Over at the SoundUnsound bootleg forum, we're constantly mixing. Early morning, or late hours, we're putting acapellas to instrumentals. It's just what we do. The best part is we come together as community of like-minded individuals. Long in the planning has been the latest SoundUnsound themed mashup compilation. In the past, it's been Punk ,70s, 80s, Divas, and many others. This latest project comes from the nimble brain of SUS super moderator mARKYbOY, who desired an album featuring Motown label artists paired with anything else. It's a highly satisfying feeling to hear the final release of a full album from various international bootleggers. I was witness to mARKYbOY's first utterances upon the release of this new assortment. He simply exclaimed "EXCELLENT!"
I've been involved in the process at most levels and did the final production mastering for 'SoundUnsound Motwon Mashed', so I think I know it better than most. I say it's a hoot and a hollar well worth the hearing. It's been almost three months since the project was begun. Three months of joy, email and phone interaction spent arranging the constant stream of new music, art, and info into a final cohesive success. As soon as it begins you know you're on the right track. The Motown attraction is on full display alongside the thrill of the paired tunes. You get the Temptations, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and plenty more, all skillfully blended into new configurations that tickle your ears. For a quick look at the full tracklist, and a listen to two full disc length preview mixes simply click this link

Personally, I had a pretty tough time adjusting to mixing Motown. My first three tracks were just not good enough, I felt. so I began again. That time, I hit paydirt by placing Bob Dylan singing over Martha and the Vandellas. I had created 'Nowhere To Run All Along The Watchtower' (Bob Dylan vs Martha and The Vandellas). Now I was feeling the groove. Many others seemed to thrive with the style as killer mixes like DJ Spider's 'I Wish for Another 25 Miles' (Edwin Starr vs Stevie Wonder) and Voicedude's 'Forever In The Name Of Love' (Level 42 vs The Supremes vs Vanilla Ice) revealed the positive effect the Motown had on us all. Now that the collection is posted and available, I've heard much positive private reaction. In fact, two super-fine bootleggers have asked me to be involved in assembling two additional new themed comps of their own. You know I'm up for it!
Enjoy this Motown Mashed comp, and please tell your friends!
Andrew Tobias: Race, Health Care, and the S.O.P.
From the widest perspective, here's what Obamacare does: it taxes the best off - by adding a 3.8% tax on investment income for high-earning individuals - so virtually everyone can get decent health care. Democrats favor that trade, Republicans (or at least those in Congress) oppose it.

Guy Walters: Penny for Your Thoughts (Literary Review)
Over the past five years, every writer I know has been told by their agent to 'monetise the activity around their writing'. Give talks. Go to conventions. Judge prizes. Write reviews. Write articles. Go on telly. Go on radio. Go on Twitter. Build your brand. The problem with all these activities is that nobody actually wants to pay you to do them.
David Bruce: Wise Up! Names (Athens News)
When he was a child, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders had a dog named Foffy, which in its old age ate too much of everything. When Timothy's first child, Isca, was born, her eating habits resembled those of the elder Foffy, and soon Isca had a nickname: Foffy. Fortunately, when Isca became older and wanted to know where her nickname of Foffy had come from, she thought the explanation was funny.
The United States presidential election of 1960 was the 44th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 1960. The Republican Party nominated incumbent Vice-President Richard Nixon, while the Democratic Party nominated John F. Kennedy, Senator from Massachusetts. The incumbent President, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, was not eligible for re-election after serving the maximum two terms allowed by the Twenty-second Amendment. Kennedy was elected with a lead of 112,827 votes, or 0.17% of the popular vote, giving him a victory of 303 to 219 in the Electoral College, the closest since 1916. This was the first election in which all fifty of the current United States participated.
This is the first election where both candidates were born in the 20th Century.

This has also been true of every election since, I believe.

Those were the days when people felt free to speak disparingly about minorities, but were still respectful of the OFFICE of the President...
PS: I remember that election as if it were yesterday. Before hand, I heard/read nary a hint of Jack Kennedy's wandering eye. It was between he and his wife - as it should be!! People (especially men) who are quite gifted in one area, often lack in other ways. They seem to gravitate towards drink, drugs, and/or promiscuous sex. Sad, but true... OTOH, should that negate their gift to society?

I am guessing Kennedy vs Nixon in 1960.

Kennedy vs. Nixon 1960.
BttbBob answered:
I would have to say 1960... I know JFK was born in 1917 and RMN was not that much older. Ike was definitely born in the 19th century so that rules out '56... '60 it is...

No, really, that's a poem. That's why I labeled it "Poem." Cause it is. See, it rhymes. It's a poem. Umm, yeah.

Beloved cartoon characters Rocky & Bullwinkle, who've reigned over Sunset Boulevard since 1961, were removed from the Strip today.
The statue of Moose and Squirrel was carried away by a crane, as captured in this black-and-white Instagram video, which was shared by Vintage Los Angeles on Facebook.
No one knew what had happened to the iconic statue until Vintage Los Angeles received this explanation. "[It had] a severe crack in the statue that was too expensive for the landlord to repair," said Brian Watson of Posh Pet Care, which just took over the space at 8218 Sunset Boulevard, formerly inhabited by longtime tenant Hollywood Hounds. Watson posted on Facebook, "The moose is loose! Say bye to Rocky and Bullwinkle. They'll be restored and moved to Dreamworks."
Dreamworks Honcohos David Geffen and Steven Spielberg (the man who gave us Animaniacs) bought the rights to Rocky & Bullwinkle last year, removed the statue and will make the repairs, according to Curbed LA.
The L.A. Times note that the 15-foot fiberglass statue went up on September 24, 1961 in front of what was then Jay Ward Productions. At the time, the publicity stunt, "heralding the debut of The Bullwinkle Show" on NBC, drew '5,000 milling, screaming, caterwauling celebrants,'" the Times quotes a TV Guide report at the time.

Al-Jazeera America's incoming president said Tuesday that people interested in news will get live programming whenever they tune in, even in the middle of the night on a weekend.
The new cable news network will debut Aug. 20, replacing programming on what is now Current TV. Its executives are beginning the process of defining what will make Al-Jazeera America different from existing news programming on CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and the broadcast networks.
"We are going to be live, and we are going to be live 24-7," Kate O'Brian, a longtime ABC News executive appointed this week as Al-Jazeera America's president, said in an interview.
O'Brian and the network's interim chief executive officer, Ehab Al Shihabi, said the network will aim at establishing itself with serious, in-depth reporting that does not take political sides.
The network will have 12 domestic bureaus when it starts and will also have access to more than 70 international bureaus as part of the worldwide Al-Jazeera company. Its new executives suggested that the deep-pocketed Al Jazeera, based in Qatar, could immediately give the new U.S. network an edge in covering stories from across the country.
British musician Roy Harper speaks to a reporter during an interview in London in this picture provided by Joshua Gaunt taken July 19, 2013. After decades as a critically acclaimed but fringe figure in folk-rock music, British singer-songwriter Harper is suddenly finding himself in demand. Aged 72 and some 50 years into his career, Harper has been "discovered" by the young - drawn by his complex, intelligent lyrics and his persona as poetic outsider.

Oscar-winning Spanish actress Penelope Cruz gave birth to her second child with husband Javier Bardem, a girl, on Monday in a Madrid hospital, a source familiar with the situation said.
Spanish media reported the birth earlier on Tuesday, citing a hospital representative, though Madrid's Clinica Ruber declined to confirm the news and representatives for Cruz and Bardem could not be reached for comment.
Cruz and Bardem are the only Spanish actors to have won academy awards, both for supporting roles. They first met on the set of a Spanish film in 1992 but got together after starring in Woody Allen's 2008 comedy "Vicky Cristina Barcelona".
They are due to appear together in supporting roles in "The Counselor", a film directed by Ridley Scott, scheduled for release later this year.
Troubled actress Amanda Bynes has been taken to a hospital for involuntary psychiatric care after the former teen star was involved in a disturbance in Southern California, authorities said on Tuesday.
Don Aguilar, a spokesman for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, declined to describe the incident that prompted deputies to take Bynes into custody and commit her for psychiatric evaluation.
But local media reported that the 27-year-old actress had started a fire in the driveway of a home in the Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks. Bynes was born in Thousand Oaks and grew up there.
The Ventura County Fire Department confirmed that it responded on Monday night to an incident involving a gas can that was set on fire in a driveway and that Bynes was at the scene, but it would not say if she was accused of starting the fire.
"Despicable Me 2" has been denied a theatrical release in China, TheWrap has learned.
It is not clear why the country rejected the film and whether it had to do with censorship issues, but the Universal film - a juggernaut at the global box office - will not get a chance to crack the second largest film market in the world, according to a Chinese film executive.
The rejection potentially denies the film tens of millions of dollars of box-office revenue.
The decision continues what is shaping up to be a summer of frustration for Hollywood when it comes to China, where authorities turn down high-profile films like "World War Z" and send promotional activities into a nosedive.
Earlier this month, Disney was forced to cancel a visit by star Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to China to promote "The Lone Ranger" after its release date in the country became a moving target.

Singer Chris Brown's lawyer has entered a not-guilty plea for him to a hit-and-run charge that led to his parole being revoked.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney's office says charges of driving without a license and driving without proof of insurance were dismissed Tuesday after Brown's attorney presented proof he was licensed in Virginia.
Brown was charged after a May 12 traffic accident in which he is suspected of rear-ending a car stopped at a red light and refusing to give the other driver his license or insurance information.
The singer has been on felony probation in the 2009 beating of former girlfriend Rihanna. A judge revoked his probation last week and ordered a hearing. His trial in the hit-and-run case is set for Aug. 15.
True-crime author Ann Rule is suing a weekly Seattle newspaper, claiming she was defamed by a 2011 article written by the fiance of a convicted killer.
The lawsuit, filed in King County Superior Court, says freelance writer Rick Swart's story in the Seattle Weekly hurt Rule's reputation and book sales.
Swart was engaged at the time to Liysa Northon, an Oregon woman who served 12 years in prison after killing her husband.
His article was favorable to Northon, who said the killing was in self-defense. But Rule's 2003 book about the case painted Northon as a liar who tried to make it appear she was a battered spouse.
Seattle Weekly editors didn't know Swart and Northon were engaged when they published the story. The paper later issued an editor's note detailing that omission, as well as numerous errors in the piece.

Univision Radio Network yanked the Spanish-language talk show host known as "Piolin" from the air, canceling his syndicated program that urged listeners to rally for immigration reform and pushed Hispanics to wield their election clout.
Monica Talan, a Univision spokeswoman, on Tuesday confirmed that the morning show "Piolin por la Manana," hosted by Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo, had been dropped. She declined to provide a reason.
Talan said for now, music will be played in the absence of the animated Mexican-born disc jockey whose nickname means "Tweety Bird." He joined the station in 2004.
Sotelo rose to fame when he and other Spanish-language DJs used the airwaves in 2006 to propel immigrant supporters en masse into the streets of cities across the country to rally for immigrant rights.
Sotelo's program was peppered with pranks and jokes, but he also interviewed President Barack Obama and other politicians. He urged Hispanics to naturalize so they could vote, and became an American citizen himself at a 2008 ceremony teeming with media.
Marc Maron's IFC series has been renewed for a 13-episode second season, up from ten episodes this year.
The new episodes will premiere in 2014, said Jennifer Caserta, president and general manager of IFC. They will continue to chronicle Maron's portrayal of himself as a standup comedian, podcaster, and one-man cat rescue operation.
The show's first season found Maron dealing with his scheming father Larry (Judd Hirsch), younger girlfriend Jennifer (Nora Zehetner), and similarly neurotic assistant Kyle (Josh Brener). Guest stars have included Mark Duplass, Illeana Douglas, Dave Foley, Jeff Garlin, Gina Gershon, Bobcat Goldthwait, Ken Jeong, Sally Kellerman, Andy Kindler, Denis Leary, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Eric Stoltz and Danny Trejo.
Maron is the show's creator, executive producer, writer and star. Apostle's Denis Leary and Jim Serpico are also executive producers, along with Michael Jamin, Sivert Glarum, Duncan Birmingham and Olivia Wingate. The show is produced for IFC by Fox Television Studios.
Archaeologists are set to lift the lid on a stone coffin discovered at the site of the English friary where Richard III's remains were found.
Excavators suspect the tomb - billed as the only intact stone coffin found in Leicester - may contain the skeleton of a medieval knight or one of the high-status friars thought to have been buried at the church.
Richard III, the last king of the House of York, ruled England from 1483 to 1485, when was killed in battle during the War of Roses, an English civil war. He received a hasty burial at the Grey Friars monastery in Leicester as his defeater, Henry Tudor, ascended to the throne. Grey Friars was destroyed in the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation, and its ruins became somewhat lost to history.
A dig beneath a parking lot in Leicester last summer revealed the remains of Grey Friars and a battle-ravaged skeleton later confirmed to be that of Richard III. Excavators also found a handful of other graves, including this coffin, which the researchers think was put in the ground more than 100 years before Richard's burial.
They think it might contain the remains of the knight Sir William de Moton of Peckleton, who died between 1356 and 1362, or one of two heads of the Grey Friars order in England, Peter Swynsfeld or William of Nottingham.
