and I will discourage friends from doing so. You have a right to your actions, but I am disappointed that you have terminated your relationship with Whoppi Goldberg because of comments she made--comments NOT made while representing Slim Fast--at a political event. You knew her political views when you contracted with her. Her politics are not the totality of her person. She has a right to express herself, and that does not, in my eyes, affect her endorsement of your product.

I'm very disappointed that you chose to validate the viewpoint of those who support the other political party. Politics have nothing to do with your product, but you've chosen to make it so. What a shame.

I hope you gain as much business from the political aisle you've chosen to side with as the business you'll lose from those with differing political opinions and from those who support a person's right to speak without being owned because of an endorsement contract. I want you to know that this is one former customer that you've lost by your actions.

The View From Mr. Hawk

A Look Back

On July 26, 2001:

Bush looked to be King George the last in the polls
The Governor of Texas signed an order to establish a commision which was to get people to go out in 100 degree heat and exercise.
Mick Jagger, Dorthy Hamill, Sandra Bullock and Kevin Spacey all marked their birthdays.
Tim Burton's new film Planet Of The Apes is projected to be THE summer blockbuster in its opening next weekend.
Stock markt analysists say there is no need to worry about OPEC cutting production as there is a glut of oil on the market. They also predict that the 3rd quarter of 2001 will be the time that the stock market will rebound and begin its climb back to 11,000 DOW and 2500 NASDAQ.
Microsoft contimues on its march to get its new system XP into markets by October. They cheerfully say this will be the easyist to use, most secure system ever.
A little infant page begins to amuse the web. It and its big brother (Bartcop) have a alomsot perverse desire to bring the truth to the world.
Congrats Marty - and here's to many more.

Tops $100 Million

`Fahrenheit 9/11'

Michael Moore joined the $100 million club as his political assault "Fahrenheit 9/11" became the first documentary ever to top that mark at the domestic box office.

"Fahrenheit 9/11," Moore's condemnation of resident Bush's actions regarding the Sept. 11 attacks, had a weekend haul of $5 million to lift its total to $103.35 million since opening in late June.

The previous best domestic gross for a feature-length documentary was $21.6 million for Moore's Academy Award-winning "Bowling for Columbine." That film took nine months to hit that level, while "Fahrenheit 9/11" did more business, $23.9 million, in just its first weekend.

Moore said he had hoped to have "Fahrenheit 9/11" out on DVD before the November election, but that the film could continue to play in theaters through year's end and into 2005.

"So I don't know really what that means now in terms of the DVD," Moore said.

Next Season

'The Simpsons'

One of the veteran cartoon stars of "The Simpsons" is coming out of the closet.

The betting on who it might be would seem to favor sniveling yes-man Waylon Smithers, who for years has harbored a secret crush on his boss, the evil nuclear tycoon Mr. Burns. But the show's producers refused to tell the audience at Comic-Con if he's the one.

"We have a show where, to raise money, Springfield legalizes gay marriage," producer Al Jean told a gathering of thousands at the convention. "Homer becomes a minister by going on the Internet and filling out a form. A longtime character comes out of the closet, but I'm not saying who."

Among the celebrity guest stars Comic-Con attendees were told will appear on "The Simpsons" next season are Ray Romano, James Caan, Kim Cattrall and rapper 50 Cent.

Offer Inside View of Convention

Bloggers

The food at receptions, the wonkish policy details debated over breakfast, the gossip on the convention floor - in an age when the personal is political, blogs and conventions are a natural fit.

Dozens of delegates are writing for Web logs, or "blogs," promising the folks back home their take - up close and personal - on the pomp and politics of the Democratic National Convention.

Delegate bloggers play a different role than traditional media or even other bloggers, said New York University journalism professor Jay Rosen, who is covering the convention for his blog.

"You can't apply to it the criteria of news or even punditry," Rosen said. "One shouldn't expect startling new information because that's not the point. The point is to share the experience."

Clips Used in Movie 'Sky Captain'

Laurence Olivier

It has been 15 years since the death of renowned British actor Laurence Olivier - but he's making a Hollywood comeback. Footage of the actor in his youth is used to create the villainous human leader of an army of gigantic killer robots for the fantasy adventure "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow."

Jude Law, who stars as Sky Captain, said at the annual Comic-Con International sci-fi convention that it was a dream come true to perform alongside - sort of - the classically trained Olivier.

"He plays my nemesis. And he's referred to throughout the movie so you know eventually you're going to get to see this bad guy," Law said. "It builds up, and you only see him in the last minutes, and he's in hologram form."

New dialogue was recorded by another actor for Olivier's voice, and his image comes from assorted films and archive footage.

Cher and her daughter, Chastity Bono, will executive produce "Family Outing," a chronicle of "coming-out" stories based on Chastity's book of the same name. Chastity will also host.

Among the other projects are "The Alan Cumming Experience," which features the "X-Men" actor hosting a cabaret-like variety show; "Fantastic Voyage," a reality series set on an ocean-liner cruise hosted by Griffin ("The D List"); "My Fabulous Gay Wedding," which focuses on gay nuptials, with actor Scott Thompson ("Kids in the Hall") hosting; and "Do I?" which gauges whether couples are ready for marriage.

The channel's schedule will primarily be initially composed of more than 150 acquired movies and documentaries with gay themes, including "Gods and Monsters" and "An Early Frost." The original programming will hit the airwaves in the months after launch.

To Greet Elevator Riders

Video Screens

Gannett Co. and a young company the media giant bought in April are teaming up to cash in on those awkward moments of avoiding eye contact that can make an elevator a place of silent suffering.

Enter elevator video, which gives office workers something to do with their riding time but also intrudes on one of the few remaining places to get relief from information overload.

Gannett and Captivate Network, along with a handful of smaller foreign and domestic rivals, see the elevator as a sort of upwardly mobile theater where viewers can digest news headlines, sports scores, weather updates and - of course - advertisements.

Show Personal Side

Einstein Letters

Inside a climate-controlled room at Vassar College's main library, among neatly stacked rows of first-edition Jane Austens and George Eliots, rests a different but equally valuable and rare collection - original Albert Einstein's letters.

The famed physicist, who was named Time Magazine's Person of the 20th Century, was a prolific letter writer to his friends, discussing real-world events and politics, some of them ominous, such as the Nazis' rise to power in the 1930s in Germany.

The collection, considered one of the largest and most diverse Einstein collections in the United States, is a gift from a Vassar alumna who befriended economist Otto Nathan, a fiercely protective friend of Einstein who briefly taught at Vassar and later became the sole executor of Einstein's estate.

When Nathan died in 1987 at age 93, he left boxes of his possessions including hand-penned letters he received from Einstein, to his former Vassar student Adele Gabel Bergreen and her husband, Morris.

Last fall, Mrs. Bergreen donated more than 150 of Einstein's original letters, inscribed books, manuscripts and photographs to her alma mater, a small liberal arts college 70 miles north of New York City.

For the rest, Einstein Letters

How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican musicians?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?
This is your place.
