In The Chaos Household

Last Night

The kid induced us to watch faux tonight.

Tonight, Monday, it's the 'Big Dance' on CBS. A rerun of 'Raymond' is also scheduled, as is a fresh episode of 'Baby Bob'.

NBC has a fresh 'Shared Gold Skating Champions Return To The Ice', then a fresh 'Third Watch' followed by a rerun 'Crossing Jordan'.

ABC opens the evening with another regurgitated so-called 'Funniest Videos', then their Faux-ripped-off 'Bachelor', and wraps the evening with a fresh 'Once & Again' (which was canceled last week).

The WB has 2 reruns of '7th Heaven'.

Faux has a rerun 'Boston Public' and a fresh 'The American Embassy'.

UPN has a night of reruns, 'The Hughleys', 'One On One', 'The Parkers', and 'Girlfriends'.

'The Osbournes' air at 11pm (est) on MTV. Tuesday at 6pm (est), MTV will present a 2-hour block of 'The Osbournes'.

Did you see the autographed picture of 'Garbage' that 'our' Alex scored for BartCop?
Woo-hoo, way-to-go, Alex!

So, since 'The Osbournes' seems to be the 'break-away' hit of the season, it seems only fitting that we devote some space to it.

Any volunteers?.

Looking for updates, synopsi, whatever....

Send me your thoughts, please.

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

Rumsfeld

World affairs today can sure be confusing!

President Bush tried his bestest to simplify the picture as Good vs. Evil, but it's still a jumble! Who knew all those crazy Dorkistan countries even existed?! Now The Infinite Jest rides to the rescue with a set of educational trading cards.

Fun to collect! Fun to trade! Fun to drain a box of inkjet cartridges!

Reopening The Apollo Theatre

'V-Day Harlem'

Tears mixed with laughter as an all-star cast of black, Hispanic and Asian performers staged a version of "The Vagina Monologues" at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem.

Salma Hayek, Rosie Perez, LisaGay Hamilton, Lynn Whitfield, rapper Eve, and several other artists took part in "V-Day Harlem," a benefit Saturday to raise awareness about violence against women.

The actress read passages from Eve Ensler's hit stage show. The dramatic and comedic performances were interspersed with performances from Eve, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Denyce Graves, the Eddie Torres Latin Dance Company and R&B singer Amel Larrieux.

Among the celebrities in attendance were Cynthia Nixon, of HBO's "Sex and the City," and actor Edward Norton, Hayek's boyfriend.

The event served as the reopening of the Apollo Theatre, which had closed for several weeks of renovations.

Faux News Does That To Me Too

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton wasn't rooting for his old nemesis Paula Jones when she squared off last month against ice-skater Tonya Harding. Newsweek's Jonathan Alter reports the former president remarked: "That Tonya Harding looks like a pretty tough cookie to me." Harding easily beat Jones, the former Arkansas civil servant who sued Clinton for sexual harassment. Newsweek also tells how Clinton called his trusted aide Julia Payne one night at 1 a.m. ranting and raving. "Sir," she interrupted, "have you been watching Fox [News Channel] again?"

'A Hole Surrounds A Donut'?

Dennis Miller

Six and a half months after Sept. 11, Bush bashing is okay with Dennis Miller again.

The comic fearlessly told an L.A. gathering last week, "I like Bush because he's smart enough to know that he's not particularly smart, so he surrounds himself with smart people. Much in the same way a hole surrounds itself with a doughnut."

While serving as host of Tuesday's benefit for Cedars-Sinai Research Center for Women's Cancers, Miller also took on the embattled former chief of Enron. Should Ken Lay be imprisoned, the comic said, "He is going to a place where Mr. Lay will go from being his real name to his nickname."

Bobblehead Doll Replaces Human Spokesman

Martin Mull

A dashboard bobblehead doll has evicted comedian Martin Mull from his role as spokesperson for the Red Roof Inns motel chain. The first campaign featuring "Red," a business-attired character with a full head of flaming-red locks, breaks nationwide on April 1. The tagline for the effort is, "Red knows the road."

Rob Bagot, evp and creative director at Hill, Holliday, noted that the Red character was used by the agency when it pitched the account last fall. The client was so smitten by the little briefcase-toting redhead that it decided to enlist the doll's services full-time, Bagot said.

With Red, the new campaign aims to convey Red Roof's empathy for the road traveler. Red is "the ultimate friend of the traveler," Bagot said. "He's been everywhere and seen everything because he lives on the dashboard of the car." Five new TV spots highlight the special amenities available at any of the more than 330 Red Roof Inns nationwide.

The Ever-Fabulous Liz Smith - Part 1

Bill Clinton

If you read the New York Post or New York Times perhaps you saw a group photo or a report last week in which I appeared with former President Bill Clinton, Diane Sawyer, Ann Richards, Janice and Billy Crystal, Marsha and Robin Williams. We were the guests of media maestro Joe Armstrong at Michael's restaurant on West 55th Street. The genesis of this picture getting into print is amazing.

Joe and Robin have known each other through mutual charity work for 15 years and so a casual get together seemed indicated when the great comic was in NYC doing his concerts at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center before his 26-city tour across the country.

Joe also arranged for a private picture of the group as a personal keepsake. While we were posing, The Post's intrepid Tamara Beckwith dashed in from the sidewalk with her camera under her coat, snapped us and dashed out. The Secret Service was at the door and also sitting at a table nearby but Ms. Beckwith eluded them on all counts. It was quite funny since we'd just been discussing the newspaper at our table. Mr. Clinton had opined that, though The Post dislikes him on ideological grounds, he finds the tabloid "refreshing, entertaining and breezy. It has impact!"

Billy Crystal was aghast at what had happened. His first reaction was, "What if it had been a gun instead of a camera?" Bill Clinton just shrugged.

Back On Tour

Heart

Heart are hitting the road this summer for a twenty-six-city tour -- their first in nine years. Ann and Nancy Wilson will be joined by Ben Smith on drums, Tom Kellock on keyboards, Scott Olson on guitar and Mike Inez of Alice in Chains on bass. The tour kicks off on June 21st in Fargo, North Dakota, and wraps up in their hometown of Seattle on August 8th.

The Wilson's have been at work on a new album, their first since 1993's Desire Walks On. "It will be just the two of us this time," Ann Wilson told Rolling Stone last October. "We expect to play most of the instruments ourselves."

Bill Clinton

Another unexpected development, of course, was that George Stephanopoulos, the ex-Clinton aide who wrote a negative book when he left the White House, passed by our table. The Times says he and Clinton shook hands. I didn't see that. This is what I heard:

George: "Nice to see you." Bill: "Congratulations. Are you happy?" George: "I'm very happy." (Stephanopoulos is recently married and now expecting a baby with Alexandra Wentworth.) Was this a big reconciliation? I don't think so.

House Sparred

John Nash

John Nash, whose life was chronicled in the Oscar-winning movie "A Beautiful Mind," will get to keep his home.

State and local officials rejected a plan to condemn the property where Nash has lived for 30 years with his wife, Alicia, and their son.

State transportation officials said Thursday they would not seek to destroy the home. They told township planners they wanted to keep the bridge where it is and widen it.

That might mean more traffic going by the Nash home, but Mrs. Nash said that "doesn't bother me nearly as much as losing the house."

The Ever-Fabulous Liz Smith - Part 3

Bill Clinton

Bette Midler sent us bottles of Roederer's Cristal champagne because she was out of town. A few people took a sip. But the big plus, aside from the conversation and Robin's irrepressible "bits" done off the top of his head about everything from the Church to the Hamptons, was a serving of high calories. Bill Clinton said, "I want some of those," pointing to another table. The waiter said, "Oh, french fries." The prez then said, "I didn't even have to say the words. I hate being so transparent." We had them and they were great.

When the former governor of Texas told the former president of the U.S. how sad she was about his dog, Buddy, his face fell. But he brightened up saying he would get a new lab in June from the late Buddy's breeder. Wearing a yellow shirt and a red tie, Clinton said he was "sprucing up my image." He then told us some very funny stories of the way his mother dressed him as a kid and how he was "fat and resembled Baby Huey."

A modest and shy Billy Crystal did tell us he and his high-school sweetheart of 32 years (Janice) are happy to be back living in New York. He has started work on his Robert De Niro comedy sequel to "Analyze This," titled "Analyze That." (Now there's a title!) Billy watched the Oscars by himself because he finds if he is in a group, as a frequent host of the awards, people spend too much time on his reactions and it makes him uncomfortable. He said he liked the show this year.

Marsha Williams said she wouldn't accompany Robin on all of his tour. But the reason he launched it is because after 9/11, he found himself overwhelmed by how many people "need to and want to laugh." This comic genius hasn't toured for 15 years. He is really looking forward to joining his pal Lance Armstrong in the "Ride for the Roses" benefit in Austin on April 13. It attracts 6,000 people annually. Robin and Lance often take 60-mile rides together and the actor's muscular physique may account for some of his unending energy.

Oh yes, I notice that The Post inquired as to who picked up the check for the lunch? Texan Armstrong has his generous side. He lofted the hefty bill. I saw it; it ran around $800.

New Tourist Site

Selena

Seven years after Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla was murdered, thousands of fans still flock here to see her statue, grave and the South Texas home where she was raised.

Selena was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldivar on March 31, 1995, at a Corpus Christi motel. Saldivar, former president of Selena's fan club, was convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence.

Selena had five CDs on the Billboard 200 chart and won a Grammy Award in 1995 for her album, "Selena Live."

Employees at the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau created a tourist map of Selena-related sites and have given them to visitors for the past four years.

Jacquelyn Woll

Jacquelyn Woll, a child actress who appeared in movies with 1930s screen legends Laurel and Hardy, Marie Dressler and Little Rascal Spanky MacFarland, has died. She was 73.

Woll died of a heart attack March 21 at her home in Granada Hills, her son, Martin A. Woll, said Saturday.

Woll, who began her Hollywood career at 3, was billed as Jacquie Lynn in her movies. She appeared in at least two Our Gang comedies, including "Free Wheeling," in which she is a passenger in the gang's mule-pulled taxi wagon and says, "Spanky, don't you think we're going rather faw-st?"

She also appeared in a memorable scene in the Laurel and Hardy film "Pack Up Your Troubles" in which she reads "Goldilock and the Three Bears" to a sleepy Laurel.

Working under Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, she also appeared with Dressler and Polly Moran in "Prosperity" and Ann Dvorak in "The Strange Love of Molly Luvain."

Her career came to an abrupt end before she was 5 when her new stepfather asked more for her services than the studio was willing to pay. She later attended UCLA but left to get married before graduating, Woll said.

"She enjoyed acting at that age, but she never had the aspirations to go back to it," her son said. "She wanted to be a mom and she was a great one."

Woll is survived by her husband, Martin P. Woll, a daughter, two other sons, and five grandchildren.

Barry Took

Barry Took, one of Britain's most famous comedians and comic writers who helped produce such shows as "Monty Python's Flying Circus," died Sunday at the age of 73, his family announced.

Took, once described as one of the funniest men in Britain, died at a north London nursing home after a battle with cancer, his family said.

Took had an unusually long career as a standup comic, radio scriptwriter writer, television executive and film critic.

He was responsible for celebrated radio series like "Round the Horne," "The Army Game," "Educating Archie" and "Bootsie and Snudge." The shows were a vital part of British life in the austere decades after World War II, when food rationing lasted for years and the country struggled to adjust to its diminished role in the world.

Took also worked on the U.S. television show, "Laugh In."

A native of London, Took was dogged by self-doubt, depression, domestic problems and ill-health. His two marriages ended in divorce.

Leaving school at the age of 15, he worked as any office boy and a cinema projectionist before serving in the air force, where he was involved in entertainment programs.

Took later worked as a stage hand and comic. In his autobiography, "A Point of View," he recalled that he once did 12 shows in the city of Wolverhampton without raising a single laugh.

In 1957 he began working with fellow comic Marty Feldman, and they went on to create and write some of the most successful radio shows of the 1960s. The pair turned out scripts at a rapid pace, often compiling four or five shows a week.

Although his working life revolved around comedy, Took once said: "I don't like comedians very much because I don't like neurotic people. I think they should go and get cured. I'm mad too but I'm as cured as I can get."

Dubbed Baron von Took by a television executive, he was involved in plans for a show called "Baron von Took's Flying Circus" which eventually became "Monty Python's Flying Circus."

In later life, Took wrote film reviews for Punch magazine and did panel shows on radio.

Took is survived by two daughters and two sons.
