Paul Krugman: The Medicaid Killers (New York Times)
Paul Ryan's speech Wednesday night may have accomplished one good thing: It finally may have dispelled the myth that he is a Serious, Honest Conservative. Indeed, Mr. Ryan's brazen dishonesty left even his critics breathless.

Gail Collins: Renovating Mitt Romney (New York Times)
Mike Huckabee, in an interview before his speech, compared Mitt to a nasty doctor. "If you've just been diagnosed with a brain tumor, you honestly don't care if your neurosurgeon is a jerk," he told Howard Kurtz of The Daily Beast.

BRIAN BEUTLER: Top 5 Fibs In Paul Ryan's Convention Speech (Talking Points Memo)
Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan's headlining speech at the GOP convention in Tampa Wednesday night touched on many of the election's defining issues. But it was also filled with prevarications - not just recitations of the conventions "you didn't build that" theme, but on the very policy matters that have endeared him to the political establishment in Washington.

Where some college athletes get their grades can be a mystery. Truett "Rip" Sewell, who later became a professional baseball pitcher, played sports at Vanderbilt, but the academics were too tough for him, and he dropped out. Trivia Question from Yesterday

In Alaska, what one-word term is used to refer to any non-Alaska location?

   Outside                                                      Source

In Alaska, United States, Outside or the Outside refers to any non-Alaska location. Though commonly used by Alaskans to refer to other U.S. states, it may also refer to international locations distant from Alaska, including Canada, Great Britain and Russia. The term has been in use since at least the beginning of the 20th century and is believed to be an adaptation of a similar Canadian term used in the northern portion of that country and referring to southern Canada. The expression is typically used in an adverbial phrase following some form of the word "go", but it is also used as a simple noun.

The inverse of the term, Inside, is infrequently used.        Source

Marian was first, and correct, with:
   outside

Hmmm... Apparently, the term is "Outside". That's understandable... In 'The State of Maine' (No, oh no, it's not merely 'Maine', it's always, and I mean always, 'The State of Maine' to the denizens therein, i.e. 'Mainiacs') if you were not born there you are termed to be "From Away". You can move there and reside there for 50 years and still be "From Away". Both of my daughters were born there and have '004-' Social Security numbers to prove it beyond their birth certificates (Mainiacs' SSN's start with '004-007') and they can always move back and still be 'Mainiacs'. They were born there.

Second Movie Gets New Name

"The Hobbit"

The third film in the upcoming "Hobbit" movie trilogy will be released worldwide in July 2014, the movie studios behind the venture said on Friday, and the second film now has a new name.

The third film -- "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" -- will open in movie theaters on July 18, 2014 - just seven months after the newly titled second film "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" arrives on December 13, 2013. The second film originally carried the "There and Back Again" title.

The first film, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" starring British actor Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, has already been set for a December 14, 2012 opening.

Director Peter Jackson, Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, and MGM announced in July that the 3D-film adaptation of the classic novel by J.R.R. Tolkien would be split into three films rather than the two originally envisaged.

98 Years Later

Message In A Bottle

A message in a bottle has been pulled from the ocean 98 years after it was written, and officials say it is the world's oldest of its kind.

Scottish fisherman Andrew Leaper found the letter in his nets while sailing off of Scotland's northern coast. And on Thursday, Guinness World Records confirmed that is the old message in a bottle ever found, beating the previous record holder by five years.

Amazingly, the previous record holder was found by the same boat, the Shetland-based "Copious."

In 1914, Scottish Captain C.H. Brown of the Glasgow School of Navigation released 1,890 bottles as part of a government experiment to map the undercurrents of the seas around Scotland. Each bottle contained a postcard asking the finder to record details of where the bottle was located. The letter also promises a reward of sixpence, which the AP notes no longer exists.

And it's entirely possible that the record could be broken on another voyage, as only 350 of the original bottles have been discovered.

French 'Elvis' Leaves Caribbean Hospital

Johnny Hallyday

French singer Johnny Hallyday is out of a Caribbean hospital and on his way to Los Angeles.

The 69-year-old performer whose glittery rock shows have led some to call him the "French Elvis," spent five days in a hospital on the island of Martinique. He was in the cardiac section of the hospital but sent a message to fans via Instagram that it was nothing but a case of "severe bronchitis."

Hallyday boarded a flight early Friday from the French island to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was then expected to travel to Los Angeles, where he has a home. He walked slowly to the airplane, unaided except by an umbrella for the rain.

The singer was first hospitalized Sunday in Guadeloupe, then moved the next day to Martinique.

Warned Over H8 Campaign

Catholic Bishop

Washington state regulators have warned a Roman Catholic bishop that his diocese risks running afoul of state campaign finance laws if he follows through with a planned fund-raising effort opposing same-sex marriage on the November ballot.

State law prohibits organizations, including churches, from raising money from individuals to give to political campaigns, said Lori Anderson, a spokeswoman for the state's Public Disclosure Commission.

The commission was calling into question a recent letter from Bishop Joseph Tyson to Yakima-area pastors urging them to distribute donation envelopes to parishioners during the weekend of September 8-9.

The money would go to Preserve Marriage Washington, the campaign to defeat legalization of same-sex marriage on the state's November ballot.

Tyson's letter instructs parish priests not to open the envelopes once they are turned back in, but to place them into a pre-addressed security envelope to be mailed directly to Preserve Marriage, according to local media reports.

TV's "Starsky" To Fight Drug Charge

Paul Michael Glaser

The actor who played David Starsky in the 1970s police drama "Starsky & Hutch" is fighting a drug charge in Kentucky for what he says is medical marijuana from California.

The Daily News in Bowling Green reports an attorney entered a not guilty plea on Thursday on behalf of 69-year-old Paul Michael Glaser of Venice, Calif.

Bowling Green police charged Glaser with possession of marijuana and a pipe on May 10, hours after he read an excerpt of his young adult novel, "Chrystallia and the Source of Light," to students at a middle school.

According to a police citation, Glaser said he had medical marijuana prescribed to him in California.

He was arrested after an anonymous call to police that a man was smoking marijuana in a hotel.

Nun Sues Over "Sister Act"

Disney

Apparently, imitation isn't always the sincerest form of flattery. At least in the case of "Sister Act."

The Walt Disney Company and Touchstone Pictures are being sued for $1 billion - yes, with a "b" - by a nun who claims that her life story was stolen and used in the 1992 film "Sister Act."

In a suit filed in New York Supreme Court last week, Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely of the Franciscan Handmaids of Mary Convent in Harlem claims that "Sister Act" - and its 1993 sequel, as well as a stage musical adaptation - used "plaintiff's actual life experiences without her permission or authorization, thereby irreparably damaging her by depriving her of the windfall of financial gain reaped by defendants."

Blakely sued Disney, as well as producer Scott Rudin and Sony Pictures, late last year over the matter, but had that suit voluntarily dismissed in January.

Power Suits To Auction

Margaret Thatcher

Seven suits worn by Britain's first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher before she took up office will go on sale for up to 1,500 pounds each on Monday.

A bright turquoise ensemble she wore on the day she was elected leader of the Conservative Party in February 1975 and a striking yellow dress and jacket are included in the sale by Christie's in London.

Other outfits include a gold and silver cocktail ensemble and a dark greatcoat with distinctive red lapel stitching.

Only a limited number of her personal items have ever been sold and her suits could fetch more than their 1,500 pound price tag after an exhibition showing the auction items have already attracted much interest, the spokeswoman added.

In Memory

Shulamith Firestone

Writer Shulamith Firestone, who published her influential "The Dialectic of Sex" at age 25 and then retreated into isolation and mental illness, has died at age 67.

Firestone was found dead Tuesday in her Manhattan apartment, said her sister Laya Firestone Seghi. The death was from natural causes.

"The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution" was published in 1970 during the height of the women's liberation movement.

Firestone applied Marxist analysis to the status of women and argued that true liberation would come only when women were freed from childbearing. In Firestone's utopian future, babies would be gestated outside the womb and raised by both sexes.

The book joined works like Kate Millett's "Sexual Politics" and Germaine Greer's "The Female Eunuch" as a 1970s feminist standard and is still assigned in college courses.

But Firestone retreated from public life after the book was published and was hospitalized with schizophrenia in the 1980s.

More recently she became so reclusive that according to her landlord, Bob Perl, she had been dead for about a week when her body was discovered.

Firestone was beloved despite her struggles, Perl said. People often called his office to volunteer to pay the rent on her East Village apartment.

"Family, friends and strangers supported her because she so moved them with her work," Perl said.

Firestone was born to an Orthodox Jewish family in Ottawa, Ontario, and raised in St. Louis. She earned a degree in painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

She moved to New York in the 1960s and co-founded three feminist groups intended as radical alternatives to mainstream groups like the National Organization for Women.

Firestone's only book other than "The Dialectic of Sex" was "Airless Spaces," a fictionalized account of life in and out of psychiatric hospitals, published in 1998.

In addition to Seghi, survivors include her mother, two brothers and another sister.

Welcome!

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.
Make yourself home, take your shoes off...
Go ahead, scratch it if it itches.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican hypocrites?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?

In other words, submissions are welcome.
