Americans Flock to Get On

NRA Blacklist

Most blacklists are designed to intimidate. But thousands of Americans are clamoring to join one drawn up by the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Actor Dustin Hoffman was so dismayed to find his name missing from the NRA's shadowy 19-page list of U.S. companies, celebrities, and news organizations seen as lending support to anti-gun policies that he wrote to the powerful pro-gun lobby group begging to be included.

Hoffman's name has now been added to the list which reads like a Who's Who of American business, culture and religion and which ranges from the American Jewish Congress to A&M Records, ABC News and talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.

The list was found deep in the official NRA Web site by a group of grass-roots anti-gun campaigners and publicized by them two weeks ago to garner support for two pieces of gun control legislation going through Congress.

The campaigners set up their own Web site (www.NRAblacklist.com) and urged Americans to voluntarily put their names there. A full-page ad Tuesday in Daily Variety -- the Hollywood trade magazine -- urged movie and music artists to sign up.

Finally Meets J.Lo

NYC Mayor Bloomberg

Ben and Jen finally made it to City Hall, but it had nothing to do with a marriage license.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were there to visit Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who expressed his admiration for Lopez a few months ago.

Bloomberg earlier said he would be charmed to meet the pop star who hails from the Bronx.

Lopez showed up at City Hall, with Affleck in tow, for the formation of a new commission to attract Latino entertainment and media to the city. Lopez will be its honorary chairwoman.

Judge Refuses to Release

Tommy Chong

A federal judge ruled that Tommy Chong's prison sentence for conspiracy to sell drug paraphernalia would likely stand and refused to release him from jail pending an appeal.

The 65-year-old actor and comedian, best-known for his portrayal of a drug-addled ne'er-do-well in the Cheech and Chong movies, pleaded guilty to conspiracy last spring in federal court and was sentenced to nine months in prison.

He reported Oct. 8 to begin serving his prison term. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Arthur Schwab was dated Thursday.

Faux News vs. 'The Simpsons'

Matt Groening

Rupert Murdoch's Fox News Channel threatened to sue the makers of "The Simpsons" over a parody of the channel's right-wing political stance, the creator of the hit US television show has claimed.

According to Matt Groening, Fox took exception took a Simpsons' version of the Fox News rolling news ticker which parodied the channel's anti-Democrat stance, with headlines like "Do Democrats Cause Cancer?"

"We called their bluff because we didn't think Rupert Murdoch would pay for Fox to sue itself. So, we got away with it."

Other satirical Fox news bulletins featured in the show included: "Study: 92 per cent of Democrats are gay... JFK posthumously joins Republican Party... Oil slicks found to keep seals young, supple..."

Canadian Music Retailers PO'd

Rolling Stones

Canadians shopping for music this Christmas may have to cross the Rolling Stones off their wish list after retailers yanked their products in protest.

Major music chains vowed on Wednesday to keep the band's music off their shelves indefinitely after the Stones' made an exclusive deal with U.S. retailer Best Buy Co. Inc. to carry its new four-disc DVD, "Four Flicks," due next month.

The deal extends to Best Buy's Canadian outlets, shutting out other retailers.

Retailers said they will boycott the Stones indefinitely unless they are allowed to carry the new material.

Lawsuit Filed

Michael Moore

James Nichols, the brother of Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols, says he was tricked into appearing in the documentary "Bowling for Columbine," according to a federal lawsuit he filed against filmmaker Michael Moore.

Nichols also alleges in the lawsuit, filed Monday in Detroit, that Moore libeled him by linking him to the terrorist act.

He accuses Moore of libel, defamation of character, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. His lawyer is asking for a jury trial and damages ranging from $10 million to $20 million on each of nine counts, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Full Season to 'Whoopi,' 'Happy Family'

NBC

NBC gave the seal of approval on Wednesday to two new comedies with well-known stars, ordering a full season of both "Whoopi" and "Happy Family."

In a statement, the network said it ordered nine additional episodes of each show, giving them a full-season order of 22.

While NBC is off 12 percent this season in the audience of adults 18 to 49 that is key to advertisers, both shows have improved the network's ratings in that demographic over the same time periods last season.

Tearful L.A. Reporter

Chuck Henry

A veteran Los Angeles TV reporter wept on air Tuesday, moments after a firefighter rescued him from flames that engulfed his news van as he covered the California wildfires.

During a report charged with emotion, Chuck Henry of NBC-owned KNBC credited a single firefighter with saving him from thick smoke and flames that raged around him and his cameraman, Christopher Li, in the Lake Arrowhead area northeast of L.A. Both Henry and Li escaped injury, though the station's mobile broadcast unit was destroyed.

The TV van already was on fire when Henry was pulled out. A KNBC spokeswoman added: "(Henry and Li) saw a wall of flame and then heard a fireman calling Chuck's name. And the fireman came into the smoky area and got Chuck and Christopher and put them into a fire truck."

Henry went live on air immediately after the dramatic rescue to deliver a tense account of his narrow escape and credited the fireman with saving his life. Fellow KNBC reporter Kyung Lah, with photographer Joel Cooke, assisted Henry in relaying his report as Henry's broadcast unit went up in flames close by.

New Album Ordered by God

Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray Cyrus had to record his new gospel album.

Not only does he come from a family tree with a Pentecostal preacher and a gospel choir leader, he also says God instructed him to make the album.

Cyrus told the New York Daily News that he had a vision of God telling him to make a gospel album, and then moments later he got a call from Nashville producer Billy Joe Walker asking him to record one.

Wife Files for Separation

Lionel Richie

The wife of "Dancing on the Ceiling" singer Lionel Richie filed for a separation Wednesday after nearly seven years of marriage.

Richie and Diane Alexander, a former dancer and clothing designer, were married in New York in 1996 after a long and sometimes tumultuous relationship.

The couple's relationship began when Richie was still married to his first wife, Brenda. In 1988, Brenda Richie was arrested for investigation of spousal abuse, trespassing and vandalism when she allegedly accosted her husband and Alexander after discovering them together in a Beverly Hills apartment.

She was not prosecuted, and the couple remained together before divorcing in 1991.

Arrested After Hollywood Car Crash

Scott Weiland

Days after a judge warned him to stay off drugs, ill-starred rocker Scott Weiland marked his 36th birthday by crashing into a parked car in Hollywood and leaving the scene, Los Angeles police said on Wednesday.

The former singer with chart-topping rock band Stone Temple Pilots was quickly arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following the incident, which happened early Monday morning. He was released later that day after posting $15,000 bail.

Weiland has a long history of inter-related drug and legal problems. Most recently, he entered a no-contest plea to two felony drug possession charges in August, and was ordered to enter a drug counseling program. He has completed most of the requirements, and on Oct. 20 a Pasadena judge allowed him to remain free as long as he stayed clean.

Baby Rapist Cops Plea

Joseph Lehman Jr

A man accused of raping his infant daughter has pleaded guilty in a deal that could spare him years in prison.

Joseph Lehman Jr., 38, whose father heads the state Corrections Department, pleaded guilty to child rape charges Tuesday in King County Superior Court.

If a judge concurs with the agreement, Lehman Jr. would serve six months in jail, receive at least three years of treatment for sexual deviancy and be under lifetime corrections supervision.

The standard state sentence for first-degree child rape is seven to 10 years in prison. Sentencing is set for Dec. 5.

Lehman Jr.'s daughter was 2 months old when the child's mother, Roxanne Crowder, his fiancee at the time, said she saw him molest the baby at their home Dec. 6.

Lehman told investigators he also fondled a 9-year-old girl in 1997 when he lived in Maine, but the incident was never reported to authorities.

In 1989 Lehman Jr. was convicted of orchestrating the robbery of a bank security vehicle that was delivering $25,000 to automated teller machines in Tacoma and served one day in jail. His accomplice served a month and a half in jail.
