Purple Gene Revies

'March of the Penguins'

Purple Gene's review of the Documentary movie "March of the Penguins" (2005) Directed by Luc Basquet:

"AVIAN ORGY ON ICE"

"SEX PARTY AT THE SOUTH POLE"

"March of the Penguins" was filmed on location in the coldest place on Earth!! Somewhere near the South Pole! This is the story of the primordial instinct to survive by waddling over a million arduous Penguin steps (70 miles at about 4" per step) or even on their bellies to get to a thick iced little valley….to MATE…..en MASSE!

I suppose males of any species will walk a long way to get layed…but the awesome, unreal visuals of a couple thousand Emperor Penguins in a single file schlogging to their destination……for GROUP SEX!!!!! Not really!!! When these determined nun-like looking tele-tubbies finally get to their love valley, they actually PAIR UP…..There's a little foreplay…a little beak bumping….then some penguin poking and pretty soon the moms pop an egg out and hold it off the ice with their feet…and keep it warm in a "Bun Oven" like flap way down there……well the moms lose about a third of their body weight carry and dropping the eggs and need to walk back 70 miles to EAT….so after the EGG TOSS (The females patiently pass the precious eggs to the males to keep warm) and it's time for the "First Wives Club" to go fishing…and they leave the guys for 3 months to stand around in a crowd like a bunch of big bobbling incubators…while the temperature drops to 180 degrees below zero and the winds blow up to 100 miles per 100! They remain bunched together to survive the incredible chilling environment!

Just when the exhausted horde is about to give up…guess what? The eggs all start to open and these fuzzy little, floppy little penguin infants are born to the Dads! There is a critical few days of life where this whole arrangement can go "SOUTH" because the dads have no food (except a small ort in their craw for the newborns)…but sure enough….just in time, the fattened up mommies come back from fishing to feed the babes….but how does each mom find it's mate and new offspring????? I don't know…the moms circle the crowd and there's peeping and poking and pretty soon these threesomes are together…but not for long because the dads are nearly starving from 3 month without any food…so they all kiss the moms and chicks goodbye and head back to the open sea…70 miles away.

Well after the Chicks get big enough, all the moms leave them and head back to ocean. The chicks will waddle back in their own good time and finally dive into the briny. For three months these incredible creatures spend Summer Vacation frolicking and feeding and fattening up for next "AVIAN ORGY ON ICE"! The juvenile penguins wait five years before they get to go to the LOVE Valley.

Watching this movie reminded me a little bit of winged migration. Instead of a French voice Narrating, we had the elegant tones of Morgan Freeman guiding us through this truly amazing and arduous journey…..This one is not rated by Purple Gene…just go see it!

TODAY - MTV & VH1

Live 8

After a drubbing from critics, MTV and VH1 will rerun 10 hours of coverage of the Live 8 concert events without commercials on Saturday.

VH1 will carry the first five hours from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., while MTV will carry the second leg from 3-8 p.m.

MTV was roundly assailed by pundits and critics for the frequent commercial breaks and other interruptions during its live coverage of the July 2 concerts.

Set Up By CGOP

John Davison

I've never walked off the set of a TV show in disgust before, but this week I did. There's a first time for everything, I guess. I was in the studio for a live-to-tape session of the Donny Deutsch show on CNBC, "The Big Idea" on Tuesday morning this week. After enduring it for about 10 or 15 minutes it was clear that the whole situation had been a set-up from outset.

The show's director originally contacted me on Monday this week. I was told that Deutsch would be talking about videogames, and they wanted someone from the gaming media to talk about a bunch of things. The subjects listed to me ran the gamut from "the future of videogames" to "online clans and community." I was told that the violence thing might come up, in light of the recent 25-to-Life exposure, to which my response was a dismissive "that's been done to death, it's boring." The director simply asked me if I would "just say that on air."

When I arrived at the studio, and after being caked in layers of makeup, I sat down in front of the camera and soon learned that the entire show was about violence. It kicked off with Donny holding up a copy of Computer Games magazine declaring that there wasn't a single game in there that wasn't violent, and they then immediately cut to scenes of CJ stamping on a girl until she bled over the pavement in San Andreas. I was introduced as pretty much the bad guy who thinks this doesn't have an effect on kids, and...well...things just deteriorated from there. I tried to discuss the ratings system, I tried to talk about how the majority of games are sold at Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy, and how they all take the ratings system very seriously...but this isn't what the show was supposed to be about. Donny had an agenda. "All games are violent" was his proclamation, and nothing was going to sway him. We weren't here to test a hypothesis. While this was happening, the director kept nagging me through the earpiece to "jump in and talk about what you're here to talk about." I was pissed. "That's not what the show appears to be about, darling."

Internet Legend

Jorn Barger

A bum in a Google cap. Now there's a sign of the times, I think as he shambles toward me. He looks pretty much like any other tattered street person in San Francisco - long, windblown dirty-blond hair with a beard to match. Unbuttoned shirttails flapping in the afternoon breeze.

But he's walking with someone I recognize - Andrew, a dapper writer I've known for years. We stop on the sidewalk, and Andrew introduces me to the guy in the Google cap: "This is Jorn Barger," he begins. "Another homeless blogger," his companion finishes.

Jorn Barger. It takes me a moment to recognize the name. Barger is an online legend I've been following for a decade. He was the unstoppable Usenet poster who could carry on simultaneous debates about Ibsen, Chomsky, artificial intelligence, and Kate Bush. He was the keeper of the James Joyce FAQ. Barger's prolific posting made him famous, if not popular, in the protoblogosphere.

Barger crossed over from Usenet to the Web in 1997 and set up his own site, which he dubbed the Robot Wisdom Weblog. He began logging his online discoveries as he stumbled on them - hence "weblog." I barely understood what he was talking about, and still I read him giddily. Barger gave a name to the fledgling phenomenon and set the tone for a million blogs to come. Robot Wisdom bounced unapologetically from high culture to low, from silly to serious, from politics to porn.

For the rest, Jorn Barger

U.S. Losing Lead

Science

More than half a century of U.S. dominance in science and engineering may be slipping as America's share of graduates in these fields falls relative to Europe and developing nations such as China and India, a study released on Friday says.

The United States has had a substantial lead in science and technology since World War II. With just 5 percent of the world's population, it employs almost a third of science and engineering researchers, accounts for 40 percent of research and development spending and publishes 35 percent of science and engineering research papers.

Numbers of science and engineering graduates from European and Asian universities are soaring while new degrees in the United States have stagnated -- cutting its overall share.

The picture among doctorates -- key to advanced scientific research -- was more striking. In 2001, universities in the European Union granted 40 percent more science and engineering doctorates than the United States, with that figure expected to reach nearly 100 percent by about 2010, the study showed.

Court Reinstates Convictions

Haing Ngor

A federal appeals court on Thursday reinstated the murder convictions of three California gang members blamed for the shooting death of Oscar-winning actor Dr. Haing Ngor, rejecting a lower court's finding of prosecutorial misconduct.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said prosecutors did not engage in misconduct by invoking Ngor's ordeal in 1970s Cambodia or by "falsely" telling jurors he was killed in a struggle over the only picture he had of his late wife.

Ngor, who survived the mass killings of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s but lost his wife when she died during childbirth, won an Academy Award for his performance in the 1984 film "The Killing Fields" about the Khmer Rouge atrocities.

Jump to Their Deaths

450 Sheep

First one sheep jumped to its death. Then stunned Turkish shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they had breakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each leaping off the same cliff, Turkish media reported.

In the end, 450 dead animals lay on top of one another in a billowy white pile, the Aksam newspaper said. Those who jumped later were saved as the pile got higher and the fall more cushioned, Aksam reported.

The estimated loss to families in the town of Gevas, located in Van province in eastern Turkey, tops $100,000, a significant amount of money in a country where average GDP per head is around $2,700.

In Memory

Tom Talbert

Tom Talbert, a self-taught pianist who arranged music for jazz greats such as Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill, has died. He was 80.

Talbert became interested in arranging at age 15 after hearing big bands on the radio. During World War II, he joined the Army and became an arranger for a military band at Ft. Ord that performed for war-bond drives throughout California.

After the war, the native of Crystal Bay, Minn., came to Los Angeles and led his own 14-piece orchestra from 1946-49 and toured with singer Anita O'Day. In 1950, Talbert moved to New York and arranged music for many jazz greats, including Rich, Kenton and Thornhill.

Talbert released two albums in the mid-1950s, "Bix Duke Fats," a modern jazz treatment of compositions by Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington and Fats Waller, and "Wednesday's Child" with singer Patty McGovern.

In 1975, he returned to Los Angeles and wrote the soundtracks for such television shows as NBC's "Serpico" and "Emergency." He led a septet and another big band, revived his recording career and performed through the 1990s.

He also established a scholarship for young musicians studying at California State University, Long Beach.

Talbert is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Beverly Hills; four stepchildren; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
