I've never held a handgun in my life. I did some rifle target shooting with the ROTC in college. That's it with me and firearms. Does this make me less of an American? I think handguns are dangerous, and the more people who walk around carrying them the more dangerous they are. I also don't understand why civilians need to possess AR-15 assault rifles, such as the one used by James Holmes in Colorado.

If a woman gets pregnant unexpectedly in America, she has to worry about how she will get her own prenatal care, medical care for her child, whether or not she will be able to keep her job and how she will pay for daycare for her child so she can continue to support her family. In Canada those problems are eliminated or at least reduced. Where do you think a woman is more likely to feel supported in her decision to keep her baby, and therefore reduce abortions?

Marc Dion: Joe Paterno's Win Loss Record (Creators Syndicate)
The recent forcible sodomy of young boys by a trusted member of Pennsylvania State's athletic department (I can't write his name) indicates not that collegiate sport is evil, but rather that it is meaningless, unnecessary and stupid. Pro sport can be excused as commercialized amusement, like television sitcoms, but college sports are crap.

And baby, if Americans are good at anything, we're good at believing we deserve the most stuff delivered right to our door for free in the time it takes you to finish this paragraph. And why? Because we have the greatest wealth, combined with the worst health, combined with the lousiest educational system to help us figure it all out. U-S-A!

Gail Collins: Small is Beautiful (New York Times)
The typical American business owner does not pay corporate taxes. He or she subtracts expenses from revenues and declares the bottom line as income. There are many, many advantages to this approach. You can avoid corporate tax rates, and it's a lot easier to deduct things. If you're a baker of gourmet cupcakes, you can subtract the entire cost of your new $50,000 ovens from your income, right up front, as well as lunch with your best friend who is also an occasional cupcake purchaser.

With the release of the Freeh report, it's clear to anyone but his kids that Paterno, along with other top Penn State officials, covered up the child sex abuse allegations against assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky out of fear of bad publicity. Covered up child rape. For more than a decade. So it wouldn't harm the football team. I'm not a religious person, but this man doesn't belong in heaven.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

The Romans sacrificed a dog at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that the star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather. What color was the dog?

   Brown                                                      Source

"Dog Days" are the hottest, most sultry days of summer. In the Northern Hemisphere, the dog days of summer are most commonly experienced in the months of July and August, which typically observe the warmest summer temperatures. In the Southern Hemisphere, they typically occur in January and February, in the midst of the austral summer. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather.

The Romans referred to the dog days as di?s canicul?r?s and associated the hot weather with the star Sirius. They considered Sirius to be the "Dog Star" because it is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). Sirius is also the brightest star in the night sky. The term "Dog Days" was used earlier by the Greeks (see, e.g., Aristotle's Physics, 199a2).

The Dog Days originally were the days when Sirius rose just before or at the same time as sunrise (heliacal rising), which is no longer true, owing to precession of the equinoxes. The Romans sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that the star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather.        Source

This whole shooting in Colorado is so awful, can't think of much else media wise, or personally.

The Columbine shooting involved some of my co-worker's families, and before this, in the early 1990's we had the Chuck E Cheese massacre IN AURORA, where 4 people were killed and several wounded there. We had just eaten there a few weeks prior to the incident... I can't pass a CC even today without thinking of that debacle.

Like this maniac, that shooter was a paranoid schizophrenic. (I've had it in my own family, and I am pretty sure you will end up finding it here.)
We need more money for mental health, not more spending cuts - we all pay for it one way or another, you know??

Dog Days were popularly believed to be an evil time "the Sea boiled, the Wine turned sour, Dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies." according to Brady's Clavis Calendaria, 1813.
There's a lot of that going around this year.

Michigan's National Parks

With glowing reviews, Michigan's National Parks are hotspots

National Parks in Michigan are seeing a dramatic increase in tourism this year, aided by warm weather and national attention brought to their picturesque landscapes. Visitors to the three of the state's four parks are up 54 percent over last year, led by a tremendous rise at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The park, which stretches for 35 miles along Northern Michigan's Lake Michigan shoreline, had 59 percent more visitors through June, National Park Service records show...

(Lake Michigan is called by many, including me, "Big Blue"...)

The onslaught at Sleeping Bear Dunes was sparked when ABC's "Good Morning America" viewers voted the Dunes "Most Beautiful Place in America" last August, said Superintendent Dusty Shultz. National Geographic followed in May by calling a visit to the Dunes one of the nation's 10 best summer trips, another in a recent spate of "best of" lists that included the Dunes...

More of the park is being utilized, including new features, such as the first five miles of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. The paved trail for bikers and hikers recently opened and will eventually stretch 27 miles. "For many of our returning visitors, with a 71,000-acre park, they're spreading into new areas in the park, walking a while down the beach and finding solitude and quietness," said Shultz, the superintendent. "Not as popular trails are seeing a lot more traffic"... With glowing reviews, Michigan's National Parks are hotspots | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com

Sleeping Bear truly is a marvelous place. The article does not mention the wildlife which abounds - including cougar sightings in the remote areas of the park. Indeed, the National Park Service has put up signs along some remote trails advising hikers that they are in 'cougar country'... But, I find the dunes and the shore the most inspiring and serene. It's not hard to find a spot along that 35 miles of shoreline that one can be alone with the water, the sand and the breezes...

58 Emmy Nominations

PBS

Public television network PBS surprised Hollywood by landing 58 Emmy award nominations on Thursday, the third-highest total among all the nets, thanks to the critically acclaimed drama "Downton Abbey" and a Sherlock Holmes miniseries.

Cable network HBO topped the list for the 12th straight year with 81 nods, including best drama series nominations for "Game of Thrones" and "Boardwalk Empire." CBS came in second and led broadcast channels with 60 programs, including comedy "The Big Bang Theory" and contest "The Amazing Race."

"Mad Men" had 17 nominations, more than any drama series and last season earned its fourth straight Emmy for best drama.

"Downton Abbey" helped nudge CBS show "The Good Wife" out of the running for best drama, a category that for the first time had no nominees from the major broadcast networks.

Among the other broadcasters, NBC had 51 nominations, ABC came away with 48 and Fox nabbed 26.

Campaign Ads

Colorado

President Barack Obama's re-election team, maintaining an unofficial time-out on full-scale campaigning following a deadly shooting at a movie theater, said on Sunday it will keep its advertisements off the airwaves in Colorado for the rest of the week.

Obama and his Republican rival Mitt Romney both set aside the previously harsh tone of the November 6 election campaign to speak soothingly to the nation on Friday, after the shooting rampage that killed 12 at a midnight movie screening outside Denver.

That prompted speculation about whether the tragedy may have a lasting impact in terms of softening what is widely seen as one of the nastiest election fights in recent memory.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the ads would be kept off the airwaves in Colorado until the end of this week, but was unclear for how much longer the Obama re-election team would keep its activities throttled back.

Salsa Opera

"Maestra Vida"

Singer-songwriter Ruben Blades is joining Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel to perform the Panamanian's salsa opera "Maestra Vida," along with more than 140 musicians and actors in central Caracas.

Tens of thousands were expected for Sunday's concert at the former Carlota airport featuring the Simon Bolivar Youth Symphony and Latin-Caribbean Orchestra under Dudamel's baton.

The 64-year-old Blades says he's living a dream with only the second performance of a work he recorded in 1980 with the Puerto Rican Willie Colon.

Dudamel directs the Los Angeles Philharmonic but told The Associated Press that just because he was raised on Mozart and Mahler doesn't mean he doesn't also have "salsa in his veins."

Reported Missing, Thought Safe

Katherine Jackson

Authorities said Sunday they believe Katherine Jackson, the mother of Michael Jackson and the guardian of his three minor children, is safe in Arizona with family members after she was reported missing.

A person familiar with Katherine Jackson's whereabouts said she is with her daughter Rebbie in Arizona and following a doctor's orders to rest. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Katherine Jackson also hadn't been in contact with her attorneys, who worked Sunday to learn more information about her whereabouts and why she had suddenly become incommunicado, including with her grandchildren.

The family drama unfolded days after it was revealed that some of Katherine Jackson's children had written a letter to the executors of Michael Jackson's estate, alleging his will, which left his fortune to his children, his mother and charity, was a fake.

The undated letter, signed by Janet, Randy, Tito, Rebbie and Jermaine Jackson, claimed Katherine Jackson was being manipulated by the executors, John Branca and John McClain, her health had been affected, and she suffered a mini-stroke.

Warner Mulls Changes

"Gangster Squad"

The Warner Bros. studio is rethinking its plans for the film "Gangster Squad" in light of a scene featuring a movie-theater shooting, but beyond that Hollywood executives expect little fall-out from the mass killing at a Batman screening on Friday in Aurora, Colorado.

Officials at Time Warner Inc-owned Warner Bros. are expected to meet on Monday to discuss whether to remove or edit the "Gangster Squad" shooting scene, or to change the September 7 release date for the film starring Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling, a person familiar with the discussions said.

On Friday, Warner Bros. yanked "Gangster Squad" trailers after a gunman killed 12 and wounded 58 at a midnight premiere of another Warner film, "The Dark Knight Rises." Trailers had included the scene in which men open fire with machine guns on an audience in a movie theater.

Industry experts said moviegoers were likely to move on quickly from the shooting and studios would proceed mostly as planned. Theaters tightened security over the weekend to reassure customers and one chain imposed new rules on costumes.

Says Tattoos Not 'Political'

Yevgeny Nikitin

Russian singer Yevgeny Nikitin, who pulled out of his debut at this year's Bayreuth Festival in a row over a Nazi tattoo, said Sunday the swastika had no political significance for him.

The 38-year-old, who was to have taken the title role in a brand-new production of "The Flying Dutchman" at the month-longsummer music festival dedicated exclusively to the works ofRichard Wagner, said he had not been aware of the Nazi associations of the tattoos.

"It was not clear to me that the symbols that I have tattooed on my chest could have any connotations or even by used by Nazis and neo-Nazis," he wrote in an email to the Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

The bass-baritone said he had them done in Russia in 1989, 1990 and 1991 and chose the symbols from books about Nordic mythology and the tattoo parlour's catalogue.

According to historian Volker Koop, quoted by the Bild am Sonntag, Nikitin's tattoos include the so-called "Tyr" and life runes worn by members and volunteers of the Nazi's SS.

Bayreuth Replacement

Samuel Youn

The Bayreuth opera festival says bass-baritone Samuel Youn has stepped in to take the lead role in "The Flying Dutchman," the annual event's opening production, after Evgeny Nikitin withdrew when it emerged he once had Nazi-related symbols tattooed on his body.

The festival on Sunday listed Youn, who studied in Seoul, Milan and Cologne and has previously performed at Bayreuth, as the lead performer in the production, which opens Wednesday. Youn already had been foreseen as a backup in case Nikitin fell ill.

Los Angeles Fire department spokesman Brian Humphrey said about 400 people were attending a concert for the boy band Midnight Red when the machine released a large amount of carbon dioxide Saturday.

Humphrey says that within seconds, there was zero visibility inside the Avalon nightclub. He says the accident prompted the club's staff to evacuate the venue.

He says six people, ranging from 8 to 20 years old, were taken to the hospital for problems ranging from headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, and cryogenic burns.

Stage Set

Newport Folk Festival

The Newport Folk Festival has sold out before, but never as early as it did this year, with tickets for the two-day event disappearing a full three months in advance.

The seminal music festival returns to Rhode Island's Fort Adams State Park on July 28 with a lineup featuring veteran stars like Arlo Guthrie as well as up-and-comers hoping to turn an appearance at Newport into their big break. Fifty-three years after music impresario George Wein created the festival, and 30 years after it appeared all but dead, its draw is as strong as ever.

"I'm old enough I know that these things go in cycles," Wein, 86, told The Associated Press during an interview in his hotel room the day before his band, the Newport All-Stars, played a date in Boston. "I want people to go to the festival knowing they're going to hear great music. And these bands - they're hugely popular."

Folk music and its place in American music have shifted mightily since Bob Dylan famously traded in his acoustic for an electric guitar here in 1965, but the festival continues to grow. Last year, tickets sold out a few weeks before the event for the first time; this year, it sold out in April.

More Odd Colors

Lobsters

When a 100-pound shipment of lobsters arrived at Bill Sarro's seafood shop and restaurant last month, it contained a surprise - six orange crustaceans that have been said to be a 1-in-10-million oddity.

Reports of odd-colored lobsters used to be rare in the lobster fishing grounds of New England and Atlantic Canada. Normal lobsters are a mottled greenish-brown.

But in recent years, accounts of bright blue, orange, yellow, calico, white and even split lobsters - one color on one side, another on the other - have jumped. It's now common to hear several stories a month of a lobsterman bringing one of the quirky crustaceans to shore.

It's anybody's guess why more oddities are popping up in lobster traps, said Michael Tlusty, research director at the New England Aquarium in Boston.

1979 Tickets Good For Rhode Island Concert

The Who

Fans still holding tickets for a canceled 1979 show in Rhode Island by British rock band The Who can finally use them.

The Who's 1979 concert in Providence was canceled by then-Mayor Buddy Cianci, who cited safety concerns after a stampede before a show in Cincinnati, Ohio, killed 11 people. The band hasn't been to Providence since.

The Who this week announced it will end its latest tour in Providence on Feb. 26 at the same venue where its show was canceled 33 years ago, now called the Dunkin Donuts Center.

General Manager Lawrence Lepore said on Thursday the venue will honor tickets from the canceled 1979 show. Lepore said many ticketholders got refunds for the canceled show in 1979, but others may have held on to their tickets as memorabilia.

"Somewhere, someplace, someone's got it stashed," he said. "The question is, are they willing to give that up? If they are, we're willing to take it."

In Memory

Herbert Vogel

Herbert Vogel, an art collector who amassed over 5,000 works despite a modest income, has died at age 89.

Pieces from Vogel's collection have been distributed to museums throughout the nation. National Gallery of Art spokeswoman Deborah Ziska says Vogel died Sunday of natural causes in New York.

Vogel was among the earliest collectors who championed minimal and conceptual art in the 1960s. He married Dorothy Faye Hoffman in 1962 and inspired her to join him in the art world. They used his salary as a U.S. postal clerk to purchase art while living on what she earned as a librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library.
