M Is FOR MASHUP - April 20th, 2011

UK 80s MASHED & MASHED GREAT!

By DJ Useo

Do you know what a mashup is? It's at least two unrelated songs that have been mixed together so they sound like one song. For instance, on the new mashup compilation from the SOUND-UNSOUND bootleg forum ( sound-unsound.com/ ), there's a mashup by talented French mixer, Chocomang. The mashup is the music from the Cult's 'Sanctuary' with vocals from Kesha's 'We R Who We R'. Heard in Chocomang's mashup are also selected vocals from the Black Eyed Peas, the Police, & even a dash of Adam Ant to spice up the pacing. I'm sure there're a few more musical bits added but all these aforementioned parts are joined by Chocomang using mixing software until the resulting musical blend yields an astonishingly-appealing final track. If this kind of thing I've described sounds interesting to you, then you'll find the entire UK 80s MASHED compilation a satisfying & memorable experience.

As one of the dual super moderators at SOUND-UNSOUND forum ( sound-unsound.com/ ) , along with the pop genius mARKYbOY, I had the honor of over-seeing this new collection. In fact, since the SUS releases before this had the themes chosen by other moderators, it was my turn this time & I was mighty gratified the others agreed to my UK 80s MASHED theme. Who would've thought we would release it the week of the Royal Wedding? Not bad timing-wise,eh? If only one of us mixers had done a track with the Royal theme.'Da dada de dada da da'. Wouldn't that sound that great with Adele singing over it? (lol)

The final collection turned out to be two discs, with some mixers turning in multiple tracks. G4Gorilla ( www.g4gorilla.blogspot.com/ ) outdid himself with what I regard as a record for a mashup comp- - - five killer tracks. Initial feedback from the mashup communnity found big favour with G4Gorilla's 'Oscillating Monster', which, to me, is the best mashup of Lady Gaga's 'Monster' I've heard. Surely the fact that the music in the track is from the Smiths raises the likeability factor to eleven. (Spinal Tap joke) Chocomang himself also turned in an amazing four tracks. So far, two of those tracks have achieved transition into video form. Don't miss them as they are the pinnacle of mashup videos. Find them at Chocomang's site - ( chocomang.org/ )

So if you want to hear new mixes pitting some of the best UK 80s artists like Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Tears For Fears, Judas Priest, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel & many more vs modern music from folks like Gnarls Barkley, Kelly Clarkson, Richard Cheese, Bruno Mars, Avril Lavigne, etc.,& you want them mixed by super mashers like DJ MXR, Guv'nor, Tweylo, Digitalldj, DJ Petrushka, & more, then this is the run-on sentence, I mean, mashup collection for you. It comes in 160 & 296 kbps complete files, & also in individual tracks that you can listen to before d/l-ing. Be sure & check out the attached artwork to the mp3's when you play them. There's special covers on them just for visual enjoyment. I mean, why should your ears get all the fun? (Why didn't we make a braille version just for touch stimulation? We'll have to get right on that for the next album.) Find the album here -
( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2011/04/all-new-sound-unsounds-uk-80s-mashed.html )

Next week you won't believe it, but there's an astonishing new mashup compilation being released.& it has tracks by me onnit, lol! Meet me back here in a week & bring lots of bandwidth. ;)

Mix Of The Week

STAR SLINGER's 'FABRIC MIX - APRIL 2011' is an hour & 8 minutes of tunes by THREE 6 MAFIA, JAMIE XX , GUCCI MANE, & more. STAR SLINGER made this gem up for an upcoming gig at Fabric (the legendary nightclub). Check it out for listening or download here -

Mashup Tip : Don't mash the Family Guy into your track. It might seem like a good idea, but it's only because you're high as a kite.

… the rationale for the progressive income tax - and for taxing the dividends and interest that wealth generates - is not that the best-off have "acquired too much." Rather, it's that they are best able to afford the sacrifice. We can applaud the billionaire's wealth as well-earned and the outsized contribution he makes, through his taxes, to the common good.

For his fans, the man called Moebius could never live up to the mystery conjured up by that name. Like Houdini or Hendrix, Fellini or Frazetta, the 72-year-old French artist's name has become supercharged by the unreal, which made it disconcerting to see him sipping from a beige coffee cup in a hotel room near the Burbank Airport while a maid attempted to lug her vacuum cleaner through the doorway.

"The Use and Abuse of Literature" by Marjorie Garber: A review by Todd Gitlin
In a time when reading has devolved into a means for the efficient conveyance of information, and sustained reading is in decline even as the techniques for distributing "text" multiply by the hour, lovers of literature insist, or pray, that their stock-in-trade not be dehydrated, shrink-wrapped, freeze-dried, shaken down, translated, or otherwise reduced to shadows of grander somethings -- ideologies, deep structures of consciousness, hard-wired linguistic capacities, or some other fundamentals. If literature were a person, she would be freaking out.

Trivia Question of the Day

"Hogan's Heroes" was a hit in syndication in Germany, but some liberties had to be taken. It's illegal to say "Heil Hitler" (and also considered to be in bad taste), so when the German soldiers gave the party salute, what did the characters say?

Canada eyes nuke waste dump near Lake Huron

Proposal to house contaminants worries U.S. officials, residents

Canadian energy companies are considering a proposal that would place an underground nuclear waste storage facility near the shore of Lake Huron - a move that is causing growing concern among U.S. conservationists.
(Ya think?)

Ontario Power Generation owns a nuclear plant located between Kincardine and Saugeen Shores, Ontario. That's roughly 55 miles across the water from Port Hope in Huron County. Ontario Power and other Canadian industry officials under the Nuclear Waste Management Organization are eyeing the site as a possible permanent home for Canada's low- to mid-level nuclear waste.

Being Moved To Leavenworth

Bradley Manning

A Pentagon official says the Army private suspected of giving classified data to WikiLeaks is being moved to a state-of-the-art facility at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. But the Pentagon's general counsel says this does not suggest that the soldier's treatment of the soldier at the Marine Corps base at Quantico, Va., was inappropriate.

Jeh Johnson said Tuesday that Army Pfc. Bradley Manning will be moved in the very near future to the medium security facility at Leavenworth. He says Manning can be moved now because his interview in the Washington region to determine his competency to stand trial has been completed.

Johnson said the move was in Manning's best interest because Leavenworth's Joint Regional Correctional Facility has a broader array of facilities, including mental, emotional and physical health staff.

There are currently three detention facilities at Fort Leavenworth, including the military's maximum security prison. The new 464-bed facility, which opened in September, is a regional prison that combined the operations of several military prisons around the country.

Tours Philly Shelter For Homeless Youth

Jon Bon Jovi

Rocker Jon Bon Jovi may no longer own a sports team in Philadelphia, but he still keeps the city close to his soul.

Bon Jovi returned to Philadelphia on Tuesday to lend his star power to the opening of a new homeless shelter for teens and young adults.

The New Jersey native is a longtime advocate for homeless causes in Philadelphia, Newark, N.J., New Orleans and other cities.

Allowing young people to fall through society's cracks "denies all of us their talents and visions," Bon Jovi told a small crowd at the opening of the Covenant House shelter in the gritty Kensington neighborhood.

Hollywood Bookkeeping

"Happy Days"

Actors from the TV comedy "Happy Days" filed a $10 million lawsuit against CBS and Paramount on Tuesday over profits from merchandising on everything from casino slot machines to T-shirts.

Anson Williams, Marion Ross, Don Most and Erin Moran -- who all appeared on the 1974-1984 show -- and Patricia Bosley, the widow of actor Tom Bosley, filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles, charging fraud and breach of contract.

Stars Henry Winkler (the Fonz) and Ron Howard, who played wholesome 1950s teen Richie Cunningham, are not part of the legal action.

Attorney Jon Pfeiffer said that except for a payment to Moran of over $600 made more than 10 years ago, the other actors claim they have not received any share of CBS profits from merchandising deals.

The actors signed contracts entitling them to between 2.5 percent and 5 percent of net proceeds from merchandise with their image on it, according to the lawsuit.

Pulling Ads From ABC

Hoover

A Hoover executive who says his wife and mother are big fans of two soap operas canceled by ABC says he is yanking the vacuum-makers' ads from the network in protest.

Hoover's vice president of marketing, Brian Kirkendall, announced on the company's Facebook page that the ads will be lifted Friday, if not sooner. The number of people who said they "liked" Hoover on Facebook has jumped from around 7,000 to more than 11,000 people since the message was posted.

ABC said last week it was canceling "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," leaving "General Hospital" as its only soap. ABC had no comment Tuesday on Hoover's action.

Kirkendall did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment. He wrote that Hoover is also setting up an email address for fans of the show to voice their displeasure.

Quits Disney TV Show

Demi Lovato

Teen star Demi Lovato is leaving her Disney Channel hit show "Sonny With a Chance", saying that returning after treatment for bulimia and cutting herself would not be healthy for her recovery.

Lovato, 18, who already has two hit albums, told People magazine she would focus on her music in the future.

Lovato played a Wisconsin teen in "Sonny With a Chance" who lands a main role on her favorite TV show. The Disney Channel series debuted in 2009, and helped make Lovato one of the family friendly cable network's biggest international teen stars.

But she abruptly quit a concert tour with the Jonas Brothers last November and entered a three-month treatment program for emotional and physical issues.

Wah. Wah. Wah.

"Glee"

The fallout from a "Glee" extra's revelation of key plot developments via Twitter could impact the way some TV contracts are drafted.

Nicole Crowther, a day player on the hit Fox musical, came under fire this week for sharing the names of the prom king and queen in an upcoming episode. In response, Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk quickly took to Twitter to slam Crowther, writing "hope you're qualified to do something besides work in entertainment ... Who are you to spoil something talented people have spent months to create?"

But according to a source close to the show, the standard SAG day-player union contracts "Glee" uses don't contain "NDA" (non-disclosure agreement) language providing for punishment when plot secrets are revealed. So while the studio and network might never hire a leaking extra again, the legal ramifications of spilling secrets are probably less serious.

An insider at "Glee" producer 20th Century Fox Television said the studio is considering amending all of its talent deals -- from series regulars to day players like Crowther -- to include strict punishments for blabbing online.

Disney's ESPN network on Tuesday yanked its poker-related ads and programing as federal agents continued to investigate money laundering and fraud charges against online gambling sites that sponsor the network.

"For the immediate future, we are making efforts to remove related advertising and programing pending further review," ESPN said in a statement.

According to the criminal complaint, the sites PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker allegedly lied to banks about financial transactions that involved setting up phony corporations and websites to launder money the poker site operators received.

ESPN said it decided to pull the plug on poker-ads and programing after learning about the indictments. The network added it does not plan to cancel the broadcast of the annual World Series of Poker Tournament, which begins next month.

Judge Rules

'The Chronic'

The new incarnation of Death Row Records does not have the rights to sell Dr. Dre's iconic rap album "The Chronic" digitally, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder ruling states that the rapper and producer has received far less money than he is due from online sales of the 1992 album, which also helped launch the career of Snoop Dogg.

The ruling does not call for a halt of digital sales of Dre's music, but entitles him to receive 100 percent of the proceeds of online sales, his attorney, Howard King, told The Associated Press.

Snyder's ruling states the label, which bought the original Death Row Records' holdings out of bankruptcy, does not have the right to put Dr. Dre's music on compilation or any other albums.

NYC Assault Charge

Paz de la Huerta

Prosecutors say TV actress Paz de la Huerta derided a former reality TV figure as a "fake actress" after attacking her in a posh New York City hotel bar.

The "Boardwalk Empire" actress was arraigned Tuesday on assault and other charges in her March 20 encounter with Samantha Swetra.

A court complaint says de la Huerta punched Swetra in the face and threw a glass that cut Swetra's leg.

Manhattan prosecutors say de la Huerta then told police she herself was "a real actress," but Swetra was a fake and "a publicity seeker."

Settles Lawsuit Over Heal the World

Jackson Estate

Michael Jackson's estate reached a settlement Tuesday that ended its lengthy fight with a nonprofit that claimed it was the successor to the singer's Heal the World charity.

The deal came just as a trial was set to begin to decide ownership of lucrative trademarks.

The singer's estate battled the Heal the World Foundation in federal court for more than 18 months, alleging it was misusing trademarks and likeness rights to create an association with Jackson's defunct charity.

The new incarnation of Heal the World Foundation had said it was given authority by Jackson's attorney to run the foundation in 2005. In recent months, it placed Jackson's mother, Katherine, on its board of directors and also collaborated with the late singer's children.

In a statement, Jackson's estate said the settlement calls for it to retain the rights to the Heal the World charity and rights to any trademarks the current foundation held.

Toxin Killing Dolphins, Seals

SoCal

Dolphins and sea lions that have died along the Southern California coast in recent weeks may be victims of a deadly neurotoxin produced by a seasonal algae bloom, experts said Tuesday.

The same poison was found in samples from millions of fish that suffocated in a Redondo Beach harbor last month, and researchers hope to determine if it is present in samples from a similar but smaller fish die-off Monday in Ventura Harbor.

In the past few days, three sea lions and three dolphins that beached themselves in Orange County died or were destroyed because they had incurable domoic acid poisoning, said Kirsten Sedlick, animal care supervisor for the Pacific Mammal Center in Laguna Beach.

On Tuesday, the center dispatched crews to rescue another four dolphins and a sea lion, she said. Tests will determine whether they also were victims of the neurotoxin.

Shows Must Go On

Bertrand Cantat

Three plays by Sophocles will go on in Canada but without the casting of a French rock star convicted of killing his girlfriend, director Wajdi Mouawad said Monday following a public outcry.

But Mouawad said he will incorporate in the scripts the behind-the-scenes fracas that led to rocker Bertrand Cantat's dismissal.

Theatre du Nouveau Monde had invited Cantat to appear in three plays in its 2011-2012 season.

But Montreal's largest theatre company was forced to reconsider its plans after a public outcry that included a government minister vowing in the middle of an election campaign to refuse him entry into Canada if her party is reelected.

First Pitch In Philly

PhillieBot

PhillieBot for Cy Young? It's unlikely.

But the one-armed, three-wheeled robot, designed by engineers at the University of Pennsylvania, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Wednesday's game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers as part of Science Day festivities at Citizens Bank Park, said Evan Lerner, a spokesman for Penn's engineering school.

The pitching robot has been in the makings for a month and a half as Penn engineers Jordan Brindza and Jamie Gewirtz assembled parts and wrote software in their spare time, Lerner said.

They started with a Segway, gave it a robotic arm and added a third wheel. They also gave it a pneumatic cylinder, which delivers a burst of compressed carbon dioxide to power the pitch. The robot's computer brain can be tweaked to change pitch velocity and trajectory.

On Monday, Brindza and Gewirtz took PhillieBot out to the mound for its final test, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. After the press of a button, the robot's mechanical arm reared back and then moved toward home plate; at the top of its delivery, it flicked its mechanical "wrist" and shot the ball forward.

Mary Robbins

Actor-director Tim Robbins' mother, musician Mary Robbins, has died. She was 78.

Robbins' father, Gil Robbins, died earlier this month.

Robbins says his mother died Sunday of a heart arrhythmia, just 12 days after her husband of nearly 59 years passed away. She died at the couple's home in Esteban Cantu, Mexico.

Mary Robbins studied music at the University of California, Los Angeles, and performed professionally in the 1950s.

She successfully battled colon cancer through nutrition and alternative medicine, eventually earning a bachelor's degree in holistic nutrition. She volunteered her services at a clinic near the couple's Mexico home.

She is survived by four children and four grandchildren.

Grete Waitz

Grete Waitz had never run a marathon before the New York City race in October 1978. After it, her name and New York would be forever linked.

The lean Norwegian middle-distance runner, who had set two world-records in the 3,000 meters, was invited to the race as a "rabbit," someone brought in to set a fast early pace for the favorite runners.

Two-thirds through that first marathon, she suffered so hard that she cursed her husband, Jack Waitz, for talking her into it.

But in all that rage she found strength. Not only did she win the race, she set a world record - the first of three. And "never again" turned into eight more wins in the New York Marathon, a world championship gold medal, an Olympic silver and a place among the greatest marathon runners of all time.

Waitz died Tuesday at age 57 in a hospital in her native Oslo after a six-year battle with cancer. Her husband Jack was by her side, said Helle Aanesen, who co-founded a cancer foundation with Waitz. There was no word on what type of cancer felled the marathon legend, who disclosed no details about her condition after being diagnosed in 2005.

Setting a world record in her first marathon was revealing of Waitz's character. She always pushed boundaries for herself. And in doing so, she broke barriers for women in sports - perhaps more than she ever imagined.

At a time when many still felt that women didn't belong in long-distance running, Waitz proved them wrong with her outstanding performances.

She won the London Marathon twice, in 1983 and '86, the Stockholm Marathon in 1988 and earned five titles at the world cross-country championships from 1978-81 and 1983. Her last victory in the New York Marathon came in 1988.

Before becoming the world's top women's marathoner, Waitz competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics in the 1,500 meters, set world records for the 3,000 in 1975 and 1976, and was unbeaten in cross-country races for 12 years.

Born in Oslo as Grete Andersen on Oct. 1, 1953, she started running track at an early age, winning both junior and senior titles in Norway for middle distances.

She met her future husband, Jack Waitz, while training at the Norwegian sports club Vidar. They married in 1975 and he became her coach. Until the early '80s, Waitz also worked as a teacher as she was developing her running.

Waitz is survived by her husband and her two brothers, Jan and Arild. A private funeral ceremony is planned for next week, according to Waitz's wishes, Aanesen said.

Sol Saks

Sol Saks, a comedy writer who created the classic sitcom "Bewitched," died in Los Angeles on April 16, a publicist said Tuesday. He was 100.

Saks wrote just one episode of the sitcom, the pilot episode titled, "I, Darrin, Take This Witch, Samantha." The show, which starred Elizabeth Montgomery as the beautiful nose-twitching witch, ran from 1964 to 1972.

According to harpiesbizarre.com, Saks drew inspiration for the story about a witch who weds a mortal from two films: "I Married a Witch" (1942), starring Fredric March and Veronica Lake, and "Bell Book and Candle" (1958), with James Stewart and Kim Novak.

Saks, discussing the similarities of the Bewitched storyline with the two movies in a 1999 episode of E! True Hollywood Story, said he didn't have to worry about being sued because Columbia Pictures owned both of the movies as well as the Screen Gems television division that made "Bewitched."

Before that sitcom, Saks wrote for such radio comedies as the long-running "Duffy's Tavern" and for early television series including "My Favorite Husband," "Mr. Adams and Eve," and "I Married Joan."

The New York native also wrote the screenplay for the film comedy "Walk Don't Run" (1966), starring Cary Grant; served for a short time as a CBS executive in comedy development; and wrote the 1985 book "The Craft of Comedy Writing."

Tucker made more than 70 records in all, including several million-selling hits.

After appearing in the 1975 TV movie "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom," Tucker turned a leased skating rink into the real Stardust, offering ballroom dancing and renting out the space for other functions.

He closed the ballroom in 1982 but continued to perform into the 1990s.
