When you also consider the material we employed in the tracks it's no wonder the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Frances Arnold
American biochemical engineer Frances Arnold, whose discoveries in "directed evolution" have helped produce medicines, including drugs for treating diabetes, on Tuesday was awarded this year's euro 1 million ($1.2 million) Millennium Technology Prize.
The 59-year-old professor of chemical engineering, bioengineering and biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, was cited for "groundbreaking work that has a great impact on areas such as pharmaceuticals and gene therapy," with hundreds of laboratories and companies around the world using methods she developed, committee chairman Jarl-Thure Eriksson said.
In her acceptance speech, Arnold said she was inspired by the natural world, "the very best inventor and engineer of all time."
Eriksson said that Arnold - the first woman to win the award since its launch in 2004 - had been "clearly the most outstanding candidate" in a field of 79 nominations. "From the start of her career she has been a pioneer in a previously male-dominated field," he said.

EVE Auction House
Native American leaders are protesting the latest plan by a Paris auction house to sell off part of their tribal history, and their demand for the return of their ceremonial objects is getting bipartisan support.
Hundreds of religious items and art pieces from the Americas, Africa and Asia are scheduled to go up for bidding Monday at Paris' EVE auction house, including a Plains war shirt made with hair from human scalps, and sacred Hopi objects that resemble masks and are considered to be living beings by the tribe.
Ahead of the sale, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian held an "emergency meeting" Tuesday with tribal officials, the State Department and federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at the meeting was U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, a New Mexico Republican whose proposed congressional resolution urges federal agencies to seek their return.
Pearce also is calling for a study to examine how often these kinds of cultural items fall into the hands of illegal traffickers.
The Paris auctions have been a diplomatic issue for years between the United States and France, where U.S. laws prohibiting the sale of Native American ceremonial items hold no weight.

Desmond Tutu's daughter has been forced to give up her duties as a priest in South Africa's Anglican church after she married a woman, she told AFP on Tuesday.
Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu-van Furth can no longer preside at holy communion, weddings, baptisms or funerals after handing in her licence because the church does not recognise gay marriage.
She said her father, the retired archbishop and celebrated anti-apartheid campaigner, was "sad but not surprised" at the news.
"The canon (law) of the South African Church states that marriage is between one man and one woman," Tutu-van Furth said in an email.
"After my marriage... the Bishop of Saldanha Bay was advised that he must revoke my licence. I offered to return my licence rather than require that he take it from me."

White Cloud
An albino bison at the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown has returned home to the farm where she came from 20 years ago.
White Cloud returned to Shirek Buffalo near the town of Michigan on Saturday, according to the museum. She was born there July 10, 1996, and the Shirek family arranged to have her live with the museum's bison herd to make her more visible to the public. The birth of an albino bison is a rare event considered sacred by many American Indians.
White Cloud over the past two decades has had 11 calves, including another white bison named Dakota Miracle that remains a part of the herd. Another offspring of White Cloud, named Dakota Thunder, carries the albino gene and is the father of a third white buffalo, Dakota Legend.
A bison can live in captivity for 20 to 25 years, and Museum Board President Don Williams told KQDJ that Shirek Buffalo can better care for White Cloud.

After Donald Trump (R-Racist) finishes taping Jimmy Kimmel Live! at Disney's El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on Wednesday, he'll head to the Los Angeles mansion of Tom and Rachelle Barrack for an event that could be considered the GOP presumptive presidential nominee's foray into campaign fundraising.
The effort won't include many in the entertainment industry but that is expected to change, according to several insiders, most of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because they say it is too uncomfortable to be a Republican in liberal Hollywood.
In fact, several celebrities and wealthy entertainment executives tried, largely unsuccessfully, to wrangle free entrance into Wednesday's fundraiser - which costs as much as $100,000 per couple - not necessarily to save money, but because buying a ticket means they'd have to publicly disclose their choice for president earlier than they are willing to do so. By contrast, the famous guests at fundraisers for Hillary Clinton and other Democrats oftentimes are leaked to the press both before and after events to generate media coverage.
"This town will get vicious to those who support Trump," one filmmaker said whined. "It's not that Hollywood Republicans are cheap. In the end, they'll contribute, but they want to wait as long as possible."
"Celebrities" who have publicly endorsed Trump include Jon Voight, Scott Baio, Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, Robert Davi, Ann Coulter, Duck Dynasty's Phil and Willie Robertson and a handful of others. The Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee would not say whether any of the celebs were invited to Wednesday's fundraiser.

But 20 minutes after Bill Cosby offered her three blue pills and told her to take them with the wine he had set out, Andrea Constand's legs began to wobble "like jelly," her eyes went blurry and her head began to throb.
Cosby helped her to a couch in his living room, where she later realized he violated her as she lay helplessly in a stupor, she told police in 2005.
On Tuesday, a judge ordered the 78-year-old Cosby to stand trial on sexual assault charges on the strength of Constand's decade-old police statement, sparing the former Temple University employee the need to testify at the preliminary hearing.
Cosby could get 10 years in prison if convicted in the case, the only criminal charges brought against the comedian out of the barrage of allegations that he drugged and molested dozens of women over five decades. He is free on $1 million bail.

'Rampant Wage Violations'
Domino's Pizza
The state's attorney general has sued Domino's Pizza Inc., affiliates and three franchisees alleging they underpaid workers based on payroll reports generated by the parent company's computer system.
"We've uncovered rampant wage violations at Domino's franchise stores, and intensive involvement by Domino's headquarters that caused many of these violations," Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Tuesday. "At some point, a company has to take responsibility for its actions and for its workers' well-being."
Schneiderman said the company knew since at least 2007 that its PULSE system's payroll software undercalculated gross wages while still encouraging franchisees to use it.
Domino's is the largest pizza delivery company in the U.S. and gets most of its sales and profits - $272.8 million in fiscal 2015 revenues - through its franchise stores, the lawsuit said. "Yet, while the employees who deliver pizza from Domino's franchise stores are the linchpin of Domino's business, Domino's and the franchisee respondents systematically failed to pay delivery workers all of their hard-earned and lawfully owed wages."

The nation seems to be kicking its smoking habit faster than ever before.
The rate of smoking among adults in the U.S. fell to 15 percent last year thanks to the biggest one-year decline in more than 20 years, according to a new government report.
The rate fell 2 percentage points from 2014, when about 17 percent of adults in a large national survey said they had recently smoked.
The smoking rate has been falling for decades, but it usually drops only 1 point or less in a year.
The last time there was a drop nearly as big was from 1992 to 1993, when the smoking rate fell 1.5 percentage points, according to Brian King of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ancient Papyri
Ancient, magical spells of love, subjugation and sex: It may sound like a "Game of Thrones" episode, but these evildoings are also found on two recently deciphered papyri from Egypt dating to around 1,700 years ago.
One spell invokes the gods to "burn the heart" of a woman until she loves the spell caster, said Franco Maltomini of the University of Udine in Italy, who translated the two spells. Another spell, targeted at a male, uses a series of magical words to "subject" him, forcing him to do whatever the caster wants.
The two spells were not targeted at a specific person. Rather, they were written in such a way that the person who cast the spell would only need to insert the name of the person being targeted - sort of like an ancient "Mad Libs."
Researchers date the two spells to the third century A.D., but the names of the ancient spell writers are unknown. The spells are written in Greek, a language widely used in Egypt at the time.
Archaeologists Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt discovered the spells in Oxyrhynchus, Egypt, more than 100 years ago, among a haul of hundreds of thousands of papyri. Over the past century, scientists have gradually studied and translated the papyri. Many of them are now owned by the Egypt Exploration Society and are housed and studied at the University of Oxford in England.

Burt Kwouk
Burt Kwouk, an actor who played martial arts expert Cato in the comic "Pink Panther" films, has died. He was 85.
Born in northwest England in 1930 and raised in Shanghai, Kwouk had his first major film role in 1958's "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness," starring Ingrid Bergman.
Kwouk appeared in the James Bond films "Goldfinger" and "You Only Live Twice" as well as the 1967 Bond spoof "Casino Royale," and had roles in popular 1960s TV series "Secret Agent," ''The Avengers" and "The Saint."
In 1964, Blake Edwards cast him in "A Shot in the Dark," a comedy centered on Peter Sellers' bumbling Inspector Clouseau. Kwouk appeared in half a dozen more Pink Panther movies as Cato Fong, a manservant whose job was to attack Clouseau when he least expected it.
Other film appearances included Norman Jewison's sci-fi thriller "Rollerball" and Steven Spielberg's World War II drama "Empire of the Sun" and the 1980s British World War II TV series "Tenko."
Kwouk made screen appearances into his 80s, including a regular role in long-running British sitcom "Last of the Summer Wine."
In 2011, Kwouk was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, by Queen Elizabeth II for services to drama.
