Throwback Thursday Trivia Question from Yesterday

What is the name of this feisty puppet?

       Madame                                                      Source

Wayland Parrott Flowers, Jr. (November 26, 1939 - October 11, 1988) was an American puppeteer. He was born and raised in Dawson, Georgia. Flowers was best known for the puppet act he created with his puppet Madame. His performances as "Wayland Flowers and Madame" were a major national success on stage and on screen in the 1970s and 1980s.

Madame was created by Flowers in the mid-1960s. Flowers' first big break was an appearance on the The Andy Williams Show. The character of Madame is an "outrageous old broad" who entertains with double entendres and witty comebacks. Bedecked in fabulous evening wear and "summer diamonds" ("Some are diamonds; some are not"), Madame's look is based on movie stars such as Gloria Swanson. Madame is rumored to be based on a Washington, DC gay icon, waitress and restaurant hostess Margo MacGregor.

Madame's many TV appearances included Laugh-In; a long run on the game show Hollywood Squares (replacing Paul Lynde in The Center Square); a recurring comedy skit on Solid Gold; a regular on ABC's short-lived summer replacement show called Keep on Truckin', TV guest spots; and as the star of her own syndicated 1982 sitcom, Madame's Place.        Source

   Madame! Madame was awesome.

Deborah, who is celebrating her birthday, replied:
I recognize that puppet but cannot remember its name. It's pretty hideous, I'll give it that.
Wait, is that Madame? Operated by Wayland Flowers? No wonder I didn't remember her earlier today; never was a fan.

Stephen F said:
   Madam

DJ Useo responded:
That wooden lady of hilarity is "Madame". Best of the last puppets when it comes to being funny.

Joe S     answered:
That's Madame a good friend of Waland Flowers, not my favorite ventriloquist. He was ok, just not my favorite. I practiced the art in my youth, and was pretty good, if I do say so myself. My all time favorite was Edgar Bergen. You could easily see his lips moving, but he was so good. I also liked Paul Winchell, I had a Jerry Mahoney dummy that I named, um, Jerry. I also really liked Senor Wences, a lot.

Hey Marty, Well, thank goodness the last debate is over. They were excruciating to watch. It doesn't look like Trump was able to steer his flaming train wreck of a campaign back on track. It looks like he might go full asshole mode & refuse to concede if he loses. We'll see, I guess.

Anyway, here is another graphic I thought of while laying in bed one night. Other people have used the phrase, but I wanted to add Donald's tiny little groping hands & make it look like an official campaign banner.

ABC Comedy From Amy Poehler

Carol Burnett

Carol Burnett is returning to the small screen.

The comedic legend is set to star in an untitled multicamera comedy from executive producer Amy Poehler, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The project, which hails from Universal Television, centers on a family who gets the chance to buy the house of their dreams - one that they could never afford - on the condition that they live with the current owner, an older actress (Burnett), until she dies.

Michael Saltzman, who grew up idolizing Burnett, will pen the script for the comedy that landed at ABC in a competitive situation. The network has handed out a hefty put-pilot commitment for the project.

Poehler will executive produce the comedy via her Universal TV-based Paper Kite banner. Other exec producers include Brooke Posch, Dave Becky and Michael Pelmont.

"Turing's Law"

UK

Britain is to pardon thousands of gay and bisexual men who were convicted of crimes under sexual offense laws which have now been abolished, following on from the 2013 exoneration of celebrated World War Two codebreaker Alan Turing.

Homosexual acts were not decriminalized in England until 1967 and it was not until 2001 that the age of consent for homosexuals was reduced to 16, bringing it into line with the law governing heterosexuals.

Lord John Sharkey, who has been pushing the government to issue pardons, said some 65,000 men had been convicted under the now-repealed laws, of which 15,000 were still alive.

The government said anyone who had been found guilty of consensual homosexual sex would have their names cleared, and for those still living, the offences would be removed from any criminal record checks via a "disregard process".

The pardon plan has been dubbed "Turing's Law" in reference to the brilliant wartime mathematician who cracked Nazi Germany's "unbreakable" Enigma code.

Pink Slips Snoopy

MetLife

Snoopy has been handed the pink slip.

After 31 years (217 dog years) as the face of insurance giant MetLife Inc., the company said Thursday that it is launching a new global branding effort, marking the end of a long relationship with Charlie Brown's beagle and the Peanuts crew.

"We brought in Snoopy over 30 years ago to make our company more friendly and approachable during a time when insurance companies were seen as cold and distant," said Esther Lee, MetLife's global chief marketing officer. "Snoopy helped drive our business and served an important role at the time."

But MetLife is spinning off its domestic retail life insurance business to focus more on corporate clients. Snoopy does not appear to hold the same marketing swagger with corporate America.

Workers continue construction of a reed boat named the "Viracocha III," and built by Bolivian Aymara Indians, in La Paz, Bolivia, Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016. American explorer Phil Buck is preparing to cross the Pacific Ocean from South America to Australia in the Viracocha III, a three-masted boat that was made from several tons of dried reeds of the totora plant. The expedition seeks to prove that ancient mariners could have made such journeys across huge ocean expanses in reed ships, and that such vessels could have been a factor in human migration.

New Map

Milky Way

A new super-detailed hydrogen map of the Milky Way could help explain the mystery of how galaxies form, Australian and German scientists behind the project said Thursday.

The decade-long HI4PI project, which used the world's largest steerable radio telescopes, provides an in-depth view of all the hydrogen gas in and around the galaxy that contains our solar system.

"We've basically put together a very complex map of hydrogen gases associated with our own Milky Way," Australian team leader Naomi McClure-Griffiths, a professor from the Australian National University, told AFP.

"Hydrogen is the most basic element, it's what everything is made from, and what we have achieved will help us understand better how galaxies form."

The study used telescopes in Parkes, Australia and Effelsberg, Germany to map neutral hydrogen, the most abundant element in space and the main component of stars and galaxies.

Telescope Faces New Hearing

Hawaii

A $1.4 billion project to build one of the world's largest telescopes is up against intense protests by Native Hawaiians and others who say building it on the Big Island's Mauna Kea mountain will desecrate sacred land.

Hearings for the project's construction permit are set to begin Thursday and expected to last until next month. It's the second time the project has faced the proceedings.

This time, numerous parties are participating, including a group of Native Hawaiians who support the telescope, and dozens of witnesses are expected to testify. It's not clear when the retired judge overseeing the hearings would issue a ruling.

A group of universities in California and Canada plan to build the telescope with partners from China, India and Japan. Its primary mirror will measure 30 meters in diameter and be made up of 492 individual segments. Compared with the largest existing visible-light telescope in the world, it will be three times as wide, with nine times more area.

Scientists say the telescope would allow them to see into the earliest years of the universe. The telescope could find planets around other stars in the "habitable zone," where liquid water is possible on a planet's surface, the project's website says. The 13 telescopes already on Mauna Kea have played major roles in discoveries considered among the most significant to astronomy. Partners would receive a share of observing time, along with University of Hawaii scientists.

Report Card Paints Bleak Picture

Great Barrier Reef

Australia on Thursday admitted more needs to be done to protect the Great Barrier Reef from pollution after a government-backed report painted a bleak picture of the natural wonder.

The giant ecosystem is under pressure from farming run-off, development, the coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish and the impacts of climate change, which saw mass a bleaching event this year that killed swathes of coral.

Canberra insists it is doing more than ever before to protect the reef, but its annual report into water quality, seagrass and coral gave it a "D" -- which represents "poor" -- for the fifth year in a row.

The reef receives run-off from 35 major catchments in an area larger than Japan, with sediment in the water reducing the light available to seagrass ecosystems and coral reefs, affecting coral settlement, growth and reproduction.

This ultimately hinders the reef's ability to recover from the impacts of climate change such as bleaching and more intense extreme weather events.

Palestinian visitors look at a large Mosaic at Hisham's Palace in the West Bank city of Jericho, Oct. 20, 2016. A large mosaic covers an area of 827 square meters, divided into 38 rugs, this is considered the largest mosaic saved in the world. The mosaic was buried in sand and insulating materials for many years to protect it from climatic effects and was open for the public by the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for one day. The Hisham's Palace is located north of Jericho on the Jordan valley, archaeologists think that the site was built by Chliph Hisham bin Abd el-Malik (r.724 to 743 AD) and decorated by his heir between 743-744 AD, which date back to the period of the Umayyad.

NBCUniversal Doubles Bet

BuzzFeed

NBCU is finalizing an investment of another $200 million into BuzzFeed, at a valuation of about $1.7 billion, according to Recode's Peter Kafka, who cites sources. That would bring NBCU's total investment in BuzzFeed to $400 million.

A $1.7 billion valuation is slightly raised from last year, when NBCU invested its first $200 million in BuzzFeed at a valuation of $1.5 billion (post-money).

This investment continues a trend of traditional TV giants investing in digital upstarts. Besides BuzzFeed, NBCU has invested $200 million in Vox. Vice has $400 million from Disney, Thrillist's new holding company secured $100 million from Discovery just last week, and Refinery29 snagged $45 million from Turner this summer.

This summer, BuzzFeed split into two pieces: news and entertainment, which is mostly video-focused. Video is where the major growth at BuzzFeed is, according to The New York Times, which said it would generate half of the company's revenue in 2016, but balloon to 75% over the next two years. BuzzFeed founder and CEO Jonah Peretti even moved to LA in January, where the entertainment piece of the company is based.

A 174-tonne piece of jade worth millions of dollars that was uncovered in Myanmar Burma will have to stay where it is for now -- because its owners don't have equipment strong enough to move it.

The 5.8 metre-long (19 feet) stone was discovered by miners in northern Kachin state last week, buried up to 60 metres deep inside a mountain.

"When the edge of the stone was scratched we could see the quality of the jade inside -- the quality is very good," said Tint Soe, 56, a local lawmaker.

While some have estimated the rock could be worth more than $170 million, Tint Soe said its value was probably closer to $5.4 million.

Myanmar is the source of nearly all of the world's finest jadeite, a beautiful green stone highly prized in neighbouring China where it is known as the "stone of heaven".

Breaks World Record For Nuclear Fusion

MIT

Scientists working at MIT's Alcator C-Mod experimental fusion reactor have broken the world record for fusion pressure. This achievement came on the day the reactor was scheduled to be shut down.

Nuclear fusion power has long been sought as an alternative to current energy sources, but the extreme conditions required for it to work have made efficient fusion power impossible to obtain. Fusion reactions are the power source that fuels the Sun, and the only way fusion power can reliably work is in high-pressure and high-temperature environments like the Sun's core. MIT's Alcator C-Mod experiment was an attempt to create those conditions in a laboratory.

Recently, the experiment succeeded, generating two atmospheres of plasma pressure. This pressure brought the plasma to a temperature of 35 million degrees Celsius, close to the threshold of 50 million needed for commercial fusion power.

MIT's reactor has been performing fusion experiments for more than 23 years, but due to budget cuts it was shut down a few weeks ago, on September 23.
