Re: Groper's Nurses

Hey Marty,

Just makes you wonder whether the nurses on call that night were too busy to help him!!!!

Staffing ratios, you know. I'll bet his nurses were professionals and he was treated far better than he deserved.

Oh By The Way, Assembly Constitutional Amendment 23 (ACA 23) has just been introduced by assemblyman Keith Richman to privatize the pensions of public servants. You would think that after getting soundly defeated at the polls last months that they would back off, but no. The bastards are STILL going after the life savings of teachers, nurses, cops, and firefighters. The bill probably won't make it through the state assembly, but even so, it would be nice just to do our jobs and eventually retire with dignity.

Why is that too much to ask? Why do we have to keep fighting?

Teacher Ed

Thanks, Ed!
I kinda wonder why Ahnold was taken to UC Davis, as opposed to, oh, let's say, Sutter Memorial?
Sutter Memorial is within blocks of both the capitol & the hotel where Ahnold stays.
UC Davis is across town & up the freeway a piece.
As to their wanting to privatize the pensions - that's what economic privateers do.
Same reason Chuck Quackenbush was never prosecuted.
They do it because they can. IOKIYAR.

Michael Schwartz: The Top Ten Ways to Debate Iraq (Tomdispatch.com. Posted on alternet.org)
Among those who oppose the war, there are lurking questions that haunt our discussions. Here are a few pointed answers.

Terrence McNally: Real Leaders Have Heart (AlterNet.org)
Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin: If Bush had challenged us, as Roosevelt did after Pearl Harbor, he could have had the public health system expanded to worry about potential biological attack, he could have had more people in the Peace Corps and Teacher Corps, he could have more of us studying languages and cultures just as we did after Sputnik. The home front could have mobilized as a result of September 11. If he were a different leader, he could have said "No more tax cuts, I'm going to use it for the public good." Roosevelt said, "I'm no longer Doctor New Deal, I'm Doctor Win the War."

Annalee Newitz: Music Companies Get Mean (AlterNet.org)
Why is Sony BMG using its CDs to sneak unidentified software onto people's computers?

Joe Bob Briggs: My stunted, unhappy, unnatural childhood (joebobbriggs.com)
I didn't realize until this past year that I had a stunted, unhappy, unnatural childhood development. My mama WORKED all the time.

Roger Ebert: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrob (3 stars)
This is a film situated precisely on the dividing line between traditional family entertainment and the newer action-oriented family films. It is charming and scary in about equal measure, and confident for the first two acts that it can be wonderful without having to hammer us into enjoying it, or else. Then it starts hammering. Some of the scenes toward the end push the edge of the PG envelope, and like the "Harry Potter" series, the Narnia stories may eventually tilt over into R. But it's remarkable, isn't it, that the Brits have produced Narnia, the Ring, Hogwarts, Gormenghast, James Bond, Alice and Pooh, and what have we produced for them in return? I was going to say "the cuckoo clock," but for that you would require a three-way Google of Italy, Switzerland and Harry Lime.

Moira Allen: Promoting Your Book on the Internet (writing-world.com)
If your book sales haven't been so great lately, you might want to take advantage of some of the promotional opportunities available on the Internet. The delightful thing about an Internet marketing campaign is that, if you already have a connection, in most cases it costs absolutely nothing -- except, of course, a little time.

I have read that the GOP religious segment think that this is an awful card,  as it does not mention 'Christmas', but only ' holiday season' and I hate to admit it, but I like the card.  Probably the only thing that Bush has done since he has been in the White House that I have liked!

Thanks, Adam!
I think the fabulous Jeff Crook took a bit o' satiric license with 'Doc O'Reilly's Christmas Gifts.com'.
However, you can purchase Baby Jesus Butt Plugs here or here (scent not mentioned).
OTOH, if you want something from O'Reilly's crass commercialization of Christmas enterprises, here's his 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle.
Sadly, he offers no falafel or loofahs.

Purple Gene Reviews

Stern's Visit To O'Really

Purple Gene's review of Howard Stern on the Bill O'Reilly FOX "No Spin Zone":

It was with seedy curiosity that I tuned in the King of " Knee-jerk jingoistic juvenile pseudo-journalism……Bill "the Pill" O'Reilly….because tonight he's having the self proclaimed "King of ALL Media", Howard Stern, on!

But first we had to listen to Mr. Bill's boring treatise about secularists killing Christmas and then his talking points about how the ACLU leadership are "Traitors". All the while he had Newt "kick my cancer ridden wife to the curb" Gingrich listening to him spout!

Then he had his "expert" political analyst on…….Dick "the big fat toe-sucking horses ass" Morris….expounding excrement through his paunchy pussy face. Oh and he still hates Bill and Hillary although he used to say they were the greatest!

Then a special report from the University of Connecticut……how the "far left liberal Nazi students" (that's a quote) shouted poor innocent Ann Coulter down from her pre-planned hate spewing speech with "You Suck - You Suck"….I've always loved articulate college students! (Ann got paid $16,000 for her little Q & A)

Finally….Howard comes on in his amber tinted glasses, riotous hair and black leather jacket….O'Reilly says "Who's your audience ?" Howard says "Strippers, Hookers and Crack Whores….Oh …and over 20 million extremely intelligent listeners (according to the Scarborough Report)". That's more than Bill O'Reilly will ever have. Stern tells B. O. that the secret to his success is being "Honest" with his audience. Then he proceeds to tell Mr. "No Spin" that it is disgraceful for him to be putting his name on Mugs and other trinkets just to sell his shit. When O'Reilly tries to give Stern one of his "O'Reilly" Jackets with an American Flag, Stern says "I'll give it to a Crack Whore" !

Stern finished O'Reilly off with a veiled slam at Bill's infamous fantasy phone sex calls with…."Listen Bill…I love Lesbians, don't you? There's nothing more beautiful in the world than 2 women making love!"

Purple Gene gives Howard Stern 10 tawdry and titillating topless transvestite teenagers out of 10 for having a bigger EGO than Bill O'Reilly …and a dirtier mind!

Cancels LA Times Subscription

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand has canceled her subscription to the Los Angeles Times over the firing of the paper's liberal columnist.

The newspaper dropped Robert Scheer and several other columnists last month; Scheer speculated he was let go because the Times had tired of his politics.

Perhaps the most liberal voice on the paper's opinion pages, Scheer had been a Times columnist for 12 years. He was a reporter for the newspaper for 17 years before that.

Streisand, a well-known supporter of Democratic candidates and liberal causes, wrote that by firing Scheer the Times had reduced the diversity of voices on its opinion pages. A shortened version of her letter was printed in the Times Nov. 23. The full letter is posted on her Web site

Grammarian Cuts University Speech Short

Ann Coulter

Conservative columnist Ann Coulter cut short a speech at the University of Connecticut amid boos and jeers, and decided to hold a question-and-answer session instead.

"I love to engage in repartee with people who are stupider than I am," Coulter told the crowd of 2,600 Wednesday.

Before cutting off her speech after about 15 minutes, Coulter called Bill Clinton an "executive buffoon" who won the presidency only because Ross Perot took 19 percent of the vote.

Decides Against Challenging $chwarzenegger

Rob Reiner

Actor-director Rob Reiner has decided against a run for California governor that could have pitted him against Arnold $chwarzenegger next year, an aide said on Wednesday night.

The New York-born Reiner, 58, director of films including "When Harry Met Sally..." and "This is Spinal Tap," and a co-star of the 1970s' hit TV series "All in the Family," has taken an increasingly high profile in California politics as the sponsor of a June 2006 ballot initiative to guarantee preschooling for 4-year-olds.

The California Republican Assembly, a conservative Republican group that recently expressed unhappiness with $chwarzenegger, has set up a Web site encouraging actor Mel Gibson to run.

Gets Year's Reprieve

CBGB

New York's punk rock music mecca CBGB reached an agreement with its landlords on Wednesday that allows the music club to stay at its East Village address for another year.

The agreement calls for CBGB to close its doors on the Bowery by October 31, 2006.

Owner Hilly Kristal, who in 1973 founded the joint whose initials stand for country, bluegrass and blues, said he was unhappy about losing the location but said the agreement gave him time to look at other possible sites in Times Square and downtown Manhattan.

Soprano Sax Sells for $140,000

Sidney Bechet

Jazz great Sidney Bechet's soprano saxophone sold at auction in Paris for more than $140,000.

The instrument, which Bechet used to compose many of his standards, inspired the highest bid among 32 pieces up for sale at the Hotel Drouot auction house on Wednesday. The total selling price, including fees, was $140,900, the auction house said.

Daniel Bechet, a drummer who lives in France, organized the auction to finance a foundation dedicated to his father's memory in the south of France. Born in New Orleans in 1897, the clarinet and saxophone player died in France in 1959.

Diaries Published In Finland

Jean Sibelius

The diaries of the late Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius between 1909 and 1944 were reportedly published for the first time, 140 years after his birth.

According to the FNB news agency, the diaries, which had previously only been seen by a handful of researchers, give an important insight into the private daily life of the composer who even during his lifetime came to embody Finland's identity.

The diaries, published by the Sibelius scholar Fabian Dahlstroem, also show that Sibelius was disappointed at being unable to find a single aristocrat among his forefathers.

Battle Over FBI Files Rages On

John Lennon

Twenty-five years after John Lennon was murdered, a court battle to release the last 10 pages of secret FBI files on the former Beatle still rages on, with no end in sight.

The FBI assembled about 300 pages of files on the singer-turned-activist in 1971 and 1972 as part of President Richard Nixon's effort to deport and silence Lennon as a critic of the Vietnam War, according to historian Jon Wiener, who has led the court battle to release the files.

"After years of litigation, the FBI has released all the pages except for 10, which it is withholding using a national security claim," said Wiener, a history professor at the University of California-Irvine.

Wiener and the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California first filed the Freedom of Information lawsuit in 1983 to gain access to the secret files on Lennon.

Incomplete Painting Fails To Sell

Titian

An incomplete painting by the Italian master Titian failed to sell at auction Thursday, despite bidding that reached $6.5 million US.

Bidding for Portrait of a Lady and Her Daughter was less than the minimum price placed on the work so the seller did not part with the painting, Christie's auction house said.

The Italian master began the painting - which is believed to show his daughter, Emilia, and one of his granddaughters - but never completed it, probably because he did not receive a commission.

Fisk University Painting To Be Sold

Georgia O'Keeffe

Fisk University plans to sell two paintings, including one by Georgia O'Keeffe, to fund new construction, endow teaching positions and improve security for the remaining paintings in its collection.

The O'Keeffe is her Radiator Building - Night, New York from 1927 and is the signature work of the entire 101-piece collection. The second work is modernist Marsden Hartley's Painting No. 3, a 1913 abstract oil on canvas.

A sale would, for the first time, break up the collection given to Fisk by O'Keeffe herself in 1949 as the Alfred Stieglitz Collection of Modern American and European Art. Besides paintings by O'Keeffe and photographs by Stieglitz, her husband, the collection includes works by Picasso, Cezanne, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Leaves Of Grass Anniversary

Walt Whitman

Devotees and scholars of the writer Walt Whitman are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the original edition of his seminal work, Leaves of Grass, the concise volume of 12 poems that pushed the boundaries of social decency and of poetry itself.

By rejecting the rigid structures of British metre, Whitman offered readers free-spirited bursts of consciousness that forever changed American poetry. But it is the later, voluminous version of the collection - running hundreds of pages - that is known to students across the U.S.

Across the U.S., celebrations of the anniversary have been as unpredictable as Whitman's poetry, from lectures and readings to a performance by the Brooklyn Philharmonic to guided meditations.
