Trivia Question of the Day

A watermark-like station logo that most television broadcasters overlay over a portion of the screen area of their programs to identify the channel is known in the UK and New Zealand by the acronym DOG (digital on-screen graphic). What is it called in the US (and Canada, Ireland, and Australia)?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

What is the easternmost state capital in the US?

       Augusta, Maine                                                      Source

Augusta is the capital of the U.S. state of Maine and the county seat of Kennebec County.

The city's population was 19,136 at the 2010 census, making it the third-smallest state capital (after Montpelier, Vermont and Pierre, South Dakota) and the ninth-largest city in Maine. Located on the Kennebec River at the head of tide, Augusta is home to the University of Maine at Augusta.

Augusta is located at 44°18?26?N 69°46?54?W, making it the easternmost state capital in the United States. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 58.03 square miles (150.30 km2), of which 55.13 square miles (142.79 km2) is land and 2.90 square miles (7.51 km2) is water.[3] Augusta is drained by Bond's Brook, Woromontogus Stream and the Kennebec River.        Source

   Marty, I had a suspicion on this question, so I checked the location, and my suspicions are proven correct - the easternmost state capitol in the United States is Augusta, Maine.
  I look forward to the day when the evil and insipid Paul LePage leaves office as Governor of Maine - preferably through resignation of impeachment.

  Augusta, Maine... which is about 35 miles by winding road from where I was stationed in Rockland (the Lobster Capital of the World, they claim) on beautiful Penobscot Bay... That area of Maine is referred to by Mainers as 'Midcoast' which is what it is as you look upon a map. The middle of Maine's coastline... Artsy Camden, of 'Peyton Place' fame, is 5 miles north of Rockland.

~~~~~
  This is as far 'Down East' as one can get... the easternmost point in he US...
  West Quoddy Head... That's Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, you see...
  The Coast Guard automated the Light in '88 and I served with its last 'Keeper' 4 years previously in Rockland...
  Here is the Light that I was, oh too briefly, 'Keeper' of in Maine...
  Whitehead Island Light and Fog Signal Station at the westernmost point of Penobscot Bay... and also marks the entrance to the Muscle Ridge Channel which runs up the coastline... It was automated in '82 just after I went back to running CG Motor Lifeboats out of Rockland...
  The Muscle Ridge, Whitehead Island at near bottom left... It's dicey in the fog. Ya better know what you're about, I'm tellin' ya...
~~~~~

  All lighthouses in the US are automated now... I kinda like being one of the last of the Lighthouse Keepers... and I'm here to tell ya that there was no sweeter duty in the CG than that.

~~~~~
  Oh, and Whitehead Light is haunted, too, which was kinda interesting. Loud clanks coming from the otherwise quiet emergency generator house at night(the brick building in front). Basement doors found open and lights turned on in the morning after having been secured the late afternoon before (I didn't go down there at night - during the day it was cool, though). That was about it...
  Like I said, interesting... and one of the reasons I love Maine.
Early morning fog mutes the color of cherry blossoms on Washington's famous cherry trees surrounding the Tidal Basin near the Jefferson Memorial, Monday, March 27, 2017. This year's bloom was different from in the past because cold weather killed half of the blossoms on the Yoshino cherry trees just as they were reaching their peak. The National Park Service says on its website that peak bloom was reached Saturday, March 25, 2017.
Least-Approved New President In History
T-rump
President Donald Trump's (R-Crooked) first 60 days in the White House have been the least-approved of any new president in American history, the latest Gallup tracking poll released Saturday revealed. The new president may well be on his way to continuing record-low ratings throughout his first 100 days in Washington, D.C., as scores of people across the globe were betting on him to be impeached or removed from office in his first term.
Incoming approval ratings collected by Gallup since former President Dwight Eisenhower showed new presidents typically enjoy a honeymoon phase, in which the majority of the public largely approved of their initial days in office.
Trump's first months as commander-in-chief have been mired in controversy, however, surrounding several failed campaign promises, his administration's ties to the Russian Kremlin and politically divisive items on his to-do list, like building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border projected to cost $20 billion.
Just 40 percent of those polled in Gallup's latest approval ratings supported Trump's first 60 days in office, compared to 54 percent of total disapproval. And it may only be downhill from there: almost every president since former President Harry Truman faced large dips in approval throughout their first year in office.
Archaeologists Reconstruct Face
Medieval Man
The face of a British man who died about 700 years ago has been brought to life using reconstructive technology.
The medieval man was buried along with hundreds of others in a graveyard underneath what is now the Old Divinity School building of St. John's College at the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom. By studying his remains and piecing together his facial features and biological history, archeologists said they hope to understand the lives of anonymous poor people in the 13th century.
"Most historical records are about well-off people and especially their financial and legal transactions," study lead researcher John Robb, a professor of archaeology at the University of Cambridge, said in a statement. "The less money and property you had, the less likely anybody was to ever write down anything about you. So, skeletons like this are really our chance to learn about how the ordinary poor lived."
Most of the skeletons found beneath St. John's were of impoverished adults. Their burials ranged from the 13th to 15th centuries, when the graveyard was attached to a hospital and charitable foundation for the poor and infirm, according to the researchers.
Scientists studied the skeleton of one man, dubbed Context 958, in more detail. Measuring the man's pelvic bones helped the archaeologists conclude that the medieval man was over age 40 when he died. Analyzing the jaw, cheekbones and skull also helped the researchers estimate Context 958's facial structure. And peering into his backbone revealed that he had participated in hard labor, leading to herniated vertebrae and possible chronic back pain.
Gold Coin Stolen From Berlin Museum
"Big Maple Leaf"
A Canadian gold coin named "Big Maple Leaf" which bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II was stolen in the early hours of Monday morning from Berlin's Bode Museum.
The coin is made out of pure gold, weighs about 100 kilos and has a face value of around $1 million.
Given the high purity of the gold used in the coin, its material value is estimated to be $4 million.
The museum said on its website that the coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2007 and that it was featured in the Guinness Book of Records for its "unmatched" degree of purity.
The coin, with a diameter of 53 centimeters and 3 centimeters thick, was loaned to the Bode Museum in December 2010.
Waistcoat Fails To Sell At Auction
Captain James Cook
A waistcoat owned by British explorer Captain James Cook, who claimed Australia for Britain in 1770, has failed to sell at auction, with bids far below its anticipated million dollar price tag, the auction house said on Monday.
The 250-year-old waistcoast was passed in at A$575,000 ($438,035.00) at Sunday's auction in Sydney, after being valued between A$800,000 and A$1.1 million. Aalders Auctions said the highest bidder, a local, was now in negotiation with the owner.
The auctioneer said Cook's family kept the waistcoat in the United Kingdom after the explorer's death from a knife wound in Hawaii in 1779.
In 1912 a British industrialist bought the waistcoat from an antique dealer and gave it to a prominent Sydney pianist, Ruby Rich, who had the garment altered to fit a woman, Aalders said. Unfortunately, the auctioneer said, Rich wore the garment to many social gatherings and spilt wine on it.
US Leads Boycott Of Talks
Nuclear Weapons
More than 100 countries on Monday launched the first UN talks aimed at achieving a legally binding ban on nuclear weapons, as Washington led an international boycott of a process it deems unrealistic.
Before the conference had even begun, the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley (R-Sock Puppet), spoke out to reject the proposal in the light of current global security threats.
"As a mom and a daughter there is nothing I want more for my family than a world with no nuclear weapons," Haley, who represents the world's largest nuclear power, said on the sidelines of the meeting.
"But we have to be realistic," she added. "Is there anyone that believes that North Korea would agree to a ban on nuclear weapons?"
Haley spoke in a group of some 20 ambassadors from US allies which are boycotting the negotiations, including Britain, France, South Korea, Turkey and a number of countries from eastern Europe.
Pink Panty Sheriff
Arpaio
For nine years, Joe Arpaio (R-Racist) enjoyed solid popularity as the sheriff of metro Phoenix by locking up immigrants in the U.S. illegally and regularly telling news reporters that no one would stop his crackdowns.
The former lawman who made his fight against illegal immigration a fixture of his speeches and media interviews during his last three campaigns asked a judge on Friday to prohibit prosecutors from mentioning those statements at his April 25 trial on a criminal contempt-of-court charge.
Arpaio, who was defeated last November after 24 years as sheriff for sprawling Maricopa County that encompasses Phoenix, faces the misdemeanor charge for disobeying a court order to halt his immigration patrols, which continued for 17 months after a judge issued the order.
To win a conviction, prosecutors must prove that Arpaio intended to violate the judge's order. The 84-year-old Arpaio, who would face up to six months in jail if convicted, has acknowledged prolonging the patrols, but insists he did so unintentionally.
He characterized campaign speeches as political posturing aimed at winning votes, saying Arpaio made the statements during his political races to bolster his reputation for being tough on illegal immigration.
Bill Targets Transgender People
Arkansa
An Arkansas lawmaker wants to expand the state's indecent exposure law in a move that opponents say could criminalize transgender people's use of bathrooms.
Republican Rep. Bob Ballinger's proposal would make it a crime for people to knowingly expose their sex organs to someone of the opposite sex in a public place under circumstances likely to cause alarm. Ballinger said the measure was needed to protect children in situations such as when a father takes his daughter into the men's restroom. The bill would make it a crime for the men to deliberately expose themselves to the child.
But American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas legal director Holly Dickson says laws already are in place to address people acting with criminal intent in public restrooms. Dickson says Ballinger's bill is just a way to make it a crime for transgender people to use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity.
"This bill is intimidating. It can lead to increased harassment. It will chill transgender people's participation in public life," Dickson said.
She noted the impact statement attached to the proposed measure, which says there were only seven convictions for violations of Arkansas' current indecent exposure law from 2013 to 2015.
Ancient Rock Carvings Depicting Masked People Discovered
Egypt
Before King Tut, Hatshepsut or Ramesses I - in fact, before there were any pharaohs at all - someone pecked an image of a hunter and a dancer wearing an ostrich mask into a rock on a hill along the Nile River.
The image, discovered recently by archaeologists, provides a tantalizing glimpse of Egypt's Neolithic period, or Stone Age. It likely dates back to the latter half of the fourth millennium B.C., said Ludwig Morenz, an Egyptologist at the University of Bonn in Germany. The depiction of a masked dancer in this era is particularly fascinating, Morenz told Live Science.
"[In] ancient Egyptian culture, we know many, many masks, but they are basically all masks for the dead," Morenz said. "And here we have a mask culture which predates pharaonic culture."
An ancient necropolis The ancient find sits on Qubbet el-Hawa, the Hill of the Wind, near Aswan. In the pharaonic era, this was near the southern border of Egypt, and it was the site of a necropolis for the nobles of the ancient city of Elephantine, which was on the island of Elephantine in the Nile.
The necropolis was used from about 2200 B.C. onward, Morenz said, and it likely had nothing to do with the Neolithic use of the site; rather, this stretch of the Nile likely appealed to both Stone Age and later people because it is a relatively shallow stretch of rapids, called a cataract, with an island and easy pullouts for boaters.
'Unparalleled' Number Of Dinosaur Tracks Found
Australia
An "unprecedented" 21 different types of dinosaur tracks have been found on a stretch of Australia's remote coastline, scientists said Monday, dubbing it the nation's Jurassic Park.
Palaeontologists from the University of Queensland and James Cook University said it was the most diverse such discovery in the world, unearthed in rocks up to 140 millions years old in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
Steve Salisbury, lead author of a paper on the findings published in the Memoir of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, said the tracks were "globally unparalleled".
"It is extremely significant, forming the primary record of non-avian dinosaurs in the western half of the continent and providing the only glimpse of Australia's dinosaur fauna during the first half of the Early Cretaceous Period," he said.
It was almost lost, with the Western Australian government in 2008 selecting the area as the preferred site for a massive liquid natural gas processing precinct.
