Memorial Day

Honoring Our Soldiers, and Those Who Fight For Them

Preamble

Anybody who is willing to die for me is my hero. On Memorial Day, we remember the fallen and honor the men and women in uniform. And we should never forget the people who are fighting just as hard to keep them out of danger. George W. Bush is a girly-man who went AWOL from his duties and is not fit to come out of his hidey-hole on May 30st, much less wear a uniform and shake hands with real soldiers. But that shouldn't stop us from honoring those who serve. As John Kerry, a real war hero, said, we should separate the war from the warriors. Kerry was not only a hero while in combat, he was a hero after his service because he tried to get his fellow soldiers out. All soldiers who got out of Vietnam alive owe John Kerry and the anti-war movement their lives, just as we owe the soldiers who died in the war our eternal graditude.

I don't apologize for failing to fit comfortably within current political labels. Heroes are not heroes because of their ideology, they're heroes because they are fighting for you and me.

Our men and women in uniform are outstanding. They are the best. They are the best trained soldiers in the world, but that's not why they're the best. They have the strongest, most up-to-date weaponry in the world, but that's not why they're the best. They have the most experience military leaders, but that's not why they're the best.

Our soldiers are outstanding because what they are fighting for is outstanding. Any Pvt. Tom, Sgt. Dick or Capt. Mary can be trained to shoot a gun, but only American soldiers know that they are fighting for the USofA.

Merely being well-trained soldiers is not enough: The Soviet Army was good, but they were fighting for the Soviet Union and that was ultimately demoralizing enough that they lost their effectiveness and the USSR collapsed without a shot. Terrorists/insurgents may be fighting for clan or land, but suicide bombers will be forgotten long before their desperate fight is rendered meaningless. All soldiers are taught that they fight an important cause, but politicians and religious zealots will say anything for selfish motivation. The United States brings people together under the rule of law, and our soldiers know that they are fighting for their families, their country and the Constitution that makes us one. Terrorism is the tool of the powerless. A strong military under civilian rule is the pride of the powerful.

This country is best defined by the first half of the first line in the Constitution:
We the people of the United States of America, in order to form a more perfect union....

The King did not bestow. G_d did not grant. History did not decree. We, the people, in union, are writing this set of laws.

We are not perfect, and we never will be. Perfection is for G_d, and we are striving toward perfection. We will never get there, but we're sure going to try.

Striving to fix flaws in a great country is is an act of patriotism no less than joining the armed forces. Protecting our men and women in uniform who are protecting the country is an act of heroism. We know soldiers are there when needed, and we on the homefront want to ensure that you make the ultimate sacrifice only when needed. We know you'll fight where sent and follow orders. Death in service to your country is worth of honor, even if the battle was determined by selfish political motives and not military necessity.

I am a man of peace, but I am not a pacifist. There are times when war is necessary, but they are few. Weak politicians love to make threats that other people die for. Sometimes soldiers get killed when there is another way. We must separate the war from the warrior. In doing so, we must honor those who fight against the war. The warriors fight the battle, and we the people fight to bring them home when the battle no longer serves the country.

To those who support war based on lies and outside interests I say: You are doing this country harm.

To those who are against war I say: Remember that our soldiers are fighting for you.

To our soldiers I say: We've got your back.

There are heroes aplenty. There are too many dead heroes.

This Memorial Day, let us remember the fallen and make sure that they are honored for their ultimate sacrifice. And let us, too, honor those patriots who are trying to form a more perfect union.

'Tank Girl'



Purple Gene's review of the movie "Tank Girl" (1995) directed by Rachel Talalay:

I went down to Long Beach, Ca. for my daughter's graduation from Art School and after the boring cap and gown formalities, the family barbeque and the congratulatory tequila shots….our rather large extended clan sat down in front of the widescreen and put on a campy flick……imagine a story ripped from a comic book…starring Malcolm McDowell, Naomi Watts, Iggy Pop, Ice-T, Don Harvey and….Lori Petty….and imagine a futuristic Earth depleted of it's' water and gas supplies and imagine song and dance numbers and kangaroo men…..If you can imagine all this you have "Tank Girl"…..and we all sat and stared our way through the whole stupid thing….

It's hard to review a movie of "Tank Girls" caliber under any circumstances, but being fairly "Tanked" on "Patron" and lime slices perhaps added to the slapstick idiocy of the over the top images and acting involved….I mean how did they get Ice-T to put on the kangaroo suit…and the make-up on Malcolm McDowell was amazing not to mention Lori Pettys' shaved head and multiple costume changes….and …this was Naomi Watts' first movie made in the USA….and….three of the real life "Spice Girls" tried out for this flick…….

The year is 2033 and the Earth has been hit by a Meteor creating a massive desert environment. Of course the Bad Guy, named Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell - "A Clockwork Orange" - "Caligula" - "Cross Creek") controls all the remaining Water! Out in the remote desert is a ragtag group of rebels headed by Tank Girl (Lori Petty - "Relax... It's Just Sex" - "Route 666" - "Prey for Rock & Roll") the charismatic cartoon character destined to save the world….with her worn out machine guns, hand grenades and of course Tank….

Well Tank Girl teams up with Jet Girl (Naomi Watts - "Mulholland Dr." - "The Ring" - "21 Grams") and together they head straight for the "Water & Power Co." headed by the evil Kesslee. There's torture and explosions and costume changes and ball kicking and dance numbers (Busby Berkeley Style) and more costume changes and through it all Tank Girl with her droll delivery "Bams" and "Pows" her way to victory……….

Purple Gene gives "Tank Girl" 4 shots of aged tequilla out of 10 for being so outrageous and stupid!

Fans Take Action Over Cancellation

'Joan of Arcadia'

Even God is vulnerable to low television ratings. CBS' decision this month to cancel the drama "Joan of Arcadia" after two seasons has baffled and angered its fans. Many are peppering CBS and anyone who will listen with e-mails trying to find some way to keep the series alive.

It's a long shot, at best. The series where God appeared to Amber Tamblyn's title character in the guise of average people won critical praise and an Emmy nomination, but couldn't reach beyond a dwindling cult of supporters.

Fans said they appreciated a drama that talked about spirituality without being preachy, that included God but didn't take religious sides. Several parents wrote that it was one of the few quality shows on television they felt comfortable watching with their children.

CBS is replacing "Joan" with "Ghost Whisperer," featuring as a young wife who communicates with the dead.

Replacing Vending Machines In Japan

Coca-Cola

The emblematic US firm Coca-Cola said it will replace all its 980,000 drink vending machines across Japan in a bid to reduce gas emissions in line with the landmark Kyoto Protocol.

It will take the US beverage giant's Japanese unit at least 15 years to install vending machines without hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, across all the streets and lobbies of Japan.

The United States and Australia are the main holdouts against the Kyoto treaty, which sets targets for industrialized nations to slash their greenhouse gas emissions that lead to global warming.

Crazy Horse Monument

Nearly six decades have passed since work began on the Crazy Horse Memorial, a granite mountain being carved into a colossal sculpture of the Sioux warrior, arm outstretched toward his ancestral homeland, astride a stallion more than two football fields long.

When it's finished - and no one is predicting when that will be - the sculpture will be 563 feet high and 641 feet long. It will be taller than the Washington Monument, and so large that the four presidential heads on Mount Rushmore, 17 miles away, would fit inside the nine-story-high warrior's head.

But with $17 million spent so far, raised largely from visitors and others familiar with the project, only a portion of the monument is finished. Now, for the first time, a national fundraising drive is being quietly started in hopes of accelerating the pace.

The monument was suggested in 1939 by Sioux Chief Henry Standing Bear, who asked Boston-born sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to do the work. Ziolkowski, an acclaimed sculptor from Boston, had worked briefly at Mount Rushmore but didn't get along with chief sculptor Gutzon Borglum.

After considering the project for years, Ziolkowski began sculpting the mountain on June 3, 1948. He doggedly pursued it for the rest of his life, rejecting federal money and other government help.

Ziolkowski died in 1982, but his widow, Ruth, and seven of their 10 children have continued the labor of love.

Yearbook Prank

High school yearbooks were recalled so that administrators could black out a joke caption under one student's picture: "most likely to assassinate resident Bush."

Mesa Ridge High School officials recalled about 100 yearbooks earlier this month and had staffers use markers to obscure the words in them and in the still-undistributed copies. The Secret Service even launched an investigation.

"They kind of ruined our yearbook," said Christina Tredway, who just graduated from the school just south of Colorado Springs. Most students thought the blacking-out was a bad idea since the caption obviously was a joke, she said.

What chance do the New Jersey Devils give a proposal that would give the pro hockey franchise a less demonic name? Think hell freezing over.

"I can assure you the Devils name will never change, and I think there are more important things to be thinking about than something that will never happen," team CEO Lou Lamoriello said. "It's who we are and what we want to be."

State Assemblyman Craig Stanley is taking issue with a satanic symbol representing the state's National Hockey League team, which has won three Stanley Cup championships.

The mythical Jersey Devil - with bat-like wings, a forked tail and oversized claws - was said to terrorize Pine Barrens dwellers in the 18th-century after being born the 13th child to poor South Jerseyans and morphing into a dinosaur-like beast.

Suicide Hotline

A Canadian province will shut its 24-hour suicide hotline and replace it with one that operates only during business hours.

Prince Edward Island, a small province on Canada's East Coast, says it is too expensive to operate the hotline around the clock. Starting June 1, it will be open only between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province with a population of about 137,000 people, is trying to tame its budget deficit. The hotline cost about C$30,000 ($24,000) a year to run.

Two decades after the original Live Aid, when rock stars descended on Philadelphia and London to raise money for Ethiopian famine relief, singer-activist Bob Geldof is planning another star-studded, humanitarian event.

Live 8 is set for Saturday, July 2, on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, a city spokeswoman said. The event will coincide with a second show in London, publicist Laura Perez told The Philadelphia Inquirer for Sunday's editions.

Details, including the lineup and other possible venues, remain secret. They are expected to be unveiled Tuesday morning at joint press conferences in Philadelphia and London, according to Perez, who is handling the press event.

The name "Live 8" is a nod to the G-8 summit, a meeting of the world's leading powers, set to start days later in Scotland. Geldof has pressed for the world's wealthiest countries to do more to fight famine and poverty in Africa.

Oscar Brown Jr.

Oscar Brown Jr., a songwriter who composed lyrics for Miles Davis and shared billings with other jazz greats, died Sunday after a brief illness. He was 78.

Brown was hospitalized in mid-April after emergency surgery to stop the spread of an infection in his lower spine. His niece, Lauren Hudson, said her uncle had been released from the hospital but was readmitted about two weeks ago. He died at Saint Joseph Hospital from complications of the illness.

Brown was known for his compositions "The Snake," "Signifyin' Monkey" and his lyrics for Miles Davis' "All Blues." Early in his career, Brown shared bills with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane.
