Weekly Review

HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW

January 28, 2003

United Nations weapons inspectors presented their interim report on Iraq's compliance with Security Council resolution 1441. Hans Blix, one of the chief inspectors, complained that Iraq had failed to provide important information about its weapons programs.

Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said that his inspectors had found no evidence that Iraq has restarted its nuclear-weapons program.

"Is Iraq complying, yes or no? If the answer is only partially yes," said White House spokesman Ari Fleischer, "then the answer is no."

Bush Administration officials were very upset over France and Germany's latest statements condemning America's war plans and their continued unwillingness to support an American invasion of Iraq.

Secretary of State Colin Powell was said to be "incandescent" with rage at the new opposition, which took him by surprise and has purportedly undermined his position among President Bush's advisers.

Donald Rumsfeld, the secretary of defense, dismissed France and Germany, and said they were part of "old Europe." "We're nearing the end of the long road," Rumsfeld said.

Rumors were circulating among defense analysts that the Pentagon was preparing to use nuclear "bunker busters" in the invasion of Iraq.

resident Bush gave a speech touting his economic-stimulus package at a trucking company in St. Louis; behind him was a printed canvas backdrop of shipping boxes displaying large "Made in America" labels; before him was a stack of real boxes that were made in China -- though somebody, allegedly an "overzealous volunteer," had taped over all the "Made in China" labels.

resident Bush said that watching Saddam Hussein was like watching "a rerun of a bad movie."

Reporters asked the resident when he planned to attack Iraq. "I will let you know," he replied, "when the time has come."

Re: Wetten Dass?

I lived and attended university in Germany for six years. I spoke nothing but German for six years. So let me correct this reader comment:

" Das (one 's') is the neuter article 'the' or the neuter pronoun 'it'.

Dass (double 's') means 'that', as is Dass ist das Maedchen mit die goldene Haar. "

Actually, "das" also means "that," as in, "That's the girl with the golden hair." His German is incorrect; it should read "Das ist das Maedchen mit dem goldenen Haar."

"Dass," with ss (the ss is actually written as the symbol "ß") means "that" used to introduce a subordinate clause, as in "Wetten, dass er fuenf Wuerstchen in 30 Sekunden essen kann?" (I'll bet you that he can eat five sausages in 30 seconds).

"Wetten dass?" means roughly, "I'll bet you that...." as in "I'll bet you that he can eat five hot dogs in 30 seconds." I've seen the show, and that's pretty much the kind of stunts that they do, with people betting on whether or not the person accomplishes their chosen task.

Getting 'Yahoo'd'

Today when I loaded your page the loading bar only went halfway and stopped as it has lately. I went "fuck!!!!" and continued to go ahead and read what I could. While I was finding out who went to hell this week, the dreaded white "unable to locate server" page popped up. I hit my "back" button, and damn if it didn't return to your page and the loading bar completed it's path to the end. I'm thinking "cool" and continued my journey thru hell. I clicked on one of the links and when I returned the loading bar stopped halfway again and the page ended "prematurely". This has only happened to me with your page and just started lately so I don't think the problem is on my end, but then again it is the male who takes the blame in these situations.

Peace,
~~ Steve B

Thanks for the 'head's up', Steve. The last couple of weeks I've been having some interesting conversations with Yahoo, and I'm beginning to get the idea it may be time to look to house the site elsewhere. If I give up sleep altogether, might have it worked out sooner, rather than later.
However, sleep is currently my favorite 'drug', and there is one hell of a party this weekend that must be attended!
Regardless, there are changes a-foot - and as that 'other' Martha would say - "And that's a good thing."

Deny Special Handling of 'Idol' Contestant

Marines

The United States Marine Corps on Monday denied it that it had kept an enlisted Marine from being sent to the Middle East so that he could sing on the hit Fox reality show "American Idol."

Lance Cpl. Joshua Gracin, appearing in baggy jeans and a sweater, wowed the judges on last Wednesday's episode of "Idol" with a crisp salute and a strong performance. He is set to appear on this Wednesday's episode in which the 32 semi-finalists will be chosen.

In a statement, the Marine Corps said Gracin's unit was scheduled to remain at Camp Pendleton near San Diego and had not been set to go to the Middle East as part of a military buildup ahead of a possible U.S. war with Iraq.

"The Marine Corps sees the recruiting value of Gracin's appearance before a national audience, appreciates the level of talent the Marine possesses, and recognizes the benefits of allowing him to continue competing on the program," Camp Pendleton said in a statement on Monday.

A spokeswoman in the public affairs office at Camp Pendleton declined to say how many Marines from the base had been deployed to the Middle East, saying that figure had not been made public. She said the base has 32,000 military personnel in total.

Honored in Ireland

John Huston

A university in Ireland has announced plans to name a film school after the late Hollywood screen director John Huston in tribute to his close links with the country.

The National University of Ireland in Galway said the Huston Film School would be dedicated to the memory of the movie legend who made his home in the west of Ireland in the 1950s and drew inspiration for many of his films from the surrounding area.

Huston, who made more than 50 films in a career spanning 60 years before he died in 1987, will be the subject of a gala banquet in Los Angeles in May to raise scholarship funds for the school which will open its doors to students this autumn.

His actress daughter Anjelica said the project "recognizes the deep relationships that bind Ireland and California, both past and present. "St. Cleran's was a major part of our family's life," she said, referring to the 19th century country-house inn in Galway that was once the family home.

Wins Sweden Polar Prize

Keith Jarrett

American pianist Keith Jarrett was named the winner Tuesday of the $117,000 Polar Music Prize for his ability "to effortlessly cross boundaries in the world of music."

The award was founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, manager of Swedish pop group ABBA, through a donation to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

Jarrett was the first musician to win the award solo. It has been split between pop artists and classical musicians.

Born in Allentown, Pa., in 1945, Jarrett toured the world as a pianist with the Charles Lloyd Quartet in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He also toured with Miles Davis' electric fusion group.

Last year's winners were South African singer Miriam Makeba and Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina.

Unlikely Link to Nebraska

'Jeopardy'

Each time "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek reads a clue that mentions Nebraska — and it's fairly often — he teases some staffers after the show.

"They keep trying to slip in Nebraska clues that nobody else knows anything about," Trebek said, "like: `Where did Henry Fonda and Marlon Brando's mother go to school?'"

Alex, what is Omaha Central High School?

That's the school executive producer Harry Friedman and senior producer Gary Johnson attended in the 1960s. Johnson also is the head writer — and mostly to blame for all the Nebraska clues.

Also from the state: associate segment producer Stewart Hoke and longtime writer Steve Tamerius.

Nebraska has been named in at least 68 clues in recent years, and many others have had obvious ties to the state even though it was not named.

"We know Nebraska, so we tend to write about it more than other states," Johnson said.

Oslen Twins Decide on Rensselaer

Mary-Kate & Ashley

In 2003, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, known for its excellence in engineering, will have two more reasons to boast.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has had quite a few surprises over the last few years. In late 2000, President Shirley Ann Jackson accepted a one-hundred and thirty million dollar gift from an anonymous donor. Later that year, the same donor increased the size of that gift to four-hundred and ninety million dollars. This fall, thanks in large part to those donations, the predominantly male student body of RPI will be welcoming two gifted and talented actresses to the campus.

Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen (known as "The Olsen Twins") have been accepted into a developmental program along with a small class of the nation's best and brightest nanotechnology engineers slated to start in 2004. The twins are National Merit Scholars and each scored a perfect score of 1600 on their SATs.

Makes Another Cultural Donation

Johnny Carson

Former "Tonight Show" host Johnny Carson, one of the Nebraska's most famous sons, has given another substantial gift to a charity in his home state.

The former king of late-night television has donated $500,000 to the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, endowment President Bob Nefsky said Monday.

The money will be used to support the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Humanities Council, which provide funds for guest speakers, artists and educational exhibits throughout the state.

Carson's gift is the single largest cash contribution to the endowment's $5 million fund-raising campaign, which has raised about half its goal, Nefsky said.

Carson, who lives in Malibu, Calif., grew up in Norfolk and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln before getting his start in broadcasting at WOW radio in Omaha.

CBS Pulls Plug

'Presidio Med' & 'Queens Supreme'

Reality TV has claimed two more scripted victims: CBS' "Presidio Med" and "Queens Supreme."

In one swift move, the network on Monday ordered a second cycle of "Star Search" while killing "Presidio" and dethroning "Queens."

"Presidio Med" has averaged 7.2 million viewers after eight airings on Wednesday at 10 p.m. The drama shuts down production this week after completing 14 episodes, and its slot will occupied by "48 Hours Investigates."

"Queens" aired just three times on Fridays at 10 p.m., attracting 7.1 million viewers. The show had already wrapped production on all 13 episodes of its CBS order. Its slot will be filled with a rotating wheel of "CSI," "CSI: Miami," "Without a Trace" and "48 Hours Investigates."

"Star Search," which airs its first tournament finale Feb. 6, will return with another batch of nine episodes on Wednesdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. starting Feb. 19. The return of "Star Search" had been expected, given the show's strong performance -- particularly in young demos.

Christie Brinkley Concerned

Billy Joel

In the wake of Billy Joel's weekend car crash, ex-wife Christie Brinkley expressed concerns Tuesday about their teenage daughter riding in a car with him.

The 53-year-old singer plowed his 2002 Mercedes-Benz into a tree Saturday in the Hamptons. Joel, who was riding alone, had to be extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was treated and released the following morning.

In a statement released by her publicist, Brinkley, 48, commented on her ex-husband's driving and their 17-year-old daughter, Alexa Ray.

"The seat Alexa was sitting in only hours before this latest crash was completely decimated," Brinkley said. "I'm worried about Billy, but like any mother would be, I am alarmed and concerned about my child's safety by this frightening pattern of accidents."

Brinkley's publicist would not comment further.

Joel and Brinkley were married in 1985. The couple divorced in 1994. Alexa Ray is the couple's only child together.

Reduces Size of Its Board

Disney

Four longtime directors including Hollywood icon Sidney Poitier won't stand for re-election to the Disney board, officials said Monday. That means the Mouse House soon will have 13 directors, following last month's appointment of former Seagram vice chairman Robert Matschullat as a 17th Disney director.

The board contraction is in line with the Burbank-based firm's campaign to make its corporate-governance practices more shareholder-friendly. Head Mouseketeer Michael Eisner secured the services of corporate-governance consultant Ira Millstein last year amid creeping shareholder distrust on Wall Street.

The reduction of Disney's board size and a reshuffle of some committees is aimed at making governance more flexible and open. Also at the December board meeting, former U.S. senator and current Disney board member George Mitchell was appointed to the newly created position of presiding director. Twice yearly he will run board meetings in the absence of corporate executives.

One of the departing directors -- architect Robert Stern -- was recently reclassified as a non-independent director because of architectural services he had provided for Eisner. But a Mouse spokeswoman said she couldn't explain how it was determined which directors would be leaving the board.

Disney said its board will continue to work on other corporate-governance issues, including the formalizing of an Eisner succession plan.

New NBC Series

Rob Lowe

With his "West Wing" days over, Rob Lowe is finalizing a rich deal to star in and produce "Lyon's Den," a new NBC drama pilot under consideration for next fall.

The new project is described as an ensemble legal drama set in a mid-sized, century-old law firm. Lowe would play an idealistic attorney trying to make his mark on the world while struggling to escape the shadow of his powerful father, a state senator.

As part of the deal, Lowe has secured a hefty penalty in case NBC does not pick up the project.

The actor earned about $75,000 per episode for his work on the "West Wing," and is expected to earn significantly more -- low six figures -- for "Lyon's Den," should the project go to series.

Turns 18 Today

Athina Roussel

Athina Roussel, granddaughter of the late Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, becomes one of the world's richest people when she turns 18 Wednesday and inherits part of the family's multibillion-dollar fortune.

Roussel, the last direct descendant of Onassis, will get an estimated $2.7 billion in properties, companies, stock, artwork and a private jet.

The vast wealth amassed by Onassis during his rags-to-riches life includes cash deposits in 217 banks and the lush Ionian island of Skorpios. It is passed down to Roussel from her mother, Christina, who died in 1988.

Roussel is set to become even richer on her 21st birthday when she takes control of the Onassis Foundation and a further $2 billion.

On her birthday, she plans to meet with Swiss authorities and auditors from KPMG Fides auditors, the Swiss firm that has overseen the estate since 1999.

The Swiss weekly l'Illustre, which did not reveal its sources, said Roussel recently told her father she wanted to devote most of her wealth to charity projects and spend $20 million setting up a horse-breeding farm.

''Disney Undervalued by Market''

Michael Eisner

The Walt Disney Co.'s stock is oversold and undervalued just as the company is expected to return to strong growth in 2003 with an ABC network recovery and better theme park results, Chief Executive Michael Eisner told shareholders on Tuesday.

Eisner, in his annual letter to shareholders, repeated Disney's forecast for 25 percent to 35 percent earnings growth in 2003 and "continued strong growth in 2004" as investments in its theme parks and its ESPN cable franchise pay off and as ratings of its ABC network bounce back from a "lousy" season.

Disney shares fell 21 percent in 2002, extending a three-year decline and taking the stock to its lowest since 1994, as it was hit by low ratings at ABC, a slump in travel that lowered its theme park traffic and questions about the independence of its board. Its stock ended up 10 cents at $16.85.

Eisner, whose shareholder letters are known for a conversational tone, was blunt in sizing up two of the company's problems of the past year: weak ABC ratings in prime-time and "Treasure Planet," an epic cartoon that cost $140 million and flopped at the box office.

"After ... let's be frank, after a lousy 2001-20002 season, the new prime-time season is very encouraging," he said of ABC.

Eisner said "'Treasure Planet' never punched through in the crowded marketplace to get noticed. Either we mis-marketed it, the idea wasn't appealing, or the stars were not aligned. But one thing it did teach us: the entertainment business is fickle. Failure is educational. It keeps one humble."

Michael Eisner

Moving Headquarters to Denver

Adelphia

Adelphia Communications Corp. will move its corporate headquarters to Denver, the bankrupt cable television operator's board decided Tuesday, dismaying the man who founded the company a half-century ago in rural north-central Pennsylvania.

Subject to approval by regulators and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, the headquarters will move from Coudersport, Pa., to Denver by midyear, Adelphia spokesman Eric Andrus said.

"After 50 years of building the system with my brother and the family, it naturally saddens all of us, because we worked so hard to build the company," said John J. Rigas. "It's not an unexpected move, but it hurts."

Rigas, 78, who started the company in 1952, declined to comment Tuesday on the allegations of self-dealing and accounting irregularities that led to the company's bankruptcy and his departure as chairman and chief executive last year.

Around Coudersport, where Adelphia's rise from a local cable company to the nation's fifth largest cable provider brought unprecedented growth, the news was greeted sadly.

Adelphia said about 10 percent of its 14,000 employees work at the Coudersport operations center, and most would be unaffected.

Coming Up Short

Ouch

A patient has told of his horror when his penis was left shorter and disfigured after an operation to make it bigger.

The 47-year-old, referred to as Mr A, paid Harley Street surgeon Dr Ravi Kant Agarwal £3,250 to perform the technique, the GMC heard.

He was told his penis would be up to 3in longer and 90 per cent wider and his sex life would improve.

But problems started immediately after the operation, which was supposed to take an hour but lasted for three. Mr A said: "I went home to bed. I was in severe pain. My penis was black, my scrotum was black, between my legs was black and the lower part of my buttocks was black. When I first looked at it, I virtually passed out with shock."

After three months the swelling had gone down, and his penis was half an inch shorter than before. The girth also returned to its previous size, Mr A said.

David Enoch, for the GMC, said the technique involved fat being taken from the stomach and thighs and injected into the shaft of the penis. "It hardly ever works," he added.

Dr Agarwal, of Stockport, Greater Manchester, denies serious professional misconduct. The case continues.
