Another Side of the News

Schwartzeneggger's new budget is out, and coming under attack from Legislative Analyst Elizabeth G. Hill. We can ALMOST balance the budget with borrowing for the next two years, but we'll have $6.5 to $8 BILLION shorfalls into the future after that.

Ahhnuld says he doesn't care about next year, only this year. According to Republican Florida Senate President Tom Lee, that's exactly what Donna Arduin did for Jeb before she took over here. All smoke and mirrors and gimmicks.

We'll be joined by Santa Barbara Mayor Marty Blum to discuss the budget and it's effect on our everyday lives.

Tune in to "Another Side of the News" with Paul Berenson, Saturdays 9am-10am PST on KCSB-FM 91.9 or listen on our webcast. Your local phone calls are welcome at:

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Sunnier, but still breezy.

Stopped by CostCo to pick up some photos, but they weren't ready.

The bathroom scale stopped working the other day, so decided to replace it. All I wanted was a simple scale - no batteries, no digital read-outs, no artsy-fartsy.

Ended up with one that has a battery, and a digital read-out, and is so artsy-fartsy it even provides ounces.

Every time the kid went to the bathroom tonight he weighed himself - both before & after sitting on the throne - he wanted to know how much 'it' weighed.

Trade Quips at U. of Kansas

Bill & Bob

Bill Clinton and Bob Dole couldn't resist tossing some one-liners when the former political rivals shared a stage Friday at the University of Kansas. Dole, the Republican former senator from Kansas, introduced Clinton, the Democratic former president. Dole joked repeatedly about how Clinton had managed to one-up him, most notably in the 1996 presidential race in which Clinton won a second term.

Clinton, giving the inaugural lecture in a series that bears Dole's name, playfully grumbled that he hasn't been allowed to be funny since he was elected president in 1992.

At the beginning of his speech, Clinton thanked Dole for "arranging for 90 percent of my total vote in Kansas to come here." A Democratic presidential candidate hasn't won Kansas since 1964.

For his part, Dole noted the University of Kansas' reputation for liberal politics, calling it "where I get more compliments and fewer votes than anywhere in Kansas."

Limited-Edition Guitars

John Lennon

When Epiphone created the limited-edition John Lennon "1965" and "Revolution" Casino guitars in 1999, the manufacturer announced that 1,965 of the instruments would be built.

What Epiphone, a division of Gibson Musical Instruments, didn't reveal was that a small quantity of low-serial-number pairs would remain at its Nashville factory.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' arrival in the United States, Epiphone plans to make available approximately 15 of each model.

The John Lennon Epiphone Casinos carry a $2,995 list price. While distribution of the low-serial-number guitars has not been determined, their limited production and significance to collectors will likely push prices higher.

A portion of proceeds from the sale of John Lennon Casinos is donated to the BMI Foundation for the John Lennon Scholarship Fund, which supports music education. Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, and BMI president emeritus Thea Zavin established the fund in 1997.

'Smile' Finally Set for Release

Brian Wilson

Nearly 40 years after its original planned release, Brian Wilson's "Smile" finally will come out.

Nonesuch Records will release the project -- a collaboration between Wilson and lyricist Van Dyke Parks -- Sept. 28.

Although some of the songs ultimately appeared on 1967's "Smiley Smile," the original record was shelved because of infighting by the Beach Boys over the material.

Another Lying Liar

Martha Stewart

Federal authorities Friday charged a government witness from the Martha Stewart trial with lying on the witness stand, but said the false testimony did not make her conviction invalid.

Prosecutors said they had discovered false statements made on the stand by Larry F. Stewart, a national ink expert who works at the Secret Service.

The two perjury counts against Larry Stewart, 46, of Bethesda, Maryland, carry up to 10 years in prison. He surrendered to federal agents earlier in the day and was expected to appear in court later Friday. He is no relation to Martha Stewart.

The government said it had uncovered eight separate false statements made by Larry Stewart about two subjects.

Conquer World's Longest River

Rafters

A group of six rafters pulled their boat out of the world's longest river Friday, exhausted but ecstatic after completing the first full descent of the White Nile in an epic four-and-a-half month journey.

The explorers arrived in Rosetta on Egypt's Mediterranean coast having boated through the war-torn areas of northern Uganda and southern Sudan as well as challenging Egypt's strict security regulations and bureaucracy.

The group -- which also included two South Africans, two Englishmen and a Frenchwoman -- filmed the almost 4,375-mile trip for television documentaries hoping to promote awareness of Africa and its regional conflicts.

The two sources of the river, the White Nile and Blue Nile, merge in the Sudanese capital Khartoum. Last month, two American rafters were the first people to raft the full length of the Blue Nile, ll length of the Blue Nile, more than 3,125 miles.

Disappointed 'Hack' Axed

David Morse

David Morse says he's disappointed that CBS axed "Hack" after a two-year run.

Morse, who starred in the drama as crime-fighting Philadelphia cab driver Mike Olshansky, said he was proud of the show, which was shot entirely in and around the city.

The series averaged 8.3 million viewers this season and regularly won its time slot. But poor showings in the important 18-to-49-year-old demographic ended the drama's run.

"Hack" will be replaced on Saturday nights by a new season of the reality competition "The Amazing Race."

Stands by Iraq Abuse Reports

Reuters

Despite official military statements denying any wrongdoing -- and an announcement today that the case is "closed" -- Reuters is standing by allegations that three of its employees were abused by U.S. soldiers while confined near Falluja in January.

A chronology produced by Reuters detailing events surrounding the alleged abuse of three of its staffers in Iraq, obtained by E&P today, appears to support the agency's contention that it has repeatedly pressed the military for a full and objective probe of this incident from the beginning, with sometimes disquieting results.

The detailed chronology reveals that the agency's Baghdad bureau chief, Andrew Marshall, received an e-mail from the military on Jan. 29 containing an executive summary of the U.S. investigation and its final results, which claimed no abuse of the staffers -- while the investigation, according to the Pentagon, was still underway. And none of the three Reuters detainees had been interviewed by the military.

The military said the summary had been sent in error, but when the final report was sent to Reuters nearly a month later, the executive summary had not changed.

On Wednesday, General Ricardo Sanchez reiterated his belief that the investigation of this case was "thorough" and he stood by the military's conduct in the matter. (The official military report on the incident was posted today at Raleigh's newsobserver.com.)
