Bartcop.com stickers in various forms

Bartcop.com stickers are nifty! I scanned one in and have spent all day playing with various Photoshop filters. No music or politics today. Forthwith is a series of thumbnails. The larger images are on my romm.org server, saving Marty the disk space. These thumbnails are replicated at http://www.romm.org/bartgallery1.heml . Feel free to download the files yourself. (I assume it's okay with Bart to put them on your site in various ways.) I'm only a second degree PhotoShop Wizard. Someone else is likely to be able to do more. Either use the original black scan (the first one) or I can send the much larger original file upon request.

The real files look much better then the 3" thumbnails. On the other hand, the real files are much larger than the stickers themselves. Ah, 300 dpi scanners...

Baron Dave Romm is a conceptual artist and a noble of Ladonia with a radio show, a very weird CD collection and an ever growing list of political links. Dave Romm reviews things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music recommendations from Bartcop-E , and you can hear the last two Shockwave broadcasts in Real Audio (scroll down to Shockwave). Thanks to everyone who has sent me music to play on the air.

trailers of mass destruction

This phototoon is a moldy oldy. But Dick Cheney decided this past week to resurrect the issue in an NPR interview with Juan Williams. The fact that Juan did not challenge the clearly specious assertion that these trailers are associated with WMD related program activities leads me to believe Juan is an idiot.

Taking Sides

Stars

Madonna is behind Wesley Clark. Uma Thurman backs John Kerry. Paul Newman, Martin Sheen and Susan Sarandon are with Howard Dean: Hollywood stars are choosing sides in the Democratic presidential race.

Besides Madonna, the pop star who recently announced her support for Clark with much fanfare, the former NATO commander has received backing from former "Cheers" star Ted Danson and Barry Levinson, director of "Good Morning Vietnam" and "Rain Man."

Clark also has been endorsed by controversial filmmaker Michael Moore, and has visited Los Angeles in efforts to court more celebrities as he seeks the nomination to challenge resident George W. Bush in the November 2 vote.

Among the celebrities who have campaigned for Dean are Sheen, who plays a US president on the television series "The West Wing," actor/director Rob Reiner, and actress Sarandon.

According to MTV, actress Thurman has given money to Kerry, the winner in Iowa and current frontrunner in the polls, and songwriter Carole King has organized a benefit concert for the Massachusetts senator.

Of the four main Democratic candidates, the one that has perhaps received the least celebrity support is North Carolina Senator John Edwards. His only noticeable star-support has come from the rock band Hootie and the Blowfish.

Leaving '20/20'

Barbara Walters

Groundbreaking U.S. television newswoman Barbara Walters will step down as co-host and chief correspondent of ABC's '20/20' news magazine in September, ending her 25-year association with the program, the network said on Sunday.

Walters, who has interviewed people ranging from Richard Nixon to Fidel Castro to Martha Stewart, said in a statement posted on ABC News's Web site she was leaving the program earlier than expected to "have more flexibility in my life without the responsibilities of a weekly news magazine."

The network, which is owned by Walt Disney Co., said Walters will remain an active member of its news division and "substantially increase" the number of prime-time news specials she does.

Eyeing More Dates

Simon & Garfunkel

Plans are under way for another leg of the hugely successful Simon & Garfunkel reunion tour, Billboard.biz reports.

The 2003 outing, dubbed Old Friends, wrapped Dec. 21 in Tampa, Fla., having grossed $53 million after playing to 500,000 people. It was the pair's first major tour since 1983.

North American arenas are on hold. Art Garfunkel's manager, John Scher, confirmed that the duo has tentative plans to play more dates, beginning in the latter half of June and running through August. The Everly Brothers would remain as support.

Shows Che Film

Robert Redford

Robert Redford showed his new film about Che Guevara, "The Motorcycle Diaries," to the widow and children of the legendary guerrilla fighter on Sunday.

He watched the film with Guevara's widow Aleida, daughter Aleidita and son Camilo, as well as Ramiro Valdes, a top military commander in Cuba's communist government who fought with Guevara and Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra mountains.

The film, directed by Brazilian Walter Salles, is based on the diaries that Guevara wrote on a nine-month bike trip through South America in 1952 when he was an asthmatic 23-year-old medical student.

Force Cops to Leave Work

Marijuana Fumes

The fumes from several tons of marijuana stored in an Israeli police station were so strong that officers had to leave their work place.

The police station in the town of Dimona in the southern Negev Desert is used to store all the marijuana confiscated along the Israeli-Egyptian border, a busy smuggling route. Between three and four tons were seized in the past two months.

Finally, it was too much for the officers working next door to the storage room, and they had to leave their offices.

"Every time I came to work I felt very bad, like I was high. The smell of the marijuana was killing us, we couldn't work," one officer told the Israeli newspaper Maariv.

More 'Fair & Balanced'

Dennis Miller

Dennis Miller has usually been happy to spray his acerbic wit across the political spectrum, but things will be different on his new CNBC talk program. Resident Bush is in a mock-free zone.

This is the Miller who has appeared at fund-raisers for Bush, ridden with the president on Air Force One, sat in the gallery at last week's State of the Union speech and was even talked about as a Republican senatorial candidate in California.

CNBC is comfortable with an unabashed Bush fan in the middle of its prime-time schedule in an election year. CNBC President Pamela Thomas-Graham said she expects John McEnroe, whose own talk show will immediately follow Miller's starting this spring, to have different views.

"When we hired Dennis, we knew exactly what his political beliefs were and his viewers will hear them," Thomas-Graham said. "The reason we hired him is we think he's witty, smart and interesting. He's part of a lineup. He's not the only person in the lineup."

The liberal media watchdog Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting accused CNBC of a conflict of interest in hiring GOP consultant Mike Murphy, an adviser to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, as a producer for Miller's show.

Schwarzenegger is scheduled to be a guest on Miller's first show Monday. CNBC points out that Murphy is one of several staff members, and that Miller is looking forward to having guests with varied views.

Set Mass Free-Fall Record

672 Skydivers

In a world record for a mass jump, 672 skydivers from 42 countries leaped from six aircraft over the Thai capital on Saturday, organizers said. At least three jumpers were injured upon landing.

Wind blew several skydivers off the landing zone near Bangkok's Grand Palace, and reporters saw at least three jumpers taken to a hospital with injuries. None was believed life-threatening.

The divers leapt out of six C-130 military transport planes at 7,000 feet. Several landed in trees and one hit the roof of a university building.

A recently taken undated hand out photograph received on January 25, 2004 shows a fake baby dragon encased in a 30 inch (0.76 metres) jar which was discovered by David Hart in a garage in Oxfordshire, southern England. A metal tin found alongside the dragon contained paperwork written in an old-fashioned German style of the 1890s, a time when their was intense rivalry between Britain's and Germany's scientists. The documents suggest that Britain's Natural History Museum turned the dragon away and sent it to be destroyed, only for the jar to be intercepted by David Hart's grandfather, Frederick Hart, who worked as a porter.
