M Is FOR MASHUP - *RERUN* ~ November 2nd, 2011

Mashups You Can Watch

By DJ Useo

Mashups are great when you want to hear the Rolling Stones & Madonna, but there isn't enough time for both. Having two songs (or more) coming at you at once can be a real hoot. So, imagine how overstimulated your brain will get if the experience is expanded beyond the realm of sound by adding the additional world of visuals. I'm not talking about your screensaver, your mp3-player's visualizer, or you rubbing your eyes too hard. No! A goodly number of mashup folk actually supplement their musical pilfering by scrounging up some great material into a video. The thing to remember about mashup videos is they can be very fleeting. Imagine if you had a tube that showed mashup videos, but when you clicked the link your cousin from Cleveland sent you, the video was already removed for some bizarre legalese reason called 'copyright infringement'. Spare yourself the heartbreak disappointment by experiencing the following excellent mashup videos before some busybody reports them.

01 - The B-52s vs The Atlantics star in the first vid. A Music Mashup by Rillen Rudi with a Video from the master himself, BorisB. The track is taken from the mashup compilationSound-Unsounds' 'Mash A Wave', the surf mashup album. It's not only full of flickering images of the artists used, you get the additional experience of watching the images through a mock antique tv screen. You'll be sending the link around to all your pals before you can say 'bah doo da wop!'.

02 - My big fave Cheekyboy sez 'One of the new tracks I did for the Monster Mashup Halloween 2011 CD now has a video! Thanks to Gonzojam Mindless Productions! Rob Zombie Vs Prodigy = Living Dead Temper Baby (is it's name). Hope you enjoy, don't forget to check out the new collection @ www.MONSTERMASHUPS.CO.UK "
click the link here

03 - TitusPrime has done a wonderful thing & made a video for the mashup ' Love Exploder' (Tenacious D vs Jefferson Airplane). TitusPrime says :"It has been a long time so I threw a vid together because I was missing you all so much. Not my best or most inspired work for sure, but it was fun to make and I have always loved this mashup."

I say if this is a lesser work of his,his other stuff is glorious! See for yourself here
( vimeo.com/29906378 )

04 - By order of the Management...(here's) 'Killing Kids' (Echo & The Bunnymen vs MGMT) as imagined by Phil RetroSpector. Everyone loves this MGMT track (except Beavis & Butthead in their return episode, apparently) but with the vocals of the 80's greats E&TB this will be in your head for ages!

05 - DJ LeClown may have started his own record company, but he still drops a wonderful mashup video with the best of them. ' Bootz Criminal' (Michael Jackson vs Daft Punk) is all that & a bag of salty, vinegar crisps. Great blend of music with a cool as hell video full of porn!

(Not really, no porn in it at all, but there is some great Hitchcock footage)
( vimeo.com/30902813 )

06 - The Reborn Identity informs us -"I've been spectacularly uncreative of late but I'm finally getting back into the saddle with a couple of new videos. Here's the latest." The first is ' Pressure Hurts' (- Hurts vs Queen & David Bowie vs Muse)

The second is 'Weekend Support' (Vampire Weekend vs DeadMau5)

Now, remember, the cool thing about these vids is you can have the mp3 for free. If we take money for our mashups, the government assumes we're with Al Qeuda (sic) & we're never seen again. Have fun with the mashup vids.

Mix Of The Week

'The Last Dance' is 18 new mashstep tracks from Colatron. On it, the final part of his mix trilogy he rocks your world with certainty of purpose. You can have one full track or grab it as indy tracks here

Mashup Tip : Add some gunpowder to your tracks for extra KICK!

Latest Useo Thing

'I Might Slap My Pitch Up' is a mashup using new songs from Wilco and Sander Van Doorn, mixed for demonstration purposes only. No copyrights claimed. I thought I'd throw y'all a modern bone & mash only the latest stuff. Not heard one word of feedback yet, but the varied download links are sure humming.

Up ahead, in the stream of black shapes, were the American soldiers I had come to fear. They were men who enjoyed demolishing Afghan houses, men who shot dogs in the face. The pair who had embraced like lovers, one tenderly drawing the blade of his knife along the pale, smooth skin of his friend's throat. There was a guy who'd let the others tie his legs open and mock-rape him, and there were several men who had boasted of plans to murder their ex-wives and former girlfriends.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What short story collection was originally sub-titled "The Adventures Of James Harris"?

The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson                                                      Source

The Lottery and Other Stories is a 1949 short story collection by American author Shirley Jackson. Published by Farrar, Straus, it includes "The Lottery" and 24 other stories. This was the only collection of her stories to appear during her lifetime.

Jackson's original title for this collection was The Lottery or, The Adventures of James Harris. Characters named James Harris appear in the stories "The Daemon Lover," "Like Mother Used to Make," "Elizabeth" and "Of Course." Other characters with the surname Harris appear or are referenced in "The Villager," "The Renegade," "Flower Garden," "A Fine Old Firm" and "Seven Types of Ambiguity." The collection also contains a short excerpt from the traditional ballad "The Daemon Lover," in which the title character's name is James Harris.        Source

Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres, who broke ground in 1997 as the first lead character on prime-time TV to reveal she was gay, is winning the nation's top humor prize.

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced Tuesday that DeGeneres will receive the 15th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. She will be honored Oct. 22 with a lineup of star performers in a tribute show that will be recorded for broadcast at a later date.

The New Orleans native got her start as an emcee at a local comedy club in her hometown. In 1982, a videotape of her club performance won DeGeneres Showtime's "Funniest Person in America." By 1986, she appeared on "The Tonight Show" and became the first female comedian summoned to Johnny Carson's desk to chat about her performance.

The Mark Twain prize honors people who have an impact on society in the tradition of Samuel Clemens, better known as Twain, as a social commentator and satirist.

Historic Diamond Sold For $9.7 Million

Beau Sancy

Marie de Medici wore it at her coronation as Queen Consort of Henry IV in France in 1610, and now the Beau Sancy diamond is a lavish accessory owned by an anonymous bidder who paid $9.7 million for it at Sotheby's auction.

The spring auction season for jewelry and watches is upon Geneva, where elegant lakefront hotels fill with well-heeled buyers and bidders in a scene far removed from the debate over European austerity.

Five bidders fueled the price on Tuesday at the Sotheby's sale for the Beau Sancy, a 34.98 carat diamond that had passed among the royal families in France, England, Prussia and the Netherlands. It was sold by the Royal House of Prussia, the line of descendants that once ruled Prussia.

Another historical item, the Murat Tiara, sold for $3.87 million. The pearl-and-diamond tiara was created for the marriage of a prince whose ancestors included the husband of Caroline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister.

His Girl Faces Charges

Rupert

One of Rupert Murdoch's most trusted lieutenants and five people close to her were charged Tuesday with conspiring to hide evidence of phone hacking, bringing the scandal that has raged across Britain's media and political elite uncomfortably close to Prime Minister David Cameron.

The charges against former U.K. tabloid editor Rebekah Brooks, her husband Charlie and four aides are the first prosecutions since police reopened inquiries 18 months ago into wrongdoing by the country's scandal-hungry press.

Brooks, 43, faces three separate allegations of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice - an offense that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

For years, Brooks was the star in Murdoch's media empire, the top editor of two of his tabloids, a friend of his daughter Elisabeth and a close friend of Cameron, who has known her husband Charlie Brooks since they both went to an elite high school (Eton). Cameron is a neighbor, a friend and an occasional horse-riding companion of the couple.

The law-breaking allegedly involved removing computers and files in the frantic days last summer when Murdoch shut down his tainted 168-year-old News of the World tabloid in an attempt to halt a tide of public disgust over the hacking furor.

Indonesia Shows Cancelled

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga will have to cancel her sold-out show in Indonesia following protests by Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers, who said her sexy clothes and dance moves will corrupt young people.

National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar, responding to the pressure, said Tuesday that the permit for her June 3 "Born This Way Ball" concert had been denied.

Indonesia, a nation of 240 million people, has more Muslims than any other. Although it is secular and has a long history of religious tolerance, a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years.

It was supposed to be the biggest show on Lady Gaga's Asian tour, with fans snapping up every seat in Jakarta's 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium - half of them in the first two hours of sales.

Permits usually are issued about three weeks before a concert in Jakarta, so it is common to sell tickets well ahead of receiving a permit. It was not immediately clear if the ticket sales would be refunded. The local promoter, Michael Rusli, could not be reached for comment.

Republican Bigots Deny Judgeship

Virginia

Amid the ongoing debate over President's support gay marriage and following of North Carolina's recent ban of it, Virginia's House of Delegates voted today to deny a judicial nomination to Tracy Thorne-Begland, who would have become the state's first openly gay judge. According to The New York Times' Sabrina Tavernise, Thorne-Begland received 33 "yes" votes to 31 "nays," in a vote held in the early hours on Tuesday morning, but needed a 51-vote majority of all the House delegates to be approved. All 31 nay votes came from Republicans, who claimed that Thorne-Begland's lifestyle and support for gays causes would make it impossible for him to be impartial.

Thorne-Begland was nominated for a spot on the General District Court of Richmond, where he spent the last 12 years working as a state prosecutor. His nomination was approved by House and Senate judicial committees, but opposition arose after some Republicans began to question his impartiality, particularly when it came to the issue of marriage equality. Thorne-Begland, who is not married, but lives with his partner and their two children, was honorably discharged from the Navy 20 years ago after he came out publicly on Nightline as a protest against "don't ask, don't tell."

Republican Delegate Robert Marshall (who is running for U.S. Senate) also accused him of pushing an "aggressive activist homosexual agenda." According to The Washington Post's Laura Vozzella, Marshall claims that Thorne-Begland "holds himself out as being married," which makes his "life a contradiction to the requirement of submission to the constitution." According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, a Christian conservative group also sent an email blast to supporters saying Thorne-Begland was unfit to serve because of his support for gay marriage, which is not legal in Virginia.

Despite heartfelt support from both Democrats and Republicans politicians, including Governor Bob McDonnell, the opposition against Thorne-Begland was too strong. His current boss, Commonwealth's Attorney Michael Herring, called the vote an "embarrassment" and said, "It's hard to think about what happened in the General Assembly and not conclude that it's a form of bigotry."

Judge Rules Against Ex-Wife

Gary Coleman

Former child star Gary Coleman's ex-wife failed to prove she had lived with him as a common law spouse even after their divorce, a Utah judge has ruled, in a move that could strip her of rights to the "Diff'rent Strokes" actor's estate.

At issue now is which of Coleman's multiple wills should govern the distribution of assets, and a ruling designating Price as his common law wife would have boosted her claim to his estate, including rights to his cremated remains and the use of the star's name.

A handwritten amendment to Coleman's will drafted in 2007 named Price as his sole heir. The document said it replaced a 2005 will that named Coleman's friend Anna Gray, the chief of his corporation, as the estate's executor and only beneficiary.

Gray, who represented herself during a two-day bench trial, claimed Price's claim to the estate was voided by the couple's divorce. Gray welcomed the ruling, saying she believes it clears the way for a ruling that formally awards her Coleman's estate.

A "Homosexual Ephebophile"

Philly

Documents from a clergy-abuse trial show Catholic church officials ignored complaints a Philadelphia priest had molested two boys until they heard he was also running a travel business - and competing with a big donor.

The documents involving defrocked priest Michael McCarthy come as the prosecution details how the archdiocese handled abuse complaints against about 20 priests. They were never charged with crimes because authorities didn't know about the complaints - kept in secret, locked archives at the archdiocese - for years.

Monsignor William Lynn is on trial, charged with child endangerment and conspiracy for allegedly helping the church hide hundreds of abuse complaints as secretary for clergy. Lynn has pleaded not guilty.

The accuser told the archdiocese in 1991 that McCarthy - who spent 20 years at Cardinal O'Hara High School - had plied him with liquor, removed his underwear while wrestling and fondled him in bed. He feared retribution for the complaint.

And priests were complaining about McCarthy's temperament, and about sexually-charged speech, underwear catalogs that came in the mail and gay pornography found in his bedroom. While McCarthy was away, a raid of sorts turned up pornography and a homoerotic poster on his wall.

McCarthy was sent for a psychiatric evaluation, and deemed a "homosexual ephebophile," someone attracted to adolescent boys. He was put on a "health leave," where he remained until he was defrocked in 2006. He spent some of that time working the graveyard shift as a cashier at an Atlantic City casino, according to one letter he sent Bevilacqua.

More Sex Charges

Legion of Christ

A prominent American priest in the Legionaries of Christ, a troubled Catholic order whose founder was denounced by the Vatican for sexual improprieties, has admitted having a sexual relationship with a woman and fathering her child.

Father Thomas Williams, who has appeared on CBS and NBC and was interviewed by ABC News for a 2010 report on the Legion, made the acknowledgement after an activist who had sought reform in the order contacted the Vatican with his suspicions.

According to the National Catholic Reporter, the Legion has confirmed that seven other priests are now being investigated for the alleged abuse of minors. The Legion has more than 800 priests.

The Legion of Christ was founded by Mexican priest Marcial Maciel in 1941, who built it into a powerful international order with 70,000 followers and many wealthy benefactors. Maciel, however, was accused of sexual abuse, drug abuse and of fathering multiple children with women in Europe and Mexico. In 2006, Pope Benedict banned Maciel from active ministry after 20 men testified that he had molested them when they were teens.

After Maciel's death in 2008, the Legion issued a public statement acknowledging "reprehensible actions" by its founder. The Vatican began investigating the Legion's finances. In 2010, the Vatican denounced Maciel and appointed an outsider to oversee the Legion and manage its reform. The Vatican said Maciel had committed "objectively immoral acts," committed "true crimes," and lived a "life without scruples or authentic religious sentiment."

Backed By Big Bucks

Michelle Rhee

During her tumultuous three years at the head of the Washington D.C. public schools, Michelle Rhee set off a lot of fireworks. She's still doing it - on a national stage.

Rhee has emerged as the leader of an unlikely coalition of politicians, philanthropists, financiers and entrepreneurs who believe the nation's $500 billion-a-year public education system needs a massive overhaul. She has vowed to raise $1 billion for her national advocacy group, StudentsFirst, and forever break the hold of teachers unions on education policy.

StudentsFirst has its own political action committee (PAC), its own SuperPAC, and a staff of 75, including a cadre of seasoned lobbyists Rhee sends from state to state as political battles heat up. She has flooded the airwaves with TV and radio ads in a half dozen states weighing new policies on charter schools, teacher assessment and other hot-button issues.

But critics say Rhee risks destroying the very public schools she aims to save by forging alliances with political conservatives, evangelical groups and business interests that favor turning a large chunk of public education over to the private sector. She won't disclose her donors, but public records indicate that they include billionaire financiers and wealthy foundations.

Balding Disease

Australia's Wombats

A mystery liver disease thought to be caused by introduced weeds is causing hairy-nosed wombats in southern Australia to go bald and die, researchers said Tuesday.

The illness, which causes the wombat to lose some or all of its fur and then starve to death, is tearing through South Australia's native southern hairy-nosed wombats, threatening entire populations.

Peter Clements from the state's Natural History Society said wildlife rescue workers had discovered "several hundred" sickened animals in the Murraylands region near Adelaide, where up to 85 percent of the population was unwell.

Initially the animals were thought to have mange, but it became so widespread and severe -- with shiny, healthy skin revealed beneath -- that autopsies were carried out to determine what was causing the illness.

University of Adelaide researcher Wayne Boardman said the non-native toxic potato weed appeared to be affecting the wombats' livers, triggering a reaction with ultraviolet light that caused them to lose their fur.

In Memory

Carlos Fuentes

Author Carlos Fuentes, who played a dominant role in Latin America's novel-writing boom by delving into the failed ideals of the Mexican revolution, died Tuesday in a Mexico City hospital. He was 83.

Mexican media reported Fuentes died at the Angeles del Pedregal hospital, where he was being treated for heart problems. The loss was immediately mourned worldwide via Twitter and across Mexican airwaves.

The prolific Fuentes wrote his first novel, "Where the Air is Clear," at age 29, laying the foundation for a boom in Spanish contemporary literature during the 1960s and 1970s. He published an essay on the change of power in France in the newspaper Reforma on Tuesday, the same day he died.

His generation of writers, including Colombia's Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Peru's Mario Vargas Llosa, drew global readership and attention to Latin American culture during a period when strongmen ruled much of the region.

"The Death of Artemio Cruz," a novel about a post-revolutionary Mexico that failed to keep its promise of narrowing social gaps, brought Fuentes international notoriety.

The elegant, mustachioed author's other contemporary classics included "Aura," ''Terra Nostra," and "The Good Conscience." Many American readers know him for "The Old Gringo," a novel about San Francisco journalist Ambrose Bierce, who disappeared at the height of the 1910-1920 Mexican Revolution. That book was later made into a film starring Gregory Peck and Jane Fonda.

Fuentes was often mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel prize but never won one. A busy man, Fuentes wrote plays and short stories and co-founded a literary magazine. He was also a columnist, political analyst, essayist and critic.

And he was outspoken. Once considered a Communist and sympathizer of Cuba's Fidel Castro, Fuentes was denied entry into the U.S. under the McCarren-Walter Act.

More recently, as a moderate leftist, Fuentes strongly opposed harsh policies against immigration and the war on terrorism in the U.S, though he expressed deep affection for the United States. He warned about Mexico's religious right but also blasted Venezuela's Hugo Chavez as a "Tropical Mussolini."

Described by Mexican cultural officials as the country's most distinguished living author, Fuentes in 1987 won the Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's highest literary honor.

Fuentes also was named a commander of the National Order of Merit, France's highest civilian award given to a foreigner, in 1997. Spain gave him a Prince of Asturias Award for literature in 1994.

Throughout his life, Fuentes also taught courses at Harvard, Princeton, Columbia and Brown universities in the United States.

The son of a career diplomat, Fuentes himself served as an ambassador to England. He resigned from Mexico's foreign service in protest over Mexico's 1968 student massacre, but returned to serve as ambassador to Paris beginning in 1975.

Fuentes resigned from the foreign service again in 1977 when former President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz was appointed ambassador to Spain, saying he wouldn't serve with the man who ordered the student massacre in Mexico City, which activists said killed up to 350 people.

A believer that literature allowed him to say what would be censored otherwise, Fuentes also was the subject of censorship.

His mystery novel "Aura," which narrates a romantic encounter beneath a crucifix with a black Christ that some officials claimed was too racy, was banned from public high schools in Puerto Rico. It also sparked controversy in Mexico in 2001 when a former interior secretary asked the novel to be dropped from a suggested reading list at his daughter's private junior high school.

Fuentes was born in Panama City on Dec. 11, 1928 to Mexican parents. He lived most of his life abroad, growing up in Montevideo, Uruguay; Rio de Janeiro; Washington, D.C.; Santiago, Chile; and Buenos Aires, Argentina. He later divided his time between homes in Mexico City home and London, where he did most of his writing.

Fuentes was married from 1959 to 1973 to actress Rita Macedo, with whom he had his only surviving daughter.

After the couple divorced, Fuentes married journalist Silvia Lemus and they had two children together. Their son Carlos Fuentes Lemus died from complications associated with hemophilia in 1999, and Natasha Fuentes Lemus died in 2005 after a cardiac arrest.

Fuentes also acknowledged having affairs with actresses including Jeanne Moreau and Jean Seberg.

Fuentes said in 2008 that he agreed with Mario Vargas Llosa to gather 12 writers, including Garcia Marquez, to each create a piece about their favorite dictator.

Fuentes wrote an opera inspired by Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the five-time president of Mexico during the Texas Revolution.

He said he wanted to see the man he considered the most flamboyant character in Mexican political history dancing and singing with his wooden leg.
