Marc Dion: Me and Kenny (Creators Syndicate)
But when you're minimum wage, things happen to you and you never know why. One day, they stopped sending the free food down to us. A manager told me it was because we took too long in the break room on free food days. Kenny became visibly thinner. We talked about it, me and Farm Boy and Big Lo and the rest of us, and we came to the conclusion that the free sandwiches were the only reason he'd been able to grow a little belly. And when they debate increasing the minimum wage, that's what I remember.

Orgasms. I invented them when I was 12. I was alone in the shower, my bar of Irish Spring was looking really good, I was warm, damp, and feeling adventurous. It was magical and only slightly shameful, the way I insist on all my orgasms being to this very day. Later I found out other people had stolen my idea before I could monetize it, but that's OK. I'm a giver.

Genius has no need of demographic tables. Shakespeare would not have seen many examples of age-related dementia at a time when average life expectancy hardly reached 40.

It's hard to know quite what to expect from an encounter with Spike Jonze. The first time I met him, for his 1999 directorial debut Being John Malkovich, he was cripplingly shy - barely able to get out a word. But today, dressed in a jacket and tie, and sitting in the early evening gloom in a London hotel, he's quite the host. "You're so much smarter than I am," he says when I articulate one question about his new film Her. Well, that's one way to get your interviewer on side.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, all three members of this group were born on the Isle of Man. Who are they?

      Bee Gees                                                      Source

The Bee Gees were a pop music group that was founded in 1958. The group's line-up consisted of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The trio were successful for most of their decades of recording music, but they had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as a rock act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and as prominent performers of the disco music era in the late 1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies; Robin's clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry's R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the late 1970s and 1980s. They wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists.

Born on the Isle of Man to English parents, the Gibb brothers lived in Chorlton, Manchester, England, until the late 1950s. The family then moved to Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia, where the brothers began their music careers. After achieving their first chart success in Australia with "Spicks and Specks" (their 12th single), they returned to the United Kingdom in January 1967 where producer Robert Stigwood began promoting them to a worldwide audience.

The Bee Gees' career record sales total more than 220 million ranking them among the best-selling music artists of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997; the presenter of the award to "Britain's first family of harmony" was Brian Wilson, historical leader of the Beach Boys, a "family act" also featuring three harmonising brothers. The Bee Gees' Hall of Fame citation says "Only Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have outsold the Bee Gees."        Source

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
   Bee Gees.

This is a bit misleading, since the 1967 breakthrough version of the group included members besides the Gibbs.

New York Mining Disaster will haunt my dreams forever. That would be the Bee Gees (brothers Gibb) Their disco offerings contained one oddly profound lyric, for me. In More Than a Woman they sing "We can live forever just a moment at a time." That's the only way one could live forever without going berserk.

The Disco Band "The Bee Gees" are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? What the Fuck? I hated them when they were wanna be Beatles and loathed them for their 4/4 boredom. Disco sucked and they don't belong in the ROCK & ROLL HOF!!! Ahhhhh, they ain't "Cannibal Corpse" or "Deicide"!! My son took me to see these bands. Extreme R&R, better than any pussy ass Disco Band.

Lois Stayin' Alive In Oregon replied:
Oh the Bee Gees! We owe them such a debt, they brought so much joy to this tired old world, and not just Disco; "I Started A Joke", a beautiful ballad used to great effect in the sound-track of "Zoolander". Thank you for everything, guys.

P.S. @Sally...I've always loved that joke about cannibals eating the clown, because it is funny, not just because I hate clowns. Try this joke out on your kids: Know why chickens can't talk? Because they don't wanna use fowl language! That joke KILLED when I was 10 years old.

Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil

Punxsutawney Phil, the world's most famous fuzzy forecaster, will pop out of his burrow Sunday morning in western Pennsylvania to tell the nation what our weather will be like for the next six weeks.

Will we have an early spring, or will winter drag on until mid-March?

According to folklore, if it's cloudy when the groundhog emerges, the critter will leave his burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If it's a sunny day, Phil will supposedly see his shadow and, frightened, retreat back into his burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks.

The forecast from the National Weather Service is for a cloudy day, with some rain and snow possible, but Phil can be very fickle, so it's hard to know what he'll do.

Since 1887, the groundhog has seen his shadow 100 times (meaning six more weeks of winter), and not seen it 17 times to predict an early spring. Now in its 128th year, the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney has been growing in popularity, and is even attracting an overseas crowd.

Okemah Project

Woody Guthrie

Work on the rebuild of folk legend Woody Guthrie's boyhood home is scheduled to begin in mid-March so it can to be finished before an annual summer festival that celebrates the singer's life, a project manager said Friday.

Dan Riedemann, who is in charge of the rebuild, also said the project in the town of Okemah has generated around $450,000 in pledges from the public for the reconstruction of the 1860s-era property, which he's budgeted at $600,000.

"This thing is blowing up through the roof," said Riedemann, who wants to debut the completed house July 12, during Okemah's annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival - dubbed WoodyFest - which attracts thousands of enthusiasts from around the world to the town of 3,300.

Once shunned by his hometown and state, Guthrie has enjoyed a renaissance in Oklahoma in recent years, as a new generation is introduced to his songs and activism. The singer's relatives have given their blessing for the project on his boyhood home and many plan to attend its unveiling in July.

Kiev's Masked Musician

Pianist-Extremist

Masked men in combat gear have become a feature of the anti-government protest camp that has taken over central Kiev, but one stands out for his weapon of choice - the piano.

For the Pianist-Extremist, whose impromptu performances on the frozen street outside City Hall have delighted fellow demonstrators, the paramilitary costume, like his stage name, is an ironic barb aimed at Ukrainian authorities who condemn those demanding closer ties with Europe as dangerous militants.

"They call us extremists and criminals, but this is not the case. People are here for patriotism, not for money or violence," the mystery maestro told Reuters on Saturday, politely declining to reveal the face beneath the ski mask.

With the protests now in their third month since President Viktor Yanukovich spurned an EU trade deal in favour of a deal with Ukraine's old master Moscow, his music makes a pleasant change to the banging of oil drums that has been the soundtrack of the movement around the square known as Maidan.

"The music helps people and strengthens their morale," the anonymous virtuoso said as he picked out a piece by contemporary Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi on a battered old upright painted in the national colours of blue and yellow. "It is the spirit of the revolution."

Egyptian Jon Stewart

Bassem Youssef

The popular Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef has signed a contract with the MBC Group and a new episode of his show will air later this week, a spokesman for the Dubai-based network said Saturday.

The private broadcaster CBC suspended Youssef's show last fall after the season's first episode. It was highly critical of the nationalist fervor gripping Egypt after the military overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, which followed millions-strong protests calling for his removal.

CBC said the satirist had violated its editorial policy and contractual obligations, and that he upset Egyptian sensibilities by attacking "symbols of the state." Government and presidential officials at the time said the decision was a private issue between Youssef and the station.

Youssef, who is often compared to U.S. comedian Jon Stewart for his scathing take on current events, told The Associated Press in early January that he planned to bring the show back.

MBC spokesman Mazen Hayek said Saturday the network has been in serious talks with Youssef for the past few weeks, and that the show's production team will also be making the move. He says the new episode will air on Friday, Feb. 7.

Musical Planned For London

'Back to the Future'

Director Robert Zemeckis is literally going back into the past for his next project - a stage musical of "Back to the Future."

Producers said Thursday night that a show adapted from the sci-fi comedy franchise starring Michael J. Fox will open in London's West End in 2015, the 30th anniversary of the film. A Broadway run is a possibility if the new musical flies as well as the film's specially equipped DeLorean.

The new musical will have a book by Zemeckis, Bob Gale and Jamie Lloyd, and new music and lyrics by composer Alan Silvestri and songwriter and producer Glen Ballard. Lloyd will direct.

Oscar-winner Zemeckis has directed all "Back to the Future" films, as well as "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," ''Forrest Gump," "The Polar Express" and "The Terminal."

Pens Open Letter

Dylan Farrow

Dylan Farrow, the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen, has written a first person account published on The New York Times' website that details her allegation that she was sexually assaulted by the film director at age 7.

Dylan Farrow Pens Open Letter

Dylan Farrow's Open Letter

What's your favorite Woody Allen movie? Before you answer, you should know: when I was seven years old, Woody Allen took me by the hand and led me into a dim, closet-like attic on the second floor of our house. He told me to lay on my stomach and play with my brother's electric train set. Then he sexually assaulted me. He talked to me while he did it, whispering that I was a good girl, that this was our secret, promising that we'd go to Paris and I'd be a star in his movies. I remember staring at that toy train, focusing on it as it traveled in its circle around the attic. To this day, I find it difficult to look at toy trains.

For as long as I could remember, my father had been doing things to me that I didn't like. I didn't like how often he would take me away from my mom, siblings and friends to be alone with him. I didn't like it when he would stick his thumb in my mouth. I didn't like it when I had to get in bed with him under the sheets when he was in his underwear. I didn't like it when he would place his head in my naked lap and breathe in and breathe out. I would hide under beds or lock myself in the bathroom to avoid these encounters, but he always found me. These things happened so often, so routinely, so skillfully hidden from a mother that would have protected me had she known, that I thought it was normal. I thought this was how fathers doted on their daughters. But what he did to me in the attic felt different. I couldn't keep the secret anymore.

When I asked my mother if her dad did to her what Woody Allen did to me, I honestly did not know the answer. I also didn't know the firestorm it would trigger. I didn't know that my father would use his sexual relationship with my sister to cover up the abuse he inflicted on me. I didn't know that he would accuse my mother of planting the abuse in my head and call her a liar for defending me. I didn't know that I would be made to recount my story over and over again, to doctor after doctor, pushed to see if I'd admit I was lying as part of a legal battle I couldn't possibly understand. At one point, my mother sat me down and told me that I wouldn't be in trouble if I was lying - that I could take it all back. I couldn't. It was all true. But sexual abuse claims against the powerful stall more easily. There were experts willing attack my credibility. There were doctors willing to gaslight an abused child.

Entire Staff Laid Off

'Tonight Show'

NBCUniversal plans to lay off the entire "Tonight Show" staff - all 164 Burbank employees - when the late-night talk show moves from California to New York City next month, TheWrap has learned.

NBCUniversal notified the California Employment Development Department last month that it will eliminate the positions, a company spokesperson told TheWrap. Layoffs will begin on Feb. 14 and be staggered through April 4.

"We have encouraged those 164 employees to take a look at jobs throughout the company and apply for them," the spokesperson told TheWrap. Those available positions include jobs at "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" in New York City.

The Burbank Leader first reported the layoffs. Job loss had been expected with the show's move to the East Coast.

Rock Topplers Charged

Utah

Two former Boy Scouts of America leaders who touched off worldwide outrage by toppling a 170-million-year-old rock formation at a Utah state park last year were charged on Friday with felony criminal mischief.

A video of the incident posted on YouTube in October showed Glenn Taylor dislodging a massive boulder from its spindly rock pedestal in Goblin Valley State Park, as fellow scout leader David Hall filmed him while laughing and singing.

Taylor, 45, is charged with felony criminal mischief and Hall, 42, faces one count of felony aiding and assisting in criminal mischief, Director of Utah State Parks Fred Hayes said in a statement.

If convicted, each man could face up to five years in prison, a fine of $5,000 and restitution for damages to Utah's protected natural resources.

Starfish have been mysteriously dying by the millions in recent months along the US west coast, worrying biologists who say the sea creatures are key to the marine ecosystem.

Scientists first started noticing the mass deaths in June 2013. Different types of starfish, also known as sea stars, were affected, from wild ones along the coast to those in captivity, according to Jonathan Sleeman, director of the US Geological Survey's National Wildlife Health Center.

The most commonly observed symptoms are white lesions on the arms of the sea star. The lesions spread rapidly, resulting in the loss of the arm. Within days, the infection consumes the creature's entire body, and it dies.

Entire populations have been wiped out in Puget Sound off the coast of Washington state, in the Salish Sea off Canada's British Columbia as well as along the coast of California. The mortality rate is estimated at 95 percent.

Scientists who have spent decades studying the local ecosystem have yet to identify the cause.

Oscar Song Decision

'Integrity'

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Saturday clarified its decision to rescind the original song nomination for "Alone Yet Not Alone," with Acad president Cheryl Boone Isaacs telling Variety "it all comes down to the integrity of the award process."

The Academy announced the revocation Wednesday, and on Saturday issued another press release giving more detail about its decision.

Contacted by Variety, Boone Isaacs said, "Every year we review the awards season process in every way, to modify, clarify, improve, and to do whatever is needed for more clarity. It all comes down to the integrity of the awards process. Everything changes constantly, including the business, the ways of communicating and the rules. We're always trying to be in front of the situation to keep the integrity of the awards process at its highest level."

Bruce Broughton, a former music-branch governor and current member of the executive committee, had emailed 70 members asking them to consider song Number 57, "Alone Yet Not Alone," from the movie of the same title. He wrote the music, with lyrics by Dennis Spiegel. The email asked for their consideration, and he attached his name to it.

The Academy considers its membership branch roster to be an official Academy list and confidential. The org does not give out its roster to others. Many campaign strategists compile their own lists, and Acad rules say it's OK to invite a member to a screening or event, but forbids anything beyond that, such as direct solicitation of votes.

Maximilian Schell

Austrian-born actor Maximilian Schell, a fugitive from Adolf Hitler who became a Hollywood favourite and won an Oscar for his role as a defence attorney in "Judgment at Nuremberg," has died. He was 83.

It was only his second Hollywood role, as defence attorney Hans Rolfe in Stanley Kramer's classic "Judgment at Nuremberg," that earned him wide international acclaim. Schell's impassioned but unsuccessful defence of four Nazi judges on trial for sentencing innocent victims to death won him the 1961 Academy Award for best actor. Schell had first played Rolfe in a 1959 episode of the television program "Playhouse 90."

Despite being type-cast for numerous Nazi-era films, Schell's acting performances in the mid-1970s also won him renewed popular acclaim, earning him a best actor Oscar nomination for "The Man in the Glass Booth" and a supporting actor nomination for his performance alongside Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave and Jason Robards in "Julia."

The son of Swiss playwright Hermann Ferdinand Schell and Austrian stage actress Noe von Nordberg, Schell was born in Vienna on Dec. 8, 1930 and raised in Switzerland after his family fled Germany's annexation of his homeland.

Schell followed in the footsteps of his older sister Maria and brother Carl, making his stage debut in 1952. He then appeared in a number of German films before relocating to Hollywood in 1958.

Maximilian made his Hollywood debut in Edward Dmytryk's "The Young Lions," a World War II drama starring Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and Dean Martin.

"First Love," adapted from the Ivan Turgenev novella - which Schell wrote, produced, directed and starred in - was nominated for an Oscar in the best foreign film category in 1970. "The Pedestrian," another movie under Schell's direction and production, received the same nomination three years later.

Perhaps Schell's most significant film as a director was his 1984 documentary on Marlene Dietrich, "Marlene," which was nominated for a best documentary Oscar. Dietrich allowed herself to be recorded but refused to be filmed, bringing out the most in Schell's talent to penetrate images and uncover reality.

Schell was also a highly successful concert pianist and conductor, performing with such luminaries as Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein, and with orchestras in Berlin and Vienna.

In the 1990s, Schell made appearances in films including "The Freshman," ''Telling Lies in America" and "Deep Impact." In 1992, he received a Golden Globe for his supporting role as Lenin alongside Robert Duvall in the 1992 HBO miniseries "Stalin".

In a documentary entitled "My Sister Maria," Schell portrayed his loving relationship with his sister, who died in 2005.
