Purple Gene Reviews

'Love Object'

Purple Genes' review of the movie "Love Object" (2003) Directed by first timer Robert Parigi:

I wrote a song a long time ago called "Synthea"….a little keyboard driven dance tune about a demented dude who lived alone in a castle….he orders a Blow Up "Party Doll" that he ends up falling in love with. Well I was up late scanning ShoW. And I saw my song come to life in an odd ball Psycho/slasher/love story about a guy who spends $10,000.00 for a true to life, anatomically correct, made to specification foam fuck fantasy doll named "NIKKI"….but when he opens the crate, he gets a lot more than he bargained for……….

Kenneth (Desmond Harrington - "The Messenger; The Story of Joan of Arc" - "Ghost Ship" - "Dragnet") is a technical instruction manual writer and works in a clinical assembly line office where they crank out uncreative crap on deadlines…..Lisa (Melissa Sagemiller - "Get Over It" - "Standing Still" - "Life on the Ledge") gets a "Temp" job there as a typist…..Lisa has emotions…. unlike everyone else working in the office and she catches Kenneth's eye. But Kenneth is a SHY loner and instead of connecting with Lisa, he goes back home to his batch hole and ends up ordering an expensive lifelike made to order sex doll named Nikki….When the doll arrives in a crypt like crate, Kenneth shoves it into his flat and opens it up and begins dressing her to look just like Lisa !!!

Well a real sick relationship develops between Kenneth and Nikki and he becomes obsessed with all the "technical" details….hair, clothes, make-up etc…..But then something happens at work….Lisa throws a fit and is about to be fired….but Kenneth steps in and saves her job and agrees to have dinner with her…..Oh shit…Lisa takes Kenneth home and they drink wine and dance and Lisa gets turned on and so does Kenneth and they end up Boning on the couch…and Kenneth keeps watching the clock…because he "knows" Nikki will be waiting UP for him…..he leaves and when he gets home sure enough "Norman Bates" starts talking to Nikki and she is Jealous….This is where the movie goes from a psycho love story something else…….

Lisa finds out that Kenneth has a blow-up doll that he dresses like her and dumps him. Kenneth's boss Novak (Rip Torn - "Baby Doll" - "Steel Cowboy" - "Larry Sanders") fires him for not being productive and Kenneth's' next door neighbor/apartment manager Radley (Udo Kier - "Andy Warhol's Flesh for Frankenstein" - "Spermula" - "Blade") can hear all the weird shit going through the common wall. So Kenneth gets pissed at Nikki for screwing up his relationship with Lisa (it's always the womans' fault !) and decides to kill her, cut her up and kick her out !..He's going crazy….so he goes out and kidnaps Lisa and brings her back to his apartment, ties her up and tortures her……

SPOILER ALERT:

Novak starts hearing terrible noises next door as Kenneth is trying to kill Lisa and so he calls the police. But Lisa gets away from Kenneth just as he is draining her blood and as she is poised over his strapped in torso and gets ready to murder the misogynistic mother fucker….the cops break in and shoot HER !!

Cut to the end of the movie….Kenneth gets his job back and a $10,000.00 bonus…just enough for him to buy another Nikki doll !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Purple Gene gives "Love Object" 5 phony fingers up out of 10 for not having the Chick come out on top!

U.S. Military Detains

Cameraman

A cameraman carrying CBS press credentials was detained in Iraq earlier this week on suspicion of insurgent activity, the U.S. military said Friday, while the network issued a statement saying it was investigating the incident.

The cameraman suffered minor injuries Tuesday during a battle between U.S. soldiers and suspected insurgents, and was standing next to an alleged insurgent who was killed during the shootout, the military said.

The military issued a statement at the time saying the cameraman was shot because his equipment was mistaken for a weapon. But on Friday, the military said the cameraman was detained because there was probable cause to believe he posed "an imperative threat to coalition forces."

In a statement released Friday, CBS News said the man had worked as a freelancer for CBS for three months and that he was videotaping for the network when he was shot.

Keeps Sunday Time Slot

'Grey's Anatomy'

The new ABC drama "Grey's Anatomy," which has proved a strong Sunday night partner for "Desperate Housewives," will keep its time slot and cut short the season for "Boston Legal."

Both "Grey's Anatomy" and "Boston Legal," a reworking of the long-running ABC series "The Practice," were winning the time slot among total viewers and with advertiser-favored adults ages 18 to 49.

But "Grey's Anatomy" has averaged 17 million viewers compared with 12.5 million for the legal drama from veteran producer David E. Kelley ("Ally McBeal," "Boston Public").

The blow for "Boston Legal" has been softened by the fact it will get a run of 27 episodes next season, which includes the five that were to air this season.

Donates $2M

Tom Clancy

Author Tom Clancy, who reaped millions from blockbusters such as "Patriot Games" and "The Hunt for Red October," wants people to see life a little more clearly.

To that end, he has donated $2 million to fund a professorship in ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The first doctor to hold the seat being funded by Clancy's donation, Dr. Terrence P. O'Brien, has treated the writer, who was diagnosed in 2001 with pathological myopia. The rare type of nearsightedness, in which the eyeball continues to elongate, can lead to profound vision loss.

G.O.P. Hypocrisy Wedding News

Arthur J. Finkelstein

Arthur J. Finkelstein, a prominent Republican consultant who has directed a series of hard-edged political campaigns to elect conservatives in the United States and Israel over the last 25 years, said Friday that he had married his male partner in a civil ceremony at his home in Massachusetts.

Mr. Finkelstein, 59, who has made a practice of defeating Democrats by trying to demonize them as liberal, said in a brief interview that he had married his partner of 40 years to ensure that the couple had the same benefits available to married heterosexual couples.

Some of Mr. Finkelstein's associates said they were startled to learn that this prominent American conservative had married a man, given his history with the party, especially at a time when many Republican leaders, including resident Bush, have campaigned against same-sex marriage and proposed amending the Constitution to ban it. Mr. Finkelstein has been allied over the years with Republicans who have fiercely opposed gay rights measures, including former Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina, and has been the subject of attacks by gay rights activists who have accused him of hypocrisy. He was identified as gay in a Boston Magazine article in 1996.

Indiana's 'Village Idiot'

Mark Carmichael

The competition was fierce and foolish, but a man who accidentally sawed through a live wire and topped that by wrecking his truck hours after buying it more than earned the honorary title "Village Idiot."

Mark Carmichael's blunders won him the good-natured award that's been handed out for years in the tiny Brown County town of Story. The winner is whoever gets the most votes from regulars at the Story Inn's saloon.

The bar's patrons had more than enough evidence to give him the honor - not least of which was the pig roast incident.

"I cooked a couple of hogs out there on some bed springs once," he explained to a dismayed visitor.

Carmichael had cut the carcasses in half with a chain saw, then used a pitchfork to turn the meat as it cooked. He ended up serving up the portions with a hatchet.

"People loved it," he said. "We called it Louisiana style."

Oldest Thing On Earth

Speck of Crystal

Call it much ado about almost nothing. To create buzz about an otherwise arcane subject, the University of Wisconsin-Madison showed off a tiny speck of zircon crystal believed to be the oldest known piece of Earth at about 4.4 billion years old.

Saturday's daylong celebration was capped with "The Rock Concert" by jazz musicians who composed music to try to answer the question: What does 4.4 billion years old sound like?

Though scientists acknowledged there wasn't much to see, spectators used a microscope to check out the tiny grain, which measures less than two human hairs in diameter.

After the festivities the object will return to its native Australia with Simon Wilde, professor at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia, who made its discovery in 1984. The sample will eventually be put on display at a natural history museum in that country.
