In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Spent most of the night trying to watch the rerun of the 'Grammy Awards'. I liked Jon Stewart - he did a pretty good job.

Really liked that 'They Might Be Giants'got some recognition. Also nice to see George Carlin won one, and Steve Martin, too (if you know where to look).

'Dave' sure was playing the 'Soar Like An Eagle' by Calico John (That Wailing Cat), much to his audiences' delight.

Tonight, Thursday, CBS starts its newest exercise in commercial darwinism with 'Survivor: Marquesas', and continues fresh for the rest of the night, with 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' and 'The Agency'.

NBC is also all fresh with 'Friends', the debut of 'Leap Of Faith', 'Will & Grace' (part 1 of 2), 'Just Shoot Me', and 'ER'.

Showing their contempt for their audience, ABC pisses away their first hour of prime time on reruns of 'Whose Line'. It is followed by fresh 'Regis' and 'Prime Time Thursday'. This must be their cheap production values night.

The WB regurgitates 2 episodes of 'Charmed'.

Faux regurgitates 2 hours of reruns, 'Family Guy', 'Family Guy', 'King Of The Hill', and 'Futurama'.

UPN has 'WWF'.

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

Big Dog Watch

Clinton Presidential Center

As presidents go, Bill Clinton was a pack rat.

Until the Clinton Presidential Center opens in 2004, some 100 million documents, 75,000 gifts and artifacts and more than 2 million photographs will be stored in a heavily secured warehouse that was once an Oldsmobile Dealership.

In the meantime, visitors have been able to catch a glimpse of the presidential materials, photographs and gifts from heads of state at a small preview exhibit that ends its three-month run Saturday.

A walk through the exhibit offers a glimpse into more than just Clinton's presidential persona.

There's mention of impeachment alongside a New York Times headline: "Clinton Acquitted Decisively: No Majority For Either Charge."

There's a Gibson guitar signed by B.B. King, a White House formal dining display, a metal sculpture of a University of Arkansas Razorback pig and a Tour de France bike given by Lance Armstrong.

There's a picture of Clinton staring boyishly over Michael Jordan's shoulder as the basketball great autographs a poster.

Clinton said one of his favorite photographs in the exhibit is a shot of himself and former South African President Nelson Mandela at Robben Island, where Mandela was held prisoner for some 20 years.

A photo of Clinton and members of the Irish rock band U2 leaning casually on a desk in the Oval Office has also been a popular item at the exhibit.

'World Wide Fund' vs. 'World Wrestling Federation'

WWF vs. WWF

The World Wrestling Federation failed Wednesday in its latest bid to be allowed to share the trademark WWF initials with the World Wide Fund for Nature.

The Court of Appeal upheld a High Court ruling last year that the environment group was entitled to a court order banning the U.S. wrestling promoter, from breaching an agreement reached between the two organizations in January 1994.

"There have been clear and repeated breaches of the agreement. The Fund is in principle entitled to an injunction to enforce its rights under the agreement." Lord Justice Carnwath said.

Copping To Pitching A Hissy

Russell Crowe

Hollywood tough guy Russell Crowe has admitted he angrily confronted a television producer at the British Academy Film Awards who cut a large chunk of his best actor acceptance speech. New Zealand-born Crowe, in Sydney to promote Wednesday's local premiere of his award-winning DreamWorks SKG movie "A Beautiful Mind," said he had few regrets about the confrontation with BAFTA producer Malcolm Gerrie.

"He's not bruised, he's not battered but I'm quite sure his ears are still ringing," Crowe told reporters at the "Beautiful Mind" premiere.

"I have very little remorse for what I said...though possibly it was a little more passionate in the cold hard light of day than I would have liked it to have been," The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper quoted him as saying Thursday.

Crowe's angry exchange with Gerrie at an after-show party in a London hotel Sunday has been widely reported in British, U.S. and Australian media.

Variety said the show ran late by 30 minutes and editors had to choose between Crowe's speech and Warren Beatty's acceptance of his British Academy of Film & Television Arts fellowship. That decision was made by BBC executives and not Gerrie, it said.

Overseeing Thai Film Re-Edit

Francis Ford Coppola

Hollywood film director Francis Ford Coppola arrived in Thailand to help re-edit an epic film on a 16th century Thai queen, the movie's producers said on Wednesday.

Coppola will be spending about "a week or so" at the production house of the film's director, Prince Chatri Chalerm Yukol, to oversee the re-editing of "Suriyothai" for international audiences.

"Suriyothai," which cost $9.0 million to make, has grossed $11 million since its release here last year. Its gross in Thailand beat previous record-holder "Titanic," which made $4.7 million.

The godfather of directors, Coppola will consult with Chatri Chalerm on suggested revisions to reduce the film's current running time of more than three hours.

Suriyothai was an ancient Thai queen killed riding into battle against neighboring Burma, now known as Myanmar.

Republican Friends?

Ann Richards

Ann Richards, who was governor of Texas until George W. Bush beat her, drew boos when she attacked her nemesis Monday night at the Drama League gala at the Pierre Hotel. Richards took the podium to extol the virtues of our colleague, honoree Liz Smith, who was also serenaded by Elaine Stritch and Kaye Ballard. But Richards - who famously said George Bush the senior "was born with a silver foot in his mouth" - couldn't help making partisan gibes: "They don't know how to count votes in Florida," she said. "Enron is running the Bush administration's energy policy." When some booed, Richards said, "Liz, I didn't know you had so many Republican friends."

Returning To Film

Bob Dylan

Music legend Bob Dylan, buoyed by a resurgence in his career, is in talks to return to the big screen for what would be his first major film role in 15 years, Daily Variety reported in its Wednesday edition.

The movie, a feature drama from production and financing house Intermedia Films, would star 60-year-old Dylan in the role of Jack Fate, a wandering troubadour who is brought out of prison by his former manager for one last concert, Variety said.

Intermedia has been developing the picture, tentatively titled "Masked and Anonymous," for about a year with Larry Charles, who was an executive producer of the long-running NBC sitcom "Mad About You," the entertainment trade paper said.

The film will incorporate some Dylan music but it was unclear whether Dylan will write any new material for the movie, Variety reported.

News of Dylan's negotiations to star in the film coincide with a major career revival for the tireless troubadour. His latest album, "Love and Theft," is up for three Grammy nominations, including album of the year. He won his first Oscar last year, for best original song, with "Things Have Changed" from Paramount Pictures' "Wonder Boys."

'9/11' On CBS

Nextel has agreed to underwrite next month's CBS special on the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center so it will be aired without commercials.

The special, "9/11," features exclusive footage shot from inside the World Trade Center by two French filmmakers on the day of the attacks. The two-hour show will air on Sunday, March 10 at 9 p.m. EST.

CBS and the filmmakers, Gedeon and Jules Naudet, hope that the lack of commercials will draw greater attention to their efforts during the broadcast to encourage contributions to benefit the Uniformed Firefighters Association.

CBS might also have had difficulty selling traditional advertisements during the special because of its emotional content. Some relatives of the attack's victims have criticized the network for scheduling the show.

Actor Robert De Niro is the program's host.

Buying Land In VA

Dave Matthews

Dave Matthews has completed a $5.3 million deal to buy 1,261 of the 7,379 acres that billionaire John W. Kluge donated to the University of Virginia Foundation.

The musician's manager, Coran Capshaw, said Monday in a news release from the university that Matthews plans to preserve agriculture and forest lands on the five farms he purchased, and to emphasize organic farming.

The lead singer of the Dave Matthews Band also has started the process of placing an open-space easement on the farms, Capshaw said. The easements preserve some degree of open space and limit a property's development rights.

The land consists of five adjoining farms just north of Scottsville in southern Albemarle County. Along with homes and cottages, the farms include cattle and storage barns, silos, equipment and grain sheds and a feed complex.

First 15 'James Bond' Movies

TNN, CBS & UPN

Three Viacom Inc.-owned networks -- TNN, CBS and UPN -- have banded together to buy exclusive two-year television rights to the first 15 James Bond motion pictures from MGM.

The parties declined comment on the deal, but industry sources say Viacom will pay $2 million per title, or a total of $30 million for the pact. The titles become available this fall after completing their runs on ABC and on TBS, both of which decided not to renew their deals for the Bond pictures.

It's expected CBS could air occasional Bond mini-marathons or use the films to plug scheduling holes. For UPN, the movies represent a major upgrade from the types of theatricals it had been able to afford in the past.

And for TNN, the deal means another major asset in building a new brand identity.

The ratings of the early Bond movies on ABC in recent weeks have proved disappointing, though for three Saturdays the pictures had to compete with NBC's high-rated primetime coverage of the Salt Lake City Olympics.

ABC had originally planned to schedule the Bond movies in the fourth quarter as backup programming in anticipation of actors and writers strikes, but held them back after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11.

It's Back - Why?

''Big Brother''

CBS said on Tuesday that its "Big Brother" reality series will return for a third helping of voyeurism, in a sign that reports of impending death for the fading reality TV genre may be premature.

CBS, which sparked the reality craze with its popular "Survivor" franchise, said applications are now being accepted for "Big Brother 3," which will be broadcast in the summer.

In announcing the show's return, CBS said the latest edition will feature "new innovations," but did not elaborate.

After a lackluster first outing, CBS introduced a number of changes to make the second "Big Brother" more interesting for viewers. The number of house guests was upped to 12 from 10, and moves were made to make the situation more contentious.

The show was better received by critics the second time around, although total viewership remained about the same.

The decision to bring back the show makes "Big Brother" one of the few reality series to make it to a third edition so far. The fourth rendition of "Survivor," the granddaddy of the genre, will premiere on Thursday.

Honoring Guitarists

Orville H. Gibson Awards

Irish rockers U2 began what should be an kudos-heavy week for them by walking away Tuesday with three prizes at the Orville H. Gibson Awards, honoring guitarists in various musical genres.

U2, a nominee for eight awards at Wednesday night's Grammys, was named best guitar band, while the Edge took home the Gibson for best rock guitarist and Adam Clayton won for bassist.

The eighth edition of the awards, presented at the Knitting Factory, included lifetime achievement honors to bluegrass banjo player Earl Scruggs and to Scotty Moore, the guitarist behind Elvis Presley and the Sun Studios.

"I like a party as much as the next fellow," blues guitar winner Keb' Mo' said, "but the best part is being in the same room as Earl Scruggs."

Other winners were Acoustic Alchemy (jazz); Gillian Welch (country female); Brad Paisley (country male); India. Arie (acoustic guitar, female); Dave Matthews (acoustic guitar, male); and Pete Yorn (emerging guitarist). Moore led a jam session with the house band on "Heartbreak Hotel" and a few blues numbers following the ceremony, hosted by Mark DeCarlo.

Shutting Out Competitors?

Clear Channel Communications Inc

A U.S. lawmaker said on Tuesday federal regulators were exploring allegations that the largest radio broadcaster and concert promoter in the United States, Clear Channel Communications Inc., had abused its market position in a bid to shut out competitors.

In a January letter to the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission, Rep. Howard Berman called for a probe into complaints Clear Channel had limited airplay of stars like Britney Spears who do not use its concert services.

In his Jan. 22 letter, Berman, a Democrat from California, said the clout of a single entity controlling radio stations, TV stations, concert promotion services and other distribution channels for copyright content raised potential problems for consumers.

Berman said if these allegations were true, they have obvious, negative implications, including higher concert ticket prices and reduced selections of broadcast music for consumers.

In August, a small Denver concert promoter, Nobody in Particular Presents, sued Clear Channel, charging it with using its radio stations to play Clear Channel-promoted artists in the Denver area, while excluding or limiting airplay of artists promoted by smaller competitors.

The suit also alleged that artists were threatened they would lose airplay and on-air promotional support unless they used Clear Channel as their concert promoter.

'Indentured Servitude'

California Music Coalition

As a pop star protest against "indentured servitude" by penny pinching record companies grew to near-deafening decibel levels on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's Grammy Awards, the music industry roared back.

Led by Don Henley and Sheryl Crow, the Recording Artists Coalition has been demanding changes to a California law that ties musicians longer to contracts than in other industries.

Their efforts reached a crescendo Tuesday night with four Los Angeles protest concerts featuring such stars as the Eagles, Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks, Crow, No Doubt, The Offspring, The Dixie Chicks, Trisha Yearwood, Beck, and Eddie Vedder.

The recording artists are behind a bill currently before the California state legislature to repeal an amendment won by the music industry in 1987 that allows record labels to keep artists tied to contracts longer than talent in other sectors.

The new California Music Coalition said the artists want the right to walk away from their existing contracts and that this will ultimately hurt the industry and the state economy.

Miles Copeland, chairman of Ark-21 Records, a small record label, noted that the industry is already reeling from a variety of external causes, such as the digital revolution and online file swapping.

"Significant harm could be caused to the entire music business because of the very visible complaining by a few successful recording artists in our own family," Copeland said.

Courtroom Theatrics?

Al Goldstein

Screw magazine publisher Al Goldstein was convicted of aggravated harassment on Wednesday for telephoning an assistant and delivering a series of expletive-laden harangues after she quit working for him.

The jury in Brooklyn Criminal Court deliberated for 14 hours before finding Goldstein guilty of six counts of second-degree aggravated harassment for making abusive calls to the woman. He was acquitted of six other counts.

Shortly before the jury returned with its verdict, Goldstein threw himself to the floor saying, "I can't take it anymore. Another Jew bites the dust."

Emergency medical technicians were called to the scene, but Goldstein remained to hear the jury's decision and to talk to reporters afterward.

Goldstein was accused of verbally harassing the former assistant in May and June of last year after she quit working for him because he cursed her over a wait for a rental car in Los Angeles.

Goldstein faces up to two years in prison when he is sentenced. He also must abide by an order of protection to stay away from the victim for three years.

Keeping It All In The Family?

Auntie Sissy?

A man was charged with incest after authorities responding to his home on an unrelated complaint found him living with his sister and their 13 children and grandchildren.

Authorities also discovered that Samuel Thomas Patrick, 53, and his wife and sister, Debra Lynn Patrick, kept a casket containing the body of their infant son inside their remote home for 12 years. The couple had apparently exhumed the body in secret years ago.

"They have done a very good job of staying out of the public sight," Ken Holley, chief deputy of the Glades County Sheriff's Office, said Wednesday.

The sheriff's office removed the couple's nine children and four grandchildren from the home in rural Glades County, which borders Lake Okeechobee.

The children were transferred to the care of the Department of Children and Families. The agency said it couldn't discuss where the children were placed because of confidentiality laws, but Holley said it was unlikely they would stay together.

Samuel Patrick was arrested on one count of incest. He was being held Wednesday on $150,000 bond at the Glades County Jail.

Detectives are looking into the family structure and additional charges could be filed, Holley said.

"This is just the beginning of the investigation. The first priority was to get those kids in a safe environment," he said. "We need scientific evidence to determine the magnitude of this bizarre behavior"

Acting on a complaint, authorities went to the Patrick home Tuesday and discovered the casket of Joshua Patrick, who died of natural causes when he was 8-months old, officials said. The casket was allegedly exhumed from an Okeechobee County cemetery in 1990, but it was not immediately known when the boy died.

Samuel Patrick wasn't charged with removing the body from the grave because the statute of limitation had expired, the state attorney's office said.

In Memory

Spike Milligan

Spike Milligan

Spike Milligan, a founding father of 20th century British comedy and zany genius behind the ground-breaking "Goon Show," died Wednesday aged 83.

Milligan, pioneer of the meandering joke without a punch line, turned surreal comedy into an art form, influencing a whole generation of British comedians from the "Beyond the Fringe" team to "Monty Python's Flying Circus."

Fellow comedian Eddie Izzard hailed Milligan as "the godfather of alternative comedy." Heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, one of the Goons' greatest fans, said he had "a great affection" for Milligan.

Broadcaster Michael Parkinson said: "You could make the argument that modern British comedy started with Spike Milligan. He was the godfather of it all."

Along with Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers, Milligan's inconsequential nonsense and silly voices reigned supreme. He took zany humor to new heights of absurdity -- but at a cost.

Secombe admitted that he and Sellers "rode on the thermal currents of (Spike's) imagination" and it was Milligan who wrote all the scripts for The Goon Show -- 26 a year from 1951 to 1960.

For Milligan, the grueling task of writing the show sparked one of a dozen nervous breakdowns, making him the nation's most celebrated manic-depressive, a comic always on the edge of rage.

"I laugh that I may not weep," was his most likely motto, said Pauline Scudamore, his biographer and a close friend.

Milligan was renowned for his sharp tongue, once calling Prince Charles "a groveling little bastard" on live television.

Milligan made it up with Charles after that remark by sending him a telegram saying, "I suppose a knighthood is out of the question now?" But it wasn't -- Milligan was given an honorary knighthood two years ago.

He campaigned for animal rights and conservationist issues -- but he was far less patient with humans.

In 1974 Milligan shot a boy of 15 with an airgun for being in his garden, and he was said to have once threatened to kill Sellers with a potato peeler during a Goons rehearsal.

Terence Alan (Spike) Milligan was born in India on April 16, 1918, to an over-possessive mother and a sergeant-major.

As a soldier, Milligan ended World War Two in a psychiatric hospital after being shelled in Tunisia. His experiences were a rich vein of inspiration later for hugely popular war memoirs.

His first marriage to June Marlowe collapsed under the strain of writing Goon scripts. The couple had three children. Second wife Paddy Ridgeway died of cancer in 1978. He married Shelagh Sinclair in 1983 and he also had an illegitimate son.

An Irishman, he was angered by the attitude of the British authorities to his citizenship.

He once said: "I never see myself as Irish, but I am. My father and mother were both Irish and had Irish passports. I had a British passport but when I went to get it renewed and said my father was born in Ireland before 1900, they said I couldn't have a British passport -- some bloody law.

"So I said 'Fuck You'. I went to the Irish Embassy and I said: 'My name's Spike Milligan, can I have a passport?' And they said, 'Oh yes! We're short of people."'

Asked what words of advice he could offer to the younger generation, he once replied: "Run for it!"

How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican musicians?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?
A picture of yourself clad only in panties and sitting on Andy Williams' lap?
This is your place.
