Re: goodsearch.com

hi marty,

I'm at work but I wanted to share this search engine with you (seeing as how you had a link to the top ten search engines yesterday), which is one way of searching and giving at the same time.

whenever you search the Internet you can now make a difference - money goes to your favorite charity or school - GoodSearch.com.

thanks for the heads up on the Harry Nilsson bio, he's one of my faves.

hope The Kid feels better before the holiday and I sure hope YOU don't get sick too!

Thanks, ducks!
Harry Nilsson's 'You're Breaking My Heart' was in heavy rotation on the old 8-track the first time I drove to Alaska.

Geov Parrish: Making Sense of the Abramoff Scandal (AlterNet.org)
It's a sordid tale of Washington corruption and crony capitalism at its worst. Here's a primer to help you understand this growing scandal.

Joe Bageant: What the 'Left Behind' Series Really Means (joebageant.com)
"Jesus merely raised one hand a few inches and a yawning chasm opened in the earth, stretching far and wide enough to swallow all of them. They tumbled in, howling and screeching, but their wailing was soon quashed and all was silent when the earth closed itself again." -- From Glorious Appearing by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins

Laura Sheahen: Nobody Is a Stranger (Beliefnet; Posted on alternet.org)
Activist and actor Susan Sarandon talks about 'hands-on spirituality,' why New York is her extended family, and how to exercise your heart muscle by doing the right thing.

Molly Ivins: 'Good old Constitutional crisis' (smirkingchimp.com)
Here is a curious fact about the government of this country spying on its citizens: It always goes wrong immediately. For some reason, it's not as though we start with people anyone would regard as suspicious and then somehow slip gradually into spying on the Girl Scouts. We get it wrong from the beginning every time. Never seem to be able to distinguish between a terrorist and a vegetarian.

Bill Gallagher: 'WAR ON CHRISTMAS' A DISTRACTION (niagarafallsreporter.com)
Congressman John Dingell (D-Mich.), who just marked his 50th year in the House of Representatives, offered this poem prior to passage of House Resolution 579 aimed at protecting Christmas.

'Twas a week before Christmas and all through the House,
no bills were passed 'bout which Fox News could grouse.
Tax cuts for the wealthy were passed with great cheer,
so vacations in St. Barts soon should be near.
Katrina kids were all nestled snug in motel beds,
while visions of school and home danced in their heads.
In Iraq, our soldiers need supplies and a plan,
and nuclear weapons are being built in Iran.
Gas prices shot up, consumer confidence fell.
Americans feared we were in a fast track to ... well.
Wait, we need a distraction, something divisive and wily,
a fabrication straight from the mouth of O'Reilly.
We will pretend Christmas is under attack,
hold a vote to save it, then pat ourselves on the back.
Silent Night, First Noel, Away in the Manger,
Wake up, Congress, they're in no danger.
This time of year, we see Christmas everywhere we go,
From churches to homes to schools and, yes, even Costco.
What we have is an attempt to divide and destroy
when this is the season to unite us with joy.
At Christmastime, we're taught to unite.
We don't need a make-up reason to fight.
So on O'Reilly, on Hannity, on Coulter and those right-wing blogs.
You should sit back and relax, have a few egg nogs.
'Tis the holiday season; enjoy it a pinch.
With all our real problems, do we really need another Grinch?
So to my friends and my colleagues, I say with delight,
a Merry Christmas to all, and to Bill O'Reilly, Happy Holidays.

E. B. White: On Christmas (newyorker.com; from 1949)
To perceive Christmas through its wrappin becomes more difficult with every year.

Hendrik Hertzberg: Bah Humbug (newyorker.com)
O'Reilly sat out Vietnam. In the war on the War on Christmas, however, he not only has been in the trenches but has gone over the top. "I am not going to let oppressive, totalitarian, anti-Christian forces in this country diminish and denigrate the holiday!" he said the other day. And, "I'm going to use all the power that I have on radio and television to bring horror into the world of people who are trying to do that!" And, "There is no reason on this earth that all of us cannot celebrate a public holiday devoted to generosity, peace, and love together!" And, "And anyone who tries to stop us from doing it is gonna face me!"

David Bruce: Wise Up: Christmas (athensnews.com)
When Fanny Brice's husband Nicky Arnstein went to jail, Fanny kept the truth from their children, telling them that their father was working in Paris. For Christmas, the children wrote their father, telling him that they wanted a pair of rabbits for Christmas. Fanny therefore arranged to have two rabbits shipped from Paris to their home, along with lots of food and water to keep the rabbits healthy. However, when the crate was opened in the United States, many more than two rabbits hopped out -- the journey had been long, and the rabbits had been doing what rabbits do. The children thought that their father had been especially generous that Christmas.

Christmas Song Parodies

This website has some of the funniest Christmas song parodies I ever heard. Some get a bit naughty... but even some of the tame ones are brilliant. Sharon first discovered this on XM Radio, but the website is packed with songs.

The singer has Karen Carpenter's voice down pat on "Flu Ride".

The first one that really cracked me up was "All You Need Is Elves" -- from the opening orchestral stuff resembling the French National Anthem in the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" on...

Today's discovery was "Decorations", the parody of the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations".

Bob Rivers

These are "just the ticket" for people needing to snap out of a "holiday slump".

Bachelor Party

Elton John

Celebrities mobbed a West End nightclub for a glitzy bachelor party to toast the upcoming civil union between Elton John and David Furnish.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Elizabeth Hurley, Bryan Adams, Gary Barlow and Kid Rock were among those who streamed into the gala event Monday night in London's Soho neighborhood. John and Furnish slipped into the Too2Much venue just minutes before the show started.

Shirtless waiters wearing black ties and riding boots served guests flutes of champagne. The nightclub, once a strip club known as Raymond's Revue Bar, features an auditorium with red leather and banquette seating, a bar decorated with Swarovski crystals, chairs dipped in rubber and sculptured glass walls.

The star-studded bash came ahead of a private ceremony to seal the couple's civil partnership.

Returns Home

Don Ho

Legendary Hawaiian crooner Don Ho, who had an experimental procedure on his ailing heart two weeks ago in Thailand, returned home to Honolulu on Monday.

"He is continuing his rest and recuperation at an undisclosed location," said Ho's publicist Donna Jung. "We're delighted to say that his health is improving dramatically."

Ho, known for his signature tune "Tiny Bubbles," underwent a new treatment Dec. 6 that has not been approved in the United States. It involves multiplying stem cells taken from his blood and injecting them into his heart in hopes of strengthening the organ.

Ho was among the first patients selected for the VesCell adult stem cell therapy.

Sues 'Us Weekly' for $20M

Britney Spears

Britney Spears filed a $20 million libel lawsuit Monday against celebrity magazine Us Weekly, charging it published a false story reporting she and her husband, Kevin Federline, made a sex tape and were worried about its release.

The lawsuit seeks $10 million in libel damages and $10 million for misappropriating Spears' name and image to promote sales. It also seeks unspecified punitive damages.

According to the lawsuit, the article was published Oct. 17 in the magazine's "Hot Stuff" column and claimed that Spears and her husband feared the release of a secret sex tape, which they had viewed with their estate planning lawyers.

According to the lawsuit, Spears went to court after Us Weekly refused her request for a retraction, saying it stood by the story.

French Antitrust Group Fines

Buena Vista

France's antitrust regulator Tuesday slapped a 14.4 million euros ($17.2 million) fine on Buena Vista Home Entertainment Inc., a unit of Walt Disney Co., and three French retailers for fixing home video prices between 1995 and 1998.

The antitrust watchdog said the four companies were guilty of "particularly serious infractions."

"BVHE initiated a vertical collusion with retailers Casino and Carrefour, as well as with wholesale company SDO, aimed at setting the retail price of Disney home videos artificially high," the regulator said.

Credits Friend After Neck Injury

Brooke Burns

Former "Baywatch" star Brooke Burns, who broke her neck last month after diving into her backyard pool, credits a friend, a paramedic firefighter, with saving her life.

"I literally broke my neck. It's a classic neck break from chin to chest," the actress told "Access Hollywood" in an interview that was set to air Monday night. "If I had been alone, I would probably be dead."

Burns said her friend "saw me dive in, and he wrapped a wet towel around my neck and basically immobilized me and floated me in the pool until the paramedics came, so he saved my life."

"If I had been with anyone else that tried to move me, I would be at least half-paralyzed, if not completely paraplegic," she said.

Special Treatment For Special People

Victoria Osteen

The wife of the pastor of the nation's largest church was asked to leave a plane after she failed to comply with a flight attendant's instructions, the FBI said Tuesday.

Houston Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen, his wife, Victoria, and their two children boarded a Continental Airlines flight from Houston to Vail, Colo., Monday. The plane's door had been closed when Victoria Osteen and a flight attendant had a disagreement.

The flight was delayed more than an hour while the Osteens' luggage was retrieved. The family took another flight to Colorado, where church spokesman Don Iloff said they were skiing Tuesday.

Austrian Mayor Tries to Woo

$chwarzenegger

The mayor of Arnold $chwarzenegger's Austrian hometown on Tuesday begged the California governor to reconsider his decision to end ties to the city after locals assailed him for his death penalty stance.

Siegfried Nagl, mayor of the southern city of Graz, said he dashed off a letter to $chwarzenegger pleading with him not to return a ring of honor bestowed on him by officials in his birthplace in 1999 and reassuring him that most residents still admire him.

On Monday, $chwarzenegger caused a stir by turning the tables on Austrians who criticized the governor's refusal to block the executions of convicted killers. He sent Graz officials a letter asking them to remove his name from a soccer stadium and stop using it to promote the city, and said he was giving back the ring because it "has lost its meaning and value to me."

His demands effectively pre-empted a drive launched by opponents in Austria who already were gathering signatures on a petition calling for the 15,300-seat arena to be renamed.

Stolen From Zoo

Baby Penguin

A baby penguin thought to have been snatched from a zoo as a quirky festive gift is unlikely to survive until Christmas Day, his keeper warned Tuesday.

Toga, a three-month old jackass penguin, was stolen from Amazon World on the Isle of Wight in southern England on Saturday.

Zoo manager Kath Bright said the bird, who was taken from a compound where he lived with his parents and four other penguins, would probably die of malnutrition if not urgently returned.

The brown and white penguin will bite if frightened and refuses to be fed by human hand, Bright said. Toga is too young to have yet had a gender confirmed, but along with tradition, is referred to as a male, she added..
