Howard Zinn: America's Blinders (progressive.org)
Now that most Americans no longer believe in the war, now that they no longer trust Bush and his Administration, now that the evidence of deception has become overwhelming (so overwhelming that even the major media, always late, have begun to register indignation), we might ask: How come so many people were so easily fooled?

Bill Moyers: 'A culture of corruption' (commondreams.org)
Let's Save Our Democracy by Getting Money Out of Politics

John Dean: Bush's Unprecedented Arrogance (FindLaw.com; Posted on Alternet.com)
In the end, this issue is going to be resolved by the 2006 midterm election. If Republicans lose control of either the House or Senate, the investigations of the Bush/Cheney White House will begin. It won't be pretty. It will make dealing with lying about sex look like High School hazing. It will even make Richard Nixon look like a piker when it comes to staying within the law.

Bruce Reed: Look who's winning the battle of ideas (slate.com)
After two decades of practice, American conservatives now seem to have the art of cognitive dissonance down to a science. They believe in smaller government, even as they make it bigger. They believe that cutting taxes will balance the budget, even as those tax cuts (once again) send the deficit soaring. They think of conservatism as a font of new ideas, even as they keep making the same mistakes pursuing the same old, tired ones.

MARTHA ULLMAN WEST: Dancers as Living Archives (chronicle.com)
Dancers are the living archives of dance history. Long after they leave the stage, in their minds and muscles they hold the memory of form, rhythm, mood, and intent, constituting an irreplaceable resource for performers, historians, and frequently the choreographers themselves.

'The Science Guy'

Bill Nye

Audience members who expected to see Bill Nye "The Science Guy" conduct experiments and wow their children received quite a surprise Wednesday when Nye spoke at McLennan Community College.

The Emmy-winning scientist angered a few audience members when he criticized literal interpretation of the biblical verse Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights - the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."

He pointed out that the sun, the "greater light," is but one of countless stars and that the "lesser light" is the moon, which really is not a light at all, rather a reflector of light.

A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence.

"We believe in a God!" exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three young children.

Nye also was critical of what he said was governmental agencies' lack of action, even lack of understanding, in protecting the Earth from global warming and wasted resources.

Call For Bush Impeachment

Vermont Democrats

Democratic Party leaders in Vermont on Saturday passed a motion asking Congress to immediately begin impeachment proceedings against resident Bush.

The measure asks the Republican-controlled House to pass articles of impeachment against Bush for misleading the nation on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and engaging in illegal wiretapping, among other charges.

Democratic state committees in Wisconsin, New Mexico, Nevada and North Carolina have taken similar steps.

Prison Official Punished Over Screening

'Brokeback Mountain'

A Massachusetts correctional officer is being disciplined for showing the gay cowboy movie "Brokeback Mountain" to inmates at the state's largest prison because his boss determined that the film includes content inappropriate for a prison setting.

Massachusetts Department of Correction spokeswoman Diane Wiffin said Saturday that the action was not related to the critically acclaimed film's plot involving a gay love affair.

"It was not the subject matter. It was the graphic nature of sexually explicit scenes," Wiffin said.

She said the officer, whom she declined to identify, failed to follow prison guidelines that require staff who schedule films to review them in advance for excessive violence, nudity or sex, as well as scenes involving assaults on correctional staff.

Official Wants to Offer Reward

Notorious B.I.G.

A city councilman wants to offer a $50,000 public reward for leads in the unsolved murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G. Councilman Dennis Zine proposed Friday to offer the reward for 60 days.

"I am hopeful someone will come forward with information which will lead to the eventual apprehension of the murderers involved in this case," Zine said in a statement.

Zine's motion was under review by a council committee. A 1997 measure offering a $25,000 reward expired after several months.

Beatles

Capitol Records will be replacing first-run copies of its new Beatles collection in order to remedy a manufacturing mistake.

On Tuesday (April 11), the label will release "The Beatles: The Capitol Albums, Vol. 2," which includes the four Beatles albums issued by Capitol in 1965: "The Early Beatles," "Beatles VI," "Help!" and the American version of "Rubber Soul."

What makes this collection especially appealing to fans is that all tracks have been digitally remastered and are presented in both stereo and mono. Of these, many appear in stereo for the very first time on CD.

Unfortunately, Capitol realized after manufacturing that the original mono masters from "Beatles VI" and "Rubber Soul" never made it onto the initial pressing of this collection.

Sued by Costume Designer

Melanie Griffith

A designer sued Melanie Griffith for allegedly refusing to pay nearly $26,000 for dressing the actress and her daughters for the Golden Globes Awards and reneging on a promise to mention his name on the red carpet.

In the lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Niklas J. Palm claimed he designed dresses for Griffith and her daughters Dakota Johnson and Stella Banderas to wear to the January event.

The lawsuit claimed breach of oral and written contract and intentional misrepresentation. It also names Griffith's husband, Antonio Banderas and their production companies as defendants.

Rochester International Jazz Festival

James Brown & Etta James

James Brown and Etta James will join Woody Allen and 600 other jazz musicians and singers playing at this year's Rochester International Jazz Festival.

The fifth annual, nine-day festival opens June 9 with Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band playing a benefit concert at the Eastman Theater for New Orleans' dislocated jazz community. The 70-year-old filmmaker and clarinet player rarely performs in large venues or outside New York City.

The festival will feature about 170 performances ranging from formal concerts to free street gigs. Brown, the 72-year-old Godfather of Soul, will be the top draw at the Eastman Theater on June 10. Etta James, best known for her 1960 version of At Last, will take the stage June 16 with The Roots Band.

Author Fences-In Home

Dan Brown

Dan Brown, best-selling author of "The Da Vinci Code," is working to put up a wrought-iron fence around his home to keep out uninvited guests. It would sit atop a 2-foot-high stone wall and rise up no more than 6 feet, according to a letter his attorney presented to Rye selectmen recently.

Police Chief Alan Gould said Brown was concerned that the heightened attention brought on by a lawsuit claiming he stole ideas from a nonfiction book might create security concerns and could possibly lead to trespassers approaching his home. A judge in London ruled Friday in Brown's favor.

"We shared those concerns," Gould said. "Whether it's the paparazzi or someone who wants to pour goat's blood on the steps or just someone who wants a picture, it's our job to offer him and his family the same protection we would anyone else in town."

Challenge Traditional Spas

Beer Baths

Wearing only his gold necklace and grasping a large beer, Andrei relaxed voluptuously in a herbal beer bath, the latest Czech "therapeutic" offering which the rich Moscovite spa lover would not miss for anything.

The Russian businessmen, a frequent visitor to the renowned Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) spa in west Bohemia -- the destination of Europe's kings, emperors and nobility at the turn of the 20th century -- could not resist the temptation to try the country's first "beer spa" in the nearby town of Chodova Plana.

Owners of the town's Chodovar brewery, still producing along artisanal lines, launched the beer baths with the target of tempting tourists to their new hotel rather than boosting production.
