Trivia Question from Yesterday

The Mugwumps were members of what political party?

      republican                                                      Source

The Mugwumps were Republican political activists who bolted from the United States Republican Party by supporting Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland in the United States presidential election of 1884.

They switched parties because they rejected the financial corruption associated with Republican candidate James G. Blaine. In a close election, the Mugwumps supposedly made the difference in New York state and swung the election to Cleveland. The jocular word mugwump, noted as early as 1832, is from Algonquian (Natick) mugquomp, "important person, kingpin" (from mugumquomp), "war leader" implying that they were "sanctimonious" or "holier-than-thou," in holding themselves aloof from party politics.

After the election, mugwump survived for more than a decade as an epithet for a party bolter in American politics. Many Mugwumps became Democrats or remained independents; most continued to support reform well into the 20th century.        Source

Marian was first, and correct, with:
   Republican

Lois Of Oregon said:
Wow, this one took some research! Not just to find out what exactly the hell a mugwump was, ( rebellious republicans who supported democrat Grover Cleveland ) but when I tried to find a funny picture of Grover Cleveland stuck in a bathtub, I learned it was actually Howard Taft who suffered that indignity, and upon further investigation, became convinced Cleveland and Taft were in fact...THE SAME MAN! I also came across another horrifying discovery: mugwumps of another variety...Democrats for Reagan! It's all to terrible! Seriously, was Jimmy Carter really THAT bad!?! @Charlie, thanks for the kind words, @Sally, those really do look like my kitties!

Much later, they formed a band.

Dale of Diamondy Springs, Norfallcali, replied:
Mugwumps were Rethugs joined Dumbocrats in 1884 to support Grover Cleveland over James G. Blaine, a known swindler corrupt of 19th century values. Real fucking spoiled child fence sitters. They were also a 60's rock band that featured Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty, pre Mamas & Papas.

PS - Lived on a hill in Oakland and had a car take out a fence and a eucalyptus tree that just missed the house but pancaked the dudes car! Did the construction have anything to do with wreck?

Didn't appear that the construction had anything to do with the wrecked car, but I'll bet the kids will insist it did. They totaled a brand-new, cherry red Camaro. Broke the front axle, so they had to wait for a special flat-bed tow-truck. OTOH, everybody walked away from the accident, unhurt. ~m.

Sally said:
The Mugwumps were member's of the Republican Party. In the late 1800's they broke away and supported Grover Cleveland for President - and severed from their Party.

PS: I have been following the horrendous aftermath of the mega storm that hit the Philippines over the Weekend. And, today, being Veteran's Day, I am recalling a Ken Burns documentary which I saw a few years ago about WWII (the defining war of my generation) and about the loyalty of the people of the Philippines and support which they gave our troops. Who remembers the Bataan Death March, when the Japanese invaded the islands and captured both the Philippine and American troops? The killing and torturing of so many back then should encourage us to help our allies in this hour of need... God bless all the people there - bet our troops will be aiding them very soon!

And, Joe S     answered:
   Republican party.
Mugwumps and the Outcome of the 1884 Election
Cleveland narrowly won the popular vote thanks to divisions within the Republican Party. Idealistic Republican "Mugwumps," who voted for Cleveland because of their disgust over Blaine's alleged indiscretions, were instrumental in securing the first Democratic presidency since James Buchanan. This mass defection of reform-minded Republicans became known as the "Republican Revolt."
The "Honest Republican Voter" cartoon portrays the split in the Republican party over Blaine's nomination. The "honest" (Mugwump) Republican voter chooses the path of independence, following the brains end of the Republican elephant.

US Postal Service Sunday Deliveries

Amazon

Amazon is rolling out Sunday package delivery as part of a new deal with the U.S. Postal Service.

Delivery started on Sunday to customers in the New York and Los Angeles metropolitan areas, but Amazon and the Postal Service plan to extend service to "a large portion of the U.S. population" next year, the company said. This includes the cities of Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, and Phoenix.

Sunday delivery will be available to all Amazon customers for no extra charge but Amazon expects it will be particularly popular with members of its Prime service, which costs $79 a year and comes with free two-day shipping on many items on the site as well as access to Amazon's TV and movie streaming service.

Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed, but the deal is likely to give the financially ailing Postal Service a boost. The agency, which lost $16 billion last year and expects to lose $6 billion this year, had tried but failed to end Saturday mail delivery as a cost-saving measure. The Postal Service's financial quandary stems largely from the fact that fewer people send mail, instead using the Internet to pay bills, send letters or birthday greetings. Adding to its troubles is a 2006 congressional requirement that it make advance payments to cover expected health care costs for future retirees.

Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum

Columbus, Ohio

There is a place where Snoopy frolics carefree with the scandalous Yellow Kid, where Pogo the possum philosophizes alongside Calvin and Hobbes. It's a place where Beetle Bailey loafs with Garfield the cat, while Krazy Kat takes another brick to the noggin, and brooding heroes battle dark forces on the pages of fat graphic novels.

That doesn't even begin to describe everything that's going on behind the walls of the new Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum on the Ohio State University campus, opening to the public Saturday.

"This is the stuff that makes me drool," says Jim Borgman, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist who now draws the "Zits" newspaper comic strip. "I enjoy art of all kinds, but it's as if cartoons were segregated for many years and not allowed into such hallowed halls. And this is kind of a moment of setting things right, I think, giving cartooning its due when it has been in the wings all these years."

The museum has originals from everyone from Richard Outcault - whose "Yellow Kid" in a 19th century comic strip spawned the term "yellow journalism" - to Charles Schulz ("Peanuts"), classic "Pogo" story lines from Walt Kelly, Garry Trudeau's "Doonesbury," Chester Gould's "Dick Tracy," early "Blondie" strips from Chic Young and the entire collection of Jeff Smith, an Ohio State graduate who created the hugely popular "Bone" series of comic books.

It's all been moved to a new 30,000-square-foot home in a high-profile corridor of the sprawling Columbus campus, into a space renamed for Ireland, the former editorial cartoonist for The Columbus Dispatch who was one of the pioneers of the art form. His family donated a big chunk of money for the project.

Need A Good Home

80 Parrots

Maybe 10 times a week, someone calls Steve Lazicki looking to get rid of a parrot. They're too loud, too demanding and sometimes just too long-lived.

Now, the shelter that Lazicki calls his orphanage may have to close its doors.

The commercial building where Lazicki runs his Birdhouse and Rescue is slated for demolition because the owner plans to redevelop the area. Lazicki and the 80 strays in his care must be out by Dec. 30.

With affordable space hard to come by, it isn't easy to find enough room to accommodate dozens of the large, loud bird. Raising his voice over the squawks and squeaks of the macaws, parrots and cockatoos, Lazicki says he worries about his flock's future.

The shelter takes in abused and abandoned parrots and works to find them new homes. More than 50 have been adopted so far this year, but there's a steady stream of parrots, macaws and cockatiels right behind them.

Medical File Sold

Marilyn Monroe

Medical files proving Hollywood screen siren Marilyn Monroe underwent cosmetic surgery sold for $25,600 during a weekend auction in California.

The sale, organized in Beverly Hills by Julien's Auctions, was dedicated to personal objects of the rich and famous, including Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Andrews, Greta Garbo and Princess Diana.

Monroe's medical file had aroused curiosity because it includes several x-rays of the star's face and medical summaries offering details on the surgeries she had.

The medical records refer to Monroe by various aliases. She saw Dr. Michael Gurdin from July 1958 and her chief complaint was "chin deformity."

In 1950, then 24, the star of "Some Like It Hot" and "The Seven-year Itch" had a cartilage implant in her chin, which the doctor said slowly began to dissolve. The implant was done as part of a procedure called a tip rhinoplasty, on the end of Monroe's nose, the records show.

Detention Sheets To Auction

John Lennon

John Lennon apparently wasn't an advocate of peace and love in high school.

A pair of the late Beatle's detention sheets show him being punished for "fighting in class," ''shoving" and being a general nuisance.

The sheets from Quarry Bank High School for Boys in Liverpool are to be sold online by TracksAuction.com later this month.

One of the sheets says Lennon showed "just no interest whatsoever" in school.

Unpublished Biography To Auction

JD Salinger

An unauthorized and never-published biography of J.D. Salinger is expected to bring up to $6,000 at auction.

Ian Hamilton's "J.D. Salinger: A Writing Life" is being offered at Swann Auction Galleries on Nov. 21.

It is being sold by a private American collector and has a pre-sale estimate of $4,000 to $6,000.

Salinger, who died in 2010, successfully blocked release of Hamilton's book in 1987, citing the use of previously unpublished letters.

Anti-Death Penalty

Larry Flynt

Serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin is getting support from an unlikely source: Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, who was paralyzed by a bullet apparently fired by Franklin 35 years ago.

Franklin is set for execution Nov. 20 in Missouri for a 1977 murder. But he's claimed responsibility for killing more than 20 people. He admitted shooting Flynt in 1978 but was never charged.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a court motion Saturday on Flynt's behalf, arguing that Missouri's execution process is too secretive and demanding more information be made public.

Flynt recently wrote a column in the Hollywood Reporter, saying execution was vengeance, not justice.

Shield Law

Jana Winter

New York's highest court will decide whether state law protects a Fox News reporter from revealing confidential sources from a story about James Holmes, who's accused of killing 12 people in a suburban Denver movie theater last year.

Holmes' lawyers want Jana Winter, who works at New York-based Fox News, brought to a Colorado courtroom to name two law officers who told her Holmes had mailed a notebook depicting violence to a psychiatrist. They argue the sources violated a gag order, may have later lied under oath about that and won't be credible as trial witnesses.

Holmes' attorneys argue that New York journalists, as a group, are not immune from being subpoenaed to testify in other states.

The Court of Appeals will hear arguments Tuesday. Its ruling is expected in December.

New York has a strong so-called "shield law" protecting professional journalists from having to disclose their confidential sources and preventing courts from finding them in contempt if they don't disclose. Sued Over Tweet

Spike Lee

An elderly Florida couple who found themselves caught in the center of the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case last year has filed a lawsuit against film director Spike Lee for retweeting information that mistook their home for Zimmerman's.

Lee sent a Twitter message last year to his 240,000 followers with an address that he thought belonged to Zimmerman, who was accused of killing the unarmed teenager Martin.

But the address was actually that of Elaine and David McClain of Sanford, Fla., both in their early 70s, whose home became the focal point of online vitriol aimed at Zimmerman, who also lived in Sanford.

Now the McClains have accused Lee of negligence in a lawsuit filed in Florida and posted by The Smoking Gun.

Lee previously settled with the couple over the tweet. The couples' attorney, Matt Morgan, told the Los Angeles Times in March 2012 that Lee called the McClains to apologize and compensated them. But the couple's lawsuit now alleges that the threats continued throughout Zimmerman's 2013 trial. Morgan did not return calls for comment.

Activists Moved To St. Petersburg

Greenpeace

Thirty people arrested in Russia over a protest against Arctic oil drilling were moved from the northern city of Murmansk on Monday on their way to pre-trial detention centers in St. Petersburg, federal investigators and Greenpeace said.

The transfer of the 28 activists and two journalists may be aimed at curbing international criticism of Russia over what the environmental group says was a peaceful protest.

Activists have reported being confined for 23 hours a day in bleak, sometimes ice-cold cells in Murmansk, a port city above the Arctic Circle whose remote location complicates access for lawyers and consular officials.

Charged with hooliganism and facing up to seven years in prison if convicted, they had been denied bail and held in pre-trial detention in Murmansk, 1,000 km (640 miles) north of St. Petersburg.

Revenue Falls

Rupert Corp

News Corp.'s revenue unexpectedly fell in its first quarter since being spun off as a publishing-focused company, as revenue from its Australian newspapers plunged. The results Monday were short of analysts' forecasts and the company's shares fell more than 2 percent.

Net income in the fiscal first quarter, which ended in September, was $27 million, or 5 cents per share. That compares with a loss of $92 million, or 16 cents per share, a year ago.

Adjusted to exclude costs related to a U.K. hacking probe and other items, earnings came to $17 million, or 3 cents per share, which was below the 5 cents expected by analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue fell 3 percent to $2.07 billion, also below the $2.18 billion analysts were looking for.

Revenue from news and information services fell 10 percent to $1.5 billion. The company attributed much of that decline to a 22 percent drop in revenue from Australian newspapers, which include The Australian and The Daily Telegraph.

Musial died in January at age 92. His family kept most of his belongings but grandson Brian Schwarze said Musial's four-bedroom Ladue home was stuffed with so many things he'd collected over the years that relatives decided on an auction.

PG-13 Rivals R Movies

Gun Violence

Gun violence in PG-13 rated movies has increased considerably in recent decades, to the point that it sometimes exceeds gun violence in even R-rated films, according to a study released Monday.

Ohio State University and the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania surveyed gun violence in top-grossing movies, finding that the frequency of gun violence had more than tripled in PG-13 films since 1985. ThePG-13 rating was introduced in 1984.

Gun violence in PG-13 movies has rivaled the frequency of gun violence in R-rated movies since 2009, and actually surpassed it in 2012, according to the study.

Researchers examined a total of 945 films, drawing from the 30 top-grossing movies from 1950 through 2012. It focuses on sequences involving "the firing of hand-held guns with the intent to harm or kill a living being."

Critics of the ratings system have long held that it places too much emphasis on sexuality and too little on violence.

Settles Suit

Burning Man

Burning Man organizers have agreed to pay the Pershing County sheriff's office more than $600,000 a year over the next 10 years for security and other services at the annual counter-culture festival in the Black Rock Desert.

Black Rock City LLC, the San Francisco-based company behind Burning Man, also agreed to take out a $1 million insurance policy for the event and reimburse the sheriff and district attorney for costs related to prosecuting crimes at the festival, according to court documents filed in U.S. District Court in Reno last week.

The new agreement is intended to settle a lawsuit Black Rock City filed against the county a year ago challenging the constitutionality of a new county ordinance that requires the company to pay a $1.50-per-head fee for festivalgoers.

U.S. District Judge Robert C. Jones has scheduled a hearing in Reno Oct. 18 to consider Black Rock City's motion to dismiss the lawsuit based on the new agreement. Pershing County is not contesting the motion.

The deal comes after Assemblyman David Bobzien, D-Reno, introduced a bill in the Legislature earlier this year seeking to prevent local governments from imposing fees on any gatherings already permitted on federal lands. The measure eventually was amended and signed into law, authorizing local governments to sign agreements with event organizers exempting them from other county ordinances and negotiated reimbursement for services.

Starts Identifying Art

Germany

Bowing to pressure from Jewish groups and art experts, the German government made public details of paintings in a recovered trove of some 1,400 pieces of art, many of which may have been stolen by the Nazis, and said it would put together a task force to speed identification.

The German government said in a written statement that about 590 of the pieces could have been stolen by the Nazis. In a surprise move, it quickly featured some 25 of those works on the website www.lostart.de and said it would be regularly updated.

Officials had so far released few details about the art found in the Munich apartment of 80-year-old Cornelius Gurlitt, though it was known to include pieces by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. The discovery resulted from an ongoing tax probe, adding to secrecy concerns.

Among the paintings listed on the site were Otto Dix's "The Woman in the Theater Box," Otto Griebel's "Child at the Table," and Max Liebermann's "Rider on the Beach."

Los Angeles Auction

Banksy

Four early works of elusive British artist Banksy will go on sale at an auction in December, joining the artist's "Flower Girl" piece, Julien's Auctions said on Monday.

The four graffiti works include "Happy Choppers," a 2002 mural that first appeared on a wall at the Whitecross Street Market in London and features a stenciled group of military helicopters, one adorned with a pink bow.

The piece is estimated to fetch between $150,000 and $200,000, and will join the sale of "Flower Girl," a stencil work that first appeared on a Los Angeles gas station wall. It is expected to fetch between $150,000 and $300,000.

Beverly Hills-based Julien's Auctions said the auction marked the first time that Banksy's public street art had gone on sale in the United States.
