Re: Roy Zimmerman

Hi Marty,

I'm writing about your Bartcop Entertainment page of Monday, June 2, 2003:

In particular, I'm writing about the "Political Satire" section written by Baron Dave Romm. Among Baron Dave's recommendations are The Foremen, a brilliant political satire folk group. I'm a huge fan of The Foremen and also of Roy Zimmerman, their founding member and composer/lyricist who has moved on to a solo career. I run a fansite dedicated to Roy Zimmerman.

A couple of the links that Dave used in his section about the Foremen are outdated, so I'm writing to give you the revised links. Baron Dave has now updated the links on his own page.

By the way, in addition to the four fabulous Foremen albums that Baron Dave mentioned, Roy Zimmerman has released a great solo CD called "Comic Sutra." (Information is here) And he's currently finishing up a new solo CD which he hopes to have out by the end of the summer.

Thank you very much!

Joan M

Thanks for the updates, Joan. If all went well tonight, the June 2nd page has been updated.  ; )

85th Birthday

Nelson Mandela

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton waves to the crowd as he arrives with his wife, Hillary at Nelson Mandela's star studded 85th birthday party celebration in Johannesburg, South Africa, Saturday July 19, 2003. Photo by Obed Zilwa

Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former U.S. president Bill Clinton led a host of glittering stars and world luminaries in celebrating the 85th birthday of former South African leader Nelson Mandela on Saturday.

Bringing an Irish theme to the event, rock star Bono joined Irish band the Corrs on stage and Clinton quoted verses by Irish Nobel literature laureate Seamus Heaney in praise of Mandela.

"You have made hope and history thrive. You have made beautiful music in all our lives. I hope our birthday present to you will be a lifetime of service, to make Africa all it can be, and to make the world the village your life deserves," he said.

Clinton arrived fresh from delivering the first in a series of annual lectures inaugurated in Mandela's honor, at which he had called for more debt relief for Africa.

The former U.S. President and his family received a warm welcome in contrast to the relatively cold shoulder presented to George W. Bush by the South African public when the current U.S. president made a short state visit earlier this month.

Rock The Vote Press Conference

Dixie Chicks

The Dixie Chicks will host a press conference on July 21 in Los Angeles to announce their teamwork with Rock The Vote. The trio wants to help the nonprofit voter participation organization to encourage young people, especially young women, to register and vote.

The Chicks are quite suited to urge Americans to speak out, as lead singer Natalie Maines proved yet again when she issued the now famous anti-Bush comment before a concert crowd in London in March. Despite the immediate backlash the award-winning group suffered from the comment, the Dixie Chicks have managed to draw fans in record numbers to their sold-out Top Of The World tour. The group has joined the elite ranks of such top-selling acts as Billy Joel, Elton John and the Rolling Stones, taking in over $35-million during the first half of 2003, according to Pollstar. The Chicks actually sold more tickets than Joel, Elton or the Stones considering their tickets sell at a lower price point.

Fans may be flocking but radio programmers haven't yet jumped back on the Dixie Chicks' bandwagon. The group's current single, "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)," sits at Number 53 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart after eight weeks on the chart.

Boxer Shorts Auctioned

John F. Kennedy

A pair of President John F. Kennedy's Navy boxer shorts sold for $5,000 at auction on Saturday, while an on-line bidder for a personal notebook used during the 1960 Presidential campaign thought her winning bid was for $2,250, not the actual high bid of $22,500.

The campaign notebook is black and contains 22 pages of lists, speech ideas and campaign notes. It was used by then Senator Kennedy during the 1960 presidential campaign.

The item garnering the highest price was a leather attache case, an engagement present from Mrs. Kennedy to her future husband, that fetched $32,500. The case was a special item not owned by the two Mrs. Kennedy assistants. It was consigned for the sale by the Museum of American Financial History.

Bidding for one autographed special edition of Kennedy's inaugural address closed at $10,000. Another went for $9,000.

The $5,000 boxer shorts were World War two Navy-issue, with the sewn label, "Jack Kennedy." Two pairs of his pajama bottoms sold at $2,000.

To Create Atlantic City Mural

Peter Max

Pop artist Peter Max has been enlisted to brighten up the Boardwalk.

The artist, whose vivid psychedelic images were a '60s staple, will create a mural for an exterior wall of Boardwalk Hall, covering a pockmarked, unsightly stretch that was exposed two years ago when the adjacent Trump World's Fair casino was demolished.

"What happened was that the PR people called up and asked me to do a vast mural," Max said. "So I said, `How big?' They said it was 355, 360 feet. I said, `Oh, my God, that's a juicy size.'"

Max plans to donate the mural, but the state Casino Reinvestment Development Authority will be asked to put up about $20,000 to cover the cost of reproducing the artwork and installing it.

The design will be unveiled Aug. 1, Max said.

Next Generation To Perform

Martin & Lewis

The first time a Martin and a Lewis got together, they became the most famous comedy act of the post-World War II era, before breaking up in 1956.

Ricci Martin and Gary Lewis will perform together for the first time at Buffalo's Italian Heritage Festival in a hastily arranged pairing that both say appealed to them right away.

Not only will Saturday night's performance be the first time the two perform together, it will be the first time they've ever met. They set up the joint appearance by telephone last week.

Osbourne tells the magazine the Osbournes' Pomeranian, Pipi, was attacked earlier this month, but was saved by her husband, Ozzy.

"Ozzy heard the screams and fought and got Pip out of the coyote's mouth," she says.

Humbled by Queen's Honor

Pierce Brosnan

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan said he was bowled over on Saturday to be honored by Britain's Queen Elizabeth for portraying her most famous and unflappable spy, James Bond.

"I'm sure I'm very humbled by an honor like this," the 50-year-old Brosnan said as he was made an honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) -- honorary because he is not a British subject.

On screen Brosnan has saved the world from annihilation several times over, but he said receiving the honor in his native Ireland, with his mother, stepfather, three children and granddaughter by his side, had touched him deeply.

Bidders Fail To Bite

Elvis' Tooth

A tooth said to have been pulled from Elvis Presley after an injury failed to attract the minimum $100,000 selling price on the eBay Web site by the time a 10-day auction ended, officials said on Saturday.

Frenzied, but ultimately fraudulent bidding briefly pushed the price above $2 million before eBay required potential buyers to register if they wanted to place bids, according to Anthony DeFontes, who represents hairdresser Flo Briggs of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Though the dental artifact, which was packaged with shorn strands of the crooner's hair, created an Internet frenzy -- 161,000 people viewed the web page within 48 hours, DeFontes said -- no legitimate bids remained when the auction ended shortly before midnight on Friday.

Briggs is selling off the collection because insurance companies are requiring expensive surveillance equipment be installed before they will extend policies covering the artifacts.

Just being invited to participate in a celebration of the National Aviation Hall of Fame during the centennial of the Wright brothers' first flight was an honor for Harrison Ford.

The actor, who owns and flies airplanes and a helicopter, was slated as master of ceremonies for Saturday's hall of fame homecoming celebration.

The observances were being held in the hometown of Wilbur and Orville Wright, who made the first powered flight near Kitty Hawk, N.C., on Dec. 17, 1903.

Prototype Fails to Sell at Auction

G.I. Joe

A one-of-a-kind 1963 prototype of G.I. Joe, the iconic action figure that revolutionized America's toy industry failed to meet the $250,000 reserve price at a widely publicized San Diego auction Friday and remained unsold, organizers said.

Sponsors of the auction had said they expected the first G.I. Joe figure would fetch more than $600,000, by far the most money ever paid for a child's plaything.

None of the seven bids received even reached the reserve price, said John Petty, director of Dallas-based Heritage Comics Auctions.

In Memory

David Hampton

David Hampton, the ersatz son of Sidney Poitier whose pursuit of the glamorous life inspired the award-winning play "Six Degrees of Separation," died last month in a decidedly desolate fashion: alone in a Manhattan hospital bed, friends confirmed Saturday.

"David, like many of us, had a real need to be somebody important and special," said attorney and close friend Susan Tipograph. "He did stuff to be somebody in his mind — somebody important, somebody fabulous.

"To me, he was fabulous."

The black teenager earned notoriety by charming his way into New York's white upper crust, presenting himself in 1983 as the Oscar-winning Poitier's son and a Harvard University student. The scam inspired John Guare's acclaimed play and a movie starring Will Smith.

The reality was quite different: Hampton came from a middle-class home in Buffalo, a city he once dismissed as lacking anyone "glamorous or fabulous or outrageously talented." His father was an attorney, not an actor.

Hampton, 39, died at Beth Israel Hospital, Tipograph said. He had been living in a small room at an AIDS residence, and was trying to start work on a book about his life.

Hampton was glib, charming, funny — the skills of the consummate con man. He talked his way into the homes of several prominent New Yorkers, including the dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the president of public television station WNET.

Once there, he reveled in the posh surroundings and fancy meals. He accepted money and clothes and regaled his hosts with stories about his famous "father."

"David took a great joy in living the life he lived," said attorney Ronald Kuby, who knew Hampton for more than a decade. "It was performance art on the world's smallest possible stage, usually involving an audience of only one or two."

After he was taken into custody in October 1983, police said Hampton had six previous arrests in New York and Buffalo. Hampton, just 19, pleaded guilty to attempted burglary and was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Guare, inspired by the bizarre tale, opened his play in 1990 to immediate critical praise. It won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, an Obie, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

But on the day the play was nominated for four Tony Awards, a court order was issued telling Hampton to stay away from Guare, who said he'd been threatened.

Hampton felt entitled to a cut of the cash generated by his "work," and he sued — unsuccessfully — for a $100 million piece of the play's profits in 1992. There was victory in the defeat: It introduced him to another of Manhattan's bright lights, radical lawyer William Kunstler.

Hampton was later arrested for leaving this message on Guare's answering machine: "I would strongly advise you that you give me some money or you can start counting your days." A jury acquitted him of harassment.

"I think he felt used by Mr. Guare," said Tipograph. "I'll let history judge that."

The 1993 movie version of the play earned Stockard Channing an Oscar nomination for best actress. Channing recreated her stage performance as a wealthy Manhattanite taken in by the scam artist.

In recent years, Hampton kept in touch with friends and stayed in trouble: He faced charges of fare-beating and credit-card theft. One alleged victim told The New York Times that Hampton, using the name David Hampton-Montilio, duped him out of more than $1,400 in October 2001.

"When pretending to be somebody else, he dazzled people," Kuby said. "For an evening or a couple of days, he mesmerized people by bringing them into his totally fictitious world of stardom."
