When [Mitt Romney] took office, Massachusetts had a lot of room for improvement: it ranked 37th out of 50 nationally in job creation. Romney ran for election on his promise to do better - as he's running and promising now. After four years of applying his skills, Massachusetts had actually fallen from its not-great 37th out of 50 to a near-worst 47th out of 50. … under his Democratic successor, Massachusetts now ranks 11th out of 50 for job creation, nicely near the top.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Yusuf Islam was still Cat Stevens back in 1971 when he had his first US Top 10 hit. What was it?

   "Peace Train"                                                      Source

"Peace Train" is the title of a 1971 hit song by Cat Stevens, taken from his album Teaser and the Firecat. The song climbed to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the week of October 9, 1971, becoming Stevens' first US Top 10 hit. The song also spent three weeks at #1 on the adult contemporary chart.        Source

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
"Wild World" only made it to 11 that year, but "Peace Train" hit #7.

Oh, yeah... Almost forgot the Trivia thing. Well, it's 'Peace train' or 'Moon Shadow'. I'm too tired to look it up. Just got back from "Maddie Muffin's" dance recital. What a production! Well over 200 kids in 55 separate routines in 2 Acts. 4 hours long. The studio, Miss Lore's, is a regional phenomenon. She's sent dancers to Broadway and one of the 'graduates' introduced tonight is going to perform at Disney World as a regular. All the other 'young lady graduates' (8) are going on to college. Pre-Med, Pre-Law, Biology... They were introduced at the start. 9 high school seniors ladies with over 120 years of dancing between them. The show was done in the old restored Art-Deco Temple Theater in Saginaw that hosts big-name acts (I saw Gordon Lightfoot and Mary Chapin Carpenter there). Those dancers, ages 4-18, were awesome... everything from single interpretive performances to masses of pre-teens hand springing and cart wheeling around to modern music, run off-stage and then back on. Classical ballet in pairs and groups, too. The costumes were awesome... as was the show. I had no idea it was going to be like this. I was amazed and loved every minute of it. It wasn't a recital, it was a production... Again awesome. "Maddie Muffin" turns 5 next month and starts tap this summer and is signed up for 2 classes this Fall, too. Thanks for reading...

Haiti Auction

Cannes

Guests at Cannes have bid up to €200,000 ($255,656) at a Haiti fundraiser for items including a Bono-autographed guitar as the film festival's glitzy, global spotlight turned to charity.

It was the first time the French Riviera festival has attracted attention for a cause not connected with a movie.

Actor Sean Penn, director Paul Haggis and model Petra Nemcova brought their individual charities together for a black-tie dinner Friday evening to benefit their organizations and renew attention to the Caribbean country. Designer Giorgio Armani co-hosted the gala.

Penn earlier in the day tried to turn the conversation to Haiti, hosting a fundraiser for the earthquake-ravaged and poverty-stricken country.

Penn, a Cannes veteran of numerous films- including last year's Palme d'Or winner, "The Tree of Life," posed for photographers ahead of a press conference, and appeared ill at ease with the celebrity-fawning that often comes along with the festival.

Reacts To Getting Fired

Dan Harmon

"Community" creator Dan Harmon will not return as showrunner for the show's upcoming fourth season.

Harmon has been replaced by "Happy Endings" scribes Moses Port and David Guarascio, after Sony Pictures Television opted not to renew Harmon's contract.

The writer/producer -- who had publicly feuded with series star Chevy Chase in recent weeks -- addressed the situation late Friday night in a post on his personal blog, writing, "I got fired."

"Why'd Sony want me gone? I can't answer that because I've been in as much contact with them as you have. They literally haven't called me since the season four pickup, so their reasons for replacing me are clearly none of my business," Harmon wrote in the post titled, "Hey, Did I Miss Anything?" on Friday. "'Community' is their property, I only own ten percent of it, and I kind of don't want to hear what their complaints are because I'm sure it would hurt my feelings even more now that I'd be listening for free."

Spoleto Festival Celebrates

Philip Glass

The Spoleto Festival USA opens its 36th season Friday and among the planned performances is an opera by American composer Philip Glass to commemorate his 75th birthday and his long relationship with the internationally known arts festival.

The Charleston festival is staging the American premiere of "Kepler," about the famed German astronomer Johannes Kepler. Only the score has previously been performed in this country.

"We had been talking about various different things and this seemed the most appropriate," said festival General Director Nigel Redden, who first met the composer 40 years ago. "It's the American stage premiere but it's also the premiere of a new version and it's in English. Philip, I think, was anxious to have it done in English to make it more accessible."

Glass has had a long relationship with Spoleto. Among other performances over the years, the first American production of his "Book of Longing," based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen was performed in 2007. A year earlier, a minimalist fanfare by Glass was performed at the opening ceremonies on a so-called car-illon. The car-illon consisted of a line of BMWs, each with a speaker on the roof and a license plate displaying the note it played.

The Spoleto Festival USA was founded here in 1977 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti as a companion to his Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. He left the Charleston festival in 1993 in a dispute over his successor and died five years ago at age 95, still estranged from the festival he started here.

North Korea's most famous accordion quintet has added a new 80s-era pop song to their repertoire: A-ha's "Hunting High and Low."

The North Korean students shot to YouTube fame earlier this year with their spirited rendition of "Take on Me." They were joined Thursday by North Korean and Norwegian musicians for a concert in Pyongyang to mark Norway's national day.

Morten Traavik, the artist who introduced them to A-ha, was back in Pyongyang after bringing the musicians to perform in Norway in February.

Lead accordionist Choe Hyang Hwa, 17, told The Associated Press she was happy to be reunited with the Norwegian musicians.

Slaps Kissy Journalist

Will Smith

Hollywood star Will Smith slapped a male television reporter who he said tried to kiss him on the lips as he walked down the red carpet for the Moscow premiere of "Men in Black III."

The reporter from the Ukrainian television channel 1+1, Vitalii Sediuk, made headlines at the Venice Film Festival in September when he presented a bouquet of clearly unappreciated purple hydrangeas to Madonna and called her "my princess."

Smith was even less charmed by the reporter, who approached him on the carpet outside the movie theater on Friday night and tried to kiss him.

"C'mon man, what the hell is your problem buddy?" Smith said as he pushed Serdiuk away and slapped him lightly across the cheek with the back of his left hand.

He said Serdiuk kissed him on the mouth, but it was not clear whether the reporter intended to do so or was aiming for his cheek as Smith swiveled to avoid him.

Misogynist Softens Tone, Changes Nothing

Benny The Rat

Pope Benedict on Friday held out an olive branch to American Roman Catholic nuns, who are reeling from a stinging Vatican report that criticized them as being feminist and politicized.

In a reference to the malaise felt by many American nuns after the report issued last month, he said he hoped that "this moment of discernment will bear abundant spiritual fruit for the revitalization and strengthening of their communities in fidelity to Christ and the Church ..."

A month ago, the Vatican's doctrinal department, which the pope headed for many years before his election in 2005, issued a blistering report on the activity of the majority of American nuns.

Last month's report prompted much criticism of the Vatican attempt to rein in the nuns, who were seen by many as helping the image of the Catholic Church in the United States at a time when it was engulfed the scandal over sexual abuse of minors by priests and accusations and bishops covered it up.

American nuns and U.S. bishops have been at odds over several issues social issues. They supported President Barack Obama's health care reform which the bishops opposed it.

ANC Fumes Over Art

S.Africa

South Africa's governing party said Thursday it will demand the removal of a painting from an exhibition by one of the nation's best-known artists that ridicules the party and the president with graphic and provocative imagery.

Brett Murray's sculptures and paintings, in an exhibition that opened at a major Johannesburg gallery last week titled "Hail to the Thief II," are an "abuse of freedom of artistic expression," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu said in a statement Thursday. He added ANC lawyers will go to court to force the Goodman Gallery to remove a painting of ANC leader President Jacob Zuma from the exhibition and from its website.

The painting that most angered Mthembu is a black, red and yellow acrylic on canvas priced at 120,000 rand (about $15,000) called "The Spear." In a style reminiscent of Andy Warhol's brightly colored Marilyn Monroe portraits, it depicts Zuma in a suit and what could be a codpiece accentuating his genitals. Some observers say it depicts Zuma exposing his genitals.

Other work in the show recalls Soviet-era propaganda posters, and twists political slogans to acerbic effect. In an essay accompanying the exhibit, curators say the work forms "part of a vitriolic and succinct censure of bad governance and are (Murray's) attempts to humorously expose the paucity of morals and greed within the ruling elite."

A silkscreen in the show has the silhouette of a machine-gun toting guerrilla with Murray's own version of the well-known last words of Solomon Mahlangu, an ANC militant who was hanged by the apartheid government in 1979: "Tell my people that I love them and that they must continue the struggle for Chivas Regal ... and kick-backs."

Conundrum Hot Springs & The Frozen Cows

Colorado

A popular hot springs area in Colorado will remain open after U.S. Forest Service rangers carved up several frozen cows in an attempt to prevent the carcasses from contaminating the water.

But Scott Snelson, a ranger in the White River National Forest, is still warning hikers that cow feces is in and around Conundrum Hot Springs near Aspen and "going up there may not be as pleasant an experience as people once enjoyed."

The Aspen Daily News reports Saturday that Forest Service officials also were concerned the carcasses would attract bears.

Crews cut up 11 dead cows that were found frozen near the springs and inside a nearby cabin. Rangers believe the cows wandered into the cabin during a snowstorm but couldn't find their way out.

App Scans Bar-Goers' Faces

SceneTap

A watchful eye has arrived on San Francisco's bar scene, but not to keep you in check. It just wants to check you out.

A new app launched this weekend that will scan the faces of patrons in 25 bars across the city to determine their ages and genders. Would-be customers can then check their smartphones for real-time updates on the crowd size, average age and men-to-women mix to decide whether the scene is to their liking.

The Austin, Texas-based makers of SceneTap say the app doesn't identify specific individuals or save personal information. But in a city known for its love of both libations and civil liberties, a backlash erupted even before the first cameras were switched on from bar-goers who said they would boycott any venue with SceneTap installed.

SceneTap's ability to guess how old people are and whether they're men or women relies on advances in a field known as biometrics. A camera at the door snaps your picture, and software maps your features to a grid. By measuring distances such as the length between the nose and the eyes and the eyes and the ears, an algorithm matches your dimensions to a database of averages for age and gender.

SceneTap CEO Cole Harper says the app doesn't invade patrons' privacy because the only data it stores is their estimated ages and genders and the time they arrived - not their images or measurements.

Welcome!

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.
Make yourself home, take your shoes off...
Go ahead, scratch it if it itches.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican hypocrites?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?

In other words, submissions are welcome.
