Andrew Toibias: AYERS / KEATING (andrewtobias.com)
The McCain/Palin team have decided to take the campaign negative, suggesting Senator Obama's love for his country is suspect when he consort with terrorists. The "terrorists" referred to are a guy named Bill Ayers who, in his efforts to stop the Vietnam War, did a really terrible thing - 40 years ago, when Obama was 8 years old - which Senator Obama has publicly deplored, and which, just for the record, I deplore, too.

Erica Grossman: The zen of Zinn (boulderweekly.com)
The people's historian Howard Zinn has hope for America's future.

Andrew Tobias: Prongs (andrewtobias.com)
As no one knows the timing or order of events - deflation, inflation, stagflation, prosperity - the best asset-deployment strategy, for those who have the luxury of assets to deploy (but also the burden and angst of trying to figure out how to deploy them), is the simple-minded "four prong" strategy I have been suggesting since long before there was an Internet.

THE SWEDES HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT AMERICAN LITERATURE.

I'll put on my Hollywood hat just for a moment so I can lead a chorus of righteous laughter at the colossal failure of the persecuted Hollywood conservatives behind An American Carol.

Jonathan Greenblatt: Paul Newman Inspired a Generation of Entrepreneurs
The accidental entrepreneur blazed the trail for Ben and Jerry's, Stonyfield Farms, and other socially responsible businesses.

Donald Liebenson: "Paul Newman: No Autographs, Please" (huffingtonpost.com)
Paul Newman said that he remembered the instant he stopped signing autographs. "I was standing at a urinal in Sardi's," he recalled, "and this guy came though the door with a piece of paper."

Caitlin Moran: "Tina Fey and Sarah Silverman: the new queens of comedy" (timesonline.co.uk)
Too fragile to be funny? No way - the two most hilarious comics in the world are women. The world of comedy is in flux.

Barry Koltnow: George Lopez hardly leads a dog's life (The Orange County Register)
"America's Mexican," as George Lopez referred to himself in his 2007 HBO comedy special, knows he's made it big.

Shaun Brady: "Simon Says: An interview with Simon Pegg" (citypaper.net)
Toby Young as described by Toby Young in his memoir How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is an insufferable prick. Even when he's self-deprecatingly referring to his past self as an insufferable prick, his narrative voice still comes off as insufferable prick. But that wasn't the Toby Young that Simon Pegg met when he sat down with the writer he was set to portray on screen.

R. Uri used to study scripture until late at night, and then rise late in the morning. Once he was asked why he didn't go to bed early and then rise early the next morning to study sacred scripture. He replied, "How do I know that I will rise the next morning?"

Trivia Questions from Yesterday

How many presidents have remarried while in the White House?

Since the beginning of the 20th century, how many presidents never attended college?

Which college has the second most presidents as alumni?

How many presidents won the popular vote but lost the presidency in the 19th century?

Five presidents remarried after the death of their first wives-two of whom, Tyler and Wilson, remarried while in the White House.          Source

Nine presidents never attended college: Washington, Jackson, Van Buren, Taylor, Fillmore, Lincoln, A. Johnson, Cleveland, and Truman. Truman is the only one in the 20th century.          Source

Harvard is first with 6, and Yale is second with five presidents as alumni: Taft, Ford (law school), G.H.W. Bush, Clinton (law school), and G. W. Bush.          Source

Four presidents won the popular vote but lost the presidency, with 3 of them in the 19th century: Andrew Jackson won the popular vote but lost the election to John Quincy Adams (1824); Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote but lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes (1876); Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the election to Benjamin Harrison (1888).          Source

Alan J was first, and correct, with:
   1. 2
  2. 1
  3. Harvard with 6
  4. 3

vb nailed it with:
#1. How many presidents have remarried while in the White House? Tyler and Wilson
#2 Since the beginning of the 20th century, how many presidents never attended college? 1 - Harry S. Truman #3 Which college has the second most presidents as alumni? - Yale is second, with five presidents as alumni: Taft, Ford (law school), G.H.W. Bush, Clinton (law school), and G. W. Bush.
#4 How many presidents won the popular vote but lost the presidency in the 19th century? - 3
John Quincy Adams 1824 (elected by Congress) over Andrew Jackson
Rutherford B Hayes 1876 (declared the Electoral College winner by an Electoral Commission) over Samuel J Tilden
Benjamin Harrison 1888 over Grover Cleveland

Charlie who isn't playing nailed it:
Not playing for keeps now, but here goes.
This is all from the here, which I linked to for round 1.
How many presidents have remarried while in the White House?
Two: John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson
Since the beginning of the 20th century, how many presidents never attended college?
One: Harry Truman, who did, however, study law, at what is now considered a college, though not when he was there.
Which college has the second most presidents as alumni?
Yale: Taft, Ford, G.H.W. Bush, Clinton, and G. W. Bush.
That last one says something about family connections, one suspects.
How many presidents won the popular vote but lost the presidency in the 19th century?
Depending on how one interprets the question, the answer is either one or two. If one means a sitting president, the answer is one (Cleveland). If Jackson counts because he won next time, the answer is two. If one includes Tilden, of course, the answer is three, but that doesn't seem legitimate, even though the site includes him in the count.
Andrew Jackson lost to John Quincy Adams (Jackson won next time)
Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost to Benjamin Harrison.
Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote but lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes, but since Tilden was never president, he doesn't really count.

Jim from CA responded rightly:
   1. 2 presidents remarried while in the white house
  2. Harry S. Truman
  3. Yale
  4. 4 presidents have won the popular vote and lost but only 3 did it in the 19th century.

Chuck got it right:
How many presidents have remarried while in the White House? Two John Tyler (1841-45) and Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921)
Since the beginning of the 20th century, how many presidents never attended college? One Harry S. Truman
Which college has the second most presidents as alumni? Yale
How many presidents won the popular vote but lost the presidency in the 19th century? Three Andrew Jackson, Samuel J. Tilden, and Grover Cleveland

Sally nailed it, too:
   Here's my best shot:
  1) How many presidents have remarried while in the White House?
     A) 2 - John Tyler (1844) and Woodrow Wilson (1915)
  2) Since the beginning of the 20th century, how many presidents never attended college?
     A) 1 - Harry S Truman
  3) Which college has the second most presidents as alumni?
     A) Yale - 5
How many presidents won the popular vote but lost the presidency in the 19th century?
     A) I think this could be a trick question as the persons who lose are merely "candidates." but, giving you the benefit of the doubt (I'm SUCH a good woman) I will say that 3 men in the 19th century have won the popular vote but lost the Office of President. They are: Andrew Jackson, in 1824 (lost to John Q Adams); Samuel Tilden in 1876 (lost to Rutherford Hayes) Grover Cleveland in 1888 (lost to Benjamin Harrison)
We shall not count Al Gore, who not only won the popular vote, but had the election STOLEN from in the last month of the first year of the Twenty First Century by a despot who has ruined our country - but that's for another day...
PS: Why am I not surprised that the Professor was one of the first to win? Kudos to the top 4 - outstanding job!

Joe S (~John, please -- once and for all, I'm not your friend dammit! You have no friends.) wrote:
I've decided to sit this one out. Mostly because those questions look really, really hard and I would only be playing for pride. It doesn't pay to be too proud.

And Marian the Teacher answered:
   2, 1, yale and 1.!
   fourth answer is 2.

First Presidential Endorsement - Ever

Esquire Magazine

Esquire is backing Democrat Barack Obama for president - its first endorsement in the magazine's 75-year history.

The Illinois senator is "the only possible choice to lead the country," editors wrote in the November issue, on newsstands Oct. 14. Republican presidential nominee John McCain has run a "cheap and dishonourable campaign," they said.

And his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is "stunningly unqualified."

The editors said "Bushism must be ripped out, root and branch, everywhere it has been established, or else the presidential election of 2008 is a worthless exercise in futility."

"The best argument for the election of Barack Obama as president of the United States is written quite clearly in the peaks and squiggles of John Paul Stevens' EKG," they wrote of the 88-year-old justice.

Tells McBush To Stop Using Song

Foo Fighters

Yet another band is complaining about John McCain's use of their song to promote his campaign. This time, it's the Foo Fighters.

The rockers sent out a missive telling the Republican presidential candidate to stop using "My Hero." They said they learned it was being use through news reports.

"The saddest thing about this is that `My Hero' was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential," the band said in a statement. "To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song."

The band noted it's not the first time McCain has been told to stop using a song. John Mellencamp, Heart and Jackson Browne have also complained - Browne even filed a lawsuit.

Pleads Not Guilty

David Kernell

The son of a Democratic Tennessee state lawmaker pleaded not guilty Wednesday to hacking the e-mail account of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

David Kernell, 20, of Knoxville, Tenn. entered the plea in federal court in Knoxville, the same day prosecutors unsealed an indictment charging him with intentionally accessing Palin's e-mail account without authorization.

Kernell, an economics student at the University of Tennessee, was brought into court wearing handcuffs and shackles on his ankles.

He was released without posting bond, but the court limited his computer use to checking his own e-mail and doing class work.

CBS' 'Fraud' Hurt Income

Dan Rather

Dan Rather could have made millions of dollars more per year if CBS had not defrauded him before firing him, his lawyer said Tuesday.

Martin Gold discussed the finances after a hearing on Rather's ongoing $70 million breach-of-contract lawsuit. Rather says he was removed from the evening news anchor chair and given little to do after a disputed September 2004 "60 Minutes II" story about resident Bush's military service.

Gold said the network was supposed to use Rather on other news shows or pay him and let him go.

Gold said CBS held on to the 77-year-old newsman and denied him a chance to take a $4 million-a-year job at another network. The lawyer said Rather now earns about $1.5 million at the high-definition TV network HDNet.

Duo Sets Record

57 Films

Suresh Joachim of Toronto, and Claudia Wavra of Germany, claim to have broken the world record for continuous movie watching, after seeing 57 films in 123 hours in a plastic-glass house in New York's Times Square.

A Guinness World Records spokesman said it appears the non-dynamic duo have broken the record but said it will take two weeks to officially verify.

The attempt began Oct. 2 when eight challengers started watching "Iron Man." After 72 hours, only two remained. They watched "Thelma and Louise" until the end on 3:10 p.m. Tuesday.

The rules: Each movie had to be viewed until the last credit rolled, and competitors couldn't divert their eyes from the screen. They were allowed 10-minute breaks between movies.

Paris Auction

Jacques Brel

The handwritten lyrics to one of singer Jacques Brel's most melancholic songs, "Amsterdam", fetched more than 108,000 euros (148,000 dollars) at a Paris auction on Wednesday.

The records, old photographs, guitars and other items that once belonged to the Belgian-born singer were from the private collection of an anomymous seller.

Reports said they were recovered from the Riviera home Brel shared with Sylvie Riget, one of his many mistresses, and were split between her nieces and nephews following her death.

Brel's widow and three daughters, who hold full rights to his work, opposed the sale and had offered to buy up the entire collection for 175,000 euros.

Drops Suit

Yoko Ono

John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono and EMI Records, the world's fourth largest music company, dropped copyright infringement lawsuits against the makers of a documentary that used the portion of the song "Imagine" without permission.

The dismissal follows unsuccessful attempts by Yoko Ono in federal court and EMI Records in state court to enjoin Premise Media Corp's documentary, "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed," because it uses a 15-second clip of the song.

"We think it was clear from the beginning that our clients had every right to use the 'Imagine' clip as they did, and we're happy we've vindicated that right," Anthony Falzone, a Stanford law professor and lead counsel for Premise in the case said in a statement.

The documentary looks at alleged discrimination against scientists and teachers who support so-called intelligent design as an alternative to Darwin's theory of evolution.

Right Wing Whine Machine

Cyrus Nowrasteh

Cyrus Nowrasteh wrote the ABC miniseries "The Path to 9/11," but in a new documentary he scolds the network and its parent company for allowing powerful politicians to effectively censor the show.

And therein lies a main premise of "Blocking the Path to 9/11," the straight-to-DVD movie that hits Blockbuster, Best Buy, Netflix and Amazon.com on Tuesday, and is also available for $19.95 from the movie's Web site: Why is a documentary about a popular ABC miniseries hitting store shelves while the miniseries itself is unavailable on DVD?

The documentary was bankrolled by Citizens United, a conservative nonprofit group run by David Bossie, a former chief investigator into Clinton's alleged involvement in the Whitewater scandal.

The documentary not only goes after Disney, ABC, Iger, Olbermann and Clinton but also one of the stars of the miniseries: Harvey Keitel, shown bashing the miniseries and complaining that he was tricked into playing his role.

Rejects Plea Deal

Britney Spears

An attorney for Britney Spears has rejected a plea offer that would have placed her on a year's probation and forced her to pay a $150 fine in her misdemeanor driver's license case.

Attorney J. Michael Flanagan says Spears would consider an offer that reduces the charge to an infraction and requires her to pay a $10 fine. He says if the case does go to trial as scheduled later this month, he will appeal any conviction.

He says the 26-year-old singer is being unfairly targeted because she is a celebrity and doesn't deserve a blemish on her criminal record.

Writers Guild Warns

The Osbournes

The Writers Guild of America on Wednesday warned its members not to work on Ozzy Osbourne's new comedy-variety show at Fox.

The union says the show's producer, FremantleMedia North America, offered a "sub-standard contract" asking that writers be treated as if they were working on "half-scripted" shows, which would greatly reduce their writing fees.

The writing on the show, which has a working title of "The Osbournes: Loud and Dangerous," would traditionally be covered under the guild's basic agreement, used in the past for such shows as "The Carol Burnett Show" and "Laugh-In," the WGA said.

While some shows produced by Fremantle have been covered by the guild contract, many others, including "American Idol" and "The Price Is Right," are not. Over the summer, the WGA went on a bus tour, dubbed the American Idol Truth Tour, which followed the show's auditions all over the U.S. and Puerto Rico, talking with the public about what it claims are substandard working conditions for writers and other behind-the-scenes employees.

Another Republican 'Youthful Indiscretion'

Lee W. Dubois

A former Army contractor pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing nearly $40 million worth of jet and diesel fuel from a U.S. Army base in Iraq and selling it on the black market.

Lee W. Dubois, 32, of Lexington, S.C., faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced on a single count of theft of government property. He also will be required to pay restitution.

Dubois had been a captain in the Army dealing with contract issues until he took a job in September 2007 with Kuwait-based Future Services General Trading and Contracting Co.

In a plea hearing in U.S. District Court, Dubois admitted he and others used false paperwork to draw more than 10 million gallons of fuel from Camp Liberty in Baghdad between October 2007 and May.

Settles Suit

NRA

City officials have agreed to return hundreds of firearms that police officers confiscated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, part of a deal to resolve a lawsuit filed by gun lobbying groups.

The settlement agreement filed Tuesday in federal court calls for the National Rifle Association and Second Amendment Foundation to drop their case if the city follows a plan for returning guns to owners who had them seized by police after the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.

Both sides also are asking U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier to sign off on the pact and issue a permanent injunction barring the city from seizing lawfully possessed firearms. Barbier didn't immediately rule on the agreement, which doesn't involve a monetary award.

Must Be The Palin Interpretation

'The Crucible'

A man assigned "The Crucible" in an adult education English class doused his teacher with a nonflammable liquid and threatened to burn her as a witch, police said.

Darin Najor, 20, ran from the classroom after the attack Sept. 11 and was sent for psychiatric evaluation after telling police "he was trying to kill the witch by pouring holy water over her head," Detective Ken Denmark said.

The day before the dousing, Najor had asked the teacher whether she believed in witchcraft, police said. She told him she did not, calling Arthur Miller's play based on the 1692 Salem witch trials a metaphor for unjust persecution.

"The suspect threw his homework papers on the floor and declared it was all blasphemy," Denmark said. "The next day he came up behind her chanting what sounded like religious verses while she was working at her desk."

A fragment of Roman glass dating back to the third century, which is one of thousands of artefacts found on the Vindolanda settlement, by Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, England, Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 which will be going on display at an improved visitors center. The first part of the 1,800-year-old artefact was discovered in 1992 but archaeologists had to wait until last year to uncover the missing second half. Experts said it was amazing that the two pieces had been found 16 years apart and 50m (164 feet) from each other. Andrew Birley, director of excavations for the Vindolanda Trust, said: 'It is a unique piece made by artisans in Cologne and then sold to Roman soldiers.
