Anecdotes

Death

• While traveling, Mark Twain and his friends tortured irritating tour guides by constantly asking if someone was dead. For example, when a tour guide showed them a bust of Christopher Columbus, they would ask, “Is he dead?” Once, Mr. Twain and friends visited the Capuchin Cemetery, where the bones of dead monks were used to make arches and other ornaments. One of the exhibitions of the cemetery was the corpse of a monk who had been dead for 150 years. Mr. Twain decided to cut the tour short because he could tell that his friends were tempted to ask, “Is he dead?”

• Children’s author Roald Dahl almost died because of careless instructions. During World War II, he was told to fly to a certain airbase but when he arrived nothing was there because his instructions were off by 50 miles. Low on fuel and with night approaching, he decided to try to land the plane. He crashed, and he suffered serious head injuries. Fortunately, he managed to get out of the plane. The burning plane attracted the attention of some British soldiers and Mr. Dahl was taken to a military hospital.

• Dorothy Parker was cremated after her death. She greatly admired Martin Luther King, Jr., and she bequeathed her estate to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Her ashes are at the headquarters of the NAACP, which dedicated a memorial garden to her memory. The marker in the garden says, “This memorial garden is dedicated to her noble spirit, which celebrated the oneness of humankind and to the bonds of everlasting friendship between black and Jewish people.”

• As a man who has spent much time in the wilderness, Gary Paulsen, author of Hatchet, has seen corpses of people who have died of many things, including “blatant stupidity.” In one remarkable case, a man went cross-country skiing in the dead of winter but neglected to take along matches or a lighter. He broke his leg and froze to death, although enough wood was around him to have kept thousands of people warm.

• Robert Benchley and Charles MacArthur attended the funeral of a friend whose wake had been held in a third-floor walk-up apartment. After the service, the pallbearers picked up the coffin and started to carry it down a twisting staircase that forced them to hold the coffin in a slanted position. Watching them, Mr. Benchley commented, “Oh my, the change will fall out of his pocket.”

• A man asked Scottish poet Robert Burns to lend him his black coat so he could attend a funeral the following day. Mr. Burns replied that he would be attending that funeral, so he could not lend him his black coat. But he suggested, “I can recommend the most excellent substitute. Throw your character over your shoulders. That will be the blackest coat you ever wore in your lifetime.”

• While writing Roots, Alex Haley became depressed. He suffered from writer’s block, and he traveled on a ship to Africa, hoping that it would help him to write. One night, he thought about throwing himself overboard and drowning, but then he heard the voices of his ancestors, including Kunta Kinte and his grandmother, speak to him and tell him that he had to finish Roots.

• Quentin Crisp, author of The Naked Civil Servant, could be bitchy when confronted by public displays of grief over the deaths of celebrities whom the mourners did not know. When a crying woman ran into a cafe where Mr. Crisp was sitting and dramatically announced that the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas had died, Mr. Crisp asked, “Was he a relation of yours?”

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What did Costermongers sell in the streets of London and other large European cities?

       Fruits & Vegetables                                                      Source

Costermonger, coster, or costard is a street seller of fruit and vegetables in London and other British towns. The term is derived from the words costard (a medieval variety of apple) and monger (seller), and later came to be used to describe hawkers in general. Some historians have pointed out that a hierarchy existed within the costermonger class and that while costermongers sold from a handcart or animal-drawn cart, mere hawkers carried their wares in a basket.

Costermongers met a need for rapid food distribution from the wholesale markets (e.g., in London; Smithfield for meat, Spitalfields for fruit and vegetables or Billingsgate for fish) by providing retail sales at locations that were convenient for the labouring classes. Costermongers used a variety of devices to transport and display produce: a cart might be stationary at a market stall, a mobile (horse-drawn or wheelbarrow) apparatus or a hand-held basket might be used for light-weight goods such as herbs and flowers.

Costermongers experienced a turbulent history, yet survived numerous attempts to eradicate their class from the streets. Programmes designed to curtail their activities occurred during the reigns of Elizabeth I, Charles I and reached a peak during Victorian times. However, the social cohesion within the coster community, along with sympathetic public support, enabled them to resist efforts to eradicate them. As highly visible, colourful characters who provided service and convenience to the labouring classes, costermongers enjoyed a high level of public sympathy at times when they came under attack from authorities.

They became known for their melodic sales patter, poems and chants, which they used to attract attention. Both the sound and appearance of costermongers contributed to a distinctive street life that characterised London and other large European cities, including Paris, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their loud sing-song cry or chants used to attract attention became part of the fabric of street life in large cities in Britain and Europe. Costermongers exhibited a distinct identity. Individuals signalled membership of the coster community through a dress code, especially the large neckerchief, known as a kingsman, tied round their necks. Their hostility towards the police was legendary. The distinctive identity and culture of costermongers led to considerable appeal as subject-matter for artists, dramatists, comedians, writers and musicians. Parodies of the costermonger and his way of life were frequent features in Victorian music halls. Costermongers were ubiquitous in mid-Victorian England, but their numbers began to decline in the second half of the 20th-century when they began to take up pitches in the regulated markets.        Source

Fruits and vegetables. I was amused by the trivia answers yesterday claiming Andy William’s ex-wife shot and killed Jean-Claude Killy, which is impossible since Killy is alive and well in 2020 at age 77. She shot a different skier, okay? Spider Sabich was the American skier who was shot and killed by French born actress Claudine Longet in 1976. She had a good lawyer, and screw ups by the cops meant evidence that might have convicted her of murder were excluded from her trial. She served 30 days on a lesser charge and went back to France, where she still lives.

Sewage Plant

John Oliver

Comedian John Oliver upped the stakes in a tongue-in-cheek spat with a Connecticut city, offering to donate $55,000 to charity if officials follow through on a joke to name its sewage treatment plant after him.

Mayor Mark Boughton said last week that Danbury was going to rename the facility the John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant, in response to Oliver's expletive-filled rant against the city on a recent episode of HBO's “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver."

On Sunday's show, Oliver said he was surprised and delighted by the city's response. But then he went off on another rant after playing a video of Boughton saying it was just a joke.

Oliver offered to donate $55,000 to Danbury-area charities, including $25,000 to the Connecticut Food Bank, if the city renamed the plant after him. If not, Oliver said he would make charitable donations to “rival” towns including Waterbury and Torrington.

Profoundly Explains

Jim Gaffigan

Funnyman risked life and livelihood because ‘I didn’t want to explain to my grandchildren that I didn’t fight to stop Trump’

Foodie, comedian and suddenly inspired activist Jim Gaffigan got political after the president’s RNC speech last week because he felt he had no other choice. He also discovered threats against his life and livelihood would be part of the deal for speaking up on Twitter about politics.

The 54-year-old funnyman posted a long open letter on Facebook late Sunday, explaining why he critically tweeted nearly 20 times after Trump “profoundly” accepted his party’s nomination for reelection.

His Facebook posting is called “What I’ve Learned Since I Lost My Mind.”

Wedding News

Niecy Nash

"Claws" actress Niecy Nash and soul singer-songwriter Jessica Betts revealed Monday via social media that they had tied the knot.

"Mrs. Carol Denise Betts," Nash (whose birth name is Carol) captioned her Instagram post of the happy couple decked out in white, adding the hashtag #LoveWins.

The wedding news took fans by surprise, essentially serving as a coming out for Nash, who has played queer characters before but never discussed her own identity publicly. Nash married her second husband, electrical engineer Jay Tucker, in 2011 and announced their divorce in October 2019. It was finalized in March.

Nash is also known for her roles on "Reno 911!," "Mrs. America" and "When They See Us." In 2014, she played Dr. Jean Fishman, a lesbian doctor, on “The Mindy Project.” Three years later, she talked to LGBTQ+ newspaper Between the Lines about the role.

Covid-19

Mark Mothersbaugh

Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh spent 18 days at L.A.’s Cedar-Sinai hospital battling Covid-19 in June, he revealed in a harrowing interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Mothersbaugh thinks he may have contracted the virus in late May while working near strangers at Mutato, his music production company. He dismissed early symptoms as mere fatigue, but called in his wife when his fever hit 103. “A nurse came over the next morning and said, ‘You should be in ICU,'” Mothersbaugh recalled. “I said, ‘That’s ridiculous.’ She replied that she’d been a nurse for three decades: ‘You need an ambulance right now.’”

Mothersbaugh’s wife, Anita Greenspan, says that the nurse saved his life. He spent the next two weeks at Cedar-Sinai, relying on a ventilator to breathe, delusional through much of the ordeal. “There’s a bookstore I love where I get stationery supplies, and in my mind I had been there,” he said. “I was convinced for about two weeks that I had been hit by a brick by somebody in Little Tokyo.”

“I felt blood from being hit,” he continued. “I was handcuffed to a parking deck downtown. I had this whole elaborate story of how these kids sold me to an ambulance company that then got some sort of a payment for delivering Covid patients to their ICUs. I totally believed it.”

Ex-Boyfriend Offered Plea Deal

Breonna Taylor

Jamarcus Glover turned down the plea deal that would have implicated Breonna Taylor in his alleged crimes

Breonna Taylor’s ex-boyfriend was offered a plea deal if he would claim that she was part of an “organized crime syndicate.”

Jamarcus Glover, Taylor’s ex-boyfriend and the focus of the no-knock raid which took her life, pled not guilty to drug charges Friday. Court records indicated that prosecutors were willing to give him a plea deal if he were to implicate Taylor in his alleged crimes, WDRB reported Monday.

Glover was given the offer by the Jefferson Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office on July 13 to avoid a 10-year prison sentence and be sentenced to possible probation.

In return for leniency, he was required to admit he and “co-codefendants,” were involved in a drug trafficking operation in Louisville, Kentucky through April 22.

20 More Counts

Ron Jeremy

Adult film star Ron Jeremy is facing 20 additional sexual assault charges involving 13 women, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

The new charges include six counts of sexual battery by restraint, five counts of forcible rape, three counts of forcible oral copulation and two counts of forcible penetration by a foreign object. The amended complaint comes after Jeremy was charged with sexually assaulting four women back in June; he has pleaded not guilty to those charges.

Jeremy will be arraigned on the new charges today, August 31st. His attorney did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s request for comment.

The new charges date as far back as 2004, while the most recent one involves an incident that allegedly took place January 1st, 2020. The ages of the alleged victims range from 15 to 54.

Irony Is Dead

Herman Cain

The twitter account of Herman Cain (R-Worm Food) posted that Covid-19 was "not as deadly" as made out, just weeks after the one-time Republican presidential candidate died from the virus.

The prominent conservative businessman died in July as a result of the virus after spending weeks in critical condition.

Cain's twitter account has continued to post several times a day after his death, most commonly to share articles from the dubious Western Journal, one of which provided the basis for Monday's coronavirus claim.

"It looks like the virus is not as deadly as the mainstream media first made it out to be," the tweet read, linking to a Western Journal article on a recent data release from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Cain's daughter Melanie Cain Gallo, announced after the businessman's death that his social media team and family members would continue to run his twitter account.

Interactive Map

Your Hometown

The Earth has changed dramatically over the last 4.543 billion years. Just think how you've changed since you were 12. It's another thing to see for yourself how your hometown has moved over the course of 750 million years as our planet's tectonic plates have shifted and landmasses have grown apart or else been submerged beneath the oceans.

The map, created by California paleontologist Ian Webster, allows you to enter your hometown and select a time period from now until 750 million years ago, around 150 million years before multicellular animals emerged.

That's not all that's on show here. By going through different time periods, you can see how early continents moved together to form the supercontinent Pangea around 335 million years ago, before breaking apart around 175 million years ago. You can also jump to different time periods, such as the Cretaceous when dinosaurs roamed the Earth (on the other side of the galaxy) or when animals began to take their first steps on land.
