Anecdotes

Animals

• Navajo artist R.C. Gorman used to keep several pets, including a de-scented skunk, several iguanas, and a pig at his art gallery. However, the skunk and iguanas frightened his models, so he gave these pets to the Albuquerque Zoo. Unfortunately, his pet pig disappeared under suspicious circumstances shortly before a pig barbeque was held near his art gallery.

• To illustrate his Caldecott Medal-winning picture-book, Make Way for Ducklings, Robert McCloskey needed to know what the underside of a duck's bill looked like in flight. Therefore, Mr. McCloskey brought a live duck home, wrapped it in a towel, and put it on a couch in such a way that its head stuck out. Mr. McCloskey then lay underneath the duck's head and sketched what he saw.

• Buick, the pet dog of friends of children's book illustrator Tim Lewis, loved cows, and whenever the friends were driving in the country, if someone mentioned the word "cow," Buick would tear around, going from window to window until he sighted the cow. This was hazardous, so eventually the family started spelling the word "cow" when they drove in the country with Buick.

• Like many creative people, Theodor Geisel, who is better known as Dr. Seuss, went through an impoverished period early in life. He and a friend once rented a rat-infested apartment in Greenwich Village. They used canes to drive the rats away from their apartment before going to bed so the rats would not bother them while they were asleep.

• When he was a small boy, Quaker artist Benjamin West made brushes out of hairs from his family's pet cat, but he had to stop doing this after his father noticed that the cat looked as if it had been severely attacked by moths.

• In New York City, comedian Bob Smith worked as a cater-waiter for a woman who introduced her dogs to him by saying, "This is Picasso, and this is Gorky - the painter, not the writer."

Architects

• After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which destroyed most of the city, architect Julia Morgan was hired to rebuild the Fairmont Hotel, in part because of her expertise in reinforced concrete, which was at that time a new material. Women architects were rare, so a woman reporter inspected the Fairmont Hotel, then asked the foreman, "Is the building really in the charge of a woman architect?" The foreman replied, "This building is in [the] charge of a real architect, and her name happens to be Julia Morgan." After the building was completed, another woman reporter came to see it. Standing in the dining room, which was decorated with gold, gray, ivory, and scarlet, she said to Ms. Morgan, "How you must have reveled in this chance to squeeze dry the loveliest tubes in the whole world of color!" Ms. Morgan replied, "I don't think you understand just what my work here has been. The decorative part was done by a New York firm. My work has all been structural."

• Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed architecture as works of art, but he also was capable of being very practical. He invented toilets that hung from the wall and stall partitions that hung from the ceiling to make mopping easier. In addition, when he designed the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Japan, he was aware of the risk of earthquakes and fires resulting from them, so he designed a courtyard pool to serve both as an aesthetic element and as a source of water to fight fires following an earthquake that cut off the usual water supply. After it was completed, the Imperial Hotel survived with little damage a devastating earthquake shortly, and the courtyard pool provided water to fight the fires that sprang up after the earthquake.

The Flying Nun is an American sitcom produced by Screen Gems for ABC based on the 1965 book The Fifteenth Pelican, written by Tere Rios. It starred Sally Field as Sister Bertrille. The series originally ran on ABC from September 7, 1967, to April 3, 1970, producing 82 episodes, including a one-hour pilot episode.

Developed by Bernard Slade, the series centered on the adventures of a community of nuns in the Convent San Tanco in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The comic elements of the storyline were provided by the flying ability of a novice nun, Sister Bertrille.        Source

The Flying Nun. Another ABC series I couldn't watch because of my family was living in the Michigan equivalent of Hootersville where we couldn't receive ABC broadcasts and my folks wouldn't pay for cable where we could have received 11 channels instead of 2. I understand that the show was just as stupid and bad as it looked and that Sally Field is still embarrassed she was involved in the production. Nonetheless it survived for 3 seasons.

Interview Ratings

Mary Trump

Mary Trump's interview with Rachel Maddow gave the show its highest rated hour in its history and set a record for the highest rated scheduled show on MSNBC, the network said on Friday.

The Rachel Maddow Show pulled in 5.2 million viewers, also making it the top show on broadcast and cable in total viewers. Hannity, which usually wins the time slot, had 3.8 million viewers.

MSNBC said that Maddow also was the top show across cable in the 25-54 demographic. It also boosted Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell, which had 3.5 million viewers.

In the interview, Trump, who is the president's niece, claimed that she heard Donald Trump use racist language, including the N-word. The White House responded to her claims, telling Maddow's show, "This is a book of falsehoods, plain and simple. The president doesn't use those words."

Sunday Interview

Chris Wallace

As Fox News' Chris Wallace sat down for an interview with Donald Trump (R-Failure) on Friday, he called out when the president claimed that Joe Biden supports defunding the police.

In the interview, set to air Sunday on Fox News Sunday, Trump blamed Democrats for violence in major cities, and then added, "It's gotten totally out of control and it's really because they want to defund the police, and Biden wants to defund the police."

Wallace responded, "Sir, he does not."

Trump then claimed that Biden's "charter" with Bernie Sanders - or a unity platform designed to bring together the left and centrist wings of the parties - supports defunding the police.

"It says nothing about defunding the police," Wallace said.

Concert for Cuba

Cuban artists including Los Van Van and Alexander Abreu, plus Tom Morello, Michael McDonald and Ozomatli are among 60 acts that will join together for a free two-night concert to honor Cuba's doctors.

The Concert for Cuba is a two-night, six-hour streaming festival set for this weekend (July 18-19). It will rally to garner a Nobel Prize for the international efforts of Cuban medical professionals during the pandemic and advocate for the end of the U.S. embargo while showcasing performances by Cuban artists and international acts who will lend their support for the event's messages.

Other artists -- including Orquesta Aragon, Mezcla, Síntesis, Dayramir Gonzalez, Omara Portuondo and Orquesta Failde -- will perform from the Cuban Music Institute and other locations in Havana. Morello, McDonald, Ozomatli, Dionne Warwick, Arturo O´Farrill and others will appear via video from different locations. All are performing pro bono. See more information about where to stream the event below.

The event will also include appearances by Danny Glover, Michael Moore and several U.S. politicians, as well as Cuban doctors and U.S. doctors who studied in Cuba.

The Concert for Cuba is "something positive in a moment when there's so much sadness. Accentuating the work of the Cuban medical teams seems like something most people can rally around and support," says Marguerite Horberg, the founder and director of Chicago Cultural Center HotHouse.

Bridger Walker

Robert Downey Jr. is the latest celebrity to send well wishes to Bridger Walker, a boy who jumped into action when a dog charged toward his 4-year-old sister. The dog latched on to his cheek while he shielded his sister, and Bridger is still recovering after receiving 90 stitches.

Nicole Walker, Bridger's aunt, posted about the incident on Instagram, and his story soon went viral, garnering attention from celebrities around the world, including that Chris Evans.

Evans, known for his "Captain America" role, thanked Bridger for his bravery and promised to send the boy an authentic "Captain America" shield.

While many have inquired about a GoFundMe to support Bridger's recovery, the family has asked people to redirect their financial efforts to Bridger's favorite organizations: Mission 22, Operation Underground Railroad and The Wounded Warrior Project. However, Bridger, a geology-fanatic, will gladly accept pictures or gifts of "cool rocks," according to his aunt.

Bridger's family reported that they also received messages from Hugh Jackman, Robbie Amell, Tom Holland, Zachary Levi, the Russo brothers, Mark Ruffalo and countless other people who were inspired by the boy's story.

Experts Warn

Congress

Authorities who study extremism told Congress Thursday that far-right groups, not the radicals of antifa, currently pose the most serious threat of political violence in America - including attacks on the police.

"The facts are right now that right-wing extremism is the bigger problem. That's where the violence is coming from," said Heidi Beirich, the recent co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism and former director of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, where she spent the past two decades tracking and reporting on far-right extremist activity in the U.S.

Beirich was called to testify Thursday as part of a virtual hearing of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Intelligence & Counterterrorism, along with JJ MacNab, a fellow at George Washington University's Program on Extremism, and John Donohue, the former chief of strategic initiatives for the New York City Police Department and a fellow at Rutgers University's Miller Center for Community Protection and Resilience.

The subject of the hearing, led by subcommittee Chairman Max Rose, D-N.Y., was "assessing the threat of accelerationists and militia extremists," such as members of the so-called boogaloo movement, which has recently become the subject of increased national interest following the arrests of several alleged boogaloo members on charges mostly related to violent actions or plots relating to the Black Lives Matter protests. Among them was an active-duty Air Force sergeant arrested in May and charged with fatally shooting two law enforcement agents in California, including one federal security officer, and injuring two others.

"If there's something happening [anywhere] on the political spectrum that involves violence, upending society, threatening institutions, we gotta look at it," Rose said, insisting that "it is incredibly irrelevant to me which groups we look at so long as we are looking at the principal ones that threaten people's lives."

Booed

Bubba Wallace

NASCAR's Cup Series All-Star Race was not a good one for Bubba Wallace. Appearing at a qualifier held on Wednesday in Bristol, Tennessee, Wallace was booed, then crashed into a wall.

It was the first time a significant number of fans were present at a NASCAR race since the Confederate flag was banned. Several thousand fans were on hand - and so was the flag.

Jenna Fryer, the Associated Press auto racing reporter, tweeted that many Confederate flags were sighted in and around the Bristol Motor Speedway.

"FWIW, in addition to Confederate flag flying over Bristol there was another hanging off a balcony of a condo across from the main entrance as well as others along Speedway Blvd. Spoke to fan @Matt2Harrison and he said he say many flags on shirts and other items in stands."

"Bubba Wallace was also booed when he was introduced, and many cheered when he crashed. NASCAR still has a lot of work to do to back up its position. The group Justice 4 Diversity held signs along Speedway Blvd. after the race."

Shutting Down On Weekends

Israel

Israel announced sweeping new restrictions on Friday in response to a new surge in coronavirus cases, including weekend closures of many businesses and limiting restaurants to takeout and delivery.

The government announced the restrictions after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "interim steps" were needed to avoid another general lockdown. Netanyahu has faced widespread criticism and protests in recent days over his government's handling of the pandemic and the economic fallout from an earlier lockdown.

Gyms and exercise studios will be closed except for use by competitive athletes and beaches will be closed on weekends, beginning later this month. The Israeli weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Restaurants were initially ordered to halt seated dining by Friday evening, but the government later backtracked in the face of an uproar by owners who said they had already purchased fresh ingredients for the weekend rush and would suffer major financial losses if they had to throw them out.

Stores, malls, barber shops, beauty salons and tourist sites will be closed on weekends, starting Friday. Public gatherings will be limited to 10 people indoors or 20 outside. The Cabinet approved the new measures, pending approval by the Knesset, Israel's parliament, but said they would take effect Friday evening with violation considered a criminal offense.

Use Earth's Magnetic Field

Dogs

Dogs are renowned for their world-class noses, but a new study suggests they may have an additional-albeit hidden-sensory talent: a magnetic compass. The sense appears to allow them to use Earth's magnetic field to calculate shortcuts in unfamiliar terrain.

The finding is a first in dogs, says Catherine Lohmann, a biologist at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who studies "magnetoreception" and navigation in turtles. She notes that dogs' navigational abilities have been studied much less compared with migratory animals such as birds. "It's an insight into how [dogs] build up their picture of space," adds Richard Holland, a biologist at Bangor University who studies bird navigation.

There were already hints that dogs-like many animals, and maybe even humans-can perceive Earth's magnetic field. In 2013, Hynek Burda, a sensory ecologist at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague who has worked on magnetic reception for 3 decades, and colleagues showed dogs tend to orient themselves north-south while urinating or defecating. Because this behavior is involved in marking and recognizing territory, Burda reasoned the alignment helps dogs figure out the location relative to other spots. But stationary alignment isn't the same thing as navigation.

In the new study, Burda's graduate student, Katerina Benediktová, initially put video cameras and GPS trackers on four dogs and took them on trips into the forest. The dogs would scamper off to chase the scent of an animal for 400 meters on average. The GPS tracks showed two types of behavior during their return trips to their owner. In one, dubbed tracking, a dog would retrace its original route, presumably following the same scent. In the other behavior, called scouting, the dog would return along a completely new route, bushwhacking without any backtracking.

When Benediktová showed the data to Burda, her Ph.D. adviser, he noticed a curious feature: In the middle of a scouting run, the dog would stop and run for about 20 meters along a north-south axis before it began to navigate back. Those short runs looked like an alignment along the magnetic field, but Benediktová didn't have enough data to be sure.

Germany'a Largest Meteorite

"Blaubeuren"

Researchers announced Wednesday the discovery of the largest-known meteorite to have landed in Germany.

The unusual find had been sitting for years in a garden in the southwestern German town of Blaubeuren, according to a statement from the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

"The find has a mass of 30.26 kilograms [66.7 pounds], which makes it the largest stone meteorite ever found in Germany," meteorite expert Dieter Heinlein said.

The unassuming, but unusual, rock was dug up in 1989 in the garden of a man living in Blaubeuren, a town with around 12,500 inhabitants.

Until now, a meteorite dubbed "Benthullen" bore the title as the largest to be found in Germany, weighing 17.25 kilograms (38 pounds).
