Astro Forecast for Sagittarius for 5/16 - 6/21

CELESTIAL SASS!

By Gare Galbraith

SAGITTARIUS
11/22 - 12/21 Oy Vey! Aye yi yi! Momma Mia! After your shitlike Monday and Tuesday this week, you probably thought that easy times were coasting your way. Sorry. This is not to bear you bad news but to help you avoid even bigger dilemas. Entering the Mercury Retro period (see Overall Prediction posting) as we did yesterday, is challenging enough. But at 12:29am 5/21, we become under the influence of the Gemini Sun, which is your most frustrating time of year. So, please delay initiating big projects, battles, relationships, medical procedures or oft-dreamt journeys til after 6/20 if you can stand it. You are usually the most optimistic of signs. You have more to look forward to later in the summer. The Full Moon of 5/26 & 5/27 weighs upon you heavily. Lighthearted gatherings turn to blistering social seethings and vice-versa. Your worst days of the year to try to get your way will be 6/9 thru 1:18pm 6/11. Call upon your humongous philosophical bent and get out of the way of any Gemini with too many good ideas. Tho it doesn't fall in the forecast period, 6/22 and 6/23 will be quite fortuitous for you (just wanted to give you something to look forward to).

1st Decan Sag 11/22 - 12/1 Read, reread and heed the above paragraph. Realize that when we're in the 6 month opposite period from your birthday is the most challenging.... Maybe that's why Sags just hate graduation time (the world is your classroom anyway). The above oft-mentioned Mercury Retro takes place directly opposite you as well. Issues of partnership, legalities, fairness and content-over-form spring at you from nowhere. Sabbaticalize this period if you are able. Scour your writings and thoughts and edit for presentation when we get to Leo time.

2nd Decan Sag 12/2 - 12/11 You are flummoxed by miscommunications involving work, dependability and/or diet....unless you triple check all info pertaining to such. Since March you've been learning some difficult partnership lessons... or at least i hope you have, because we don't want you making the same mistakes when you're 88. Realize, tho, that some of the rantings of "That's not fair!" are coming from those who only consider what's fair to them. After 6/8, your animal charisma really picks up.

3rd Decan Sag 12/12 - 12/21 (that's fun to type) Allow what you feel as partner/legal/appearance issues from 6/11 - 6/12 prepare you for the life lessons you are gonna have to deal with concerning these issues for the rest of the year. Ask some of your earlier born (day, not year) Sag brothers what's been walloping them here concerning such in the last year. At least you'll have some info. But, if i know my Sag friends, you have to learn from experience.

To Crash Jubilee Summer

Sex Pistols

A quarter-century after they shot to infamy with the scathing anti-royal song "God Save the Queen," the Sex Pistols are reuniting in the summer of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee.

The punk band will perform July 27 at London's Crystal Palace sports center, singer John Lydon said Thursday.

The 76-year-old monarch is marking 50 years on the throne with a series of public events around the country, including a pop concert in the grounds of Buckingham Palace on June 4. The Sex Pistols have not been invited.

Lydon — formerly known as Johnny Rotten — gave details of the band's concert and offered his take on the role of the monarchy during an expletive-filled press conference in London.

"Let me remind you what being British is all about," he said. "This is our country, this is our flag, they're our monarchy, they don't work too well at the moment but let's make the (expletive) do a good job. Let's get rid of the useless ones and keep a few of the goodies."

"God Save the Queen" will be rereleased May 27 in the hope it will top the charts when Queen Elizabeth II celebrates 50 years on the throne during the first weekend in June.

Razorback Fan Mistaken For Ozzy?

Osbourne, Not Osborne

Not that he's angry, but a businessman says he would like to stop being confused with an aging heavy metal star who bites bats.

Web-surfing fans of Ozzy Osbourne's popular TV show have lately been leaving hundreds of messages on Jennings Osborne's personal Web site.

"The messages start off 'Hey dude, love ya,'" Osborne said Wednesday. "I get very few messages that start off with 'Hey dude.'"

Osborne site manager David Bazzel thinks fans search for "Osborne" and click on Jennings' site without thinking, even though the names are spelled differently.

Osborne decided to delete the older messages because he doesn't think they fit in with his site, which includes photos of his family vacationing at Graceland and tailgating at University of Arkansas football games.

Axes 'Dark Angel' in New Schedule

Fox Renews '24'

Kiefer Sutherland's "24" will live to see another day on the Fox television network, while James Cameron's "Dark Angel" is having its wings clipped, network officials said on Thursday.

Fox made the programming announcements in unveiling a new fall schedule devoid of two of its longtime staples, "The X Files" and "Ally McBeal."

The new Fox schedule will include five new dramas, three new comedies and two new alternative series. In keeping with recent tradition, the network will roll out its schedule over the fall and winter, in part because of its baseball playoff commitment in the fall.

But the big story was the return of "24," a show whose viewership failed to match its critical acclaim, and the cancellation of "Angel," a show created by "Titanic" director James Cameron and launched with much fanfare in 2000.

Other Fox shows that fell victim to the ax included the sitcom "Titus," and the first-year series "That '80s Show," "Undeclared" and "Greg the Bunny." The mid-season "Andy Richter Controls the Universe" will come back in the middle of next season as well, the network said.

Among its more daring moves, Fox put two sitcoms in the Sunday 9 p.m. ET time slot formerly occupied by "X Files." The hour-long block of returning series "Malcolm in the Middle at 9 p.m., followed by the new series "The Grubbs" at 9:30 p.m. will go up against dramas and movies on rival networks on ABC, NBC and CBS.

In another daring move, Fox will put its successful first-year series "The Bernie Mac Show" up against ABC's popular "My Wife and Kids" on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST, pitting two series centered on African-American families against each other.

The network will also premiere three new shows in the winter: the drama "Septuplets" and two alternative series "30 Seconds to Fame" and Meet the Marks."

Though she's the current queen of the "Star Wars" universe, Natalie Portman did not grow up a fan of George Lucas' space epic.

Portman, 20, was not even born when the first two "Star Wars" movies came out, and she had not seen the original trilogy until she was cast in "Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace."

"It really wasn't my thing. It still isn't my thing, the whole science-fiction action thing," Portman told The Associated Press in a telephone interview this month. "I prefer simpler, character-based movies."

Berlin Honors Decade After Burial

Marlene Dietrich

Ten years to the day after she was buried, film siren Marlene Dietrich won the acclaim of Berlin on Thursday when the city bestowed honorary citizenship on the screen goddess once scorned by her hometown as a traitor.

Dietrich was born in Berlin but avoided it for decades because many in the city resented her support for the Allies during World War Two.

Born Marie Magdalene Dietrich on December 27, 1901, the actress who became the quintessential blonde bombshell took her stage name at 20.

She rebuffed attempts by Hitler's Nazis to return to Germany and later dressed in an American uniform for performances for the troops on the front line.

Her wartime performances for Allied soldiers led to lingering resentment in Berlin.

When she returned for a concert in 1960, she was greeted by protests. Some spat at her, called her an "American slut" and waved banners reading "Go Home." Dietrich was deeply hurt and vowed never to go to Germany again.

Dietrich nonetheless picked Berlin as a final resting place after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. She died in Paris in May 1992 aged 90.

After 35 Years

Paul Newman Takes Stage

Paul Newman is returning to the stage for the first time in 35 years.

The Oscar winner will star in "Our Town" next month at the Westport Country Playhouse, which is near his home.

The movie star and Westport resident was not the first choice for the lead role of stage manager in the Thornton Wilder play.

Joanne Woodward — the theater's artistic director, and Newman's wife — said she didn't think of her husband for the lead when she chose the play to open the theater's 72nd season.

When they discussed the play a few months ago, Newman said, "I could play that role."

"And I said, `Of course, you could,' and then I went and took a bath. When I came back into the room, he said, `Listen to this a minute,' and then he recited the whole first speech (from the play)," Woodward said. "I was stunned."

"Our Town," which won Wilder the Pulitzer Prize in 1938, is set in 1903 in Grovers Corners, N.H., and explores the appreciation of everyday pleasures.

Looks to Bolster Young Viewers with 3 New Shows

UPN Unveils Fall Schedule

Television network UPN on Thursday unveiled three new shows for next fall's prime-time schedule aimed at boosting its audience of younger viewers and complementing current hits like "Buffy The Vampire Slayer."

The network, a sister to CBS and a unit of media giant Viacom Inc, plans two new dramas with a supernatural twist. The first is an updated version of the 1950s classic mystery series "The Twilight Zone," and the second, "Haunted," tells of a private detective who uses psychic powers to solve crimes.

UPN also plans one comedy, "Half and Half," about two half-sisters who grow up separately, but as young adults they move into a San Francisco apartment together and learn what its like to be sisters.

"Our goal is to make UPN the first place on the dial that 18 to 34-year-olds go, and this schedule puts us comfortably on our way to doing that," said UPN program chief Dawn Ostroff.

Following "Buffy" (Tuesdays 8:00 to 9:00 p.m.) will be "Haunted," starting at 9:00 p.m. and lasting one hour. It stars "Party of Five" actor Matthew Fox as police detective Frank Taylor, whose near-death experience gives him the power to contact dead people who then help him solve crimes.

"Twilight Zone," will air on Wednesdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. following the most recent "Star Trek" series, "Enterprise." It will be hosted by acclaimed actor and director Forest Whitaker, and like the original 1959 series, will feature new actors each week in tales of the supernatural.

"Half and Half," stars Rachel True and Essence Atkins as the half-sisters who share a father but never really knew each other as kids. Older "Mona" (True) is a free-spirited music executive while Dee Dee (Atkins) is a college honor student. It will air on Mondays at 9:30 p.m. after the sitcom "Girlfriends."

UPN also plans a mid-season replacement, "Abby," about a young woman TV producer who breaks up with her boyfriend but still lives with him because they share a rent-controlled San Francisco apartment that neither could afford on their own.

People Magazine Picks...

Hollywood's Best Body Parts

Editors at People magazine really, really like Nicole Kidman, who on Thursday was cited as having the best legs in Hollywood in the weekly's latest issue celebrating the "best body parts" of the stars.

Other celebrities cited for exquisite, and presumably natural, body parts were actors Tom Cruise and Jennifer Garner, who won honors for having the "best arms," tennis pro Patrick Rafter who shared the "best legs" award with Kidman, and Benjamin Bratt and Halle Berry who were cited as having the "best chest." Sorry, there was no award for best backside.

R&B star Usher, who shared the magazine's "best abs" honors with former Spice Girl Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell, squeezes in up to 1,000 stomach crunches a day to get his rock-hard abs. And when he's not on tour, he makes four two-hour trips to the gym each week.

Mere mortals who remained glued to computers 10 hours a day occasionally wishing they could catch anorexia, can find some solace in knowing that celebrities are paid to look good, and therefore while we are slaving away at desk jobs the stars are poring over meal plans with their personal chefs and sweating hard with the world's best trainers.

For example, Cruise, 39, even has a mobile gym that follows him everywhere he goes, she said, thus helping him keep in top shape for the rock climbing and other stunts required in his high energy adventure films.

Purple? Orange? They're Good For You!

Carrots

A bunch of rainbow coloured carrots, due to go on sale in the UK in July 2002, is displayed, May 16, 2002.

It may seem like fashion gone mad but this summer there may be a new food craze in Britain -- purple carrots.

In fact, the violet vegetables are not unnatural -- it was their original hue before the Dutch decided to cultivate them in their national colour orange in the 1720s, a supermarket supplier said on Thursday.

Dutch scientists say purple carrots afford extra protection against some forms of cancer and heart disease -- a recent study concluded they contain pigments that act as anti-oxidants.

Carrots also come in white and black varieties, and Isleham plans to develop a "rainbow bunch" over the next year.

It's A Start

Dan Rather

Patriotism has been so strong in the United States since the Sept. 11 attacks that it sometimes prevents American journalists from asking tough questions about the war on terrorism, CBS News anchor Dan Rather said on British TV on Thursday night.

"What we are talking about here — whether one wants to recognize it or not, or call it by its proper name or not — is a form of self-censorship," Rather said on the British Broadcasting Corp. Newsnight TV show.

"It starts with a feeling of patriotism within oneself. It carries through with a certain knowledge that the country as a whole — and for all the right reasons — felt and continues to feel this surge of patriotism within themselves," he said.

"And one finds oneself saying, `I know the right question, but you know what? This is not exactly the right time to ask it," said Rather.

Rather said that "patriotism run amok" is making it difficult for journalists to provide Americans with all the information they need about the war in Afghanistan and to hold the Bush administration accountable.

He also accused the Bush administration of failing to give journalists full access to the fighting and the information it has about the war.

"There has never been an American war, small or large, in which access has been so limited as this one," Rather said, adding that he was sorry to say that the American people have accepted these limitations.

Judge Says He Helped Create 'Sopranos'

Looking For A Cut

A judge and former prosecutor claims he helped create the Emmy-winning HBO series "The Sopranos," but got iced out of the profits.

Robert Baer wants a court to order series creator David Chase to pay up. Now.

Baer, the municipal court judge in Prospect Park and a former assistant prosecutor in Union and Hudson counties, claims he suggested a TV show about organized crime in New Jersey and met repeatedly with Chase to give him a crash course on the North Jersey mob.

Baer says he even critiqued an early draft of the show's pilot episode for Chase. He claims he and Chase made an oral agreement that if the show took off, Baer would be "appropriately compensated."

Baer met Chase in 1995 through a mutual friend, Joseph Urbanczyk, who's known Baer since kindergarten. Urbanczyk, a camera operator in Hollywood, described the conflict between the men as "a very ugly situation" and said Chase turned his back on Baer when he found success.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court. It asserts that during a three-hour lunch at a Santa Monica, Calif., restaurant, Baer regaled Chase with tales of organized crime exploits in northern New Jersey, and suggested that they set the series in Elizabeth.

"That's the reason why on the opening credits, you see the turnpike sign for the Elizabeth exit," Breite said. Many of the show's exterior shots were filmed in Elizabeth's predominantly Italian Peterstown section.

In Memory

Ray Stricklyn

Ray Stricklyn, a theater and film actor who became a Hollywood publicist representing Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor, died Tuesday after a battle with chronic emphysema. He was 73.

Born in Houston, Stricklyn pursued acting throughout school. He moved to New York in 1950 and made his Broadway debut two years later in "The Climate of Eden." His performance earned him a Daniel Blum Theater World Award as the season's best young actor.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1955 and made his film debut in George Seaton's "The Proud and the Profane."

Among other early roles, he played Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine's son in "The Catered Affair" and Gary Cooper and Geraldine Fitzgerald's son in "Ten North Frederick," which earned him a Golden Globe nomination as most promising new actor of the year.

His acting career began to dry up in the 1960s and by 1973, he went to work for the West Coast office of John Springer Associates. There, he handled affairs for such clients as Taylor and Lynn Redgrave.

During the 1980s, Stricklyn returned to the stage, earning critical praise for his one-man show as playwright Tennessee Williams in "Confessions of a Nightingale." Stricklyn earned best actor awards for his role from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and Daily Variety.

When not touring as Williams, Stricklyn did guest shots on television shows such as "Cheers," "The Nanny," and "Seinfeld."

He released his autobiography in 1999, entitled "Angels & Demons: One Actor's Hollywood Journey."

Not a 'Star Wars' Enthusiast

Natalie Portman
