'K-19, The Widowmaker'

From David L

The best action movie of the summer is here, 'K-19, The Widowmaker'."

Once again history provides a better script than Hollywood. Like the excellent "13 Days", of last year, "K19, the Widowmaker" unfolds a rich and true story with the ability to surprise us.

The story is set aboard the K-19, a Soviet nuclear submarine in 1961. The two main characters of the story are Harrison Ford as the captain and Liam Neeson as the executive officer. These two play off each other like William Dafoe and Tom Berrenger in "Platoon", the good officer and the bad officer.

The captain makes two fateful decisions before leaving drydock on the maiden voyage - to replace the experienced reactor officer, who was found to be drunk on duty and to replace the ship's doctor, who is killed in an auto accident, with the shipyard doctor.

I really like seeing Harrison Ford step outside the usual guy who saves the world role and play a first rate assh*le. The heart of the K-19 story is not playing chicken with U.S. Navy, but instead how the sailors must overcome adversity to save the ship.

The ships reactor malfunctions and a cooling pipe must be welded ad hoc onto the reactor to save the ship. The bravery and the cowardice of the Soviet sailors is revealed when they must nut-up to enter the reactor to weld it while seeing the preceeding team of poor bastards exit the reactor in near meltdown condition themselves.

This movie has a lot of good common elements with outstanding naval movies that have gone before it, "The Mutiny on the Bounty", "The Caine Mutiny", "Crimson Tide" and most notably "Das Boot".

It also has a timely moral that I would like to share with my liberal friends, that a government that sacrifices everthing for secrecy stifles life.

Go see it. Oh, like I told you, this movie will surprise you.

Thanks, David. Will try to see this weekend.

Re: Sheep Injections

'' ... Khashoggi, who has not visibly aged, credits the annual injections of sheep glands he has been getting for 30 years. ''

This begs the question, "Was the sheep the injector or the injectee?"

~~ Ray

Well, Ray.....kinda reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw the last time I visited kin in Yellow Pine, ID -- ''Idaho, Where Men Are Men & The Sheep Are Worried''.

Last week had a story about some vain man who had lamb injections, too. Jeez.

Way back when I had to submit 'term papers', I liked to go for the somewhat obscure, and that led me to Dr. Brinkley, the Goat Gland Man.

Dr. Brinkley not only grafted portions of goat glands on old 2-legged goats, but he also broadcast more than his fair share of fundy-radio as well as creating 'over the border radio' stations.

In one way, we have Dr. Brinkley to thank for Wolfman Jack (and then some).

The Goat Gland Doctor

Living in the LA-area, where Wilshire is a boulevard ('Dr.' Wilshire was also a snake-oil salesman like 'Dr.' Brinkley - only Wilshire sold belts that were supposed to charge one's body, electrically), let's not even get into the background of ''Mulholland'' (go rent ''Chinatown'').

Thanks for the flashbacks, Ray (and that's a good thing)!

{Sung to 'Going Up The Country' by Canned Heat}

{As sung by Noelle Bush}

I'm going up the pharmacy to pick-up my medication
I'm going up the pharmacy - I called-in a forged prescription
I'm going to a place where I got Xanax before

I'm going, I'm going - where no one knows my dad's the gov'nor
I'm going where the pharmacist don't ask questions
I'll be high on Xanax cruising in mom's car

But I can't leave the drive-through, I can't get away
Gawd, can'tleave the premises, cops are everywhere
What the ef, I'm busted, gotta call Dad for bail

Hey, I'm a Bush gal, I will get no jail time
You know how the game is played, Mr. Officer
Just exactly what I'm arrested for, I just can't say
I might even try it again at another Walgreen's

Re: Alan Lomax

I heard the news on NPR this evening, that Alan Lomax died at 87 in Florida this morning. They had a brief interview with Pete Seeger, reminding us how much we owe to the Lomaxes for preserving the works of Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, and many others.

It seemed appropriate to set up a home "altar" to him, with a copy of his book "Folk Songs of North America", and the vinyl of "The Weavers' Greatest Hits" behind it, to pay proper tribute to those who set in motion the folk revivals of the 1950s & 1960s.

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Had to stop by the reptile shop for fresh crickets for the lizards & tarantula today.

One of my old pals stopped by today. We were supposed to go to Ikea & then 'do' lunch. Seems she's now taking meds for depression, and while having driven here, she was unable to navigate through the house without holding onto the walls. Introduced her to the kittens & she forgot about going to Ikea. Had to feed her lunch, though.

The local grocery store has blueberries on special this week. Baked a couple of blueberry coffeecakes tonight, using my grandmother's old recipe. One for now, and one for the freezer.

When the kid was little, he fixated on becoming the captain of a ship. Back then, there was a great store over in San Pedro that catered to all that was sea-worthy. Bought the kid a captain's hat, and he was stoked. Time passes, and he re-found his captain's hat this past week. He had to wear it to CostCo yesterday, and today he had to wear it on the errands. Back when he was really little he had to have a 'tail'. Ended up sewing velcro-dots on the butts of his pants & made some tails (fabric, yarn & leather) to attach. Jeez, all his pants had to have velcro-butt dots.

Tonight, Saturday, CBS has a fresh episode of 'Big Brother 3' followed by reruns of 'The District' and 'The Agency'.

NBC starts the night with the movie 'Species', and then follows with the series debut of 'She Spys'. Winona Ryder hosts the rerun 'Saturday Night Live'.

ABC reruns the James Bond movie 'Diamonds Are Forever', which sounds like a DeBeers ad.

The WB has the movie 'Mermaids'.

Faux has 4 reruns of 'Cops'.

UPN has the movie 'Outbreak'.

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

Nears Deal to Host Emmys

Conan O'Brien

Late-night television host Conan O'Brien is close to a deal to serve as master of ceremonies for the 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards show on NBC this fall, a source close to the situation said on Friday.

O'Brien is expected to be formally announced as host of television's top honors next Tuesday, when the network opens its annual summer "press tour" in Pasadena showcasing its new lineup of programs for TV critics, the source said.

A spokeswoman for NBC, a unit of General Electric Co., said only that an announcement about an Emmy host would come early next week. O'Brien's personal publicist and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which presents the Emmys, referred queries to NBC.

NBC is set to broadcast the Emmys live on Sept. 22 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The HBO series "Six Feet Under," about a family of morticians, led the field of Emmy nominations announced on Thursday with 23 bids, including one for outstanding drama. NBC's "The West Wing" was second with 21 nominations, also garnering a mention for best drama.

Ends Pigeon Releases

Disney World

Florida's Disney World ended a 30-year tradition this week when it stopped releasing pigeons during its shows after learning the defenseless birds became sitting ducks for red-tailed hawks, the Sun-Sentinel reported Friday.

The pigeons were released to soar over the theme parks in shows such as Cinderella's Surprise Celebration or Beauty and the Beast. They were supposed to return to their roosts, but many were grabbed by the hungry hawks.

The newspaper said it was only recently that the hawks began snatching the birds, and that no visitors complained about witnessing the midair attacks in the Disney World parks near Orlando, Florida.

Disney is now trying to find homes for about 200 pigeons.

Remember ''Supermarionation''?

''Thunderbirds''

"Star Trek" star Jonathan Frakes is set to direct a live-action feature version of "Thunderbirds," the cult TV series that used puppets and models in a process dubbed "supermarionation".

The 1960s series revolved around a top-secret international rescue team comprised of retired astronaut Jeff Tracy and his five sons. Assisting the family was their London agent, Lady Penelope, her Cockney ex-convict driver, Parker, and the Tracys' houseguest, Brains.

The Universal Pictures project is aiming for an early 2003 start.

Frakes, best known for playing Commander William Riker on TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation," directed and co-starred in "Star Trek: Insurrection" and "Star Trek: First Contact." He most recently directed the Paramount children's adventure "Clockstoppers."

The American Cinematheque will pay tribute to "Thunderbirds" creator/producer/writer Gerry Anderson on August 24. Anderson will attend a screening of a "Thunderbirds" episode at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, and take part in a discussion afterwards.

Matt Groening Says...

Homer Simpson is Canadian

D'oh Canada! The secret's out! Homer Simpson is . . . a Canadian. But - ay caramba - Matt Groening, his creator, hopes we won't have a cow about it. Many Canucks know about Superman's half-Canadian heritage - he was co-created by Torontonian Joe Shuster - but little has been mentioned about the ancestry of Springfield's favourite son, even when The Simpsons set part of an episode last season in Toronto.

In Montreal for a performance of The Simpsons - In the Flesh stage show at the Just for Laughs comedy festival, Groening noted Thursday his dad was born in Canada and Homer is named for him so . . . .

"That would make Homer Simpson a Canadian," Groening said in an interview. "I hope Canadians won't hold it against the show now that they know.

"We were counting on Canadians feeling superior to the Simpsons as being doltish Americans but now the secret is out."

Groening shouldn't doubt that pride will swell Canadians up like Homer on a doughnut binge. The top-rated cartoon show, which is now in production for its 14th season, is seen in first-run episodes on Global and Fox and in syndication several times a day on most other networks available in Canada.

The Montreal stage shows, to be presented Friday and Saturday, feature the entire cast - except Julie Kavner as Marge, who couldn't attend - doing a reading of some favourite episodes.

Denied More Time with Children

Paula Poundstone

A judge on Friday rejected comic Paula Poundstone's request to spend less time in therapy and more time with her adopted children during her probation on child-abuse charges.

An attorney for the 42-year-old stand-up star made the plea during a routine progress hearing.

Poundstone pleaded no contest to child endangerment charges in September, and was ordered to spend six months in an alcohol rehabilitation program and five years on probation. The charges stem from an incident in which she drove while drunk with four of her children in her car.

The terms of her probation allow Poundstone to have monitored visits with her three foster and two adopted children as long as she attends thrice-weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, submits to random drug testing and attends therapy and child-abuse counseling.

She is barred, however, from having the children live at her home.

Santa Monica Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins declined Poundstone's request to modify the conditions of her probation and ordered her to return to court on Sept. 27 for another progress report.

Paula Poundstone

Scroll down & compare Paula's transgressions with Robert Downey, Jr's....3 cocaine busts, one involving breaking & entering, versus 1 count of drunken driving for ice cream cones. I'm not condoning drinking & driving, especially with kids in the car, but, it seems to me that the LA DA comes down HARD on single women, but allows 'boys to be boys'. Maybe Paula should consider changing her last name to ''Bush''.

Minnesota Department of Transportation

Drainage Ponds Names

The Minnesota Department of Transportation was having trouble keeping track of its several hundred drainage ponds at highway interchanges.

So it named some of them Bart, Barney and Milhouse.

Yes, TV's "The Simpsons" has come to stormwater runoff management, courtesy of state hydrologist Patrick McLarnon. "It's just something fun," he said, and a better naming scheme than the numbers and letters that used to be employed.

The Simpsons ponds — there's also Apu, Clancy Wiggum, Maggie, Itchy, Lenny, Quimby, Scratchy and Seymour — are all part of the Interstate 494-Highway 61 interchange project in Newport in the metro area.

McLarnon also has named ponds after "Happy Days" characters Richie, Joanie, Chachi and The Fonz along Interstate 94 and for "Star Wars" aliens along Highway 12.

None of the names appear on plaques at the ponds, but that's how they're designated in state databases to track water quality and runoff flows.

What's next? "Maybe `South Park,'" McLarnon said.

Reveals Espionage Gadgets, Tactics

Spy Museum

The mayor wore a disguise, agents in black trenchcoats crept down the building's brick face, and with the cut of a ribbon the "Top Secret" banner tore away to unveil the International Spy Museum which opened its doors to the public on Friday.

Displayed inside were espionage tools like the KGB's single-shot lipstick pistol known as "the kiss of death," bugging devices that turned progressively smaller through time, and CIA briefcase recorders so bulky in the early Cold War years that it was hard to imagine how they went undetected.

Tributes to fictional spies also had space, including a replica of James Bond's silver Aston Martin DB5 from the 1964 movie "Goldfinger," loaded with machine guns, tire slashers, oil jets and bullet-proof shield to evade the enemy. The roughly 1,000 artifacts included tools used by foreign spy agencies, both friends and foes of the United States.

The museum includes interactive exhibits which try to give visitors a sense of spying that even veterans of the game found challenging.

Actress Barbara Feldon, the famed "Agent 99" of the popular "Get Smart" television show of the 1960s and 1970s attended the pre-opening gala reception on Thursday evening.

"I'm strangely famous for yelling 'look out Max' hundreds of times, and here I am with actual spies -- it's kind of fun that fantasy and reality are mixing," she said.

Undergoes Weight-Loss Procedure

Ann Wilson

Rock vocalist Ann Wilson is on her way to a healthier heart, losing 50 pounds since surgeons placed a "Lap-Band" device around her stomach to reduce her food intake, her doctor said on Thursday.

Wilson, 52, who with her guitar-playing sister, Nancy, was the spark behind the 1970s-'80s rock group Heart, underwent the surgery in January, according to Dr. Brian B. Quebbemann, who performed the "minimally invasive" procedure.

The band can be adjusted without further surgery to increase or decrease the restriction on food intake. The surgery is designed for individuals who are 100 pounds or more overweight, or for those who are 75 pounds overweight with serious medical conditions attributed to their obesity.

Quebbemann said one advantage of the Lap-Band over other weight-loss procedures, such as gastric bypass surgery, was that it avoids any cutting or stapling of the intestines or stomach. He also said there was no risk of malnutrition.

A spokesman for the doctor said Wilson's surgery was performed at a hospital in Orange County, California, south of Los Angeles, but Quebbemann said the procedure can be done on an outpatient basis for younger people.

October Space Flight?

Lance Bass

Russia wants 'N Sync's Lance Bass to fly on an October Soyuz mission to the International Space Station, but NASA said on Friday there are still questions about the pop star's education, work experience and plans for activities while in orbit.

Bass, 23, has not yet signed a contract for the mission but has been training in Russia for months. In May, he told reporters he had won a preliminary go-ahead from Russian doctors to make the voyage.

But a spokesman at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said international partners in the station have asked for a review of Bass's medical information, and more data on his educational background, work experience and level of fluency in Russian.

They also want to see a detailed summary of what he expects to do while at the orbiting station, and a plan to cut down on any possible disruption he might pose to the space station crew, the NASA spokesman said.

Under international rules set up for space tourists, the nomination of a "visiting crew member" like Bass should take place no later than six months before the flight, but the letter said Russia needs the money a tourist flight would bring in now.

Neither NASA nor RASA have ever officially announced the going rate for a trip to space, but the two previous paying space travelers -- U.S. millionaire Dennis Tito and South African Internet entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth -- reportedly paid some $20 million each.

Bass will "have a challenge" bringing his Russian language skills up to standard, the letter said, but added that both of the Soyuz professional crew members who would fly with Bass -- Sergei Zalyotin and Frank DeWinne -- speak excellent English.

Probation Ended, Drugs Charge Dismissed

Robert Downey Jr.

A judge on Friday dismissed drug charges against actor Robert Downey Jr. and ended his probation, leaving the actor free to resume a movie career derailed by a lengthy battle with addiction.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Randall White heard Downey had successfully completed a one-year drug rehabilitation program imposed by the court after the award-winning actor pleaded no contest to cocaine possession and being under the influence of drugs.

Downey, 37, was arrested twice for cocaine possession within months of his August 2000 release from a year-long prison stay on a prior drugs conviction.

The fallout from those incidents cut short a budding comeback for the actor, who won Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for his role in the TV series "Ally McBeal."

But a smiling Downey, wearing a blue pin-striped suit, told reporters on Friday that both he and Hollywood had changed.

"(Hollywood) is not like that anymore. It's a lot more strait-laced and they're not interested in people who are not going to show up and be healthy," he said.

Downey, who has been allowed to work with permission and under supervision, has just completed filming "The Singing Detective" -- his first big screen role since "Wonder Boys" which was released in early 2000.

Alan Lomax

Alan Lomax, a folk and blues archivist whose early recordings of such music legends as Muddy Waters and Leadbelly formed a vitally important piece of American history, died on Friday in Florida, his record label said.

Lomax was 87. A publicist for Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Rounder Records, which released a 150-CD collection of folk music and narrative drawn from Lomax's recordings, said his cause of death was not immediately available.

Along with his father, John, Lomax traversed the American South during the 1930s, collecting songs for the Library of Congress. Many were recorded in state penitentiaries and prison farms. One such recording, "Po Lazarus," by James Carter and the Prisoners, appeared on the hugely successful Grammy-winning soundtrack to "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

Among the other prisoners they recorded was Leadbelly (born Huddie Ledbetter), a convicted murderer who was doing time for assault by the time they came across him at the Angola prison farm in Louisiana in 1933. They helped get him released and he became their chauffeur.

Other artists recorded for posterity included Woody Guthrie, Jelly Roll Morton, Son House, Bukka White, Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Boy Williamson and Memphis Slim.

After John Lomax retired in early 1940, Alan took over as curator of the archive. Following a stint in the army during World War II, he worked for Decca Records and continued to collect songs. He also had his own radio shows.

Since many blues players' lives were shrouded in mystery, Lomax often relied on luck while on his travels. In 1940, while driving through Atlanta with his wife, he saw a guitarist at a food stand. It turned out to be Blind Willie McTell, best known for his 1928 recording of "Statesboro Blues." The next day, Lomax recorded McTell in a hotel room as he played and talked about his life.

In 1941, Lomax recorded a 26-year-old guitarist named McKinley Morganfield, a Mississippi plantation worker. Those recordings have since been released as "The Complete Plantation Recordings" under the name that Morganfield would later become known to millions of blues and rock fans by -- Muddy Waters.

The Muddy Waters session was actually a consolation prize of sorts. Lomax's main objective on that trip was to find Robert Johnson, the near-mythical "King of the Delta Blues." Unfortunately, he was too late: Johnson had been fatally poisoned three years earlier.

During the 1950s, Lomax conducted extensive research into folk music from Britain, Italy and Spain, releasing his findings on album. He also continued his field trips across the United States. He retired in 1996.

Having spent decades recording traditional music, Lomax was wary of modern sounds. While the Paul Butterfield Blues Band was setting up its equipment at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, Lomax made some unkind comments about their electric blues to the crowd and later traded blows backstage with their manager, Albert Grossman.

Among Lomax's survivors are daughter, Anna Lomax Chairetakis, a grandson, Odysseus Desmond Chairetakis and sister Bess Lomax Hawes. His funeral will take place July 23 at the Vinson Funeral Home in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

Seymour Solomon

Seymour Solomon, co-founder of Vanguard Records, a label that dominated American folk music with stars such as Joan Baez, died Thursday. He was 80.

Solomon founded Vanguard in 1950 with his brother, Maynard. The label recorded famed artists like Odetta, Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie. It also signed such jazz and blues legends as Mississippi John Hurt and Buddy Guy and maintained a strong classical list.

From its earliest days, the Solomons took risks, signing performers like the Weavers and Paul Robeson who had been blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Starting in 1959, Vanguard recorded the Newport Folk Festival, and later recorded the Newport Jazz festival as well.

Solomon and his brother sold Vanguard in 1985 to the Welk Record Group, and three years later opened Omega Classics. He later bought back Vanguard's old classical catalog and reissued it on compact disc.

Solomon had studied violin at the Juilliard School and played in the Air Corps Orchestra during World War II. After the war, he studied musicology and worked as a critic and commentator for music magazines and radio stations.
