In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Pulled down the suitcases to let them air out, but just seeing them freaked the cats. (The cats freak easily.)

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Seminar

'Decision-Making at the White House'

When it came to power in the Clinton White House, key players included people like Al Gore, Madeleine Albright, Janet Reno and Stephanie Streett.

While few might be familiar with Streett, she had an important role as Clinton's director of scheduling. Now she plans to discuss her unique behind-the-scenes view.

Streett and a panel of other former Clinton administration insiders are scheduled to share their thoughts during a Nov. 12 seminar at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

The program, titled, "Decision-Making at the White House: The President's Time," will focus on how a president's time is managed, particularly in a time of crisis.

The Nov. 12 seminar will feature Clinton confidant and counsel Bruce Lindsey, who until now has been virtually silent about his White House experiences.

The panel also will include Maggie Williams, the former chief of staff for the first lady and now the chief of Clinton's office, and former White House chief of staff Thomas F. "Mack" McLarty.

Organizers say the program will be the first in a series of seminars on American presidencies.

Urging Lawmaker Intervention

Musicians & Royalties

A group of musicians including Don Henley and Jennifer Warnes urged California lawmakers to intervene and protect them from what they say are unfair contracts that give recording companies the opportunity to withhold royalties with impunity.

The musicians, whose careers span seven decades, also charged Tuesday that the recording industry systematically underreported sales to reduce royalty payments.

Contracts are "dishonest," "indecipherable" and "laughably one-sided," said Warnes who, despite selling some 30 million albums since 1968, said she didn't receive her first royalty check until 1991.

"There's no penalty for negligent underreporting," said Henley of the Eagles. He said the contracts are the same at any major label so "you can't shop around and get a better deal."

Contracts between a musician and a label stipulate that any failure to pay royalties is not a material breach of contract, said Simon Renshaw, a manger of several music acts with the Beverly Hills-based agency The Firm.

"It's catch me if you can, and then I'll repay you some of the money I stole from you, and then we'll start again. That's the game. It's institutionalized," Renshaw told a joint hearing of the state Senate Committee on Judiciary and the state Senate Select Committee on the Entertainment Industry.

To Visit Mount Airy

Andy Griffith

Andy Griffith is coming back to Mount Airy.

The 76-year-old actor, who brought fabled Mayberry to life on "The Andy Griffith Show," will make a public appearance Oct. 16 for the dedication of a section of U.S. 52 in his honor.

Gov. Mike Easley will be the keynote speaker, with Griffith scheduled to speak afterward.

Griffith's visit comes just three weeks after the 13th annual Mayberry Days, a festival scheduled to run Friday through Sunday that celebrates the characters and spirit of The Andy Griffith Show.

Griffith usually skips Mayberry Days and has been reluctant to make a public appearance in his hometown. The last time was June 1, 1957, when he was greeted with a parade for his movie "No Time For Sergeants."

'Broadcasting's Pulitzer'

Peabody Awards

Now that Conan O'Brien has returned to his "Late Night" lair and Emmymania is over, let's take a look at the other TV award: the Peabody.

It's the one you may not know, at least beyond its offhand designation as "broadcasting's Pulitzer."

It's the one without a big TV show, "and the envelope please" suspense, and the staggering array of categories. (In fact, the Peabody has no fixed categories or even an annual quota of winners.)

Like the Emmy, the Peabody recognizes outstanding achievement in broadcasting and cable TV. But, unlike the Emmy, it also honors achievement in radio and new media like CD-ROMs and the Web, and does it all from an international perspective.

It's the one that, unlike the self-congratulating Emmys, isn't decided by peer voting. Its 15 judges come from diverse backgrounds including industry, the arts, education, journalism and government.

Alive & Well

Jason Mewes

Jason Mewes is alive and well. Mewes, who played the long-haired, drug-loving "Jay" in Kevin Smith's "Clerks," "Mall Rats," "Chasing Amy" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," was reportedly on the lam or even feared dead after his friends told the Chicago Sun-Times they hadn't seen him in 10 months. An arrest warrant had been issued for him after he violated probation on a heroin conviction. But last month, Mewes made an appearance at a film festival in Malibu to promote his new indie movie "RSVP," and he'll host a talent show Oct. 17 at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. "The rumors of his death are greatly exaggerated," chuckled Mewes' agent, Nancy Oeswein. "I just got off the phone with him. He's certainly not in hiding. He just moved to L.A." For some folks, living on the Left Coast is as good as being dead.

To Host Fishing Show

Lech Walesa

Lech Walesa, the founder of the Solidarity labor movement and Poland's former president, has found a new outlet for his opinions — a national television program on fishing.

"I've tried many subjects so I can add one more," Walesa — a keen angler — said Tuesday of the offer from the TV3 station to host the weekly show, which will start next month. Still, he wasn't promising to keep his thoughts on other issues to himself.

The 1983 Nobel Prize winner and former shipyard electrician now keeps busy on the speaking circuit addressing concerns like globalization, and remains a popular draw in the United States. Walesa said he will not be paid for hosting the fishing show.

Schwangau, Germany

Neuschwanstein

Castle Neuschwanstein is surrounded by snow covered trees Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 at Schwangau, Germany, after early snowfalls blanketed the area.

30 years ago this fall I visited Neuschwanstein under the auspices of Pepperdine. Neuschwanstein was built by 'Mad' Lugwig (he was a contemporary of Abraham Lincoln) of Bavaria. It was a glorious autumn day, and the surrounding woods were full of trees with colored leaves. It was also the first time I heard 'Aqualung', and I sorta-kinda remember a breakfast of eggs & hash. : )

Added To Dictionary

Jedi & Klingons

Science fiction's "Jedi" warriors and "Klingon" bad guys have entered the newest edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, along with "asylum seekers," "asymmetrical warfare" and "spin control."

The first new edition in nearly a decade of the short version of the classic word bible will appear Thursday, with 3,500 new entries, from "ass-backwards" to "warp drive."

New slang terms include "get real" and "badass."

There are also 500 new quotations. Among the writers whose literary citations appear for the first time are best sellers Tom Clancy and Nick Hornby, Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding and, inevitably, Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling.

But although new words from science fiction films like Star Wars and Star Trek have made it, words coined for the Harry Potter books are still too new to appear.

Alleged Video Makers Arrested in CA

'Bumfights'

Two men who allegedly paid street people to fight each other as part of the Internet video sensation "Bumfights" have been arrested in San Diego, police said on Tuesday.

The arrests of Las Vegas residents Zachary Bubeck, 24, and Ryan Edward McPherson, 19, followed a three-month probe by the La Mesa Police Department into the "Bumfights" tapes, Lt. Raul Garcia said. La Mesa is a suburb of San Diego.

Police said they were still looking for two other Las Vegas residents, as well as others who may have been involved in the production of "Bumfights."

Producers claim to have sold more than 300,000 copies of "Bumfights" over the Internet for $19.99 each.

"Bumfights, Vol 1" -- touted by its producers as "the fastest-selling independent video" featuring "drunks" and "crackheads" -- shows bedraggled men engaging in fistfights and acts of self-abuse, such as running headlong into steel doors and leaping off bridges.

They are due in court on Oct. 10 for a preliminary hearing.
