In The Chaos Household

Last Night's TV

Started out with the 'World Series', and was glad to see it go off script. And, instead of receiving a snake's head in a jar, I'm going to have to buy Michelle in Gilbert, AZ, a new Bible, or something with religious significance.

The Emmy's weren't as bad as anticipated, but, I HATE tape-delayed. Korseh, they don't pull that crap with sports. Tape-delaying from the point of origination is quite insulting.

Ellen DeGeneres did a great job. There were rumors in the LA-media that Barbra Streisand was feeling under the weather, and likely not to make it. Leave it to Barbra to prove that the show must go on. And, it only went over by 5 minutes! Amazing!

Tonight, on Faux, Ally McBeal has Dame Edna Everage (the ever-fabulous Barry Humphries), as a guest star.

CBS has its usual line up of sitcoms, and NBC has its mini-series 'Uprising'.

ABC has MNF, with the Broncos at Oakland, and 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire', with the comedians...is it Robin Quiver's turn yet?

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

Bill Clinton & VH1

Bill Clinton At The VH1 'Concert For NYC'

Bill Clinton and VH1 chief John Sykes have made peace after a nasty blowup backstage at last month's Concert for New York, we hear.

The former President ripped into Sykes after firemen and cops heckled Sen. Hillary Clinton when she appeared on stage. "Hillary was practically in tears when she walked offstage," says one witness.

The ex-Prez is said to have made Sykes his whipping boy because he urged New York's junior senator to appear. "There were some tense words," says one source. Another Democratic op confirms, "Bill really lit into him. He told Sykes he was a 'naïve [BLEEP].'"

Things seem to have been patched up as of last week. Hillary appeared with Sykes in Buffalo at a VH1 "Save the Music" event. And Friday, Sykes and the former commander-in-chief spoke on the phone. "This is much ado about nothing," says Bill's spokeswoman Julia Payne. "But what husband wouldn't be angry if people reacted like that to his wife? The point is the Clintons are great friends with John Sykes and will continue to work with him."

Economics & Third World Debt

Bono

Bono put his famous voice to work this week, but he wasn't just belting out U2 songs.

The Irish rocker was with African leaders in Philadelphia discussing third-world debt.

``The debt issue appealed to me because it wasn't throwing pennies at the problem,'' Bono said Friday. ``It was looking at the structure of the problem.''

Bono, long active in economic and social issues around the globe, said debt forgiveness would give struggling countries a chance to succeed. He also plans to focus his attention on trade issues and AIDS.

``I try to keep my rants to a minimum,'' Bono said. ``I don't think they want a lecture when they go to a rock show.''

The weeklong trade summit brought dozens of African finance and economic ministers, and a few heads-of-state, to Philadelphia.

Tom Hanks' Next HBO Project

'John Adams'

After focusing on the formation of the space program and the U.S. effort in Europe during WWII, Tom Hanks' next HBO series will cover the American Revolution.

The actor's Playtone Prods. banner has teamed with HBO to option the rights to ``John Adams,'' the bestselling Simon & Schuster biography of the second U.S. president by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough.

Producer of the $125 million, 10-part miniseries ``Band of Brothers'' and the Emmy-winning 12-parter ``From the Earth to the Moon,'' Playtone will shepherd what will be the second HBO adaptation of a McCullough title. It formerly produced the multiple Emmy-winning adaptation of McCullough's Pulitzer-winning ``Truman.''

Adams' role in the American Revolution has historically been underappreciated compared with that of fellow founding fathers George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin.

But in his sprawling bio, McCullough argues that the Massachusetts lawyer was the unsung catalyst behind Thomas Jefferson's authorship of the Declaration of Independence, an unwavering cheerleader during the battle for freedom against the British, and a guiding hand in the formation of a democratic government once the war was won.

That makes him ideal for a fresh look at the American Revolution. The miniseries is planned to span between 10 and 13 episodes.

``Adams was the soul, the spiritual leader, behind the American Revolution,'' said Mort Janklow, McCullough's longtime literary agent whose Janklow-Nesbit firm brokered the deal with Creative Artists Agency.

The author sparked to Adams, particularly when he found ``five miles of microfilm diaries written by both Adams and his wife Abigail, which read like novels and detail not only the history but a great love story between them,'' Janklow said.

At a time when many big books are struggling in the marketplace after the events of Sept. 11, the McCullough bio has continued to be an unqualified publishing success, despite a daunting $35 cover price. The book, which spent 14 weeks atop the bestseller lists and has gone through 24 printings, is on course to net 1.6 million hardcover copies, making it one of the biggest selling political biographies ever.

The tale was too sprawling for a traditional feature, but then Hanks and his Playtone partner Gary Goetzman sparked to it and offered to use Playtone's discretionary fund to buy it. McCullough and Janklow, pleased with the treatment HBO gave ''Truman,'' warmed to the idea. The deal could ultimately valued in the seven-figure range.

What First Amendment?

Vanessa Leggett

Novice crime writer Vanessa Leggett has spent her 100th day in jail for refusing to surrender her interviews for a book about a Houston society murder.

She said she longs to get back to writing but she's prepared to remain behind bars until January, when the term of the grand jury that requested her notes and the contempt citation against her end.

``I hear traffic reports about the freeway stacked up in the afternoon, and I would love to be in my car in the middle of traffic going home,'' Leggett said in the Houston Chronicle's Wednesday editions.

She writes letters to friends but is wary of doing anything more since her writings could be inspected at any time and confiscated when she is released.

``The most frustrating thing is not to have my computer,'' she said. ``I feel like an amputee.''

A photo of Leggett, 33, is posted prominently on the Web site of the Reporters' Committee for Freedom of the Press and she holds the record for the most time spent in jail for failing to turn over information to authorities. Last weekend, she spent her 100th day at the Houston Federal Detention Center.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that neither she nor journalists have a qualified privilege protecting confidential sources. Prosecutors say she must obey a grand jury subpoena to turn over notes of conversations with dozens of people regarding bookie Robert Angleton.

Angleton, the subject of the grand jury's investigation, was earlier acquitted in state court on charges of hiring his brother, Roger, to kill his wife. Doris Angleton was found shot to death at the couple's home in 1997. Roger Angleton killed himself in jail 10 months later, leaving behind a note exonerating his brother.

After the acquittal, the district attorney requested a review of Angleton's affairs.

Leggett was served with a grand jury subpoena and appeared before the grand jury last December. When she declined to answer questions regarding confidential sources, she was found in contempt. The contempt citation will last until the end of the grand jury's term, but Leggett fears the government might then pursue her on criminal contempt charges.

Not A Nymphomaniac!

Gwyneth Paltrow

'I'm not, like, a nymphomaniac," Gwyneth Paltrow declared in during an interview in Marina del Rey, Calif., responding to what she said was a false assertion in a recent magazine profile.

She said that sort of thing happens a lot.

It seemed appropriate, then, that Paltrow was here to promote "Shallow Hal," a film about dating and misperceptions that opens next Friday. She plays an obese lonely-heart who looks like a catwalk hottie in the eyes of a skin-deep schlub (Jack Black).

On this day at the Ritz Carlton, the 29-year-old Paltrow looked her lovely self in a beige sweater and hip-hugging jeans. She wore no makeup, and just a hint of Lauren Hutton-like gap showed in her front teeth.

Paltrow, despite being a millionaire movie star, said she has had plenty of dating woes. Just going on a date makes her nauseous, she said, and she hates the instant speculation that comes following nights on the town.

"Could I maybe get to first base with this person before I'm marrying them?" she complained.

For the record, Paltrow would not answer the rumor of a liaison with Luke Wilson ("Legally Blonde"). Asked to confirm, she said, "I don't answer those kinds of questions. Sorry."

Truth be told, there are other troubles for Paltrow. You could, say, for example, that she's in a slump after her last two movies struggled at the box-office.

"Duets," a karaoke ensemble directed by her father, Bruce Paltrow, earned just $4.7 million, while "Bounce" collected $36 million, a disappointing take considering the star power of her leading man co-star, Ben Affleck. Recently, fans have been paying as much attention to the lanky blonde's love interests as to her movies. Paltrow, who nabbed the Academy Award for best actress as the Bard's muse in 1998's "Shakespeare in Love," has been starring in Gwyneth in Love.

First her beau was Brad Pitt (touchy subject). More recently, it was Affleck. Then, possibly, it was Scott Speedman, her "Duets" co-star.

Though Paltrow deflected inquiries about her suitors, she did discuss single life in general.

Even the Great Gwynie has been on blind dates. They didn't go well, she claimed. She said she's open to seeing men of all professions, but added there was a comfort level between actors.

Note to whoever catches her eye: Don't get too comfortable. Six weeks is usually her cut-off point for deciding on a relationship.

"If they get past the first date, then their time is running out basically," she said, grinning.

We wouldn't recommend that Paltrow stay in her "Shallow Hal" character while out on the town. She took her fat suit out for a spin one night at the Tribeca Grand hotel - for research, she said.

Normally, she would draw stares and murmurs, but not that night.

"Nobody would look at me," she said.

She learned the gait of an overweight person from her double. The self-esteem issues of her character came naturally.

"I have things I'm insecure about or things I would change," she said. Alas, she declined to name them.

Weight has never been a problem for Paltrow, who was a willowy teen when family friend Steven Spielberg offered her a part in 1991's "Hook" while they waited in line for a movie.

Paltrow, a Manhattan resident who received a blue-blooded education at Spence, had studied at U.C. Santa Barbara barely long enough to go through a bottle of sunblock when she decided to act full-time.

Working with her mother, the Tony-winning actress Blythe Danner, in a summer-stock production of "Picnic" sealed the decision.

Paltrow never considered herself prejudiced against the stout, though she no longer felt the need to distinguish between people who are heavy and very heavy.

She's taken the fashion industry to task for perpetuating the feminine ideal of a coat-hanger figure, and she scolded a magazine for saying that Liv Tyler could lose a few.

"It disgusts me," she said. "It should disgust everyone."

Reminded that most women cannot match Paltrow in the looks department, she replied, "I'll never look like me either, the way they airbrush me."

First In-Store Appearance

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson will make his very first in-store appearance next week at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square.

Epic Records announced Friday (November 2) that the reclusive pop superstar will appear on Wednesday at 3 p.m. to promote his recently released Invincible, which is widely expected to debut at #1 next week.

Jackson will also promote his first all-new studio album in 10 years with a November 13 television special on CBS. The show will feature excerpts from Jackson's star-studded 30th anniversary concerts at Madison Square Garden in September (see).

The CBS special kept Jackson from appearing in more than just the finale of ABC's November 1 broadcast of the "United We Stand — What More Can I Give" concert staged in Washington D.C. last month.

Jackson asked ABC to cut his performances from their special at the last minute because he feared CBS would push back the date of their special, an ABC spokesperson told the Associated Press.

The singer spent several years and millions of dollars on Invincible, which features guest appearances by Carlos Santana, late rapper Notorious B.I.G. and producers Rodney Jerkins, Teddy Riley and Babyface.

And, Even More Michael Jackson!

By Way Of Uri Geller?

Pop legend Michael Jackson has given the most amazing and astonishing interview of his life to the News of the World.

He insists he is about to be tested for anthrax posioning after bursting out in a mystery rash ...and says he once proposed to Princess Diana. "We were like two caged animals," he adds.

Jackson, 43, spoke to the News of the World through his psychic best friend Uri Geller!

Our associate editor Phil Taylor and Uri, the world-famous author, paranormalist and psychic conducted the interview by phone from Uri's Berkshire mansion. This is what Jackson had to say...

NoW: Are you worried about the anthrax attacks in America and are you taking any precautions?

Jackson: Yes. I'm taking medication myself. Because-I don't know if I should say this-I'm very sick.

NoW: You're coughing a lot. Do you have the flu?

Jackson: I don't know. They're going to test me and the children for anthrax. We're all very, very sick right now. I've never felt so bad in my entire life. (Michael has custody of two children by estranged wife Debbie Rowe — Prince Michael Jnr, nicknamed Baby Doo Doo and pictured right with Jacko, is four, and daughter Paris Michael Katherine is two.)

NoW: Are you scared?

Jackson: No. I'm just praying that it's not getting worse. I feel very, very weak and sick.

NoW: Can you describe your symptoms?

Jackson: My chest burns very, very much. It's hard to breathe. And when I swallow it stings. It burns so bad. You can't stop coughing. And your eyes burn. And you're tired all the time. And your back hurts very much. There are some rashes. I've been seeing the doctor every day. They're going to take me in and do tests with me and my children."

NoW: Are you taking anything to treat it?

Jackson: Yes. And I won't open any envelopes now. I don't want to open anything. I'm very concerned about the children. I pray for them constantly. That's my main concern. I want them to be safe. How can you explain to them what's going on, and make them feel everything will be OK?

NoW: Do you think the Afghanistan crisis could result in World War III?

Jackson: I think a lot of what is going on is Biblically prophesied. But God promises he will not let man destroy the earth. That man will try, but he will not let them do it.

NoW: How much do you think America changed after the terrorist attack on September 11?

Jackson: People have never been so close in this country. Everybody has flags up everywhere. They speak again to each other. They say hello. They're hugging. It's like we've gone back to the 1930s or something.

NoW: How did you feel when the terrorists attacked New York?

Jackson: I felt my world end. I felt such grief. I cried and I cried.

The conversation eventually turns to his album.

NoW: You've written a song called Privacy On Invincible. Is it about Princess Diana?

Jackson: Oh boy! Y'know...we shared the same life. We shared the same pain. And that's what we could talk about on the phone. We were like two caged animals. We could talk about it. And that was our therapy-speaking to each other.

NoW: What was the most memorable thing Diana ever told you?

Jackson: To continue the work I'm doing to help the children. And whatever I do, don't stop. To continue to love and to travel and to go to the hospitals. That was her favourite thing about me-how much I loved them, sincerely, from the heart.

NoW: Did you love Princess Diana?

Jackson: I'm crazy about her. I adored her.

NoW: Would you have married Princess Diana if you'd had the chance?

Jackson: Yes! Yes!

NoW: Did you ever propose to her?

Jackson: Uhmm. There was some talk between us.

NoW: So did you have a chance to ask Diana to marry you?

Jackson: Er...oohh.

NoW: Come on, Michael. The whole world wants to know.

Jackson: We talked in that area. I will say that much. I think we lost a precious jewel when she died. We lost the heart of the world. It was like when we lost Mother Teresa. The world isn't the same place any more.

NoW: What's the best thing about being a pop star?

Jackson: Getting to share your gift from God with the world and hope and pray they accept it and love it. I just want to make wonderful music and give them a treat to the eye with song and dance and a sense of escapism, that's all really.

NoW: What was the loneliest time of your life?

Jackson: The loneliest? Oh boy, that's a tough one. I'm always lonely.

NoW: Are you lonely now?

Jackson: Of course. It's part of what I have to go through to be the artist that I am. I have to paint with a palette of different emotions.

NoW: What was the saddest time in your childhood?

Jackson: Wanting to be with other children and I couldn't. I was thrust into an adult world. All my childhood I was with grown-ups-playing nightclubs and fights break out and people drinking-Chicago, New York, Indiana, and all throughout the south and Philadelphia. I was never with children.

NoW: Were you ever physically abused?

Jackson: Of course, of course. I was beat up a lot when I was a little kid.

NoW: When you addressed the Oxford Union earlier this year you criticised your father for not showing you enough love as a child and depriving you of your childhood. Do you regret making that speech?

Jackson: No. Because out of the criticism came forgiveness. The speech was about how to forgive our parents for their wrongdoing and laziness. And I had a lot of harsh bitterness embedded in my soul. It was so bad that whenever I've been in the presence of my father-even now-I feel dizzy. I feel like I'm going to faint.

NoW: Have you spoken to your father since?

Jackson: Yes. He was at the Garden show (Madison Square Garden in New York where he celebrated 30 years in showbiz last month). I love him and I totally forgive him.

NoW: What made you write the track Speechless?

Jackson: Oh I love Speechless. I'd had a water balloon fight with kids. And right afterwards I ran upstairs and wrote Speechless in, like, 45 minutes, I really did.

NoW: Tell me about the message in your song The Lost Children.

Jackson: I'm saying there are souls out there that are lost. People who have disappeared and have never been found again. I remember when I was a little kid, I was in a department store with my mother. I was no more than five, I think. I turned around and she was gone.

I'll never forget the feeling. I felt my world was ending. So imagine really, really being lost. It's like Armageddon of the brain.

NoW: Finally Michael, are you at all optimistic about the world's future?

Jackson: Very. When I see a baby smile, I bubble with a sense of bliss. And I believe in that smile. I see God in that smile.

So, if I read this correctly, the interview was given by Uri Geller, who must have been chanelling Michael Jackson....o-kay. It was too absurd to ignore.
