In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Was outnumbered and ended up watching a whole lot more of 'Lost In Space' than I ever wanted. It was so bad it was past cheese...it was a pasteurized, processed cheese-food (like Velveeta) kind of movie.

Caught John Stossel bloviating at the end of '20/20', not that his kids will ever end up in therapy...

It was hot here today. Nearly 90. Shouldn't be that warm this time of year. Some of the more delusional among us call it 'earthquake weather'. Sure hope they're just delusional. ; )

Tonight, Saturday, CBS once again provides nothing but reruns...'Touched By An Angle', and then back-to-back reruns of 'The District'.

ABC has the 5th James Bond movie, 'You Only Live Twice'. The newly pregnant Brandy hosts, and bookends musical inserts. I'd look up the TRT, but, it's late, and I'm running later.

The WB regurgitates 'Ghost'.

Faux alternates episodes of 'Cops'...fresh, rerun, fresh, rerun.

UPN has 'The Naked Gun'.

AMC is still beating 'Predator' to death, but also offers 'Conrack', with Hume Cronyn & Jon Voight living an episode of Pat Conroy's life. 'It Came From Outer Space' is sandwiched in between. They seem to show a movie mentioned in 'Rocky Horror Picture Show''s opening theme on Saturdays.

TCM celebrates 'That's Entertainment', with parts I, II, and III, and a retrospective, 'That's Dancing'. Busby Berkley lives!

Locally, in the LA-area, KCET, PBS, channel 28, has 'Carmen Jones', where Dorothy Dandridge is at her finest!

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

Paul McCartney's Manuscript Up For Sale

''Hey, Jude''

Paul McCartney's incomplete manuscript of 'Hey Jude'

Paul McCartney's manuscript of the Beatles' hit song "Hey Jude" goes up for auction in London in April when it is expected to fetch $114,000.

The incomplete manuscript for the song, the Fab Four's best selling single according to McCartney's spokesman Geoff Baker, was found by a Beatles fan on a market stall in 1971, just three years after it was recorded.

But, as with the only previous sample of the handwritten lyrics to come to auction, the last lines are missing.

McCartney said he began to compose the song to console the infant Julian Lennon over the breakup of his father John's marriage to Cynthia Lennon as Yoko Ono came on the scene.

"I started singing 'Hey Jools, don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better...'. It was optimistic, a hopeful message for Julian. Come on man, your parents got divorced. I know you're not happy, but you'll be OK," he wrote.

John Lennon, who said he believed the song was a subconscious message from Paul encouraging him to continue with Ono, described it as one of McCartney's masterpieces.

It was more than twice the length of normal singles at over seven minutes and included a 36-piece orchestra.

Julian Lennon, who said he only found out nearly 20 years later that the song was about him, said he still gets goosepimples whenever he hears it.

"It's very strange to think that someone has written a song about you. It still touches me," he said on the catalog notes.

Big Dog Watch Continues

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton got a pleasant surprise while dining at The Ivy in L.A. Wednesday night. Clinton was with comic Chris Tucker and pop clarinetist Kenny G when Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue covergirl Yamila Diaz-Rahi walked in. The bathing beauty's handlers were given to understand an introduction was in order. So Yamila was duly brought over to meet the ex-prez. He complimented her on her photos and rushed off to catch a plane to Sydney, Australia.

'Price Negotiable'

'Garfield's Jet'

What exactly is "an aircraft fit for a fat cat?"

If you're Jim Davis, jet-setting creator of the feline-themed comic strip "Garfield," it's the sleek private jet you're putting up for sale.

An advertisement in Indiana Business Magazine's February issue describes the twin-engine Dassault Falcon 20F-5 as "an aircraft fit for a fat cat."

Garfield, the strip's lasagna-loving star, is pictured in the ad posing next to the plane, which bears a giant burgundy paw print on its tail.

When Davis bought the 10-passenger plane in 1987, he frequently shuttled from Delaware County Airport in Muncie to New York to do syndicate work. He also flew to Los Angeles to guide the "Garfield and Friends" television show, said Kim Campbell, a spokeswoman for Paws Inc., the Albany-based firm that handles Davis' business matters.

The initial offering price of $7.6 million is negotiable, said Will Grant, former chief pilot for Paws.

Hot Pieces Of What?!

Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen

Teen twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen almost got more than they bargained for in their straight-to-video flick "Holiday in the Sun." Screenwriter Brent Goldberg describes the wholesome Olsens as "hot pieces of a- -" in the March issue of Total Movie & Entertainment magazine, and implies that if he had his way, the film wouldn't have been so clean. "You should have seen the first draft," Goldberg says. "What we had going on with Mary-Kate, you don't want to know. Let's just say it didn't pass." Goldberg's raunchy writing credits include "Saving Ryan's Privates," a spoof about a World War II soldier who loses his sex organs in battle. He also penned the forthcoming National Lampoon film "Van Wilder: Party Liaison," starring Tara Reid. He might have been an odd choice for a script about the Bahamas vacation of two virginal 16-year-olds, but the producers were desperate because a writers' strike was supposed to start. They "were like, 'Can you guys write an Olsen twins script in two weeks?' We're like, 'How bleeping hard can it be?' "

'Queen of the Damned' Soundtrack

Jonathan Davis of Korn

The singers who perform on the "Queen of the Damned" soundtrack agree they normally wouldn't sing someone else's songs. The difference is that Jonathan Davis of Korn wrote the songs they sing.

Marilyn Manson said it allowed him to focus.

Jay Gordon of Orgy said Davis managed to capture the mood of the vampire Lestat.

Linkin Park's Chester Bennington said Davis took the care to put Lestat's words into the songs, rather than his own.

Wedding Registry List

Liza & David

Liza Minnelli and hubby-to-be David Gest have a staggering $300,000 wedding-wish list of gifts, with everything from a $20 napkin to a $5,330 crystal vase.

Her registry of 811 items centers around a dining set for 16 guests - with $235 pepper pots and $250 napkin rings for each.

Like many a deep-pocketed couple, Minnelli and Gest registered at Tiffany, Lalique and Bergdorf Goodman. The bride-to-be spent hours seeking out the most exquisite creations.

Minnelli wants a legendary Lalique Tanega vase priced at $5,330, two $1,150 candlesticks, four $475 punch ladles and 12 silver platters, each costing $2,900.

The famous couple also want four tureen serving dishes - but guests should be prepared to fork over a whopping $4,000 apiece. Even a menu holder to read what's for dinner will cost $395.

Butter spreaders - 16 of them are asked for - will cost $65 each.

The cheapest item is the $20 napkin - although it'll set you back $2,000 if you purchase all 100 that Minnelli and Gest want. Not interested in napkins? Then try picking up the $2,275 champagne cooler, with stand, that's on their list.

Involved Parents

Sheryl & Alice Cooper

Shock-rocker Alice Cooper and his wife, Sheryl, are putting on a patriotic show at a Phoenix elementary school this week.

The Coopers have been writing and directing the annual Hopi Elementary Variety Show every year since having to sit through what seemed like an endless recital for their daughter at the school 14 years ago.

"It was dry as it could be," Sheryl Cooper said.

This year's show, Hopi Doodle Dandy, mixes the mystery of a missing Declaration of Independence with songs, dances and skits.

The show was expected to sell out Thursday and Friday, packing more than 3,000 people into an auditorium for two shows at Arcadia High School.

Alice Cooper will make his annual appearance in the show, as will Sheryl. She'll play a svelte redhead who dons a 400-pound fat suit to become the character Large Marge.

'Rosie O'Donnell Show'

Flasher?

A woman in the audience of Thursday's "Rosie O'Donnell Show" flashed her breasts on live TV.

The young woman, who was not identified, stood up and opened her shirt just as cameras swept the audience before going into a commercial break.

O'Donnell had been interviewing "Law & Order" star Mariska Hargitay at the time.

"We've been on six years and it's never happened, but apparently a crazy woman in the audience flashed her boobs during the last audience shot," O'Donnell told viewers when the show came back on the air.

An edited version of "Rosie" was aired in markets where the show doesn't broadcast live.

New Ads For Kmart

Spike Lee

Kmart Corp. said Friday that it will launch a series of television commercials directed by filmmaker Spike Lee as part of an advertising campaign to differentiate the bankrupt discount chain from rivals like Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

The first commercial will air Sunday during the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics.

Officials at Kmart would not reveal the cost of the campaign, but said its price tag was similar to that of the company's ballyhooed "BlueLight Always" marketing campaign launched in April 2001. Industry experts pegged the cost of the BlueLight campaign at $40 million.

Spike Lee, who has directed such hard-hitting films as "Malcolm X" and "Jungle Fever," was selected to direct the television commercials because he is a "master of capturing what is real," Feuling said.

The television ads will run during popular television programs such as NBC's Friends and CBS's Survivor 4. Print advertising will appear in magazine's like Oprah Winfrey's "O" and "People," Kmart said.

Priming The ''Two Towers'' Pump

Peter Jackson

With the first installment of his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy a prime contender for Oscar honors, director Peter Jackson says he has reached deep into his bag of movie wizardry to deliver fresh characters and plot twists to part two due in theaters next December.

"The second feels very different from the first film, which I think is a positive thing. If audiences go to 'Two Towers' (the sequel) expecting more of the same, they are not going to get more of the same," Jackson told Reuters in an interview on Thursday.

The director will use more tricks in "Towers," including a starring role for a computer generated outcast Orc named Gollum, who with Frodo and his best friend Sam forms a sort of unholy alliance in the quest to destroy the ring.

See, Gollum wants the ring for himself.

"He's a really twisted, sick little guy," Jackson said.

Using British actor Andy Serkis dressed up in a "motion capture suit," Jackson and his animators can digitize all of Serkis' real movements and transform them into Gollum's, so the computerized creep can "act" with the real characters.

Jackson said he's only about halfway into editing the second movie. The first was about the "fellowship" of elves, dwarves and men who protected Frodo on his journey, but that band of guardsman was broken.

Look Who Got Braces

Tom Cruise

Improving on Tom Cruise's smile may seem like "Mission: Impossible," but the Hollywood star wants a bit more perfection in his famous grin.

Cruise, who turns 40 in July, started wearing braces during the past week in a bid to improve his bite, his spokeswoman, Pat Kingsley, said on Friday.

"Yes, Tom Cruise has braces -- I don't know what else to say," Kingsley said, adding that he has had them for about a week and will likely have them on for a "year or so."

The "Mission: Impossible" star decided to perfect his pearly whites after taking one of his kids to the orthodontist and the doctor noticed his bite was out of alignment," Kingsley said.

Cruise reportedly is wearing see-through braces, but Kingsley said a single wire from the apparatus was plainly visible across his upper teeth.

Dr. Laurence Rifkin, a Beverly Hills specialist in aesthetic dentistry who counts many celebrities among his patients, said the actor is likely aiming to correct an asymmetry in the "mid-line" between his upper and lower teeth.

Queen of the Brits?

Kylie Minogue

Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue was crowned Queen of the Brits on Wednesday night -- and she even had Oscar winner Russell Crowe to officiate at her musical coronation.

Sting felt as if he was getting a gold watch -- but the 50-year-old multi-millionaire still ripped off his shirt to belt out his greatest hits.

Minogue, dressed in a stunning mini-dress and silver underwear, was close to tears after accepting the first of two awards from "Gladiator" star Crowe.

Sting had confessed that getting a Lifetime Achievement Award after 25 years in the music business "does feel a little bit like a gold watch."

But before launching into "Roxanne" and "Every Breath You Take," the former Police frontman was clearly moved.

Conspicuous consumption and inflated egos make for a combustible combination at awards ceremonies and the 2002 Brits were no exception.

''Party Monster''

Macaulay Culkin

In his first film in eight years, Macaulay Culkin will star in "Party Monster," a darkly comic recounting of the sick, sad and true story of 1990s party promoter and convicted murderer Michael Alig.

Budgeted under $5 million, the Killer Films project also will star Seth Green ("Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me"), and will begin production in Gotham in mid-April.

Alig, a "club kid" and party promoter, rose to prominence in the early 1990s. At his peak, he had his own record label and magazine. He also was doing a lot of drugs and, as his addictions got worse, his party themes became darker and more twisted. He murdered his drug dealer by injecting him with Drano and threw him in the East River. The power he wielded on the club scene made him feel untouchable, so he didn't hesitate to boast of the murder. The press thought it was a publicity stunt until the body washed ashore.

Documentary veterans Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato will make their feature writing/directing debuts on the project. Their credits include "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," as well as an Alig documentary, also called "Party Monster."

Culkin's last feature role was in the 1994 "Richie Rich," but he received good reviews late last year for his performance in the play "Madame Melville," which was produced in both London and New York. Now 21, he is best known for his role in the first two "Home Alone" movies.

Hometown Girl

Liza Minnelli

She may live in Manhattan and belt out "New York, New York" in clarion style, but Liza Minnelli is basically a hometown girl.

Minnelli, who grew up on the movie sets of her parents, Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, returned to Hollywood on Thursday night for a star-filled dinner at the Mondrian Hotel, saluting her engagement to concert producer David Gest.

Some of the stars who attended were Eva Marie Saint, Rhonda Fleming, Barbara Rush, Robert Goulet, and comics Red Buttons and Rodney Dangerfield. Elizabeth Taylor, co-maid of honor with Maria Berenson in the March 16 wedding, and Michael Jackson, who will give away the bride with brother Tito, were no shows.

Minnelli, who turns 56 on March 12, followed in the footsteps of her mother, who would get up and sing at Hollywood parties. Accompanied by Michael Feinstein, Minnelli sang "I Love a Piano" and of course "New York, New York," starting it somberly in recognition of September 11, then building up to a rouser, dueting with her husband-to-be.

''Watching Ellie''

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

"Seinfeld" alumna Julia Louis-Dreyfus is hoping the third time's the charm when her new real-time comedy series, "Watching Ellie," premieres Tuesday on NBC.

The show, in which Louis-Dreyfus plays a Los Angeles lounge singer, will mark the third attempt by a former "Seinfeld" co-star to parlay stardom from the "show about nothing" into a successful new series.

"There's pressure regardless of (the failures of the Michael Richards and Jason Alexander series) to do a good show," Dreyfus said on Friday during a conference call to discuss "Ellie."

Of the three post-"Seinfeld" shows, "Ellie" is easily the most daring, employing a "real time" format similar to the one used in the popular Fox series "24."

Unlike "24," however, the half-hour slices from "Ellie" are contiguous within individual episodes but not from week to week.

"As an actress, it appeals to me because I love playing those in-between moments, those behavioral moments that one might not see," Louis-Dreyfus said. "It has a fly-on-the-wall-ish thing going for it."

"This show is exactly what I wanted to do," she said. "I have made very little concession here creatively, in fact, none. This is exactly the show I wanted to do. ... For that I will forever be grateful, regardless of how well the show does."

'Queen of the Damned'

Aaliyah

R&B singer Aaliyah, tragically killed in a plane crash last August, gets an eerie screen resurrection this week in a vampire movie that features the young actress in a poignant death scene.

Aaliyah, 22, had just completed filming "Queen of the Damned" when her plane crashed in the Bahamas, transforming the rising star into a cult figure in death and putting Hollywood in a spin over how, or even if, to promote the movie.

After months of speculation about whether the film would go straight to video, "Queen of the Damned" opens in theaters on Friday with a little help from Aaliyah's brother, and lot of buzz from fans.

In the movie, helped by a posthumous remix of some lines by her brother Rashad, Aaliyah slinks around in bronze body paint, baring fangs, as the vile and vicious 6,000-year-old Egyptian vampire Queen Akasha, who is bent on ruling the Earth.

In her last scene, she is made up as a stone statue whose body, with the help of special effects, crumbles into dust.

Aaliyah made her screen debut in "Romeo Must Die" (2000) and her vocals have been featured in films such as "Anastasia" and "Dr. Dolittle".

Her self-titled album, released in July, surged back into the top of the pop sales charts after her death, and in January she posthumously won two American Music Awards.

In Memory

Stephen Longstreet

Screenwriter and author Stephen Longstreet, who penned more than 100 fiction and nonfiction books, has died. He was 94.

Longstreet died Wednesday of pneumonia and congestive heart failure at Century City Hospital, the Los Angeles Times reported.

An artist by training, Longstreet's best-known work was chronicling the colorful world of jazz during the 20th century. He switched to writing during the Depression-era to make a living.

He wrote detective novels in the mid-1930s under a variety of pen names before writing fiction under his own name, including "The Pedlocks" and "The Flesh Peddlers."

Longstreet was hired by Warner Bros. in the 1940s and wrote "The Jolson Story" and "Stallion Road," starring Ronald Reagan.

Longstreet kept busy, also writing radio scripts, serving as a film critic for the Saturday Review and getting his book reviews syndicated. He later wrote "The Helen Morgan Story," and as a television writer in the '50s and '60s he wrote for "Playhouse 90."

Many of his books embraced jazz, including his 100th novel, "Jazz From A to Z: A Graphic Dictionary," published in 1989.

Born in New York, he grew up in New Brunswick, N.J., where he was introduced to jazz by future legend Paul Robeson.

He traveled to Paris in the late 1920s where he met such artists as Picasso and Matisse. He also met and drew James Joyce and Gertrude Stein.

He is survived by his son, Harry: a daughter, Joan Tanney of Los Angeles; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In Memory

Chuck Jones

Chuck Jones, the Oscar-winning animator who helped bring Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Daffy Duck to life and personally created Wile E. Coyote and his fruitless hunt for the Road Runner, died Friday of congestive heart failure at age 89, his family said.

He ranked among Hollywood's greatest film animators and his achievements in the bop, bam and boom world of film cartoons often was compared to Walt Disney's.

His wife of 20 years, Marian, was at his side when he died at their home in the Southern California town of Corona del Mar, a statement from his family said.

Jones made more than 300 animated films, winning three Oscars as a director and was presented in 1996 with an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement.

During the 1930s and 1940s -- affectionately called the Golden Age of animation -- Jones helped bring to life many of Warner Bros. most famous characters in the so-called Looney Tunes series, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig.

The list of characters he created himself included Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Marvin Martian, Pepe le Pew, Michigan J. Frog and many others.

He also produced, directed and wrote the screenplays for "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas," a television classic, and the feature-length film "The Phantom Tollbooth."

Born Sept. 21, 1912, in Spokane, Washington, Jones grew up in Hollywood where he worked occasionally as a child extra in silent-film comedies. After attending art school, Jones landed his first job in animation working for a former Disney animator, Ubbe Iwerks.

In 1936, Jones became an animator for the Leon Schlesinger Studio, which later was sold to Warner Bros, and in 1938 directed his first film, "The Night Watchman." Heading his own unit, Jones remained at Warner Bros. Animation Department until it closed in 1962.

During that time, he and several other directors developed such beloved characters as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. He moved to MGM Studios, where he created new episodes from the "Tom and Jerry" cartoon series. While there, Jones directed the Academy Award-winning film, "The Dot and the Line."

Jones established his own production company, Chuck Jones Enterprises, in 1962 and produced nine half-hour animation films for television. In the late 1970s, Jones and daughter Linda Jones Clough pioneered a limited-edition art business selling images created by Jones depicting scenes from his most-enduring cartoons. One of those films was the Wagnerian mini-epic, "What's Opera, Doc?"

Jones is survived by his wife, Marian, daughter Linda (by his first wife, Dorothy Webster), a brother, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
