Recalls Hitchcock-Spielberg Meeting

Bruce Dern

Bruce Dern, who starred in Alfred Hitchcock's final film "Family Plot," revealed a situation where the master of suspense displayed some nervousness of his own.

Dern said during filming of "Family Plot" in 1976, a young Steven Spielberg appeared on the Universal lot, hoping to meet Hitchcock.

Dern went to the formidable Hitchcock, who asked, "Bruce, is that the boy who made the fish movie?"

Dern replied, "Yeah ... He just wants to kind of let you know what a fan he is."

Hitchcock started shaking and said he was too nervous to speak to him because he felt "like such a whore."

When Dern asked why, Hitchcock said, "I'm the voice of a 'Jaws' commercial."

Staying Put At MSGOP

Dan Abrams

MSNBC will keep its current primetime lineup intact with "The Abrams Report" remaining in the 9 p.m. time slot. Hosted by NBC News' chief legal correspondent Dan Abrams, the show gained 13% in viewers in July from June, the only cable news program to do so, although his ratings have declined in August.

In a statement MSNBC president Erik Sorenson said Abrams' show "is the perfect program four (sic) our young, smart audience during this period of high profile legal stories."

MSNBC and Ventura have been conducting dry runs of a talk show in recent months, and network executives apparently concluded that the weekly route was the way to go.

"Jesse and I have agreed that this is the best venue for his unconventional approach to politics and television," Sorenson said.

The 25th Anniversary DVD

Chrysalis/Capitol Records has spruced up a 1994 VHS release of the 1970s rock band Jethro Tull for a new DVD.

The DVD "Jethro Tull: The 25th Anniversary" contains bonus material such as a full performance of "Teacher" from a 1970 French TV gig, and a live performance of "The Witches Promise" is revealed in a hidden Easter egg.

The first part of the DVD covers the celebration of Jethro Tull's 25th anniversary party, including interviews with former members and current collaborators interwoven among live performance clips of "Nothing Is Easy" at the Isle of Wight Festival during the 1970s and a performance of "Thick as a Brick" at New York's Madison Square Garden in 1978.

The latest "Tull" DVD, the third in a series, includes never-before-seen complete live performances of "Teacher", "The Witches Promise", "The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles", "Aqualung", "Kissing Willie", "Rocks on the Road" and "Living in the Past".

Influenced By Moby

Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox drew from several inspirations for her new album, Bare. She said the album's soulful tone came from the continuing influence of American soul music, but she was also touched by Moby's 1999 album Play.

"What he'd found is something almost like Negro music, you know, spiritual music, put together with techno sounds," Lennox said. "It has the rawness, the depth, and pain of deep blues, if you like, and gospel, mixed with this hard-core, contemporary, technological sound. I found that, like, a really heady mix."

Bare is Lennox's first release since her 1995 covers project, Medusa.

Boy Scout Troop Loses Charter

Sebastopol, California

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) refused to renew a charter for Venture Crew (VC) 488, based in Sebastopol, California, a town in the middle of the gay-friendly Russian River area of Sonoma County, because troop leaders made it known they had an anti-discrimination policy and accepted anyone as a member, regardless of religion or sexual orientation.

VC 488, like other venture crews, operates as a coed scouting unit and focuses on high-adventure activities, including white-water rafting and backpacking. The group is planning a protest against the BSA action on Aug. 21 in Santa Rosa, California. The protest will take place in front of the Redwood Empire Council, which presides over the Boy Scouts in four counties in Northern California.

"We're not going to walk away from this and turn our backs on gay scouts or atheist scouts," Scott Cozza, founder of Scouting for All, a group fighting the BSA's discrimination policies, told the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network. "We know they won't turn anything around. The council is very bigoted and the group won't get their charter back, but this is a way of educating."

Producer Pleads Guilty in Seagal Case

Julius Nasso

A former business partner of Steven Seagal's admitted Wednesday that he plotted to have the mob shake down the action-film star.

Julius Nasso, a producer of early Seagal films that grossed millions of dollars, pleaded guilty in federal court to extortion conspiracy. Under a plea deal, he will serve one year in prison and pay a $75,000 fine; no sentencing date was set.

Nasso, 50, told a federal magistrate that he had an "understanding" that a reputed capo in the Gambino crime family, Anthony "Sonny" Ciccone, would confront Seagal about a debt in a way "that would be perceived to be a threat." Ciccone was convicted along with Peter Gotti, brother of late mob boss John Gotti, in a racketeering case and is awaiting sentencing.

The actor said while testifying earlier this year that at a meeting at a Brooklyn steakhouse in 2000, Ciccone and other Gambino enforcers demanded that Seagal keep working with Nasso and pay him $150,000 per film.

Surveillance tapes later captured Ciccone and other mobsters chuckling over how "petrified" Seagal looked.

Moving To South Korea

Australian Camels

Classic operas are being blasted out to a string of Australian camels to prepare them for a one-way trip to South Korea later this month to star in a vast production of Guiseppe Verdi's opera "Aida."

Six dromedaries will be flown from central Australia to Seoul, but strict quarantine laws mean they will never return to their homeland and are expected to be used in South Korea's tourist industry, said camel handler Janet Geappen on Saturday.

Tenor Jose Carreras will sing in the South Korean production of "Aida," which is set in ancient Egypt and tells the tragic love story of Radames, an Egyptian commander, and Aida, his Ethiopian love.

Australia has the world's largest wild camel population, with conservative estimates at 500,000. Camels were first brought to Australia in the 18th century to help explorers venture into the dry interior.

'Pinnacle of Evolution'

Clive Bromhall

While conservative groups dismiss homosexuality as "unnatural," a leading zoologist has said gay people could be seen as the "pinnacle of evolution."

At a time when religious and conservative right-wing groups are attempting to dismiss homosexuality as "unnatural," a leading zoologist has said gay people could be seen as the "pinnacle of evolution."

Speaking at the Edinburgh Book Festival, Clive Bromhall said that humankind's evolution has resulted in our present state of "infantilism," in which we break the primate mold by being playful, creative and childlike right into adulthood.

"From men's obsession with swollen breasts to our constant search for a pseudoparental God, everything about the human species is infantile," Bromhall said in a lecture.

Bromhall claims that infantilism is rejected by straight people as they age -- and that by remaining in same-sex relationships, gay men and women are actually displaying superiority over their peers.

Hunter Fined For Killing Condor

Britton Cole Lewis

A hunter was ordered to pay $20,000 Friday and sentenced to five years probation for killing an endangered California condor.

Britton Cole Lewis, 29, pleaded guilty in May to shooting the condor, North America's largest land bird according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

"I can honestly say I knew nothing about these condors," Lewis told a magistrate judge before sentencing. "I sincerely wish I could take back what I've done."

Lewis also was fined and sentenced to three years probation for killing a white-tailed deer in Illinois in 2001. Lewis pleaded guilty to falsely saying he was a resident to obtain a hunting permit there. It became a federal crime when he brought the deer's mounted head to California in April 2002.
