Tackles Nuclear Disarmament

Michael Douglas

He's played a president on the big screen, so putting on a political hat again was a natural role for Michael Douglas, who testified Thursday on Capital Hill about nuclear disarmament and increased international cooperation by the United States.

"Regarding the reconstruction of Iraq, it has become clear that there is no substitute for U.N. cooperation for legitimacy and effectiveness," Douglas said at a panel discussion arranged by two House members.

"The American President" star, who is one of the United Nations messengers of peace, recently filmed a documentary on children soldiers in Sierra Leone. He said his message to resident Bush would be to support the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Received Woody Guthrie Award

John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp says there is too little politics in music these days and is doing something about it, a point of activist pride that would bring a smile to the lips of one his musical heroes -- Woody Guthrie.

The memory of the legendary folk singer is bringing a smile to the Indiana rocker, who is being honored on Thursday with the Woody Guthrie Award by the Huntington's Disease Society of America.

Mellencamp, who turns 52 next week, bemoaned the disappearance of activism from much of the modern music scene. "It's not encouraged. Dissent and rebellion is what rock'n'roll was founded on. The record companies back then encouraged it, wanted it, publicized it. But now they don't want no trouble."

Wins 2003 Nobel Literature Prize

J.M. Coetzee

South African novelist J.M. Coetzee won the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday, a choice hailed by critics who described him as an elusive man but accessible writer, both literary and politically engaged.

A white South African raised in an English-speaking home and writing in English despite his Afrikaans background, he portrays a desolate vision of his racially divided country with a lean, allegorical style compared with Franz Kafka and Samuel Beckett.

The Swedish Academy, announcing the prize, said Coetzee was "ruthless in his criticism of the cruel rationalism and cosmetic morality of Western civilization."

Despite critical acclaim -- he was the first author to win the Booker Prize twice, in 1983 with "The Life and Times of Michael K" and in 1999 for "Disgrace" -- the 63-year-old writer shuns the spotlight and did not turn up for the Booker awards.

Coetzee, who lives in Australia but spends part of the year teaching in Chicago, appeared taken aback by news he had won the 10 million crown ($1.3 million) Nobel prize.

Winery to Feature Artwork

Jerry Garcia

The Clos du Bois winery is launching J. Garcia wines, which feature Garcia's artwork on its labels. Garcia's abstract creations have already graced T-shirts and neckties.

The initial release consists of 50,000 cases of 2002 Sonoma County chardonnay, 2000 Sonoma County merlot and 2000 Sonoma County cabernet sauvignon. A zinfandel is due out later this year.

Garcia, who died of a heart attack in 1995, attended high school near this Sonoma County town, located about 90 miles north of San Francisco. Members of his estate, who say Garcia enjoyed drinking Clos du Bois wine, approached the winery about putting Garcia's artwork on its bottles.

The production will come from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, one of seven companies visiting over 100 small and middle-sized cities in all 50 states as part of a 15-month NEA project called "Shakespeare in American Communities" which opened Sept. 20 in New London, Conn.

Baby News

Kristi Yamaguchi

It's a girl for Olympic champion figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi and her husband, Bret Hedican, a defenseman for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The couple's first child, Keara Kiyomi Hedican, was born early Wednesday at a Raleigh, N.C., hospital, Yamaguchi's Los Angeles publicist said. The baby weighed 7 pounds and was 20 inches long.

Yamaguchi, 32, retired from the Stars on Ice tour last year to begin a family with Hedican, 33. The couple met at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France, where she won a gold medal and he played for the U.S. hockey team. They married three years ago.

Cited for Trespassing

Steve Kroft

CBS correspondent Steve Kroft was among three newspeople ticketed for trespassing at a chemical plant last week, a plant official said Wednesday.

Arrested with Kroft, an investigative reporter for the CBS news magazine "60 Minutes," were a Pittsburgh newspaper reporter and a freelance video cameraman.

Jack Ferguson, vice president of manufacturing for Neville Chemical, confirmed the citations, which were first reported Wednesday by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Neville makes resins used in inks, paints, plastics and other products.

The trio were stopped Sept. 22 when they were spotted by plant officials, who called police, Ferguson said. The plant is located on Neville Island, just west of Pittsburgh on the Monongahela River.

Paris Pantheon Time?

George Sand

The granddaughter of France's 19th century novelist and feminist George Sand said President Jacques Chirac was opposing her request that a symbolic tomb to her renowned relative be installed in the Pantheon, the Paris monument to famous French figures.

She, the mayors of three towns in central France where George Sand spent much of her life, and the actress Claudia Cardinale have been lobbying to have a cenotaph, or empty memorial tomb, erected in the Pantheon.

The imposing, classically styled building houses the remains of several legendary Frenchmen -- among them writers Voltaire, Victor Hugo and Emile Zola -- but just one woman: Marie Curie.

Born in Paris in 1804, she was raised by her grandmother, married a baron and started a family. But, bored with her lot, she soon left them to start her career writing for Le Figaro and magazines before turning to books, which won her the attention of several famous men who soon became her lovers, among them the poet Alfred de Musset and the composer Frederic Chopin.

'Xena,' 'Hercules' Actors Sue

Universal

"Xena: Warrior Princess" star Lucy Lawless and "Hercules" star Kevin Sorbo filed separate breach-of-contract lawsuits Tuesday accusing the company of denying them money from the adjusted gross receipts of their syndicated shows. The two are represented by the same attorney, who filed the suits at the same time.

Sorbo and Lawless said they had agreements with Universal entitling them to a percentage of the receipts, but that Universal has improperly reduced the receipts and increased distribution expenses and production costs to deny them the money.

Lawless said she was entitled to 5 percent, and Sorbo said he was entitled to 8 percent.

Motley Crue Bassist Sues Vans

Nikki Sixx

Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx sued a skateboarding magazine and the Vans shoe company for allegedly using his image in an ad without his permission.

Sixx, whose real name is Franklin C. Feranna, said in the lawsuit filed Tuesday that the defendants used photographs of him with pro skater Tony Trujillo at a San Francisco ceremony organized by Thrasher magazine and sponsored by Vans.

Sixx said he agreed to present Trujillo with a "Skater of the Year" award at the ceremony on Dec. 7, 2002, because he knew Trujillo was a Motley Crue fan.

The musician said he was surprised to see photos taken at the ceremony in an ad for Trujillo's signature Vans shoes. The photo also showed a marquee with the words "Thrasher Magazine's Skater of the Year Tony Trujillo."

Settled

Hemingway Family Feud

Eight grandchildren of Ernest Hemingway have settled a bitter feud with the widow of the writer's transsexual son Gregory over his $7-million estate, which included a portion of Hemingway's literary rights, one of the children said on Thursday.

The death of Gregory Hemingway two years ago, of cardiovascular disease on the floor of a cell in the women's annex of the Dade County Jail, put a Miami judge on the verge of a potentially precedent-setting decision on whether the author's troubled son was a man or a woman.

Details of the settlement were confidential, said Lorian Hemingway, one of the eight children and a successful author.

$357,500 Fine

'Opie & Anthony Show'

A radio contest challenging listeners to have sex in public places for a free trip to Boston's Sam Adams Brewery has won the broadcasters a $357,500 fine, federal regulators said on Thursday.

The Federal Communications Commission proposed the fine after ruling that 13 stations owned by a Viacom Inc. unit violated federal indecency standards when they aired, on Aug. 15, 2002, the "Opie & Anthony Show," which ran the contest.

The show was canceled almost immediately after the contest aired, which included broadcasts of five couples purportedly having sex and descriptions of other sexually explicit activities in famous New York locales like St. Patrick's Cathedral and Rockefeller Center.

Infinity Broadcasting, the Viacom unit that runs the radio stations, told the FCC that the "Sex for Sam" program was unacceptable and contrary to its own programing standards but that the aired material was not obscene and did not fall within the agency's indecency definition.

Hate Radio - Part 1

John Dennis

The co-host of a popular sports show has apologized for on-air comments comparing a zoo's escaped gorilla to inner-city students who use a voluntary busing program known as Metco.

John Dennis made the remark Monday on WEEI-AM after seeing a newspaper photograph of the gorilla standing by a bus stop, saying the animal was "probably a Metco gorilla waiting for a bus."

The state-run busing program lets minority children from the inner-city attend schools in nearby suburbs.

Neither Dennis nor WEEI officials immediately returned calls for comment. Station program director Jason Wolfe told The Boston Globe that Dennis and the station had apologized to schools and Metco officials and that the station was offering to air public-service spots for Metco.

Hate Radio - Part 2

Bob Lonsberry

Radio talk-show host Bob Lonsberry had apologized Thursday and agreed to undergo diversity training and remain off the air indefinitely. But he lost his job after attacking critics in a Web column Monday, saying the "liberal and afraid ... seek to dominate society through threat and intimidation."

WHAM radio said in a statement Monday that "although Mr. Lonsberry expressed a willingness to change, it became obvious to us that he is not embracing diversity."

Last month, Lonsberry joked with listeners about an orangutan that briefly escaped a zoo, then commented that the animal was now running for county executive. He made a similar reference again last week as monkey sounds were aired in the background.

Lonsberry worked nine years at WHAM, which is owned by Clear Channel Communications of San Antonio, Texas.

Space Station Chief Says

No New Weddings

The current international space station crew marked the first wedding from orbit. But the U.S. commander of the replacement team said Wednesday that no one on his watch will tie — or untie — the knot.

Foale's mission is scheduled to launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Oct. 18. His team includes Russian cosmonaut Alexander Kaleri, who will command the Soyuz spaceship on the voyage to the station, and European Space Agency astronaut Pedro Duque of Spain. All three men are married with children.

In August, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko caused a stir when he married Texas resident Ekaterina Dmitriev as he orbited 240 miles above Earth. The ceremony was held in Texas, which allows weddings in which one of the parties is not present.

Found in Connecticut

Mysterious Frog Eggs

Hurricane Isabel brought unholy high winds and lashing rain to the East Coast. It also dumped something almost biblical on Connecticut.

Primo D'Agata was startled by what he thought was hail smacking on his porch Sept. 19 as the remnants of Isabel moved through the state. But when he went outside to investigate, D'Agata discovered tiny, gelatinous eggs with dark spots in the middle.

Nicolas Diaz, a naturalist and teacher at New Britain Youth Museum at Hungerford Park, took a look at D'Agata's bowl and told him it looked like amphibian eggs.

D'Agata is keeping two small, water-filled glass jars of the eggs to see if any of them will hatch. He said a few seem to have sprouted what look like a tail.
