Henry Rollins' 20 Favorite Punk Albums (LA Weekly)
For me, as a lean definition, I go by the classic UK 1977 graduating class, Pistols, Clash, etc., and go from there. Beyond that, there were a lot of great Punk Rock bands who never made full albums. The Machines, The Killjoys, Some Chicken, and countless others. So many great bands and great records in this genre and the surrounding/resulting genres. Best bet is just to get the music playing for as long as possible.

Wagga Wagga resident Jeremy Sear was browsing DVDs at a JB Hi-Fi store when he spotted a review of Finding Nemo by a staff member. It read: "Like the movie Taken? Check this out! This dude's family is slaughtered by serial killers, leaving only his disabled son alive who then gets kidnapped! So the dude has to travel a great distance with a senile female in a quest to reclaim his son. Finding Nemo is a brutal story of love, family and friendship."

Tonight, we got a knock at our door." The woman brought them a cake with fruit and the words "Thank you" and "Chris & Wife" written on it and also a card from Hallmark. Samx3i posted photos of the cake and card on Imgur and wrote about the inside of the card, "Seriously the best part. She actually drew an adorable cartoon version of herself being grateful."

Earlier today, with the help of her family, she used tape to put up a sign in her window reading "Send Pizza" along with her room number. The sign was spotted by a Redditor who posted it to the site. Within an hour it made the front page where it was seen by millions and many, many pizzas were ordered.

A wild raven perched himself on our fence and squawked for over an hour. I went to see what was up with him and saw that he had four porcupine quills stuck in him, three in the side of his face and one in his wing. This video shows my Mom taking out the ones in his face. Very bizarre he let us get that close and even more bizzare he let my Mom pull the quills out. He hung around for the day and was gone the next. Best of luck Wilfred (yeah, I named him) lol.

What is the universal Arabic typeface on computers called?

      Naskh                                                      Source

There are several different types of script, but just a handful of basic ones from which the entire Arabic language stems. For instance, the universal Arabic typeface on computers is technically called Naskh.        Source

Naskh (Arabic: also known as Naskhi or by its Turkish name Nesih) is a specific calligraphic style for writing in the Arabic alphabet, thought to be invented by the calligrapher Ibn Muqlah Shirazi. The root of this Arabic term nasakha means "to copy". It either refers to the fact that it replaced its predecessor, Kufic script, or that this style allows faster copying of texts. With small modifications, it is the style most commonly used for printing Arabic, Persian, Pashto and Sindhi languages.

Computers typically use Naskh or a Naskh-like script.        Source

See, we knew how to splice, knot, bend lines and hawsers; cut, sew and fashion canvas articles small and large (by hand and industrial sewing machines), rig block and tackles and use them etc, but... nothing to the extent that those guys did. Which is why one of most desirable and difficult billets to obtain for a CG Boatswain's Mate is aboard the cutter "Eagle"...

Stance Nets Donation Windfall

Wendy Davis

Texas state Senator Wendy Davis has reaped nearly $1 million in political donations since she staged a nearly 11-hour filibuster that ultimately failed to stop the Texas legislature approving stringent new restrictions on abortion in the state, her office said on Monday.

Davis, 50, who is running for re-election to the state Senate in 2014 and has been called upon by some fellow Democrats to run for Texas governor, raised $933,000 in two weeks and now has more than $1 million in her campaign coffers, her campaign said.

With her filibuster last month, Davis drew national attention to the debate over a Texas bill that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, impose strict new health and safety standards on abortion clinics and limit use of the RU-486 drug to end pregnancies.

Texas campaign finance reports, due by midnight Monday for fundraising in the first six months of the year, show that Davis has a large following in Texas as well as outside the state. She received donations from 15,290 contributors, her campaign said.

The report shows Davis raised $580,000 from Texas contributors and the balance of $353,000 from out-of-state donors. The majority of the funds were raised in the period after she staged the filibuster.

Gives Massive Online Boost To Syfy

'Sharknado'

The Syfy original movie "Sharknado" became a social media sensation this past week with its premiere on Thursday. And perhaps not surprisingly, it also considerably upped the online profiles of the network that aired it and the actors who starred in it

According to content marketing and insights company Kontera, consumption of content items - videos, social posts, etc - revolving around Syfy grew 220.49 percent from July 10, the day before the "Sharknado" premiere, and July 11, when the movie aired.

"Sharknado" star Tara Reid also fared well; consumption of content involving the "American Pie" star jumped 177.55 percent in the same period.

During its airing, "Sharknado" generated 387,000 social mentions - 97 percent of which were generated by Twitter, with the hashtags #sharknado and #syfy - besting competing shows "Big Brother" and "The Big Bang Theory." "Sharknado" also came within 2,500 tweets of the "The Rains of Castamere" episode - aka, the "Red Wedding" episode - of HBO's "Game of Thrones," which was a hot topic of online discussion when it aired in June.

At its peak, "Sharknado" generated almost 5,000 tweets a minute during its airing.

Dave Matthews

A fan on her way to a Dave Matthews concert pulled over to help a stranded bicyclist, who turned out to be none other than the singer himself.

Emily Kraus and her boyfriend pulled over Saturday to give a ride to a man whose bike had broken down, she told WHP-TV in Harrisburg. They realized it was Matthews, who didn't have a cellphone on him to call for help. They helped him stow his bicycle on their bike rack, and he got in their car for the rest of the ride.

"We didn't know how to make conversation with him, in fact, so we were talking about his tour and where he had come from," Kraus said. "He had just been in Cincinnati and he said, 'I'm taking a short break after this one because I have to drop my daughters off at camp.' ... He was just a very humble guy."

He invited them to dinner, took them backstage and got them front-row seats. Kraus said she woke up the next morning still amazed at what had happened.

Says TV Station Damaged Reputation

Asiana

Asiana Airlines said Sunday its reputation was damaged by a report on a San Francisco TV station that used bogus and racially offensive names for four pilots on its plane that crashed earlier this month and is considering legal action.

An anchor for KTVU-TV read the names on the air Friday and then apologized after a break. The report was accompanied by a graphic with the phony names listed alongside a photo of the burned out plane. Video of the report has spread widely across the Internet since it was broadcast.

An Asiana statement said it's mulling legal measures against both KTVU-TV and the NTSB because the report "badly damaged" the reputation of the airline and its pilots.

It didn't say what legal measures it was considering.

Fired Intern

NTSB

Well, there's that. The National Transportation Safety Board intern who confirmed four fake, (racist!) names as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214 has been let go .

The intern prompted an apology from the NTSB on Friday after it turned out he or she confirmed the fake names in response to a media query from KTVU. The California TV station then went on-air with the "confirmed" names, which were, well, pretty obviously made up and offensive.

On Sunday, Asiana Airlines indicated that they were considering legal action against KTVU in response to the incident, which the airline says has "badly damaged" its reputation. While it looked like the airline was originally considering legal action against the NTSB, they've decided to file a suit against KTVU only, according to a statement on Monday from an airline spokesperson to CNN: "After a legal review, the company decided to file a lawsuit against the network because it was their report that resulted in damaging the company's image."

It's still not clear where the names came from, though the San Francisco Chronicle notes that they probably originated at the station - the (ex) NTSB intern, who shouldn't have been making statements on behalf of the agency anyway, reportedly confirmed the names in response to a question from a news outlet.

Charges Unlikely

Rupert

The recall of Rupert Murdoch (R-Evil Incarnate) to a committee of the British parliament over a secret tape of him dismissing the alleged illegal behaviour of his journalists is likely to cause personal embarrassment for the world's most famous media mogul but no criminal charges.

It could, however, further complicate his business dealings in Britain, where his firm has long wanted to take full control of the pay-TV group BSkyB and where it is still locked in negotiations with the government over regulation of the press.

The 82-year-old head of News Corp and 21st Century Fox has been recalled to appear before lawmakers in London - the scene two years ago of what he called his "most humble day" - to explain his recorded comments that British tabloid newspapers had for decades paid bribes to police for information. No date has yet been set for the committee hearing.

Murdoch also said in the tape, covertly recorded during his meeting with News Corp's Sun journalists in March, that he had been wrong to give so much help to the police as they probed a phone-hacking scandal that engulfed his British newspaper business, and that he would, at the right time, hit back.

The sound of Murdoch railing against the police and dismissing the payment of bribes as "next to nothing" stands in stark contrast to the image he had previously presented.

Probation Revoked

Chris Brown

A judge revoked Chris Brown's probation on Monday after reviewing the details of an alleged hit-and-run accident involving the singer and his behavior afterward. However, the singer was not ordered to jail.

Brown, who came to court with a group of family members, appeared downcast as he sat with his arms across his chest and his head down on the counsel table while his lawyer and a prosecutor went to the judge's chambers to discuss the case.

Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, suggested that perhaps the matter will be resolved informally without a major probation hearing. He said the hit-and-run case would be back in court in Van Nuys on July 23.

Deputy District Attorney Mary Murray did not ask for Brown to be jailed, and the judge allowed him to remain free on his own recognizance.

Producers Sue Texas

'Machete'

The producers of "Machete" are seeking vengeance against Texas, saying film commission officials unlawfully yanked the sequel's tax incentives when they decided - after the film wrapped production - that it cast the state in a bad light.

"Machete's" production company Chop Shop, Inc., filed the lawsuit in Texas late last week, asking the court to void the Texas Film Commission's decision. The potential amount of the credit wasn't disclosed, but Chop Shop says it spent more than $8 million in the state, which it wouldn't have done without the promise of a kickback (Texas offers up to 17.5% return on spending and max 29.25% on wages paid).

In a twist of irony, Gov. Rick Perry signed the Texas Film Incentive bill in 2009 at Troublemaker Studios, where founder and "Machete" producer Robert Rodriguez announced it would enable him to make movies - including "Machete" - in the state.

"Machete" was greenlit for the incentive months later, including script approval, and production got under way. But after a trailer hit on Cinco de Mayo 2010 - showing Machete targeting a state senator bent on deporting undocumented immigrants - anti-immigration activists inundated the film commission with angry correspondence, according to the lawsuit.

Film commission director Bob Hudgins resigned November 30, and the very next day, the deputy director pulled the plug on funding - and the lawsuit suggests Perry was directly involved in that decision.

Activists Occupy French Nuke Plant

Greenpeace

Greenpeace activists occupied a French nuclear power plant site before dawn Monday - a media stunt deeply embarrassing to the government, which is intent on demonstrating that France's reliance on nuclear power is safe.

Around 30 activists from the environmental group invaded state-owned nuclear power utility Electricite de France's Tricastin power plant complex in southern France. They projected a video on the side of one of the plant's buildings that said "Tricastin Nuclear Accident" and showed the image of a giant crack forming across the building's facade.

By mid-afternoon, all of the activists had been arrested and were being held in a nearby police station, Greenpeace France said on its web site.

France is among the most nuclear-dependent countries in the world, with reactors producing about 80 percent of its electricity.

In 2008, the Tricastin plant reported several incidents that angered anti-nuclear groups, including a leak of unenriched uranium into two nearby rivers and the release of radioactive particles from a pipe.

The Queen's Swan Marker David Barber (2L) and other Swan Uppers inspect swans and cygnets during the annual Swan Upping ceremony on the River Thames between Shepperton and Windsor in southern England July 15, 2013. Young cygnets are counted and swans and cygnets are assessed for signs of injury or disease during the ceremony. The five-day census of the swan population dates back to the twelfth century when the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans. Today, the Crown retains the right to ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water, but The Queen only exercises her ownership on certain stretches of the River Thames and its surrounding tributaries.

Court Rules For Indians

Chile

A Chilean appeals court ruled against the world's largest gold mining company on Monday, favoring Chilean Indians who accuse Barrick Gold Corp. of contaminating their water downstream and creating more doubts about the future of the world's highest gold mine.

The judges in the northern city of Copiapo unanimously ruled that Barrick must keep all its environmental promises before moving forward with construction of the Pascua-Lama mine at the very top of Chile's mountainous border with Argentina. They also said Barrick must monitor the condition of three glaciers next to the mine project.

Chile's environmental watchdog agency already ordered construction stopped until Barrick builds systems to keep the mine from contaminating the watershed below, and Barrick executives have publicly committed the company to fulfilling the requirements of its environmental permit.

But Monday's ruling goes beyond that by demanding repairs to damage in the watershed below, by calling for increased monitoring of the impact on surrounding glaciers, and by opening up the project's environmental license for review. The judges found no evidence of contamination due to mine construction, but said the watershed could face "imminent danger" without more environmental protections.
