Trivia Question from Yesterday

Who is "Darwin's Rottweiler"?

      Richard Dawkins                                                      Source

Clinton Richard Dawkins, FRS, FRSL (born 26 March 1941) is an English ethologist, evolutionary biologist, and author. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and was the University of Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008.

Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term meme.

Dawkins is an atheist, a vice president of the British Humanist Association, and a supporter of the Brights movement. He is well known for his criticism of creationism and intelligent design. In his 1986 book The Blind Watchmaker, he argues against the watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of a supernatural creator based upon the complexity of living organisms. Instead, he describes evolutionary processes as analogous to a blind watchmaker.

Dawkins has ardently opposed the inclusion of intelligent design in science education, describing it as "not a scientific argument at all, but a religious one". He has been referred to in the media as "Darwin's Rottweiler", a reference to English biologist T. H. Huxley, who was known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's evolutionary ideas.        Source

Whooo, that's Richard Dawkins, the next best thing to Carl Sagan, may his star stuff be peacefully reincorporated into the universe.   I admire much of Dawkins' writing, but one needs to be aware that he has his critics among serious biologists (and I don't mean creationists).

Dawkins's vulgarizations of Darwinism speak of nothing in evolution but an inexorable ascendancy of genes that are selectively superior, while the entire body of technical advance in experimental and theoretical evolutionary genetics of the last fifty years has moved in the direction of emphasizing non-selective forces in evolution.

PS: Regarding the lower picture, there was a special on NPR this morning about the Texas public schools. Apparently, a group of Bagger parents have gone postal regarding the agenda taught in the public schools down there. To make a long story short, they do not approve of information about other cultures and/or religions being taught to PUBLIC high school students there. They want, "Christian Values" to be the ONLY thing taught, and Creationism v/s Darwin. This summer they succeeded in dumping the curriculum for which the state spent millions of dollars, because it did not meet THEIR standards. Sadly, no one even challenged them...
I really want this country to break up, and dumping Texas from the Union would be number one to go!!

I never would have gotten this on my own as I've never, ever come across the term "Darwin's Rottweiler." Turns out it's Richard Dawkins, should anyone care. I think way too much time is wasted defending evolution. It is what it is and if a person doesn't believe it, that doesn't change a thing. it still is. Just because a person doesn't believe in something doesn't mean it's not true. If people ignores facts and chose to believe something unsupported by facts, you probably won't change their minds so why bother.
I've only met 3 Rottweilers in my life, none were like this first one. They were like the second one.

Can Seek Cut Of TV Money

College Athletes

A lawsuit brought by college athletes seeking television and videogame revenue can move forward, a U.S. judge has ruled, in a case that seeks to reshape traditional notions of sports amateurism in the United States.

In a decision on Friday, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken in Oakland, California, ruled that a group of players could sue the National Collegiate Athletic Association as a class action, in an effort to change rules that bar athletes from earning money on their images. However, she also ruled that athletes could not seek money damages for financial losses they suffered in the past.

The lawsuit takes on the highly lucrative business of college athletics, where universities reap billions of dollars from men's football and basketball, but players are not allowed to profit.

Filed in 2009, the case seeks to create a new system where broadcasting and videogame revenue would go into a fund. Players would not get a cut of it while they were actively playing, but they would get money after they were no longer NCAA-eligible, said Sathya Gosselin, an attorney for the athletes.

No Poison Found

Pablo Neruda

The four-decade mystery of whether Chilean Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda was poisoned was seemingly cleared up on Friday, when forensic test results showed no chemical agents in his bones. But his family and driver were not satisfied and said they'll request more proof.

Neruda died under suspicious circumstances in the chaos that followed Chile's 1973 military coup. The official version is that the poet died of cancer. But Neruda's former driver has said for years that dictatorship agents injected poison into the poet's stomach while he was bedridden at the Santa Maria clinic in Santiago.

"No relevant chemical substances have been found that could be linked to Mr. Neruda's death," Patricio Bustos, the head of Chile's medical legal service, said as he read the test results of the seven-month investigation by the 15-member forensic team.

The highly-anticipated results by the team of Chilean and international experts didn't satisfy Neruda's family members and friends who said the poet's case remains unsolved.

Small Tennessee Town's Aim

Rocky Top

Despite the famous bluegrass song, Rocky Top, Tenn., has never actually been home sweet home to anyone.

It's not a town at all, but a rocky outcropping in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, more than 5,400 feet high on the Appalachian Trail.

Now, an East Tennessee county commissioner and a group of silent partners want to do something about that. Reasoning that the name Rocky Top has cachet, they are promising an impoverished town of 1,700 big things if the residents would be willing to change the town's name from Lake City to that of the song.

As most college football fans in the Southeast know, "Rocky Top" is the fight song of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. The bluegrass standard is one of the state songs of Tennessee.

Country composers Boudleaux and Felice Bryant of Gatlinburg, Tenn., wrote the song in 10 minutes in 1967, inspired by tales about the spot on Thunderhead Mountain, about 50 miles from Lake City.

Aircraft Carrier Christened

USS Gerald R. Ford

The Navy christened the USS Gerald Ford on Saturday with the traditional smashing of a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow of the ship - the most technologically advanced aircraft carrier the United States has built.

The Ford is the lead ship in the Navy's next class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. It's designed to get more fighter planes in the sky in less time and to be ready to incorporate unmanned aircraft into its air wing. It's the first carrier redesign in four decades and is scheduled to join the fleet in 2016.

Saturday's christening was one part tribute to the future of Naval warfare and one part tribute to the ship's namesake, former President Gerald R. Ford. Ford was a lieutenant commander aboard an aircraft carrier during World War II and frequently spoke fondly of his time in the Navy.

Ford's daughter, Susan Bales Ford, is the ship's sponsor and had the duty of smashing the wine bottle into the ship.

75th Anniversary

Kristallnacht

Germans across the country are commemorating the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht - the night of broken glass - during which the Nazis staged a wave of attacks on Jews in Germany and Austria.

On Nov. 9, 1938, hundreds of synagogues were burned, numerous homes and Jewish-owned stores were ransacked, some 1,000 people were killed and more than 30,000 Jews were sent to concentration camps.

Germans in many cities and towns on Saturday are holding candle-light vigils, listening to Jewish survivors share memories and meeting at Jewish memories to remember the victims of Kristallnacht.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Kristallnacht "was an event that humiliated Jews in an unbelievable way ... a real low point in German history had been reached."

U.S., Israel Lose Voting Rights

UNESCO

UNESCO has suspended the voting rights of the United States and Israel, two years after both countries stopped paying dues to the U.N.'s cultural arm in protest over its granting full membership to the Palestinians.

The U.S. decision to cancel its funding in October 2011 was blamed on U.S. laws that prohibit funding to any U.N. agency that implies recognition of the Palestinians' demands for their own state.

Israel also pulled its funding, objecting to what it called unilateral attempts by the Palestinians to gain recognition of statehood.

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, is responsible for designating World Heritage sites, promoting global education and supporting press freedom, among other tasks.

The withdrawal of U.S. funding - which totalled about $240 million (£149,737,958.57), or some 22 percent of UNESCO's budget - has plunged it into a funding crisis and forced it to cut programs.

Co-Founder Guilty Of Assault

Pinkberry

Pinkberry co-founder Young Lee, who brought a sleek design to the international yogurt chain, was found guilty on Friday of assault with a deadly weapon for beating a homeless man with a tire iron at a Los Angeles freeway off-ramp in 2011, prosecutors said.

The attack occurred in June 2011 when Young, a South Korean kick boxer-turned-architect who parted ways with the frozen yogurt chain in 2010, got out of a Range Rover at an off-ramp of a Los Angeles freeway and beat the transient with a tire iron.

Young, who could face up to seven years in prison when he is sentenced in January, apparently believed the man had disrespected him and his then-fiancee by exposing a sexually explicit tattoo, said Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Jane Robison.

The 12-person jury, which was split evenly between men and women, deliberated just over a day in Los Angeles Superior Court before reaching a verdict.

Government Blocks Ashley Madison

Singapore

Singapore's government has blocked access to the popular adultery website Ashley Madison amid a public outcry ahead of the company's planned launch of a portal for the city-state.

The Media Development Authority, which regulates the Internet, said in a statement late Friday that it has blocked access to the Canada-based website because it is in "flagrant disregard of our family values and public morality."

"We will therefore not allow Ashley Madison to operate in Singapore and have worked with Internet service providers to block access to the site," the statement said.

AshleyMadison.com started in Canada in 2001. With the slogan "Life is short. Have an affair," it has attracted more than 20 million users.

Virus Outbreak

Dolphins

The deadliest known outbreak of a measles-like virus in bottlenose dolphins has killed a record number of the animals along the US Atlantic coast since July, officials said Friday.

A total of 753 bottlenose dolphins have washed up from New York to Florida from July 1 until November 3, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

That is more than 10 times the number of dolphins that would typically turn up dead along East Coast beaches, said Teri Rowles, program coordinator of the NOAA Fisheries Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program.

"Historic averages for this same time frame, same geographic area is only 74, so you get an idea of the scope," she told reporters.

The death toll is also higher than the more than 740 strandings in the last major Atlantic morbillivirus outbreak in 1987-1988.

Florida's Largest Private Landowner

Mormon Church

The Mormon church is poised to become the largest private landowner in Florida as a result of a deal to buy nearly 400,000 acres in the state's Panhandle region.

The property is mostly timberland, and the church "intends to maintain timber and agricultural uses of the lands," according to a statement released by St. Joe Company, a Florida real estate firm.

The signed sales agreement with the church's company, AgReserves Inc., for $565 million is subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals, according to the statement. The company expects the deal to be finalized in the first quarter of 2014.

The Mormon church was already one of Florida's largest landowners. For more than 60 years, the church has owned Deseret Ranches, a 290,000 cattle and citrus operation straddling three counties in Central Florida, approximately 50 miles southeast of downtown Orlando.

The addition of St. Joe's 382,834 acres brings the church's Florida holdings to 672,834 acres, or almost 2 percent of the state's land mass. The total does not include smaller isolated church parcels for its Orlando and South Florida temples and other interests.

Compares Jobs

Tom Cruise

Think being an Olympic sprinter or a soldier fighting the war in Afghanistan have it rough? According to Tom Cruise, his job as an actor is just as difficult as both of those occupations.

In a September deposition obtained by TMZ.com, Cruise compared shooting on location to serving a tour in Afghanistan. "That's what it feels like. And certainly on this last movie, it was brutal. It was brutal." The 51-year-old movie star then went on to claim that the physical training he does for his films are harder than training for the Olympics. "There is difficult physical stamina and preparation. Sometimes I've spent months, a year, and sometimes two years preparing for a single film," he said. "A sprinter for the Olympics, they only have to run two races a day. When I'm shooting, I could potentially have to run 30, 40 races a day, day after day."

The deposition is part of a $50 million libel lawsuit brought on by Cruise against Bauer Publishing, which runs In Touchmagazine. Cruise is suing over a cover story that claimed he "abandoned" Suri, his daughter with ex-wifeKatie Holmes, after Holmes filed for divorce in June 2012. In his deposition, Cruise explained that he did not see Suri for more than 100 days and that he only saw her 10 days between June 2012 and Thanksgiving 2012. However, Cruise said rigorous shooting schedules for two back-to-back films were to blame.

The deposition was also revealing because Cruise admitted that, as frequently rumored at the time of their split, Scientology did play a role in his and Holmes' divorce. When asked by a lawyer whether "Katie Holmes left you in part to protect Suri from Scientology." Cruise responded, "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes."
