big hammer - bigger hammer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Live, From New York...
It's Saturday Night Live!"
It opens on a group shot, with Rudy Guiliani front & center...lots of firemen & police on either side, and at least 6 deep...
Camera starts to dolly in as Rudy starts talking... Nice, tight CU as Rudy get to the summation, where he expresses that (paraphrasing here) " we don't let terrorists make our decisions for us "...
He nods, camera left, where a curtain rises, and there is Paul Simon.
(For the uninitiated in SNL lore, he was the first musical guest 27 years ago, on the first show.)
Paul then performed --
'The Boxer'...
I am just a poor boy,
Though my story's seldom told,
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles,
Such are promises
All lies and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest.
When I left my home
And my family,
I was no more than a boy
in the company of strangers
in the quiet of a railway station,
Running scared.
Laying low,
Seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go,
Looking for the places
Only they would know.
Lie-la-lie . . .
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job,
But I get no offers.
Just a come-on from the whores
On Seventh Avenue
I do declare,
There were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there.
Lie-la-lie . . .
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone,
Going home
Where the New York City winters
Aren't bleeding me,
Leading me,
Going home.
In the clearing stands a boxer,
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the remainders
Of ev'ry glove that laid him down
And cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame,
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains
Lie-la-lie . . .
Lyrics
Then, Lorne Michaels came out, bantered with Rudy, where it wrapped with Lorne asking Rudy if it was OK to be funny.....
And, Rudy's topper was 'Why start now?'
(Of course!)
Former Vice President Al Gore brought a message of unity to a Democratic forum Saturday, declaring that "there are no divisions in this country" and fighting terrorism is a mission for all.
"George W. Bush is my commander in chief," Gore said. "This country is more united than at any time I can remember in my lifetime."
Gore was the keynote speaker Saturday at the Iowa Democratic Party's biggest annual fund-raiser, but aides made it clear there would be nothing approaching partisanship in a state where the presidential nominating season begins.
"As Americans all of us stand behind our president and send a message to the world that we will win this war against terrorism," Gore said.
"There is some political risk," said Rod Halvorson, a Democratic activist from Fort Dodge. "He's an honorable man who is honoring a commitment."
Canary In A Coal Mine
Mavis Leno
Jay Leno's wife Mavis, a longtime critic of fundamentalist rule in Afghanistan, has urged Americans to rally around the plight of Afghan women, calling them the "first victims" of Taliban terror.
Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 1996, women have been reduced to second-class citizens. They cannot hold jobs or even leave their homes unaccompanied.
Leno said the horrific overnight change in Afghan culture prompted her to take on their cause. As her symbol of support for oppressed Afghan women, she wore a lapel pin made from the mesh of a "burqa," the head-to-ankle outfit that women must wear in Afghanistan.
For years, Leno has been a lone celebrity voice for Afghan women. She said she wasn't surprised when U.S. officials pinned the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on terrorist Osama bin Laden and his Taliban hosts.
Leno said her famous comic husband supports her efforts, and they donated $100,000 to the Feminist Majority Foundation (www.feminist.org) to bring the Taliban's brutal treatment of women to light.
Governor Jesse
'Y & R'
Jesse
In the briefest of appearances, Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura paid a return visit to the daytime soap opera ``The Young and the Restless.''
In an episode that aired Thursday - taped during the governor's August vacation in Southern California - Ventura knocks on the door of the show's villain and declares: ``I'm taking over the day shift now.''
Apparently his role was to provide security at the villain's house. The governor, wearing a dark T-shirt and cap, was on camera for about 10 seconds.
Ventura was not paid for the cameo, his spokesman John Wodele said.
It was the governor's second walk-on on the popular CBS soap.
Last year, Ventura played himself in several scenes with Eric Braeden, who plays the show's slick villain, Victor Newman.
He was paid $700 for that stint.
Braeden and Ventura have since become friends. Braeden was at Ventura's 50th birthday party in St. Paul this summer, and the two men had dinner during Ventura's recent trip to California.
Another Fund Raiser
At The Molson Centre
Cirque du Soleil
The Quebec band La Bottine Souriante kicked off the sold-out benefit Friday night at the Molson Centre for the victims of the attacks of the World Trade Center. Montreal firefighters on hand wore T-shirts bearing Quebec and American flags and the words In Memory WTC.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Quebec Premier Bernard Landry and Quebec Liberal Leader Jean Charest. "It's important to help out. I went to New York last spring and after seeing the devastation (from the attacks), I thought I had to help in any way I can," said Marie-Claude Tessier, from St-Victoire.
International superstar Celine Dion was expected to end her self-imposed retirement again to take part in the concert.
British singer Peter Gabriel and Quebec artists Bruno Pelletier, Les Respectables, Offenbach, Cirque du Soleil, Luck Merville and Pierre Flynn were also among those taking part in the Montreal show.
Money raised from the concert will go to the American Red Cross to benefit the families of the victims of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on Sept. 11.
But organizers still have to secure all the rights to the performances, telethon spokeswoman Barbara Brogliatti has said.
Another $1 Million Donation
The Schwarzenegger's
Arnold Schwarzenegger and wife Maria Shriver have donated $1 million to the Twin Towers Fund to aid victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Schwarzenegger also accepted an invitation from New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to join the fund's board of directors.
Money raised by the fund is earmarked for families of emergency crews killed when the World Trade Center towers collapsed following the crashes of two hijacked planes. Schwarzenegger will oversee distribution of the money.
The action star's latest, ``Collateral Damage,'' was pulled by Warner Bros. from its Oct. 5 release date out of concern the movie, about a firefighter seeking revenge against terrorists who killed his family, would be too disturbing.
Another Movie Delayed
'Windtalkers'
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. decided Friday to delay releasing its big-budget World War II film, ``Windtalkers,'' until next summer to avoid the box office uncertainty that has beset Hollywood since the Sept. 11 attacks on America.
``There's so much uncertainty right now and we don't want to spend a lot of money on promoting the film,'' the film's producer, Terence Chang, told Reuters.
The movie, set for release on Nov. 9, was expected to be a major entry for the Thanksgiving holiday season. It has now been pushed to June 14, 2002, MGM said in a news release.
``Windtalkers,'' based on a true story, was directed by action specialist John Woo and stars Nicholas Cage. It tells a tale of Native Americans who helped to thwart Japanese code breakers during World War II by transmitting war plans in the Navajo language.
Several movies have already been delayed by other studios -- Arnold Schwarzenegger's ``Collateral Damage'' and Tim Allen comedy ``Big Trouble'' to name two -- due to content that seemed insensitive to the national mood. But Chang said the delay of ''Windtalkers'' had nothing to do with the subject matter.
Windtalkers
A couple of years back I bought my first 'GI Joe' doll -- actually, bought 2.
He says 7 different phrases in Navajo & English.
The Code Talkers were never officially recognized for their efforts until 1969, yet, their achievement is a feat still unrivaled - to this day it is the only unbroken code ever used in the history of war.
Farm Aid
The Changing Face
The face of Farm Aid has changed since its advent in 1985, moving to smaller venues in the last few years with lineups that no longer read like a who's who among musicians.
Yet the show goes on, this year in Noblesville, still promoting the value of the family farm in America.
A lineup of performers for Saturday's benefit contrasts the enormous lineups that Farm Aid maintained until the early '90s. The number of performers and celebrities dropped from 70 in 1991, when it also played Indianapolis, to 52 a year later. By 1993, the lineup had fallen to only 20.
Founding musicians Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp will perform alongside Dave Matthews, Martina McBride, Arlo Guthrie, Acoustic Syndicate, the Doobie Brothers, Susan Tedeschi, Jimmy Ryser, Chris Knight, Alice Peacock and Kory and the Fire Flys.
The previous Indianapolis Farm Aid was at the Hoosier Dome in 1991, and included Guns 'N Roses, Elton John and Garth Brooks.
Farm Aid has awarded nearly $16 million for farm-related causes and education in 40 states and Washington, D.C., since it began in 1985. More than half, about $8.9 million, was handed out the first four years.
Today's Gross Story
Not A Message In A Bottle
Police say a man found a penis Thursday in a bottled drink he purchased at a grocery store.
Thursday morning, Juan Sanchez-Marchez, 41, a machine operator at Foothills Mail and Supply, was at work, taking his usual sips from a 20-ounce bottle of Ora Potency Fruit Punch.
After he had downed about two-thirds of the bottle, he found something in the opaque red drink.
He called over his 16-year-old son, Manuel, who also works at the shop. His boss told him that it looked like a penis and to report it to the police.
A pathologist with the Adams County coroner's office determined it was a 3-inch segment of human penis. It was cleanly cut at the base.
Authorities do not know whether the body part came from an adult or juvenile, or whether it had been taken from a cadaver or a living person.
A DNA test will be conducted on the penis, in case it may be related to an ongoing Adams County investigation where various body parts, including a head and part of a leg, have been found but not identified.
The Ora Potency Fruit Punch comes in a clear glass bottle with a label.
Sanchez-Marchez said the top was intact when he opened it.
"It's a very hard top to get off," he said.
Police do not believe that Sanchez-Marchez put the penis in the bottle.
"He's a very credible witness," Rowe said.
The drink was purchased Wednesday from the King Soopers at 6040 E. 65th Ave.
Sanchez-Marchez bought six bottles. Nothing was found in the others.
The product has been taken off the shelves at the store and from other King Soopers in the metro area.
Rowe said the drink was dated at least a year ago and was bottled at a plant in Pittsburgh.
"They said there was no way it could have occurred there," she said.
"It's a mystery where it came from and how it got into this bottle."
