You have to be really hard-bitten not to be taken with the Dalai Lama's charm. He came across in our meeting as so pleasant and friendly-complete with a robust sense of humor-that I was disarmed.

Mark Morford: You Say You Want A Resolution (sfgate.com)
It is, after all, all about subtle energy, shifts in awareness, the decision to move forward no matter what. It is all about focusing on micro to affect macro. This much you probably already know. In which case, this year you can simply resolve to, well, continue. To keep on, even when it all seems bleak and fraught and impossibly constricted. Because, sometimes, merely refusing to stop cultivating an unquenchable lust for beauty and truth and orgasmic life is the most profound and important thing you can resolve to do.

Jay Walljasper: Car Trouble (Ode. Posted on Alternet.org)
People everywhere are enraptured by the idea of speedy personal mobility that automobiles seem to offer -- a love affair best evoked in an anecdote told by Song Laoshi, a teacher in Beijing, to a journalist from the Guardian: "When I was a child, we used to walk miles to the nearest road and then just stand and wait. You will never guess why. We wanted a car to pass so that we could breathe in the fumes. For us, that was really exciting."

United States of Angst: Americans stressed, depressed, polls show (yahoo.com)
New Year is supposed to be a time of hope and fresh starts -- but more and more Americans seem to be stressed out, miserable and depressed, according to two new opinion polls. One long term survey shows that personal misery among Americans is at its highest levels since the early 1990s, with people saddled with woes over healthcare, unemployment, paying bills and romance.

Peter Graff: Cash pours in for student with $1 million Web idea (Reuters)
If you have an envious streak, you probably shouldn't read this. Because chances are, Alex Tew, a 21-year-old student from a small town in England, is cleverer than you. And he is proving it by earning a cool million dollars in four months on the Internet.

Staying in Minnesota

'Prairie Home Companion'

Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" won't be permanently leaving its St. Paul home after all.

The humorist said he expects to do about a dozen shows during the 2006-07 season from the Fitzgerald Theater, the longtime base of the public radio program.

The rest of the season's shows will air from the road, including a return to the Minnesota State Fair, he said.

The program had been in negotiations to do its coming New Year's Eve show in New York, he said, but that became too complicated. A deal to hold it at the Fitzgerald was worked out in 25 minutes. "The point was not lost on me," he said.

Don't Gross Out The World

Wagging The Movie Dog

Drudge

At one holiday gathering this past week, when the conversations turned to movies, one friend mentioned that her sister said she wouldn't be going to see "Kong." When he asked her why, her woman replied, "Because I read on Drudge that it was bombing."

In fact, the always hyperventilating Drudge Report first responded to the early, ecstatic reviews of "Kong" by reporting unrealistic expectations that it could challenge "Titanic" as the biggest film of all time -- a feat that no movie has come anywhere close to since "Titanic" set sail in 1997. Then, on December 16, Drudge headlined the first reports of "Kong's" less-than-record-breaking first day with the ominous words "'King' Bomb?"

The anecdote also suggests that in this media-saturated moment, Hollywood doesn't just have to worry about genuine word-of-mouth coming from moviegoers who actually attend a movie before spreading the word -- good or bad -- it also has to defend against secondary word-of-mouth based on little more than a half-baked opinion or a snarky headline.

Webmaster Matt Drudge actually tried something similar this season as "Brokeback Mountain" rode onto the scene, trying to scare the horses, if you will, with the alarmist tone of one headline that read "Hollywood Rocked: Gay Cowboy Movie Becomes an Oscar Frontrunner." In the story itself, he ratcheted up rhetoric, describing the film as "arriving with nudity and explicit gay sex scenes" as if it were just one step short of a campfire orgy. To date, though, media attempts to turn "Brokeback" into a raging controversy haven't really taken hold -- the filmmakers, a dignified bunch, never rose to the bait, and the movie has been able to speak to itself.

African-American Film Critics Association Honor 'Crash'

AAFCA

"Crash," the Los Angeles ensemble drama about the prejudices of intersecting characters, has been selected as the top film of the year by the African-American Film Critics Association.

Besides "Crash," the AAFCA chose nine other movies as the top films of the year: "The Constant Gardener," "Good Night, Good Luck," "Brokeback Mountain," "Syriana," "Walk the Line," "Hustle & Flow," "Capote," "Batman Begins" and "North Country."

The AAFCA chose as Terrence Howard as best actor for his performance in "Hustle & Flow." Felicity Huffman earned the best-actress recognition for her gender-bending role in "Transamerica."

John Singleton, the producer of "Hustle & Flow," was given the achievement honor. Singleton's other films include 2000's "Shaft," "Rosewood" and "Boyz n the Hood."

Americanized 'Ring'

Washington Opera

An Americanized version of Richard Wagner's "The Ring of the Nibelung," a series that long has been a symbol of German nationalism, will open March 25 with the Washington National Opera's production of "Das Rheingold."

The Washington company will perform all four operas of the Ring for the first time. Co-produced with the San Francisco Opera, each of the four operas will premiere in Washington.

The operas are to be sung in Wagner's original German text - he wrote the book as well as the music - and will be accompanied by surtitles in English. Surtitles, usually flashed on a screen running across the top of the stage, summarize in English the foreign language of the opera.

Rehab

Brad Renfro

Brad Renfro had his arraignment on a drug charge postponed Friday because he has entered a full-time drug rehabilitation program, his lawyer said.

The actor's lawyer, Richard Kaplan, said outside court that his client is "doing fine" in the program and will return to court Jan. 18 for his arraignment. He remains free after posting $10,000 bail.

Renfro, 23, was arrested Dec. 22 during a drug bust near Skid Row and was charged with a felony count of attempting to possess heroin.

Sued by Ex-Wife

Christian Brando

Christian Brando, son of late actor Marlon Brando, was sued by his ex-wife and his stepdaughter, who alleged he abused and threatened to kill them, their attorney said Thursday.

Deborah Brando and her 13-year-old daughter filed a lawsuit against Brando in Superior Court on Tuesday for violation of their civil rights, assault, domestic violence, battery and emotional distress.

Brando and his ex-wife met in 1990, the same year he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the shooting death of his half-sister's boyfriend Dag Drollet. Brando served five years in prison.

He and Deborah Brando moved into the home of his father, Marlon Brando, a month after the actor's death on July 1, 2004.

They married in October 2004 and divorced earlier this year.

Considering Run for Governor

Donald Trump

The New York Daily News, citing unnamed Republicans, reported Friday that Donald Trump, the billionaire real estate developer and TV personality, is considering a run for governor as a Republican.

Trump flirted with a possible run for president on the Reform Party ticket in 2000. He has also given money to Republicans and Democrats alike in state races.

Republicans are looking for a candidate with name recognition and money to take on the only announced Democratic candidate, state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Spitzer is far ahead of all candidates for governor in the early polls.

Jeans a Hot Seller in Sweden

Cheap Monday

Cheap Monday jeans are a hot commodity among young Swedes thanks to their trendy tight fit and low price, even if a few buyers are turned off by the logo: a skull with a cross turned upside down on its forehead.

"It is an active statement against Christianity," logo designer Bjorn Atldax told The Associated Press. "I'm not a Satanist myself, but I have a great dislike for organized religion."

In more religious countries, that might raise a furious response, maybe even prompt retailers to drop the brand.

Not in Sweden, a secular country that cherishes its free speech and where churchgoing has been declining for decades.
