Baron Dave Romm

Sick Day

By Baron Dave Romm

Baron Dave was hanging out at the Music Track at Marscon , , and hoped to have a fresh report but a) he's been fighting off a cold, more-or-less successfully and can barely talk. Mostly he's been putting a lot of energy into sleeping; and b) there are a LOT of new CDs out for the con, and he hasn't had a chance to listen to any of them.

On the other hand, he had the honor of being in the background for his favorite Luke Ski song during the great Luke Ski DVD concert .

So he's taking a sick day this week.

"I used to think it was a terrible thing that life was so unfair. Then I thought, 'what if life *were* fair, and all of the terrible things that happen to us came because we really deserved them?' Now I take great comfort in the general unfairness and hostility of the universe."
-- Marcus Cole, "Babylon 5"

Thanks (again), Baron Dave!

In this concert of life, choose your song and don't stop playing it.

Marilyn Manson: The Beliefnet Interview
... Manson has promised to "balance my songs with a wholesome Bible reading." The Bible readings, he says, will allow his fans to "examine the virtues of wonderful 'Christian' stories of disease, murder, adultery, suicide, and child sacrifice. Now that seems like 'entertainment' to me."

Shauna Swartz: Welcome to the New Heather Matarazzo (afterellen.com)
Actor Heather Matarazzo gets giddy every time she talks about the new television series she'll be appearing in, The Rules: A Lesbian Survival Guide. She goes as far as calling it "the most spiritually transforming experiences in my life." Based on a short film by Lee Friedlander and Michelle Paradise, the show will air on Logo next fall.

John Morgan Wilson: The rocky political trail that led to Brokeback (Advocate.com)
The Brokeback Mountain phenomenon didn't happen by accident-it comes after decades of gay activism, political progress, and gradual changes in the media's coverage of homosexuality

Roger Ebert: Dave Chappelle's Block Party (R) (3 stars)
Dave Chappelle appears to be a nice man, in addition to being a funny one, and the buried message in this movie may be: "Can I sign a $50 million contract and still remain the person I am happy to be?"

Roger Ebert: The Boys of Baraka (3 stars)
If I were in charge of everything, and I certainly should be, I would divert billions of dollars into an emergency fund for our schools. I would reduce classroom size to 15 or 20. I would double teachers' salaries. I would fund boarding schools to remove the most endangered children from environments that are killing them. I would be generous and vigilant about school lunch programs and medical care for kids. I would install monitors on the television sets in the homes of these children, and pay a cash bonus for every hour they are not turned on during homework time. I would open a storefront library on every other block.

Reveals Heart Transplant

Robert Altman

Legendary film director Robert Altman revealed on stage at Sunday's Academy Awards that he was only alive to collect his lifetime achievement award thanks to a heart transplant he kept secret for over a decade.

"I always thought this kind of award meant that it was over," Altman, 81, said. "I'm here, I think, under false pretenses. I think I have to become straight with you. Ten years ago, 11 years ago I had a heart transplant, a total heart transplant."

"I got the heart of, I think, a young woman who was in about in her late 30s. By that kind of calculation you may be giving this award too early because I think I've got about 40 years left," he said.

The director of such movies as "MASH," "Gosford Park," "Nashville" and "The Player" told reporters backstage that he kept the transplant secret, fearing he would not be hired to work again.

'Peace Mom' Still Campaigning

Cindy Sheehan

Lunching in the Mission District in a dark skirt, black cardigan and unfussy hairdo, Cindy Sheehan looks every bit the anonymous suburban mom she was not long ago.

In the months since she captured national attention with her August vigil outside resident Bush's Texas ranch, Sheehan has gone from grieving mother to widely recognized anti-war campaigner.

"I really have to stay focused every day on my mission. That's bringing the troops home. This war's illegal and immoral and my son should be alive and nobody else should be dying," she says.

Chooses Poker Over Oscars

Jennifer Tilly

The transmogrification is complete. Actress-turned-poker-star Jennifer Tilly has become so infatuated with high stakes Texas Hold 'Em, that for the first time in more than a decade, she's skipped the red carpet of the Oscars for the green felt of the poker table.

Tilly forewent Oscar glitz and joined 63 other poker stars, including boyfriend, poker professional Phil "Unabomber" Laak, for the 2006 National Heads Up Poker Championship in Las Vegas on the weekend.

Tilly was knocked out Saturday in the first round of the single-elimination, one-on-one tournament, which has $1.5 million in prize money up for grabs and will be televised on NBC over six Sundays starting April 16. The winner is to be crowned Monday.

Magazine Debuts In China

Rolling Stone

The face of Cui Jian, the godfather of Chinese rock and roll, graced the cover of the first Chinese edition of the classic American rock and roll magazine, Rolling Stone.

Besides articles and a full interview with Cui, the magazine carried stories on Taiwan pop star Jay Chou, Japan's hip-hop artist Nigo and China's Internet blogger famous for her sex dairy, Muzimei, to round out its Asian input into the magazine.

Most of the first Chinese edition was devoted to Western pop and entertainment, including an article on the famous personalities like John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Hunter S. Thompson who have been featured on the cover of Rolling Stone.

Honored by Dublin

Bob Geldof

Bob Geldof, the singer who has won international acclaim for humanitarian efforts, received the "freedom of the city" Sunday from his hometown - an honor that permits him the rarely exercised right to graze sheep in the city's central park.

"It is raining and it's cold, but it is a beautiful day," Geldof said outside the official residence of Dublin's lord mayor, Catherine Byrne, where he accepted a Waterford crystal globe in recognition of his two decades of fundraising for the poor.

He was joined Sunday by his 91-year-old father, Bob Geldof Sr., and three of his daughters.

Comes To Early End

Bolton's Punctuality Drive

An unpopular punctuality drive launched in the U.N. Security Council last month by U.S. Ambassador John Bolton came to an abrupt end on Thursday when Argentina took over the council's rotating presidency.

Bolton had cracked the whip while presiding over the 15-nation U.N. body in February, starting meetings precisely on time, even with empty chairs in the room, as part of a plan to modernize council operations.

Bypassing the U.S. Senate, resident George W. Bush sent Bolton to the United Nations last August with instructions to shake up the world body.

Burqas are displayed at the headscarf exhibition in the Amsterdam Historical Museum February 28, 2006. In December 2005, parliament voted to forbid women from wearing a burqa or any Muslim face coverings in public, justifying the move in part as a security measure. The cabinet is awaiting the results of a study into the legality of such a ban under European human rights laws, before making its final decision. The results are expected in the second half of March 2006.

Helping Bands Conquer America

UK Government

Buoyed by the recent American success of such acts as Coldplay, James Blunt and Franz Ferdinand, the British music industry is once again focusing its energy on the U.S. market. And the music community here has found an important ally: the government.

On March 3, Secretary of State for trade and industry Alan Johnson announced a series of initiatives to "help British music companies break into the American market."

This government-industry partnership comes as the Brits prepare to send their biggest contingent of executives and artists to the Austin-based festival-cum-trade show South by Southwest, which runs March 15-19. As part of a mission organized by indie labels body AIM and supported by the UKTI, nearly 100 British music companies will have a presence at SXSW. More than 120 acts from the British Isles will perform.

Concert Riot

'British Invasion 2K6'

Rioting broke out Saturday night at British punk band concert, injuring several people and destroying two police cars, officials said.

Some in the crowd of about 1,500 at the "British Invasion 2K6" show pelted police with rocks and bottles, forcing the officers to withdraw, police spokesman Sgt. Rick Lindsey said.

Two concertgoers were hospitalized with serious injuries, and two officers suffered minor injuries, he said.

Local women carry their tapioca after drying it near a gas flare belonging to the Shell oil company in Utorogun, Nigeria, Sunday, March 5, 2006. Armed militants in Nigeria vowed Sunday to cut daily oil exports from this West African nation's troubled delta region by another 1 million barrels by the end of March, as OPEC nations prepared for a strategy meeting in Vienna this week. A wave of militant assaults on pipelines and oil facilities has already cut production by 455,000 barrels per day in Nigeria, which normally exports 2.5 million barrels of crude daily.

Ex-CIA Worker Sues

T.J. Waters

A member of the CIA's first post-9/11 class is alleging in a federal lawsuit that the agency violated his First Amendment rights by ordering dozens of deletions in his book about spy training after initially approving it.

T.J. Waters' book - "Class 11: Inside the CIA's First Post-9/11 Spy Class" - chronicles his year at the CIA's training facility where recruits learn how to use disguises, how to withstand interrogation techniques and other spycraft. Known as "The Farm," the center's precise location, near Williamsburg, Va., remains classified.

Waters said his class of more than 100 included a New York comedian, an executive chef, a professional athlete and the fiancee of a World Trade Center victim.
