Reader Review - Mr. Hawk

The Prisoner and Others

Where am I?
In the Village

This week's episode is the Chimes Of Big Ben. A new Number 2 (Leo McKern) has arrived and is encouraging Number 6 to get friendly with everyone else. As they chat they watch a new arrival wake up. 6 is too good an agent to fall for the beautiful lady, but he thinks there just may be a way to escape. The plot moves well and there are more twists in it than there are Bushes stealing from the goverment.

Floating around out there is an alternative copy of this episode, but having a copy, I have to say I don't see much difference.

And I have to award myself a big kick in the behind as I didn't catch that BBC America is showing The Young Ones now on Thursday night.

Last week you reminded me that The Avengers are also on. Well I've done a little digging and found out all they are going to run are the color episodes. While still enjoyable this is about the time the plots started to get a little silly. This week's episode is so unremarkable I can't even remember it. The next 2 weeks though are pretty good.

Well I'm off to see Kerry speak. At least I know I won't get arrested there.

Re: Marriage

Following the U.S. Senate defeat of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, a California man seeks to prevent matrimony between men and women. Speaking from his Petaluma office, architect David Nussbaum said, "I want a constitutional amendment to ban heterosexual marriage. I had 17 years of the institution and it was hellish."

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Sunny, with a heaping helping of humidity.

Yesterday at the Orange County Fair we came across the Dems booth. Wonderful couple behind the table, but not much in the way of stuff to hand-out. No stickers, no buttons, no bumperstickers. OTOH, the Repubs offered coloring books of Ahnold or the Chimp, bumperstickers, buttons, pins, and a selection of yard signs - everything from 'Bush/Cheney' to 'Thank You Ronald Reagan.'

I'm currently admiring the Raygun sign & deciding on its future usage.

Also came across a flying pig, so had to buy one.

A little pink plastic pig with white wings that flap (runs on 4 AA batteries), it's made to be hung from the ceiling & fly in a circle.

Freedom Awards

John Lewis

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., and entertainer Bono were named recipients Thursday of the National Civil Rights Museum's annual Freedom Awards.

The museum on the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s murder gives two Freedom Awards annually to recipients who have worked to advance civil rights.

Lewis will receive the museum's "national award" at a banquet in Memphis on Oct. 18. At that ceremony, rock 'n' roll performer Bono will get the museum's "international award."

Canada OKs Airing Broadcasts

Al-Jazeera

Canadian broadcast regulators have cleared the Arabic Al-Jazeera television network for viewing by Canadians via cable and satellite.

But in a decision released Thursday, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission set stringent rules designed to keep anti-Semitic or other abusive comments off the air.

The application by Canadian TV distributors to carry Al-Jazeera - often called the CNN of the Arabic world - had generated intense controversy.

Charles Dalfen, chairman of the CRTC, acknowledged in an interview that Al-Jazeera has broadcast objectionable material. Some of the remarks cited at commission hearings clearly held Jews up to "hatred and contempt on the basis of religion," said Dalfen.

On the other hand, he said, Al-Jazeera met the test of being a credible news service, and the commission had a legal duty not to unduly infringe freedom of expression.

The conclusion was that "we couldn't absolutely ban it," said Dalfen.

Winning Streak Propels Ratings

'Jeopardy'

"Jeopardy!" is reaping the ratings rewards of a record-setting winning streak by contestant Ken Jennings.

The veteran quiz show has seen its ratings skyrocket since Jennings' first appearance on June 2. On Tuesday, the episode that saw Jennings pass the $1 million mark delivered an 11.1 rating/21 share in Nielsen Media Research's top 56 "metered" markets.

That rating is up 25% over the 8.9/17 average that "Jeopardy!" posted in the metered markets during the week of June 28, when Jennings was already well into his winning streak. It's also up 41% from the 7.9 average household rating the show logged on a national basis for the week ending July 4, the most recent week for which national figures are available. With that 7.9 rating, the show was up 5% week-to-week and up 36% compared with the same period a year ago.

Brings News to Theaters

'Fahrenheit 9/11'

Time was, you had to go to the movies to see the news. Then came television, which brought newsreels right into your home.

Now, in this election year a half-century later, people in huge numbers have found that getting news about the war in Iraq and the politics behind it makes a trip to the multiplex well worth the bother.

Who could have forecast such a relapse?

For starters: the video footage of recuperating U.S. soldiers, Iraqi casualties, resident Bush in that classroom paralyzed for seven minutes after learning of the terrorist attacks. This is video you have likely seen nowhere else, and you emerge from the theater wondering, "Why the heck not?"

Theater Owner Invites GOP to 'Fahrenheit 9/11'

Eric Faden

Theater operator Eric Faden has had a hard time persuading Republicans to see "Fahrenheit 9/11." So he's inviting them to a special showing.

What's more, he'll even buy tickets for any card-carrying Republicans who come to see Michael Moore's assault on resident Bush's actions regarding the Sept. 11 attacks.

"Hopefully, some people will come out," said Faden, executive director of the nonprofit Campus Theatre in downtown Lewisburg (Pa) and an assistant professor of film studies at Bucknell University. "That is the sincere intent of this."

Faden heard liberal patrons praising the film, but when he sought the opinions of his conservative friends, he found most hadn't seen it, often because they didn't want to support Moore financially. That's why he's willing to ante up.

Tony Randall

Tony Randall, the Emmy Award-winning actor who died two months ago, left more than $1 million to his wife and two children, according to his will, which was filed for probate in New York's Surrogate Court.

Randall was 84 when he died in his sleep on May 17 from "complications from a prolonged illness." He left his entire estate to his wife, Heather, and their two children, Julia, aged 7, and Jefferson, aged 5.

The will, filed for probate on July 8, was made public on Wednesday. In the document, the actor also bequeathed $50,000 each to the Actors Fund and The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater, both in Manhattan.

The CD, not scheduled for release until this Fall, vanished Tuesday while the band was in a studio outside the Riviera city of Nice having pictures taken for the album cover.

About 20 people who were present during the photo shoot were questioned by police, who said it was still unclear if the CD's disappearance was accidental or theft.

New Oscar Rules

Academy Awards

The Academy Awards have some new rules, including a ban on ads by studios trashing the competition.

In a decree released Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences formally banned studios from referencing rivals in ads aimed at voters.

The new rule "prohibits specific and disparaging references to other pictures or individuals competing in a given category in ads, mailings, Web sites or other forms of campaign communication," according to the Academy.

Another new rule: some Oscar voters outside of Los Angeles and New York have complained that they have trouble seeing all the movies necessary for an informed ballot - so the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has authorized studios to send free coupons to them.

L.A. Court to Sentence in Absentia

Courtney Love

Rock star Courtney Love, hospitalized in New York after one of the more turbulent weeks in her troubled life, will not have to appear in a Los Angeles court on Friday for sentencing in one of the five cases pending against her, her lawyer said.

Michael Rosenstein told reporters on Thursday that Love was "receiving treatment and doing well." Love was carried handcuffed on a stretcher from her Manhattan apartment last Friday hours after a Los Angeles judge issued an arrest warrant over her failure to appear on an assault charge.

Love, 40, was initially admitted for an unspecified emergency gynecological condition, and later admitted to a different hospital. The nature of her treatment has not been revealed but media speculation has ranged from a miscarriage to an abortion, drug overdose and psychological breakdown.

It said he was arrested and handcuffed at around 3:00 am, and taken to a police cell where he spent the rest of the night before being released on bail.

John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck's surviving blood heirs are suing the estate of his third wife, Elaine Steinbeck, alleging a "30-year hidden conspiracy" to cheat them of royalties and copyright control and detailing a bitter family feud worthy of a Steinbeck novel.

The late writer's son, Thomas Steinbeck, and granddaughter, Blake Smyle, filed suit Thursday in the U.S. District Court in New York, seeking greater ownership of "The Grapes of Wrath" and other Steinbeck classics and monetary damages of at least $18 million.

Defendants include McIntosh & Otis, Inc., a literary agency that handles John Steinbeck's literary estate; two sisters of Elaine Steinbeck; Elaine Steinbeck's daughter from a previous marriage, Waverly Scott Kaffaga; and four grandchildren.

Handwritten Score Discovered

Jacques Offenbach

A handwritten, original score that may hold the key to Jacques Offenbach's true intentions for his final and greatest opera, "The Tales of Hoffmann," has been discovered in the Paris National Opera archives, the organization said Thursday.

The manuscript - once thought to have been destroyed in a fire - was found during a reorganization of the opera library. It provides essential and complete information on "Tales of Hoffmann" as it was first performed for the public in 1881.

The newly discovered score - which contains corrections written by the composer and others after his death - further helps fill in the blanks.

Hearth in Sierra Nevada

Donner Party

Archeologists have unearthed a cooking hearth in the Sierra Nevada where they believe the Donner party gathered for meagre meals in the mid-1800s months before starvation led to the country's most famous tale of cannibalism.

Government and university researchers said Wednesday that bone fragments they located appear to be large enough to allow for DNA testing to determine if they are human. They also found lead shot, musket balls, jewelry beads and wagon parts.

If some of the bones are human, they would be the first physical evidence to back up survivors' accounts that some members of the Donner party resorted to cannibalism to survive being trapped in snow during the winter of 1846-47.

Portable Toilet Explosion

Smoker

Warning: smoking in the toilet can be dangerous. A portable toilet exploded Tuesday after a man who was inside it lit a cigarette.

Emergency workers said the man was not severely injured and drove himself to Clay-Battelle Community Health Center. He was later transferred to Ruby Memorial Hospital. His name and condition were not available Wednesday.

The explosion, which occurred in Blacksville (W.Va), resulted from a buildup of methane gas inside the portable toilet. The methane did not "take too kindly" to the lit cigarette, said a spokeswoman for Monongalia Emergency Medical Services.

Psilly Pstory

A Delaware college student ate a bag of hallucinogenic mushrooms and drove around in a pair of stolen cars before arriving, confused, on a mountain in northwest Connecticut police said.

Police said Paul Cunningham, 21, of Dover, Del., confessed that eating an entire bag of mushrooms, "probably wasn't a good idea." He allegedly told investigators that he had no idea how many laws he broke during a three-day excursion that took him 300 miles from home.

A student at Wilmington College, he told a state trooper that he bought the drugs in Dover on Monday, according to the Republican-American of Waterbury. The next day, he went for a drive and twice got lost in Connecticut.

In Memory

Arthur Kane

New York Dolls bassist Arthur Kane died Tuesday night in Los Angeles due to complications from leukemia, the pioneering '70s glam rock group's manager told Billboard.com. Kane was 55.

The reunited Dolls were fresh off a well-received appearance at Morrissey's Meltdown Festival in London last month and had also opened some of Morrissey's concerts in May in New York. It is unclear if the David Johansen-led group will still perform next month at Little Steven's International Underground Garage Festival in New York.

The Dolls are scheduled to release an album for Morrissey's Attack imprint in September, but no details have been revealed. Johansen is understood to be in Paris and is preparing a statement on the group's future.

Kane is the fourth member of the Dolls to pass away, including guitarist Johnny Thunders, who died of a drug overdose in 1991.
