In The Chaos Household

Last Night

A little fog formed along the coastline, and the afternoon wasn't as hot as yesterday's.

Called my Aunt Vivian today - she's the repository of all great recipes (& who's pissed at whom) in my extended eyetalian family. In a perfect world, everyone would have an Aunt Vivian.

KCBS, channel 2 in Los Angeles, is filling daytime weekend hours with old episodes of 'All In The Family' (KCBS is owned by Viacom & also owns most of what airs on TV Land), and was struck that Archie Bunker always wore a flag lapel pin, long before chimpy & his minion.

Was anyone watching 'Faux & Friends' this past Friday - what was the reference to 'Beer Pong' & the Bush Twins?

Tonight, Sunday, CBS, as usual, starts the night with '60 Minutes', followed by a RERUN 'Without A Trace', then the movie 'Wild, Wild West'.

Supports L.A. Music Scene

Amoeba Music

Retailers can talk all they want about supporting unsigned independent acts, but mega-retailer Amoeba Music in Los Angeles is putting its money where its mouth is.

As an outgrowth of its Home Grown program -- which affords free positioning and advertising to local performers who have released their own records -- Amoeba is teaming with House of Blues in L.A. to mount two summer shows featuring eight indie artists.

The L.A. program is the dominion of Mary Patton, who handles advertising and marketing for the enormous Sunset Boulevard store.

Acts selected for the program are featured on Amoeba's Music We Like endcap -- a coveted position next to the main checkout line in the store. Patton says the retailer buys a minimum of 10 units, though the store may initially purchase as many as 60 units from a well-known local band.

Participating bands also receive their own dedicated quarter-page ads in LA Weekly and the bi-weekly Campus Life magazine. They are also featured in the Home Grown section of the Amoeba Web site (www.amoebamusic.com).

The first of the Home Grown Summer Showcase Series at HOB is a rock evening on July 20, featuring the Action Cats, Sean Dailey & Desolation Sound, the 88 and the Slow Signal Fade.

A roots-music night follows on Aug. 11, with Carlos Guitarlos, Lorna Hunt, I See Hawks in L.A. and Mike Stinson.

Tickets for the events will be priced at $10, but Patton adds, "We're going to have a lot of giveaways. We're hoping to fill the room. We're giving tickets away to people in the industry."

The contentious Drumcree Orange parade traditionally takes place the Sunday before July 12th. The Parades Commission has again banned Orangemen from marching down the mainly Catholic Garvachy road, which has previously led to violence between marchers and security forces at Drumcree church in their attempt to do so.

Seeking Younger Audience

'Jerry Springer — the Opera'

The hit stage show "Jerry Springer — the Opera" is staying in London, with top ticket prices kept low to encourage a younger audience, theater officials said Friday.

The critically acclaimed production, based on Springer's tell-all TV show, will open at the Cambridge Theatre in Covent Garden in London's West End on Oct. 14. It has already had a sell-out run at the National Theatre.

Producers are offering 35,000 top-price tickets at a reduced rate. "We think it is vitally important to get more young people into the theater and it is a show which has proved hugely appealing to a younger audience," a theater spokesman said.

Flies Replica Of 1853 Glider

Richard Branson

Millionaire businessman Richard Branson has fleetingly re-enacted the first manned flight in a fixed-wing aircraft after he took to the air in a replica of Sir George Cayley's historic 1853 glider.

"Brilliant. We've done it, we've done it," Branson said on Saturday after getting airborne for the very briefest of flights in his replica glider.

The entrepreneur, also a keen balloonist, sported a 19th century braid-trimmed coat and lace cravat for the flight in the same field that Cayley's glider took off in -- at Brompton Dale near Scarborough in Yorkshire.

The original glider was flown by Cayley's coachman John Appleby, who laid claim to being the world's first pilot in a fixed-wing aircraft when he flew the glider for 153 metres and crash-landed in a field.

Cayley's glider flight came fifty years before America's Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, made the world's first successful flight in a powered aircraft in 1903.

NEA Gives Colorado Warning

$613,600 Grant

The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded Colorado more than $600,000, backing off a threat to withhold the money over the state's decision to slash arts funding.

In making the $613,600 award Thursday, the NEA warned it will keep close watch to make sure federal standards are being met and made clear that other states shouldn't expect grant money if they behave as Colorado did.

The Legislature cut funds for the state arts council from $1 million to $200,000.

NEA Chairman Dana Gioia said Colorado's award is not meant to set a precedent.

Budget crises in virtually every state have led to major cutbacks in arts funding. Gioia said state governments have cut arts spending an average of 21 percent over the past two years.

Meets Horse That Inspired 'Spirit'

Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff of Disney's "Lizzie McGuire" became starstruck when she met another film celebrity — the real-life horse who inspired the animated stallion known as "Spirit."

The 15-year-old actress and horse lover met the model for Dreamworks' animated adventure, "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," at a wild horse sanctuary Friday in Santa Barbara County.

She posed for photographs with the horse, also named Spirit, for an upcoming book about celebrities and horses.

The teenager, who is in the middle of filming "Cinderella," also agreed to become an official youth ambassador for the Return to Freedom sanctuary ranch, home to more than 100 rescued wild horses.

Selling Fear In LA

Sharks

Great White sharks may have been sighted off a popular Los Angeles beach in the last few days, to the delight of breathless TV newscasters looking for news on slow summer days.

"There are sharks in the ocean off our coast," Capt. Garth Manning of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguard Division said. "There have always been sharks off our coast. And we have never had a shark attack in Los Angeles County."

Manning was responding to reports on local television that Great Whites had been spotted by swimmers about 150 yards off popular Will Rogers State Beach.

"If they are Great White sharks they are only about 5 feet in length and they feed on small fish, they do not feed on people," Canning said. "But it's difficult to tell if they are because it's difficult to tell a juvenile Great White from a juvenile Mako."

He's A Singer, Not A Thinker

Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins says the mood of the country is right where it should be on this July 4th holiday after declaring a U.S. victory in the recent war with Iraq. "Always makes for a good 4th Of July comin' off of administering a fresh ass-whoopin' to somebody," says Adkins. "You know, flex some muscle and slap some folks around and then set off some fireworks."

Adkins says that despite the U.S. military's inability to find weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq, he fully supported America's actions. "It should be a good 4th Of July, you know?" Adkins says. "Everybody's feelin' pretty patriotic these days. There's startin' to be some questions about the whole thing, though. I'm startin' to get a little nervous about it actually, you know--not finding the WMD's and all that. I don't care if they ever existed or not. What we did needed doing."

Australia Police Shut Down Film

'Ken Park'

Police shut down a public screening of a U.S. movie banned in Australia because of its explicit sex and violence, sparking outrage from free speech advocates.

"Ken Park," a provocative film by "Kids" director Larry Clark and Edward Lachman, catalogues the dysfunctional lives of teenage skateboarders in the suburbs of Visalia, Calif.

Its underage sex scenes and graphic violence led Australian authorities to refuse it a classification — effectively banning it from cinemas across the country.

To protest the move, about 500 people attended a public viewing of the movie late Wednesday in the upscale Sydney suburb of Balmain.

No one was arrested, but police seized the DVD on stage and took the names of four people who admitted to pressing the play button, among them movie critic Margaret Pomeranz and Australian Broadcasting Corp. broadcaster Julie Rigg. If they are charged with illegally screening the banned film, they face a maximum sentence of a year in prison.
