Re: John Travolta

Hi Marty -

I think you've got the sense of this already, since you inserted a <<(sic)>> into the article - John Travolta probably has 5,000 *hours* as pilot in command of various aircraft. The detail must have come from a copy desk editor or writer who doesn't know anything about being a pilot. In any event, it got past a copy desk editor . . . who needs to give the news operation a refund for their work on that story.

5,000 miles would be about two hops for Travolta in his Gulfstream bizjet.

Regards,

Tom B

Thanks, Tom!
I think John probably had more than 5000 miles under his belt back when he still playing Vinnie Barbarino.

Marty,

Last month I went to Russian Samovar for my bday....we were sitting next to Baryshnikov and Pavel Bure...I got to meet them both, drank vodka with them, and took some pictures...cool people...and a great place! If you're ever in NYC, check it out...their home-made vodka is to die for!

Dean Flashmob

Thought you could spread the word about the Dean Flashmob on 11/4 between 5 & 6 pm. Just click on the web address in the message below. Even if you don't support Dean, but don't support Bush either, you can see the Doonsbury-esque-ness to it. I see it as a wake up call to America. Is that too corny?

Dear Deaniacs,

I am writing to urge you to please participate in as many of the upcoming November Dean for President promoting events as you can. Here are just a few you can choose from, there may be more listed on the get local link on www.DeanforAmerica.

They will be thrilled to see somebody working to Fire Bu$h! Brian Schatz has very kindly made a web page of ideas that you can do at this link he calls it Stupor Tuesday!

This image photographed at 6:30 AM Alaska Standard Time, October 29, 2003 shows aurora near Eureka, Alaska over the Chugach mountains, about 110 miles northeast of Anchorage. The orange in the photo is not aurora, but the sunrise. The twilight affects the color of the aurora, giving them more of a pastel color, and also shifted the common green aurora to a light blue. A second huge magnetic solar storm hit Earth October 30, just a day after an earlier one hurtled into the planet in what one astronomer called an unprecedented one-two punch. 'It's like the Earth is looking right down the barrel of a giant gun pointed at us by the sun ... and it's taken two big shots at us,' said John Kohl of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Massachusetts.

Man With An Opinion

Noam Chomsky

Noted US linguist and left-wing social critic Noam Chomsky said he was surprised at the failed US policy in Iraq, especially after such a relatively easy invasion.

The 74-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor said it took "real talent" to botch things up as badly as the United States has in Iraq, especially in view of the prostrate state of the country after years of UN sanctions.

Chomsky, who on Tuesday addressed the 25th assembly of the Latin American Council on Social Sciences, at which Cuban President Fidel Castro was also present, also mused on Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar -- one of several world leaders who supported the US-British-led invasion of Iraq.

Aznar, Chomsky said through an interpreter, decided to shine the boots of US resident George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

He said everyone knew that Aznar followed orders from Texas (Bush's home state) even against the wishes of his own people, who were largely opposed to the Iraq War.

Offers Outfits in Online Charity Auction

Barbra Streisand

Entertainer Barbra Streisand is to auction off hundreds of her outfits and items of personal memorabilia for the first time to benefit charities close to her heart.

The initial item for sale on eBay will be one of Streisand's most recognizable outfits -- the Arnold Scaasi-designed two piece evening pantsuit she wore in 1969 to collect her best actress Oscar for "Funny Girl." The pantsuit will carry a reserve price of $1,000.

The Internet auction, starting on Friday, will offer famous items from her wardrobe and other effects. It will last for at least a year, giving what organizers say is a rare opportunity for fans to buy into one of the world's most collectible celebrities.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit charities and causes served by the Streisand Foundation, including the Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, which works for gay and lesbian rights.

Hosting CNBC Show

Dennis Miller

Dennis Miller, the sardonic comedian who delivered a fake newscast on "Saturday Night Live" and told jokes in the "Monday Night Football" booth, will host a prime-time political talk show on CNBC.

The network said Thursday it had inked Miller to a multiyear deal for the political chat show, set to begin in January.

Miller said he would work four nights a week at 9 p.m. ET.

He said he's looking forward to competing in the political talk realm with people like Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly, who Miller said "runs a good show."

Miller, a registered Republican, has become increasingly known for his political views. He bashed anti-war activists on a "Tonight" show appearance last spring, calling filmmaker Michael Moore a "stupid moron" for criticizing President Bush at the Academy Awards.

Miller's show will be taped each night at NBC's studios in Burbank. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.

Recording Album

Agnetha Faeltskog

Former ABBA singer Agnetha Faeltskog is recording her first album in 16 years and plans to release it early next year.

"It's far from ready, but we're counting on releasing it in March," Staffan Linde, the head of Faeltskog's production company, said Wednesday.

Linde declined to give details about the album and said Faeltskog, 53, wouldn't comment on her comeback until the album is finished. Distribution would likely be handled by Warner Music, but no deal had been signed, he said.

A founding member of ABBA, the 1970s pop phenomenon and Sweden's most popular music export, the blond-haired Faeltskog withdrew from the public eye after releasing her last solo album "I Stand Alone" in 1987.

L.A.M.B. Clothes

Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani's new line of clothes, L.A.M.B., has all the hallmarks of the No Doubt singer's style: bikini tops, Rasta-inspired colors, low-slung pants, even bum flaps.

A bum flap is a piece of fabric that looks like half of a pleated skirt, and it can be attached to the back of pants, worn slung across one hip or stacked for a layered effect.

After designing a collection of L.A.M.B. handbags for LeSportsac, the spring collection will be the first try at a clothes line for the 34-year-old singer, who has also branched out into acting, playing Jean Harlow in Martin Scorsese's upcoming "The Aviator."

Stefani's style — an amalgam of skater punk, street style and 1940s glamour — is evident throughout the line.

Hosting Nobel Concert

Douglas, Zeta-Jones

When the organizers of the annual Nobel Peace Prize concert asked Michael Douglas to host the event, the actor asked if his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, could lend a hand.

"That was our first choice, but we didn't dare to ask for both at the same time," concert organizer Odd Arvid Stroemstad said Thursday. "It didn't take us long to say `yes.'"

Douglas and Zeta-Jones will act as co-masters of ceremony at the Dec. 11 concert in Oslo, the day after Iranian lawyer, writer and human rights activist Shirin Ebadi accepts her 2003 Nobel Peace Prize.

Tim McGraw, the Chieftains accompanied by Rosanne Cash, the Cardigans, opera stars Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu, Senegal's Orchestra Baobab and Broadway performer Martin Yates are among those scheduled to perform.

Some Picks Up

ABC

ABC has ordered full seasons for all its comedies which debuted this fall and two of the new dramas, the network said on Thursday, in an early vote of confidence for its new slate of shows.

The future of revamped police procedural "LA Dragnet" and critically acclaimed, quirky crime drama "Karen Sisco" are still up in the air, although the network has ordered four more scripts for "Sisco," said Kevin Brockman, spokesman for the network owned by Walt Disney Co .

Mismatched sisters comedy "Hope & Faith," boy meets superstar series "I'm with Her," and oddball family comedies "It's All Relative" and "Married to the Kellys" all got orders for an extra nine episodes to round out the season.

Cop drama "10-8" and spy thriller "Threat Matrix," which had both been seen as candidates for cutting, also were picked up.

Signs Deal With NBC

Macaulay Culkin

"Home Alone" star Macaulay Culkin has signed a deal with NBC to develop several projects, including a possible sitcom in fall 2004, according to Variety.

Culkin has met with "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien and may work on a project with him, NBC spokesman Kevin Reilly told the trade paper.

"We're going to use him in an unconventional way," Reilly told Variety. "I don't think you'll see Macaulay as a straight-down-the-middle romantic lead. I think you'll see him in something surprising, a little offbeat."

Defend Canadian DVD Sales

Rolling Stones

Mick Jagger is defending the Rolling Stones' decision to sell their new DVD box set "Four Flicks" through Best Buy and no other music retailers.

"This is not like not allowing them to sell some Blockbuster movie, which is going to sell 2 million DVDs in first week, you know, a 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' or something like that," Jagger told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Three big music chains in Canada announced they were pulling some of the band's merchandise and music off shelves in protest after learning of the deal.

Trial Opens

Rosie O'Donnell

Lawyers for Rosie O'Donnell and the publisher of her now-defunct magazine, Rosie, squared off in court Thursday, each charging the other with destroying the publication by seeking complete control.

The magazine, launched in 2001, folded soon after O'Donnell resigned in September 2002. G+J is seeking $100 million from O'Donnell; she asks $125 million in a countersuit.

The trial is expected to feature differing accounts of O'Donnell's style as the editorial inspiration of Rosie, which essentially subsumed the failing publication, McCall's.

Birthplace Split in Auction

Cole Porter

The sale of jazz composer Cole Porter's birthplace was a duet of sorts, but it wasn't harmonious.

Two men bought the house at a Miami County tax auction last week. But the bidders weren't partners — they split the property, which was sold in two separate parcels.

The house where Porter was born rests on two neighboring lots which were divided for the auction last Thursday, said Michele Mullins of the county treasurer's office.

Local resident Brian Boyce won one parcel with an $800 proxy bid, but a Michigan man outbid him on the second, which sold for $9,000.

Both bidders must wait a year before making any such move. The original owner can regain the property if he pays the overdue taxes and penalties within that time.

No Exploitation in Sweatshop Case

Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs

Honduran officials said on Thursday they had found no evidence of workers' exploitation at a factory producing clothing by hip-hop and fashion entrepreneur Sean Combs.

Under instructions from President Ricardo Maduro, the Honduras Labor Ministry launched an investigation after New York-based workers' rights activists said this week that Combs used "sweatshops" in the Central American nation to produce his trendy Sean John fashion line.

The U.S. National Labor Committee said factory managers cursed at Honduran workers, refused to pay overtime, or fired them when they became pregnant.

Ordered to Live-In Drug Programs

Scott Weiland

Former Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland was ordered on Thursday to report to a live-in detox program followed by six months in a residential drug rehab center.

The court order followed Weiland's arrest on Monday -- his 36th birthday -- for crashing into a parked car in Hollywood and leaving the scene of the accident. He was charged with driving under the influence.

Pasadena Superior Court Commissioner Collette Serio said on Thursday that she would allow Weiland out of the residential facility for a 10-day period starting Nov. 7 for four hours a day so that he can finish recording an album with his new band Velvet Revolver.

Weiland will be taken to the recording studio by a police officer and tested for drugs immediately on his return.

Filmmaker Guilty

Michael Linley

British wildlife filmmaker Michael Linley pleaded guilty in an Australian court on Thursday to some 30 charges of trying to smuggle almost 200 protected animals out of Australia, a court official said.

Linley was caught with 187 frogs, lizards and 26 eggs in his luggage during an x-ray examination at Perth International Airport on October 20, local media reported.

Local media reported that court prosecutors said the animals Linley tried to smuggle included three cockroaches, marbled geckos, clicking froglets, squelching froglets, desert tree frogs, western bearded dragons, skinks and snakes.

Linley has been released on bail until he is sentenced in December. The offences each carry a maximum jail term of 10 years. The animals have been returned to the wild.
