Two things make the Apple Stores beautiful. One is they are a place of tech fantasy. Go there and leave convinced that with a few clicks of the keys you can make an entry for the next Sundance Film Festival. Secondly - and this is even more important - they serve as clinics offering outpatient care for those in the midst of technical meltdown. … Apple's most loyal customers are we who have spent hours on the phone being sent to three continents for help getting a gadget to work. We know that the greatest luxury isn't fashion. It is service.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Introduced in 1963, the Zone Improvement Plan is better known by what term?

      ZIP Code                                                      Source

ZIP codes are a system of postal codes used by the United States Postal Service (USPS) since 1963. The term ZIP, an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan, is properly written in capital letters and was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, when senders use the code in the postal address. The basic format consists of five decimal numerical digits. An extended ZIP+4 code, introduced in the 1980s, includes the five digits of the ZIP code, a hyphen, and four more digits that determine a more specific location within a given ZIP code. The term ZIP code was originally registered as a servicemark (a type of trademark) by the U.S. Postal Service, but its registration has since expired.        Source

I'll give it away: my ZIP code is 44035, my area code is 440, and so is my street address.

I remember the day I received notice from the PO about it. What a pain in the ass that was!!

Who remembers this annoying little man, Mr Zip?
PS: At that time, I used to mail out over 200 Holiday cards because I had lived in and/or traveled to so many places. Sure, I had addresses for friends/college networks, etc., but NO 5 digit ZIP CODES! Of course, the directories were not out yet, and calling the PO was very time consuming - plus they would only give you about 10 at a time! Furthermore, when people sent you mail/cards, they would write out their return addresses, sans the damn zip code!! I believe that we all thought it would go away in time...
We all knew that it was invented to eliminate jobs although advertised for efficiency...
We did get Xmas mail on Sundays back then - to appease us I suspect. I still hate the zips...

Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Carol Burnett

When Carol Burnett launched her namesake variety show in the 1960s, one TV executive told her the genre was "a man's game." She proved him wrong with an 11-year run that averaged 30 million viewers each week.

On Sunday, the trailblazing comedienne received the nation's top humor prize at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Top entertainers including Julie Andrews, Tony Bennett, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and others performed in Burnett's honor as she received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

The show was taped Sunday and will be broadcast Nov. 24 on PBS stations.

"This is very encouraging," Burnett, 80, deadpanned in accepting the prize. "I mean it was a long time in coming, but I understand because there are so many people funnier than I am, especially here in Washington.

"With any luck, they'll soon get voted out, and I'll still have the Mark Twain prize."

Dolly Parton is home resting after being treated and released for minor injuries she suffered in a car crash she described as "a fender bender."

Kirt Webster says Parton was already home Monday afternoon following the accident that happened shortly before noon CDT in Nashville, Tenn. Parton says in a statement that she's "all good. Just a little tired and sore."

Police say the 67-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member was riding in an SUV that was hit by another vehicle. Parton and the two others were taken to local hospitals for treatment. A news release says none of the injuries appeared serious.

Crater of Diamonds State Park

Arkansas

A 14-year-old girl from Oklahoma City has unearthed a 3.85-carat diamond at Arkansas' Crater of Diamonds State Park.

Tana Clymer discovered the canary gem Saturday at the park, which is the only diamond-producing site in the United States that is open to the public. Tana said she'd been digging in the dirt for about two hours when she discovered the gem on the surface of the search field.

"This canary diamond is very similar to the gem-quality, 4.21-carat canary diamond found at the Crater of Diamonds by Oklahoma State Trooper Marvin Culver of Nowata, Oklahoma, on March 12, 2006, a gem he named the Okie Dokie Diamond," said Bill Henderson, assistant park superintendent.

Her gem is the 396th diamond found so far this year at the park in southern Arkansas. Other gems discovered at the state park include amethyst, garnet, peridot, jasper, agate, calcite, barite, and quartz.

Pleads Not Guilty

CeeLo Green

Grammy-winning R&B singer and "The Voice" TV judge CeeLo Green pleaded not guilty on Monday to a felony charge of giving the drug ecstasy to a woman without her knowledge while the two were dining, prosecutors said.

Green, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, was charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office with one count of furnishing a controlled substance.

Green entered the plea in a Los Angeles court and faces up to four years in state prison if convicted.

The singer was ordered to post $30,000 to remain free on bail, and is due back in court on November 20, Robison said.

Finally React

Boy Scouts

Two Utah men already facing possible criminal charges for purposely toppling an ancient rock formation in a state park have now been removed from their posts as Boy Scout leaders.

A northern Utah Boy Scouts council announced Monday that Glenn Taylor and Dave Hall will no longer be allowed to lead scouting troops due to what happened Oct. 11 at Goblin Valley State Park, which they filmed and posted on Facebook.

The move comes on the heels of the national Boy Scouts of America condemning the men's actions last week and promising a review of the incident. The Boy Scouts' Utah National Parks Council posted a statement on its website saying the men's actions are not in line with the principles the organization teaches about preserving nature.

Hall and Taylor came under fire last week after posting a video on Facebook where Taylor can be seen wedging himself between a formation and a boulder to knock a large rock off the formation's top. Taylor and his two companions can then be seen cheering, high-fiving and dancing.

"Inappropriate" Pictures

Rihanna

Pop star Rihanna was asked to leave Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque complex for posing for "inappropriate" pictures outside one of the world's largest Muslim places of worship.

Authorities said they had taken action before the Barbadian diva entered the mosque itself, which is not off-limits to non-Muslims and has become a major tourist attraction in the United Arab Emirates capital.

The 25-year-old, who performed live in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, posted the pictures on online photo-sharing site Instagram.

She posed in a black jumpsuit in the courtyard of the mosque, wearing crimson lipstick and nail polish.

She wore a headscarf in all of the photographs but the poses could be regarded as suggestive.

Yacht Sinks

Wayne

Authorities are investigating the sinking of a yacht owned by Las Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton at a marina.

National Park Service spokeswoman Christie Vanover said Monday that the 65-foot (20-meter) vessel sank stern-first in 45 feet (13.7 metres) of water while it was in a slip at the Temple Bar marina. That's on the Arizona side of the Colorado River reservoir, about 80 miles (128 kilometres) east of Las Vegas.

Vanover says no one was on the boat, and no injuries are reported.

Newton's sister-in-law, Tricia McCrone, confirms that the 1996 Skipperliner named Rendezvous belongs to Newton.

Top Breast-Feeding Expert Arrested

Russia

Russia has had its share of problems with religious cults. From faith-healers and doomsayers to messiahs of every description, there are roughly 4,000 of them across the country with some 800,000 followers, according to the Russian Association of Centers for Religious and Sectarian Studies. But with no clear definition of a cult in Russian law, very few of their leaders are ever charged with any crimes, even when their teachings are clearly harmful to their followers. So on Friday, Oct. 18, when Russian police announced the arrest of an alleged cult leader, local media splashed the news across the headlines. The only problem was the supposed cult turned out to be a pre-natal center, and its director, Zhanna Tsaregradskaya, had never claimed to have any occult powers. She merely taught seminars on breast-feeding and natural births.

According to the statement released on Friday by Russia's counter-extremism police, the Rozhana Center, which was founded in 1989 to help re-introduce home births in Russia, was actually "a sect with a strict hierarchical structure." Contrary to common practices in Soviet and Russian medicine, the center encourages mothers to breast-feed their newborns, and it provides training courses for midwives and expecting mothers to give birth at home instead of at a hospital, according to the center's website and its former clients.

In the West, such courses first appeared about a century ago and have become commonplace around the world. In Russia they seem to have resulted in felony charges. In their statement, investigators said they had charged Tsaregradskaya on two counts - "creating a non-commercial organization that encroaches on the personalities and rights of citizens" and "the incitement of hatred and hostility." If convicted of both charges, Tsaregradskaya faces up to 7 years in prison.

Tsaregradskaya, who has been released pending trial, did not respond to requests for comment. But one of the coordinators at the center, whom TIME reached by phone on Monday, denied that any violence or "brainwashing" was used in their training courses. "We provide free phone consultations to mothers who are having trouble breast-feeding, or who simply want to know more about it," said the coordinator, Anna, who declined to give her surname as she was not authorized to speak to the press. She said the hotline continues to function as normal, and no police have come to shut it down. "We have no idea why our director has been singled out like this."

Google Earth

Oregon

Police say the view from space helped them bust a medical marijuana garden with too many plants in Southern Oregon.

The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports authorities received a tip that 50-year-old Curtis W. Croft was bragging about all the pot he was growing on his property outside Grants Pass. Investigators went to Google Earth to find out what they could see.

Authorities say online satellite images taken in June showed dozens of plants in neat rows, so the Rogue Area Drug Enforcement Team sent up an aircraft for a closer look and checked state medical marijuana records.

They showed Croft was registered to grow for five people, which amounts to 30 mature plants. Authorities say a police raid in September seized 94 plants.

Diggers Find Artefacts

India

Indian archaeologists said Monday they have found artefacts in the ruins of a centuries-old fort where a Hindu holy man has said he dreamt that a hoard of gold was buried.

Archaeologists began digging at the fort in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Friday, three months after the seer told a junior government minister about his dream of a 1,000-tonne gold treasure.

The dig in the impoverished village of Daudiakala created a media storm and drew large numbers of local residents, prompting barricades to be thrown up around the site.

The fort belonged to Raja Rao Ram Bux Singh, a Hindu king who was executed after taking part in a 1857 revolution against British colonial rulers.

In Memory

Lou Scheimer

Lou Scheimer, who founded the Filmation animation studio that produced Saturday morning cartoons including "Fat Albert" and "The Archie Show," has died. He was 84.

The Pittsburgh native behind the cartoon powerhouse died on Thursday, two days before his 85th birthday, Scheimer's wife Mary Ann said on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Scheimer's company was the largest animation operation in the country in the early 1980s by number of employees.

Scheimer, who graduated with an art degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, founded the company in 1962 with a $5,000 loan from his mother-in-law and opened a one-room office in Southern California. His first big hit was "The New Adventures of Superman" and the studio went on to work on series including "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" and "The Archie Show."

He won a Daytime Emmy Award as a producer of the 1974-75 season of the "Star Trek" animated series.

In 1969, Filmation was sold to a cable operator that was bought by Westinghouse. Scheimer continued to head Filmation but was told to cut costs and in 1987 announced that some work would be shipped overseas.

In 1989, Filmation was bought by a French investor group that closed the company's Woodland Hills plant and fired most employees.

Scheimer retired several years ago. He is survived by his wife, his daughter, Erika and his son, Lane.

A man guards a graffiti by British street artist Banksy in the Bronx section of New York October 21, 2013. Known for his anti-authoritarian black-and-white stenciled images, which have sold at auction for upwards of $2 million, Banksy is treating New Yorkers to a daily dose of spray-painted art - while eluding the police and incurring the wrath of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
