Purple Gene Reviews

'The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada'

Purple Gene's review of the movie "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" (2005)    [view trailer]
Directed by Tommy Lee Jones (first time):

Now that the 2005 Oscars are history and Jon Stewart has passed the freshman test as host, I went to see a movie that had no nominations for anything in the 2005 Academy Awards…..Yet its first time director and lead actor, Tommy Lee Jones, had won the Cannes film festival. I think there had been talk that Tommy Lee Jones might pull an "Unforgiven" (1992) like Clint Eastwood and win the dual award (at the Golden Globes). No Dice ! 2005 was the year of the cowboy…but not the kind Tommy Lee Jones was playing!

"The Three Burials of Melqiuades Estrada" is a Homily to Honor…… A Paean to a promise kept to a partner……and really, a deliberate dirge to doing justice……border style.

Pete Perkins (Tommy Lee Jones - "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980) - "Cobb" (1994) - "Men in Black" (1997) - "The Missing" (2003) runs a small cattle operation outside a small Texas Border Town. He meets a wrangler from Mexico named Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedillo - "Holy Tortilla (1998) - "Two for Texas" (1998) - "Bordertown" (2006) and likes him a lot and decides to hire him on as a hand. Melquiades is very nervous about his status as an undocumented alien and tells Pete, "If I die up here, I want you to bury me back in Mexico where my family lives!" He shows Pete a picture of his wife and 3 kids and draws a little map. Pete shakes hands and says, Hell, I'll damn sure die before you do….but it's a deal!"

At the same time, Mike Norton (Barry Pepper - "Sliders" (1995) - "61*" (2001) - "3: The Dale Earnhardt Story" (2004) and his new wife Lou Ann (January Jones - "Bandits" (2001) - "Love Actually" (2003) - "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" (2004) move into a used trailer having just arrived from Cincinnati for his new job as a Border Patrolman. He is a violent Perv who likes to smack Mexicans around and then come home and Poke his bored wife while she washes dishes…literally.

One day Mike is out alone in his truck jerking off to a Hustler Mag when he hears a couple of shots. Pulling his pants up, he grabs his rifle and hikes up to the ridge, He sees Melquiades with a gun and shoots him twice and kills him. When he realizes that the Mexican was shooting at a Coyote and not him, he decides to hide him in the ground…this is the first burial.

Belmont (Dwight Yoakum - "Red Rock West" (1992) - "Sling Blade" (1996) - "Panic Room" (2002) who is the local Sheriff, finds out about the dead body and without even identifying him, he has Melquiades placed in an anonymous grave. This is the second burial.

Pete finds the 2 bullet casings that killed his friend and from information he gets out of a local married waitress that he'd been partying with, traces the shooter to Mike Norton. Of course when he confronts the Sheriff, he gets the big FU. Well Pete is a loyal kinda guy and breaks into Mike trailer, ties up his wife and kidnaps the Perp. Pete makes Mike dig up the dead body and wrap it in blankets…throw it over a pack mule..and on horseback the three head over the border to perform the third burial.

What ensues is a torturous and tedious journey with Mike having to drag a dead body preserved with antifreeze for mile after desolate mile…through canyons, cliffs, dry lakes, rivers, a blind old man's isolated ranch (Levon Helm) and finally to the place that looks like where the map leads. But everything is different than Melquiades described….wife, kids and hacienda…nothing quite matches what Pete was told. But Pete promised…so he drags Mike out to an abandoned oasis, puts Melqiades's picture in a tree and forces him to perform the third burial. His promise is kept and Mike has been redeemed…ride off into the sunset.

Purple Gene gives "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" 8 strong shots of Tequila out of 10 for being a rewarding trip through a desolate part of the world.

Author Admits Inflating 'Da Vinci' Claims

Michael Baigent

An author who is suing the publishers of the best-selling thriller "The Da Vinci Code" admitted in court Tuesday to exaggerating his claims that the novel borrowed from his own work.

Authors Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh contend parts of their 1982 nonfiction book "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail," formed the basis of Dan Brown's novel, which has sold more than 40 million copies and has been made into a film starring Tom Hanks.

James Baldwin, a lawyer for Random House, publisher of "The Da Vinci Code," asked Baigent on Tuesday about claims in his witness statement that 15 points central to the plot of Brown's book were taken from the earlier book.

The day's proceedings were punctuated with long silences as Baigent peered over his black-rimmed glasses at the lawyers, before he conceded that many of his claims may have been incorrect.

Reteaming With Conan

Andy Richter

Conan O'Brien and his former sidekick on NBC's "Late Night," Andy Richter, are reuniting for NBC primetime, and this time Richter is the leading man.

The network has ordered "Andy Barker P.I.," a detective comedy pilot starring Richter, which O'Brien co-wrote and is executive producing.

Richter plays the title character, an accountant who sets up a business in an office formerly belonging to a private investigator. As he starts panicking that no clients are coming in, people looking for the office's previous occupant begin to give him detective cases that he somewhat reluctantly takes on.

2006 Playboy Jazz Fest

Hugh Hefner

As a boy growing up in Chicago, Hugh Hefner says he fell in love early - and it wasn't with women.

Well, actually, it was with women. But the founding editor of Playboy magazine also fell in love early with jazz, and both affairs have lasted a lifetime.

Hefner did what he could to stay in the background while others announced a lineup of stars for the June 17-18 event at the Hollywood Bowl that is to include George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Chuck Mangione, Elvis Costello, Kevin Eubanks, Allen Toussaint, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and numerous others. Then, after a brief photo op with some of the performers, he tried to slip hurriedly back into his lavish Playboy Mansion, the turreted stone edifice that visitors who arrive by car are advised to approach slowly as a sign warns them "Playmates at Play."

Commercial Music

Kinks

Sixteen years after they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and 23 years after their last top 10 hit ("Come Dancing"), the Kinks are in the spotlight again -- thanks to a number of TV spots that feature their distinctive pop music.

A couple of weeks ago, the British band's top 10 hit from 1964, "All Day and All of the Night," helped launch a new Tide campaign. In the coming weeks, the group's "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" and "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy" will be heard in spots for IBM and Abbott Labs, respectively.

Additional licensing opportunities for the Kinks' music are in the works, says Kenny Ochoa, VP of film/TV licensing at Sanctuary Records Group, which represents the group.

Foreign Visitors Returning

Broadway

Foreign visitors are coming back to Broadway in numbers nearing the pre-Sept. 11 mark.

During the 2004-2005 season, international visitors topped 1.3 million, the best figure since the 1999-2000 season, which welcomed 1.32 million visitors, according to figures released Monday by the League of American Theatres and Producers as part of its annual report on the demographics of the Broadway audience.

More New Yorkers are going to the theater, too, with 2.05 million attending Broadway during the 2004-2005 season, up from 1.94 million for the previous year. Domestic tourists slipped a bit, down to 5.7 million from 5.8 million in the 2003-2004 season.

Alleged Domestic Dispute

Yanni

The musician Yanni was arrested at his home after an alleged domestic dispute with his girlfriend, authorities said.

Yanni, whose legal name is John Yanni Christopher, was arrested early Friday and faces a domestic battery charge, according to a police report.

Yanni asked his girlfriend, Silvia Barthes, to leave his beachfront home in Manalapan on Thursday night, the police report said. Barthes, 33, told police she attempted to pack her clothing but the 51-year-old musician threw it on the ground.

She told officers he then grabbed her arms and shook her, throwing her on the bed, and jumped on top of her, according to the report.

Stork, an emergency room physician, chose Stone, an elementary school teacher, in the finale of ABC's "The Bachelor: Paris" last week.

The couple told The Tennessean in a joint interview Monday they are no longer a couple.

Asked if they might reconnect romantically after publicity has died down, both just laughed.

Arrested on 14-Year-Old Violations

Bobby Brown

Singer Bobby Brown has been arrested for minor motor-vehicle violations dating back 14 years.

The 37-year-old entertainer was in town Friday to watch his daughter in a high-school cheerleading tournament that night when a police officer conducted a warrant check. The check revealed the old misdemeanor charges of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and having an uninsured motor-vehicle trailer, according to Webster Police Chief Timothy J. Bent. He said a warrant check is "a common thing to do."

Brown was detained for about one hour, and was released on $40 bond.

Dead Still Being Found

New Orleans

Six months after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, bodies are still being pulled out of wrecked and rotting homes.

Firefighters in hard hats with cadaver dogs found the latest victim on Monday in a house that had been inspected months ago, though clearly not well enough.

It was the second corpse found since recovery efforts resumed last Friday, said Steve Glynn, chief of special operations for the New Orleans Fire Department.

The official door-to-door search of New Orleans ended October 3 with a death toll of 972. Since then, at least 131 more bodies have been found. Some by officials, some by horror-struck friends and family members, some even by insurance inspectors.

Dana Reeve

Dana Reeve, the singer-actress who married the strapping star of the "Superman" movies and then devoted herself to his care and his cause after he was paralyzed, has died of lung cancer, a year-and-a-half after her husband. She was 44.

Christopher and Dana Reeve married in 1992. Life changed drastically for the young show-business couple three years later when Christopher Reeve suffered near-total paralysis in a horse-riding accident and almost died.

After her husband's death in October 2004, Reeve said she planned to return to acting. She had appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway and regional stages and on the TV shows "Law & Order," "Oz," and "All My Children," and she'd had to give up a Broadway role when she was widowed.

However, her mother died of complications from ovarian cancer and her own diagnosis came the next summer.

Survivors include the Reeves' 13-year-old son, Will; two grown stepchildren, Matthew and Alexandra; her father, Charles Morosini; and two sisters.

Gordon Parks

Gordon Parks, who captured the struggles and triumphs of black America as a photographer for Life magazine and then became Hollywood's first major black director with "The Learning Tree" and the hit "Shaft," died Tuesday, a family member said. He was 93.

He covered everything from fashion to politics to sports during his 20 years at Life, from 1948 to 1968.

But as a photographer, he was perhaps best known for his gritty photo essays on the grinding effects of poverty in the United States and abroad and on the spirit of the civil rights movement.

"The Learning Tree" was Parks' first film, in 1969. It was based on his 1963 autobiographical novel of the same name, in which the young hero grapples with fear and racism as well as first love and schoolboy triumphs. Parks wrote the score as well directed.

In 1989, "The Learning Tree" was among the first 25 American movies to be placed on the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. The registry is intended to highlight films of particular cultural, historical or aesthetic importance.

Parks was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Fort Scott, Kan., the youngest of 15 children. In his 1990 autobiography, "Voices in the Mirror," he remembered it as a world of racism and poverty, but also a world where his parents gave their children love, discipline and religious faith.

In addition to novels, poetry and his autobiographical writings, Parks' writing credits included nonfiction such as "Camera Portraits: Techniques and Principles of Documentary Portraiture," 1948, and a 1971 book of essays called "Born Black."

Last month, health concerns had kept Parks from accepting the William Allen White Foundation National Citation in Kansas, but he said in a taped presentation that he still considered the state his home and wanted to be buried in Fort Scott.

William Herskovic

William Herskovic, who escaped from Auschwitz and helped inspire Belgium's resistance to the Nazis during World War II, has died at the age of 91.

Three months after being sent from Belgium to Auschwitz, Herskovic escaped by cutting through a chain-link fence with two other prisoners using a pair of wire cutters he had hidden. It was the first night of Hanukkah in 1942.

The three hopped a train to Breslau, Germany, but a local rabbi threw them out when they tried to tell him about the horrors at Auschwitz.

Before being sent to Auschwitz, Herskovic operated a photography studio in Antwerp. He returned to photography for at least a decade after the war, but no longer wanted to be an artist.

In Los Angeles, he bought Bel Air Camera in Westwood, which his family still owns.

Herskovic is survived by three daughters, two brothers, four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Chu Lin got sick at Burbank airport upon arriving on a flight from Phoenix, said his son, Mark Chu Lin. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, though the cause of death was still unknown, said his son.

Since the 1960s, Chu Lin had worked as an anchor and a television and radio reporter. He was one of the first Asian-American reporters to rise to network news when he worked for CBS News in the 1970s.

He had been working as a reporter for KTTV Fox 11 since 1995, according to a statement from the station.

Locally, he had also worked for KTLA-TV and for KFWB radio. He wrote columns and articles on Asian-American affairs for Asian Week, Rafu Shimpo, and the San Francisco Examiner.

A Violet Sabrewing Hummingbird (Campylopterus Hemileucurus) hovers while drinking from a flower at La Selva biological station in Sarapiqui, Costa Rica, January 13, 2006. Although they have brains about the size of a grain of rice, hummingbirds have superb memories when it comes to food, according to research on Monday.

Welcome !

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.
Make yourself home, take your shoes off...
Go ahead, scratch it if it itches.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican musicians?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?
This is your place.

(In other words, submissions are welcome.)
