The Crisis in Mumbai: Who Says Bush Is Not In Control?

The next President of the United States (boston.com)
In a vote of historic proportions yesterday, Senator Barack Obama became President-Elect of the United States of America with a 52% majority in the popular vote, and more than 349 electoral votes. Over two years of campaigning was resolved with a record voter turnout, as the Republican candidate John McCain conceded graciously at 11:20 pm eastern last night. With such a high level of interest and attention, there have been millions of words written and photographs taken of the candidates over the past year. Here is a collection of some of the best photos of President-Elect Barack Obama over the past several months.

The new Cicero (guardian.co.uk)
Charlotte Higgins says one of the most interesting aspects of Barack Obama's speeches is the enormous debt they owe to the oratory of the Romans.

David Sirota: The Tax History Conservatives Want Us to Forget (huffingtonpost.com)
As you'll see, the CNBC reporters start laughing at Norquist, having trouble taking him seriously. And I must say, I really wasn't sure he was being serious - but, of course, he was. I went on to make the point that I've often made in the past - the point that conservatives simply want everyone to forget: Namely, that President Clinton faced down a recession in 1993 by raising taxes on the wealthy in order to finance an economic stimulus package, and the economy subsequently boomed.

Garrison Keillor: Reducing costs 1 word at a time
I have bad news. Amid the worldwide economic meltdown we are experiencing these days, I have taken a hard look at revenue from this column and find that I am earning but a tiny fraction of the $6.5 million I had projected for 2008, which leaves me no choice but to impose aggressive cost reductions, including a 75 percent reduction in writing time and the elimination of editing. I apologize for the inconvenience. And I thank you for your patience

Richard Roeper: 'Bronx Mowgli'? Why not just 'Mom Hates Me'? (suntimes.com)
When I heard Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson named their newborn boy Bronx Mowgli, I figured "My Parents Are Goofballs" must have been taken.

CARLIN ROMANO: "Sex Addiction: Ooh! Aah! Eek! Ugh. Zzzz ... Ooh!" (chronicle.com)
Some people just like to do it again and again and again. Go to conferences, that is. Direct dissertations. Apply for jobs. Publish their latest thoughts, no matter how uncooked. And yes, that other thing - OK, make it those other things - that librarians might categorize under "Sex: Supernumerary."

Roger Scruton: You've read "Lucky Jim," now try drinking it (guardian.co.uk)
Kingsley Amis wrote three short books on drink, which are collected for the first time here. The first, On Drink, is a witty, belligerent and often profound defence of the kind of drinking habits that Kingsley acquired in the Old England of mixed drinks and beer. Its recipes are based on spirits, the repeated recourse to which enabled Kingsley to suffer fools if not gladly, then at least with a recognition that their defects are largely human.

Justin Paprocki: Guitarist for The Sword says metal band's name 'just looks good' (McClatchy Newspapers)
If your band performs songs with names like "Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians" and "How Heavy This Axe," you had better have a name that can back up their bombast.

Dan Deluca: Born singing? Almost, says rising star Jazmine Sullivan (The Philadelphia Inquirer)
Jazmine Sullivan has always been ahead of schedule. "I came out of the womb singing," says the powerful-voiced 21-year-old rising star. Sullivan currently has two hits from her debut album, "Fearless," on the Top 10 Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop song chart - her breakout single, "Need U Bad," and revenge song of the year, "Bust Your Windows."

Kevin C. Johnson: Jason Mraz steals a title for funny, funky CD (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
Singer-songwriter Jason Mraz's latest CD carries one of the most amusing titles: "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things."

MAM     wrote:
   The answer is B Ecuador

A Panama hat is a traditional brimmed hat of Ecuadorian origin that is made from the plaited leaves of the toquilla straw plant Straw hats woven in Ecuador, like many other 19th and early 20th century South American goods, were shipped first to the Isthmus of Panama before sailing for their destinations in Asia, the rest of the Americas, and Europe. For some products, the name of their point of international sale rather than their place of domestic origin stuck, hence "Panama hats.
My Grandfather. who was born in 1877, was very partial to Panama Hats. The picture is taken circa 1941 on the beach at Narragansett, RI. Both he and my Grandmother are wearing Panama Hats.

And, Joe S noted:
Hey, I know this one. My BW lived in Panama for several years and she filled me in on Panama hats many years ago. The correct answer is B: Ecuador.
Normally I would supply a cute little quote about Panama, or Ecuador, or maybe a cute little picture of a Panama hat, but I'm supplying a picture of a cute little picture of my BW Carla on a Panama beach 46 years ago. Much cuter than a hat.

We didn't have turkey for dinner today, we had ham. Although I love turkey and could probably eat it three times a day, Carla hates it. I don't know how I ever managed to marry that woman, let alone stay with her for 43 years. Oh, wait, I just looked at the picture. Now I remember how, it was pretty easy.
Actually, Carla's roasted many, many turkeys and I've eaten thousands and thousands of cold turkey sandwiches (correctly pronounced SAMitches).

Thanks to Charlie, Vic, Marianne, and Joe S for the pictures.

Interviewed Raul Castro

Sean Penn

Cuban President Raul Castro said in an interview released Wednesday that he would like to meet President-elect Barack Obama on "neutral ground" - and he suggested the American naval base at Guantanamo Bay.

The Cuban leader's offer came in a rare interview in Havana with actor-director Sean Penn, who wrote about it for the Dec. 15 edition of The Nation magazine. The article was released on the magazine's Web site Wednesday.

Penn asked if Castro would meet with Obama in Washington. The Cuban president said he "would have to think about it," but that it would not be fair for either leader to go to the other's territory. Instead he suggested the base at Guantanamo.

Raul Castro is largely seen as more pragmatic and conciliatory than his fiery older brother Fidel, and has offered to meet with U.S. officials several times since replacing his ailing sibling in mid-2006.

Hosts Dinner

Bill Richardson

Gov. Bill Richardson hosted a star-studded dinner party last weekend to thank moviemakers and celebrities, including George Clooney, Kevin Spacey and Paul Sorvino, for shooting films in the state.

Clooney and Spacey have been in New Mexico filming the action-comedy "The Men Who Stare at Goats." Sorvino has been working on "Doc West," a feature-length film for Italian television that is shooting around Santa Fe.

Other guests included Grant Heslov, director of "The Men Who Stare at Goats," and Mary McCormack, star of the Universal Network Television series "In Plain Sight," which is filming around Albuquerque.

The stars joined members of New Mexico's arts and business communities - including actress Ali MacGraw, a local resident - for a main course of grilled beef filet and Guinness cake for dessert.

Named To Canada's Perimeter Institute

Stephen Hawking

Famed physicist Stephen Hawking has been appointed to the position of distinguished research chair at Canada's leading scientific brain trust, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics announced Thursday.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based institute had been courting Hawking, best known for his book "A Brief History of Time," for several months, said local media.

The position will involve extended annual visits to the institute, the first in mid-2009, said Perimeter director Neil Turok.

The appointment will not, however, affect Hawking's position at Cambridge, where he heads the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology.

Set For His Metropolitan Opera Debut

Daniel Barenboim

Set to make his long-awaited Metropolitan Opera debut Friday night in Richard Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde," the 66-year-old Jewish former wunderkind, Daniel Barenboim, is known as much for his championing of Palestinian rights as he is for his work as a conductor and pianist.

So when he appeared at the Met for a round-table discussion on Nov. 18, talk quickly turned to Barack Obama's election as president and Barenboim's predictions of events in the Middle East.

Part of his reaction to Obama's election stems from his own experiences in the United States.

"I read with my own eyes at the entrance of a golf club in Miami in 1958 . . . a sign that said: "No Jews, no blacks and no dogs allowed." So there is quite a development in all that," he said.

France Returns Painting

Henri Matisse

France returned to its rightful owners on Thursday a painting by French master Henri Matisse which was seized by the Nazis in 1941 after its Jewish owner fled anti-Semitic persecutions in Germany.

The 1898 painting, "The Pink Wall," was one of thousands of paintings stolen from Jewish families during the Second World War that ended up in the custody of French authorities.

"To return this beautiful work by Matisse to its owners, the heirs of Mr Harry Fuld Jr, is an act of remembrance and reparation, at last," said Culture Minister Christine Albanel at a ceremony to hand over the painting.

The painting, which was one of 2,000 stolen works entrusted to French museums after World War Two, was recently on display in an exhibition of paintings whose owners had never been identified.

Media Study

Violence

Children who get heavy doses of media violence may be at greater risk of violent behavior as teenagers -- even when a range of other influences is considered, according to a new study.

"Even in conjunction with other factors, our research shows that media violence does enhance violent behavior," lead researcher Paul Boxer, of Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, said in a written statement.

"On average, adolescents who were not exposed to violent media are not as prone to violent behavior."

The findings, reported in an early online edition of the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, come from interviews with 820 teenagers and surveys of their parents and teachers. Just over half of the teens were recruited from Michigan high schools, while the rest were in juvenile detention centers. The subjects were evenly mixed in the number of males and females, and the number of minorities and non-minorities.

Concerned About US Climate Commitment

Europeans

Despite widespread optimism that President-elect Barack Obama will adopt policies more to their liking, some European officials are preparing to be disappointed on global warming.

European leaders have expressed hopes Obama would quickly break from the Bush administration and support a global agreement to limit greenhouse emissions blamed for global warming. But some are tempering their expectations that the United States can shift quickly enough to sign a deal by the end of next year.

Though Obama has supported the kind of limits on emissions envisioned by international negotiators and spurned byresident George W. Bush, it appears that Congress may not be ready to back him immediately.

The top European Union official in Washington, John Bruton, says there is growing concern that Congress could upend a global deal to succeed the Kyoto Protocol that they hope to sign at a meeting in Copenhagen at the end of 2009.

Japanese Zoo Mystery

Polar Bears

Puzzled Japanese zookeepers have cleared up a mystery over a lack of chemistry between a couple of polar bears as both turn out to be female, a Japanese zoo said Wednesday. Tsuyoshi, a four-year-old "male" polar bear, and his 11-year-old female partner, Kurumi, have been living together since June at the Kushiro Municipal Zoo in Hokkaido, northern Japan.

But much to the frustration and puzzlement of zookeepers, the bear couple, on a breeding mission, showed no signs of chemistry, and Tsuyoshi has never gone into rut even during "his" mating period.

"Observing his behaviors, we got suspicious as to whether Tsuyoshi was really a male," the zoo said in a statement.

The zoo put Tsuyoshi under an anesthetic earlier in the month for a gender checkup, and learned he was a she.

Document Fetches $177,000

Eleanor Rigby

A 97-year-old document that contains clues to the identity of Eleanor Rigby, the subject of one of the Beatles' best-loved songs, sold for 115,000 pounds ($177,000) at auction on Thursday.

The total fell well short of high estimates of around 500,000 pounds for the piece of Beatles memorabilia.

The money will go to the seller Annie Mawson and her charity the Sunbeams Music Trust , which uses music to help people with special needs.

The manuscript is a salary register from Liverpool City Hospital and features the name and signature of E. Rigby, a scullery maid who has signed for her monthly wage. Her annual earnings were 14 pounds.

In Memory

Ethel Bradley

Ethel Bradley, the wife of the late Los Angeles mayor, died today at a Southern California hospital. She was 89.

During her husband Tom's 20 years in office, Bradley co-founded the Black Women's Forum, a group of volunteers who provide public tours of City Hall, and organized the women's group Las Angelenas.

She was recognized by the city of Los Angeles last year with the Dream of Los Angeles Award during African American History Month.

Tom Bradley was mayor of Los Angeles from 1973 to 1993. He died in 1998.

Survivors include daughters Phyllis and Lorraine.

Welcome !

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.
Make yourself home, take your shoes off...
Go ahead, scratch it if it itches.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican musicians?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?
This is your place.

(In other words, submissions are welcome.)
